Bio:

The San Francisco Bay Area based Power/Thrash Metal band HEXX was formed in 1983, and released its debut album, "No Escape", on Mike Varney's Shrapnel Records label in 1984. Since then the group has been through several lineup changes and musical style variations. The first lineup for the "No Escape" album was: Dennis Manzo (vocals), Dan Watson (guitars), Bill Peterson (bass) and Dave Schmidt (drums). The group’s second effort, "Under The Spell", was released in 1986 once again on the Shrapnel label, and with European distribution support from Roadrunner Records. For this album Dennis Manzo was replaced by Dan Bryant on vocals, and Clint Bower was added on rhythm guitar. The musical style for this album was still very much Power Metal, but with a hint of the Speed and Thrash influence that would define the band's subsequent musical style and direction.By 1988 HEXX recorded the "Help Your Self" demo demonstrating a shift away from traditional Power Metal to the Speed/Thrash style that was taking over the Bay Area musical landscape at the time. Clint Bower took over on vocals, and Dave Schmidt was replaced by drummer John Shafer. England's Music For Nations label signed the band and released the "Quest For Sanity" EP in Europe. This album was released in the United States the following year by Wild Rags Records. In 1990 HEXX released a single on the Wild Rags label called "Watery Graves" which included two Speed/Thrash bonus track versions of "Under The Spell" and "Edge Of Death" from their 1986 "Under The Spell" album. In 1992 HEXX signed with Century Media Records and released their most technical and speed driven album to date, "Morbid Reality". A year or so after this release the group disbanded and lay dormant until spring of 2013, when founding members Dan Watson and Bill Peterson reformed with original "No Escape" vocalist Dennis Manzo, and new drummer Gary Gutfeld, to perform at the Keep It True Festival in Germany in 2014. The reformed HEXX recorded the "Up From The Grave" demo that is in the similar Power Metal style of their first two albums. Due to Bill Peterson's mounting health issues he was replaced by bassist Mike Horn just prior to the bands performance at the Keep it True festival.Mike Horn remains as the bands bass player to this day. After returning home from performing at the Keep It True Festival in Germany, history seemed to repeat itself, and Dennis Manzo was once again replaced by Dan Bryant on vocals, and Gary Gutfield was replaced by original member John Shafer on drums. This line up recorded two new songs, "Burn Or Boil" and "Swimming The Witch", and in July of 2015 performed at the Headbangers Open Air festival in Germany. A new deal was signed with Metal Blade Records to re-release both "Under The Spell" and "No Escape". "Quest For Sanity" and "Watery Graves" are being re-released on Vic Records, and "Morbid Reality" is being reissued by Dark Symphonies Records. Dan Bryant has recently been replaced by new vocalist Eddy Vega, and Bob Wright from BROCAS HELM has signed on to share guitar duties with Dan Watson.

Album:

Hexx has been known to explore the metal scene, switching styles, with their music. They started out as a NWOBHM band, but then later converted to thrash metal. By the last album, which is Morbid Reality, there are thrash influenced riffs with growled vocals. I don't know if you would call it death metal, since death metal isn't my area of expertise. But the vocals are growled, sometimes very brutally done. Towards the end of the album though the vocals tend to lighten up and go in and out of growls. This is just you're straight out heavy thrash metal. The riffs are fast at points and other times it switches into a slow, but powerful rhythm. Best example of this is on the song Birds of Prey, a little after the three minute mark. Guitars on this album land a lot of cool riffs that are pretty technical at times, and at other times straight forward power chords are used. What helps this album reach its supreme of trashiness is the drums. The drums do a great job of keeping everyone on time while switching tempos very rapidly. One song on this album could switch tempos after every other measure. So a good drummer is needed to do this. But what is rather prominent is the straight forward blast beats. The themes of the song are mostly of death and dying. Though I think it is okay to say these guys could use war and weapons of mass destruction as their over all theme. This is one of those albums that you listen to and then put away. If you keep listening to it over and over it will blend together as one. Not a bad album though. Songs to check out are: Morbid Reality, Birds of Prey, Fire Mushrooms, and Watery Graves. I think all metal heads should check it out, especially if you like Sodom's first couple albums. That is probably the best comparison. Oh and don't let the piano intro to Morbid Reality throw you off...this is a pretty fast album.

