Info:

The band was originally formed under the name Pierced Arrow in 1979, before changing name to Beowulf in 1982 and finally Crimson Glory in 1983. Ben Jackson and Dana Burnell were the only recognised Crimson Glory members to feature in the original line-up, which also included Tony Lee Wise on vocals, Bernardo Hernandez on guitars and Glen Barnhardt on bass. Jeff Lords took Barnhardt's place briefly before departing to be replaced with John Colemorgan and then later rejoining again. A guitarist briefly preceded Jon Drenning as replacement for Hernandez, and Wise was replaced by Mark Ormes before the band found Midnight in 1983.Shortly after becoming Crimson Glory, the members wore full-face silver masks onstage and in promo photos. Following the release of the debut album these were toned down to smaller half-face masks and then were abandoned after the touring for "Transcendence." Ben Jackson and Dana Burnell both quit Crimson Glory at this point, heralding a shift in the band's direction to a more commercial hard rock sound.Midnight quit the band following the release of "Strange and Beautiful" and after the rest of the band completed their tour dates with David Van Landing on vocals they split up. A brief reunion with Wade Black on vocals came and went in the late 90s to early 2000s before they split up again. Jon Drenning and Jeff Lords went on to form Crush with David Van Landing and then Erotic Liquid Culture, both of which also featured Ravi Jakhotia. The 'classic' line-up agreed a reunion near the end of 2005 - former touring drummer Jesse Rojas was also re-hired to provide additional percussion and vocals onstage. Midnight, however, was replaced by Wade Black for the second time at the beginning of 2007 following substance abuse problems that led to him being arrested for drunk driving (with a suspended license, no less). A new album called ''Metatron, Lucifer and the Divine Chaos'' had been planned but this was shelved after the collapse of Black Lotus Records.Midnight died at the age of 47 in July 2009. The band played a tribute show at the ProgPower USA X festival with eighteen vocalists, including Black, Van Landing and Todd La Torre, who was later hired to be the band's full time vocalist. La Torre quit in 2013 due to frustrations with the band's lack of activity.A rough demo track featuring La Torre called "Garden of Shadows" was made available for online streaming in 2012, but was not officially released.

Album:

CRIMSON GLORY - the self titled debut album and this follow-up "Transcendence" - by Metal Mind Productions, both remastered for the first time using 24-Bit process on golden disc, including bonus tracks and presented in a deluxe digipak limited to numerated 2000 copies.Crimson Glory's self-titled debut success was not surprising – the unique collaboration of heavy, yet melodic guitars, brilliant drumming and amazing vocals brought a true masterpiece onto the metal soil. But the band did not rest after touring intensively and immediately begun working on a follow-up. And so in 1988 Crimson Glory’s finest achievement was born… "Transcendence" took almost two years to create, but the result was simply astounding. Crimson Glory managed to come up with an album that featured all the terrific elements found in the debut and took them to the next level. The band managed to put out two over-the-top albums in a row, and not one dull song on either of them. Tell me another band from the who's done just that. Crimson Glory just had that "it"."Transcendence" delivers unbelievably catchy tunes, backed up by killer riffs and well-crafted songwriting. It's really not fair to point out specific songs from this album, but 'Painted Skies' and 'In Dark Places' are my favorites. The album also contains another highlight; the band's first hit-single 'Lonely', a song that was in the top of the American Rock Radio charts in several major market areas for over 24 consecutive weeks. The production of "Transcendence" is also a remarkable point. The drums on the record are a combination of both live and sampled drums. The band sampled drummer Dana Burnell performing live into a synclavier without any cymbals, and then re-recorded the cymbals live later in order to have complete separation of drums / cymbals.Guitarist Jon Drenning stated "It was a very arduous and time consuming way to do it but at the time it seemed like something we wanted to try to achieve; a pristine, clean sound and true separation of all instruments".Fabulous songs, a great singer (with a very unique signature voice) and memorable arrangements make "Transcendence" another must have album. Crimson Glory's unique musical mixture, followed by their characteristic image / silver masks (which definitely worked well with their Sci-Fi oriented lyrics) marked the beginning of a metal legend. This Metal Mind reissue delivers a superb digitally remastered job, balance and crystal clear. Added to this digipak is also a remixed version of the single track 'Lonely' as bonus track.

