Bio:

Manowar is an American power metal band from Auburn, New York. Formed in 1980, the group is known for its lyrics based on fantasy (particularly sword and sorcery), mythological topics (particularly Norse mythology) and for playing a lot of songs about heavy metal music, along with their "loud and bombastic" sound. In an interview for MTV in February 2007, bassist Joey DeMaio lamented that "these days, there's a real lack of big, epic metal that is drenched with crushing guitars and choirs and orchestras... so it's nice to be one of the few bands that's actually doing that."In 1984 the band was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance, a record which they have since broken on 2 occasions. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert after playing for 5 hours and 1 minute in Bulgaria in 2008.They also have been known for their slogan "Death to false metal".Although the band has never been a mainstream commercial success in the United States, they maintain a strong cult following there. In contrast, they are extremely popular in the heavy metal scene in Europe, Japan, Australia and South America. Dedicated fans are known and referred to by the band as "Metal Warriors", "Manowarriors", "Immortals" or "Brothers of Metal", and collectively their fans are known as the "Army of Immortals"[citation needed]. Their albums have sold over 9 million copies worldwide.

Album:

Album:

Fighting the World is the fifth album by the American heavy metal band Manowar, released in 1987 (see 1987 in music). This was the first Manowar album to feature artwork by long-time collaborator Ken Kelly, and also one of the first heavy metal albums to be recorded and mixed entirely on digital equipment (Turbo album, by Judas Priest, was prior to that). Since Fighting The World, all Manowar album covers have been painted by Ken Kelly. The song "Defender" features a speech by famous American actor Orson Welles. The album was released 2 years after Welles died. The recording of Welles' speech was re-used from the original 1982 demo of the song."Fighting the World" was covered by German power metal band Mystic Prophecy as a bonus track on their album Regressus."Black Wind, Fire and Steel" has been covered by Brazilian heavy metal band Immortal Choir, by Swedish punk band Venerea and by Spanish rock/punk band Reserva Dos, this last under the name "Viento negro, fuego y acero" (in Spanish). The cover is parodied in the Metalocalypse episode "Dethfashion". In the episode, Dethklok is visited by a sadistic fashion designer who is upset that their measurements for their fashion line were not reflective of their actual physiques. The designer used a cover of the band's previous album as a reference for his designs, and like the cover of Fighting the World, the band is standing shirtless on a pile of stones. The cover had been airbrushed to make the band members look much thinner and more physically fit than they actually were.

Album:

MANOWAR will release highlights of its "The Lord Of Steel World Tour" on a live EP, featuring performances from the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia and Sweden."From the first show in Zaragoza/Spain to the last show in Yekaterinburg/Russia, 'The Lord Of Steel' world tour was a terrific experience," said MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio. "Performing new songs for the first time in front of your audience is the ultimate test of the power of the songs to connect to the only people that matter. Our fans were totally brutalized and went wild as you will hear on this new EP. 'The Lord Of Steel Live' is a thank you to our amazing fans; it will forever immortalize this tour and those who attended it."The album will be mixed and mastered at MANOWAR's own studios Hell and Haus Wahnfried by Joey DeMaio personally with longtime MANOWAR engineer Dirk Kloiber.Asked why MANOWAR chose to release "The Lord Of Steel" in digital format several months before the retail release, DeMaio told Rockpages.gr: "MANOWAR have always worked with the latest technology. Thankfully, our fans have more options than ever to choose how they get their music and when."We are proud to be able to give our fans multiple choices: We have released a limited edition of the album in collaboration with Metal Hammer U.K., with its own artwork and special mixes as a first look at what is to come. For those who prefer digital content and wish this limited version, they have the option of getting it as download album."The worldwide retail release [is] available with different versions of the songs and a totally different mix and master as CD and limited vinyl, both with spectacular new art by Ken Kelly. And, of course, this version [is] available as digital album as well. The fans can decide which options and configurations they prefer."Regarding the difference between MANOWAR's previous studio album, "Gods Of War", and "The Lord Of Steel", DeMaio said: "All of our albums are different from one another, unlike other groups who constantly try to keep to a formula."After the massive production of 'Gods Of War', our vision this time was a stripped down, brutally raw, unique sound; 'lean and mean,’ so to speak."We had started working on material prior Donnie [Hamzik, drums] return to the band."MANOWAR are a unit. Every band member brings in a unique contribution, so it was only logical for us to start over and include Donnie from the beginning of the creative process."Some people will say its a shame to abandon something you have invested a lot of time and energy in, but that's the way we work. It has to feel right for all of us."