Album:

One of my most favorite underground metal bands is Hexx from California. “No Escape” and especially “Under the Spell” are terrific longplayers, featuring an exciting mix of power metal with some thrash references too. To my disappointment the band moved their sound towards death metal with their third album “Morbid Reality”. This shift was the beginning of the end of a band that showed so much potential. last but not least Hexx disbanded and radio-silence took over.It was in 2013 when a first new Hexx demo came out of leftfield, feeding hope for a new longplayer of the Bay-Area powerhouse. Four years later we can hold the new album in our hands. “Wrath of the Reaper” is title of the forth Hexx record, featuring eleven new songs. Guitarist and founding member Dan Watson re-vitalized the underground legend by adding new band members to the ‘Hexx-family’ and it feels like the five guys building a strong unit in metal. John Shafer and Mike Horn stand for the new rhythm section, providing a powerful punch for each of the tracks and also second guitarist Bobbie Wright fits perfect into this line-up. But the biggest asset of the renewed band is singer Eddy Vega. This guy brings back the power metal to Hexx. His range covers everything from edgy vocals to high-pitch screams and listening to him singing is pure pleasure. All this would be sample without value if the songwriting don’t bring some quality too. But no worries – “Wrath of the Reaper” is the legitimate successor of “Under the Spell”. Songs like the uptempo opener “Screaming Sacrifice” and the slower “Slave in Hell” are thrilling power metal songs and also the multi-variant “Dark Void of Evil” is a delight for each headbanger. And even the good old speed metal influences are present on “Wrath of the Reaper”. The grand finale, “Exhumed for the Reaping”, is a fast paced anthem with furious leads and well-placed breaks.“Wrath of the Reaper” is the anticipated big return of Hexx, a band that gained a lot of fans in the underground and hopefully will add new and younger supporters with this brilliant new record. Power metal is gaining momentum again and Hexx is underlining why this is the case. Hopefully the guys will be on tour rather soon and how cool would a package Hexx/Metal Church be.

Album:

Hexx’s reference album is the 1986 release ‘Under the Spell’ and the new longplayer from the California-based powerhouse will not cause a change. ‘Entangled in Sin’, so the title of the record, is the new release forged by Hexx and although it can’t reach the milestone it’s still an excellent Metal record.Hexx disappeared from the scene in the ’90s after having had a successful era in the previous decade. The band returned in 2013 and it took four years to work on the anticipated next longplayer from the Bay Area band. Driven by Dan Watson and John Schafer the line-up gained stability with bass player Don Wood being the newest member to the team.As the previous album, also ‘Entangled in Sin’ focusses on Power Metal and showcases a band the lifted the bar compared to ‘Wrath the Reaper’. Hexx invested a bit more time into the new album, also focussing on details, which leads to a powerful and strong Metal record.‘Watching Me Burn’ leads-off the album with a powerful riff attack. The song is an excellent start into ‘Entangled in Sin’ with the title track being the next riff assault. The tune is another example for Hexx knowing how to write a cool Metal track. A blistering solo part and hoarse vocal by Eddy Vega enrich ‘Entangled in Sin’, riddled with some references to the ‘Under the Spell’ era too. ‘Power Mad’ reflects the trademarks even stronger, vaulting fans back to the late ’80s. Hexx step by step finds back to their old strength, which is good news. The quintet delivers with ‘Entangled in Sin’ an album that can easily handle comparisons with ‘Wrath of the Reaper’ and this longplayer is a next step towards the great ‘Under the Spell’-days. Fans of fierce Power Metal and US Metal enthusiasts should listen to the album. It’s worth it.