Album:

The self titled debut album and the follow-up 'Transcendence' - by Metal Mind Productions, both remastered for the first time using 24-Bit process on golden disc, including bonus tracks and presented in a deluxe digipak limited to numerated 2000 copies.Crimson Glory emerged on the '80s metal scene as quite a phenomenon, delivering a groundbreaking mixture of glam and traditional metal with a progressive twist to it. Their debut album “Crimson Glory” from 1986 has brought them a huge acclaim from specialized press and fans of the genre, to whom they would refer to as The Crimson Militia. The music in “Crimson Glory” is, as is the case with most metal bands, based around the guitar work of Jon Drenning, and the unique, outstanding vocals of Midnight (real name: John Patrick Jr. McDonald). Midnight's vocals go from high-pitched and wailing to twisted and "insane" in the blink of an eye. Always powerful, never missing a note, often compared with the young Geoff Tate (Queensryche). But all the musicians in Crimson Glory are amazingly talented. The band had their own sound from get go, and with great production on their debut album, they had a strong and very professional send-off. Imagine, if you will, music that is both melancholic, emotional, and powerful, heavy at the same time. There is even hints of futuristic touches, and some mystical aura. This 'mystery' was reinforced by the band's image; in an era of sound-and-lookalike metal bands, Crimson Glory's goal was to be immediately identifiable from the others, so they wore full-face metallic silver masks. They used them on-stage, as well as for all photo shoots and public appearances. Vocalist Midnight was the exception to this, as his mask left his mouth uncovered to be able to deliver his acrobatic vocal performances.“Crimson Glory” is absolutely one of the best metal / melodic / progressive albums ever released and an '80s milestone from the genre. The songwriting is varied, always captivating, surprising, and all of the arrangements very well thought through. The album’s success was not surprising – the unique collaboration of heavy, yet melodic tight dual-lead guitars, brilliant drumming and amazing vocals brought a true masterpiece onto the metal soil. This Metal Mind reissue delivers a superb digitally remastered job, giving all the instruments a clear and present space in the sound picture. Added to this digipak is also the bonus track 'Dream Dancer', previously only available as a single B-side.Essential in your collection.

Album:

Fully 24-Bit remastered, “In Dark Places… 1986-2000“ is a great 5-CD box set containing all of CRIMSON GLORY studio albums: “Crimson Glory”, “Transcendence”, “Strange And Beautiful” and “Astronomica” (plus a Bonus Disc). The box also includes bonus tracks, such as songs taken from singles / B-side, videos, live or demo tracks, plus an awesomely detailed 60-page booklet. This Metal Mind Productions limited to 1,000 numbered copies collector’s release is out of print – and deleted, because the band sued the label alleging ‘not authorized‘ – is a must-have for all fans of the band, one of the most innovative acts from the ’80s.The five discs come in digipack’s, one for each disc. The self-titled debut has “Dream Dancer” attached as bonus track, while “Transcendence” has a great remix of “Lonely”.All the albums were digitally remastered – according to the booklet using a 24-Bit tube (?) technology – whichever it is all sound fantastic. Loudness is not an issue and I found the bass to have a more pronounced effect to enhance the listening experience. The standouts are the extra live bonus tracks featured in the last disc. While the original EP had two live bonus tracks, three more are tacked on and is very entertaining. Hearing Midnight belt out “Lost Reflection” live sent shivers down my spine and his introduction to songs were filled with vigor.I smirked to the intro to “Queen of the Masquerade” when Midnight spews “This is for all the bizarre, strange women out there.” The thumping bass solo beckoning the crowd to shout “Hail” in the middle of the song added some great interaction for the audience.A 60 page booklet is included in the set featuring a biography of the band chronicling their beginnings up until Todd La Torre’s arrival in the group in 2010. All album credits are also issued as well as lyrics for all the songs and some band pictures to look that. There are also snippets of magazine articles all over in a ‘Rock Candy Records’ fashion. It is a shame that Crimson Glory didn’t break through the barrier and become a huge success like Queensryche would, but they certainly left their mark on the scene.“In Dark Places… 1986-2000” is a wonderful box-set and it’s great to have their full discography plus collector’s bonuses in a convenient package. It’s really expensive right now (used copies for U$D 258 at the link below) but worth every cent.