Album:

American power metal/heavy metal icons, Manowar have released their eagerly anticipated EP, The Final Battle I, the first of three EPs that together form their latest album. The Final Battle I is out now, as of the 29th of March, via Magic Circle Entertainment. While any new Manowar music is eagerly greeted by their army of loyal fans, They aren’t a band we absolutely love here at GBHBL. Don’t get me wrong, they are good but despite our love of all things power metal, they never quite caught our imagination. We never really bought into the hype. Still, the one thing we always say here is that nothing is more pleasing than being proved wrong and finding a gem in a band’s catalogue when you never really cared too much for the band. Does The Final Battle I represent such a gem? Well, yes actually. It really is very good. I wouldn’t quite say I love it as much as the band’s multi instrumentalist Joey DeMaio though. I doubt anyone likes it quite as much as he does.“The sheer power of these four songs is mind-blowing! We simply couldn’t release more songs at one time; it’s just too much! We want to give our fans the chance to take in every note, every word. Gain more strength from this experience and then be ready for the battles they fight every day. And join us on the road, on The Final Battle!” The Final Battle I is 4 songs or 19 mins long starting with March of the Heroes into Valhalla. A 2 and a half minute long instrumental that could have come straight out of the cinema. Huge orchestral sounds and choir singing transport you into the fantasy that imagines the end of the battle and the fallen heroes marching forth into Valhalla. It is a powerful and exciting start. Blood and Steel follows and is just over 4 and a half minutes in length. A thrashy riff starts us off leading into what will surely be a fan favourite. Its pretty mid tempo for most of it but with decent guitars and an extremely catchy chorus sure to have crowds singing in unison. There is a solid solo but it is the excellent chorus that makes this track.Sword of the Highlands is 6 minutes long and is brilliant, again capturing the idea of a fantasy film on audio. It really makes me think of the Highlander. Not just because of the obvious Highlands and sword connections. Musically it makes me picture Connor Macleod forging a new sword in the mountains of Scotland. It is a true epic song with wind instruments setting a morose, but beautiful tone. Eric Adam’s whispered vocals tell a sad tale of fallen warriors that builds in passion and intensity into a glorious chorus. It is a well made, well written and masterfully executed song with astonishing vocals and emotive melody. The Final Battle I ends with another 6 minute long song called You Shall Die Before I Die. Starting with sorrowful choir vocals before we move into rare vocals by Joey DeMaio. They are near spoken word, but that suits the mood of the dark and doomy verse. Squealing guitars add a sprinkling of melody somewhat before it all culminates in a grandiose sound with the choirs, orchestra and sombre vocals. It is a decent song but probably the weakest of the 4 so ends the EP on a minor sour note, though you have to keep in mind it is more a third of the way through the album then the end of the EP.The Final Battle I is a very good EP. To Manowar’s loyal fanbase, I am sure they will be absolutely thrilled with it. To those who don’t care so much for the band, well it is worth checking out. It really is very strong. Powerful, emotive metal with a strong story and emphatic choruses. Good, solid power metal by all accounts. The weaker track, You Shall Die Before I Die is still decent enough in itself but is the only real bum note. Three corkers and one good song is a damn fine release.

Album:

Into Glory Ride is Manowar's second studio album and the first to feature drummer Scott Columbus. In 2005, Into Glory Ride was ranked number 444 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time. The album's title is a reference to the title track from the band's previous album Battle Hymns.I believe this to be the greatest release of heavy metal history. Everything about it is perfect. Here we see Manowar, empowered by the reception of their first release, going down the route of creating the first great epic metal albums in the style of the last two full songs of Battle Hymns (their debut). Having dropped Donnie Hamzik, he is replaced by Scott Columbus (RIP) on this release. The album starts with a hard and happy speed metal number called 'Warlord'. This is basically a song about riding Harleys and screwing teenage girls and begins in a rather amusing way. It's fast, heavy, and entertaining - a simple song, but executed perfectly. The rest of the album, however, has a very different feel. All the other tracks are absolutely epic. Secret of Steel is a incredible song: it's haunting, the guitar and Joey's custom bass do some unusual work which still hasn't been matched, and it almost sounds progressive without the pretentiousness. 'Hatred' is a dark, aggressive, and yet slow song; it has some very eerie passages which create an atmosphere not usually found in traditional heavy metal to this extent (with some obvious exceptions). The guitar on this album is brilliant as Ross the Boss doesn't bother with the fretboard masturbation that was on the ascendency in 1983. Instead, he is a more traditional guitarist who feels every single note he plays. Ross' playing draws the listening into the music and I would much rather have music you can get lost in than the replacements who weren't capable of such magic. The drumming is brilliant as Scott was a very creative drummer and didn't just rely on recycled, generic beats. 'Gates of Valhalla' particularly showcases his ability to enhance the other instruments with his drumming. Joey, the mind behind most of Manowar's material, gives a sublime performance on the bass guitar and with no bass solo wankery ruining the continuity of the album. Secret of Steel stands out for him.But the true highlight of the album is Eric Adams' vocals. This is probably the greatest vocal performance in the history of rock music. His voice is power with a tremendous range; he can go from being a speed metal powerhouse to an operatic maestro with incredible ease. He employs beautiful falsetto and death-defying screams, singing a high G and A with his full voice. There are few words which do his performance justice. Just listen and remember that it is unlikely that a singer will ever reach these heights again. All in all, this is groundbreaking and ultimately is very influential. Highlights include 'Secret of Steel' and 'March for Revenge', but really, every track kicks ass!

Album:

Released in February 1984, a little over six months after its predecessor, "Hail To England" arrived amid sky-high expectations, not least because by this point MANOWAR were notorious around the world as self-proclaimed guardians of an entire genre. Luckily, the album itself was more than equipped to blow people’s heads off all over again.35 years later, "Hail To England" has been revived and revitalised by producer Joey DeMaio himself. It might be hard to believe that an album as righteous and monumental as this could ever be improved, but if one thing has defined MANOWAR’s unrelenting march to glory, it has been a tireless devotion to delivering the goods on a level that makes everyone else’s efforts look pathetic.Crank up the enhanced "Hail To England" to life-threatening volume and witness the sound of an immaculate heavy metal monolith erupting with newfound power and punch. This is heavy fucking metal in its purest form and no one does it better. Hail MANOWAR!The album title is a tribute to the country that the American band members met and formed the band in, and in particular the predominantly British NWOBHM that had emerged in the early 1980s. The album was also reported to have been recorded in its entirety in only six days. The album peaked at No. 83 on the UK album charts. The album actually features the flag of the United Kingdom on the front cover, and not the flag of England. In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked Hail to England as 87th on their list of 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.'

Album:

The extensive »Black wind, fire and steel - The atlantic years 1987 - 1992« CD Box.Manowar’s origins go back to Black Sabbath’s Heaven And Hell tour of the UK in 1980, when Black Sabbath bass tech and pyrotechnic operative Joey DeMaio met former Dictators guitarist Ross The Boss, then playing guitar with French support band Shakin’ Street. At the end of the tour, the pair joined forces with singer Eric Adams and Manowar were born. Scott Columbus would join on drums for 1983’s “Into Glory Ride”.Releasing the self-explanatory and genre defining “Battle Hymns” in 1982, they would release three more influential and ground breaking albums of heavy metal before signing to Atlantic Records in 1987 for “Fighting The World”. Notable for being the first Manowar LP to sport a cover painting by celebrated fantasy artist Ken Kelly, famed for his iconic artwork for KISS and Rainbow, Kelly would collaborate with Manowar for many years to come. Among the 9 tracks penned by Joey DeMaio was a revisit to the epic ‘Defender’ featuring Orson Welles (the only occasion that the legendary actor collaborated with a heavy metal band). Also included was lead single ‘Blow Your Speakers’, whose video gave the band a wider audience through the growing popularity of MTV.Wasting no time, a second LP was released by Atlantic in 1988. “Kings Of Metal” proved to be a commercial high point, featuring the singles ‘Wheels Of Fire’ and ‘Kings Of Metal’. The “Kings Of Metal” tour would continue for three years, taking Manowar around the globe. It was four years before another Manowar record – “The Triumph Of Steel” – was released, by which time founder member Ross The Boss had been replaced by David Shankle on guitar and Rhino had replaced Scott Columbus on drums, the only record to feature this line-up. The album kicks off with one of Manowar’s most ambitious pieces, the near 30 minute ‘Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts ’. Sporting another impressive Ken Kelly painting, “The Triumph Of Steel” was released in 1992, and features the single ‘Metal Warriors’. Included as a bonus track is the non-album song, ‘Herz Aus Stahl’.

Album:

MANOWAR have released a new digital EP, Highlights From The Revenge Of Odysseus, on their own Magic Circle Entertainment label. It is based on Homer's The Odyssey, the story of the great hero Odysseus and his long and dangerous return to his wife and son.
MANOWAR have spared no effort in realising this project. Bassist Joey DeMaio personally travelled to Athens to record a spoken piece featuring Costas and Konstantinos Kazakos. Kostas is widely known in Greece for his involvement in many films and theatrical productions, as well as being an author of books, and his son Konstantinos is also a talented actor. For MANOWAR, father and son Kazakos recorded the touching dialogue between Odysseus and his son Telemachus. And to preserve the spirit of the original work, they read the text in ancient Greek, which was translated from English by Sakis Tolis from the band ROTTING CHRIST.
