Bio:

One of the pioneers of the new wave of American Heavy Metal.Jack Starr came on to the rock metal scene in 1982 when he was selected by Mike Varney of Guitar Player magazine to appear on his compilation record entitled U.S.Metal Volume 2. This was the start of many great things for this quiet unassuming guitar hero. In this quote, Jack says "I was blown away to think that out of thousands of other guitar players from all over the United States, my playing was picked for this album, and especially by a writer for a magazine like Guitar Player that I had read ever since I started playing. The song Jack sent in was Children of the Storm. this song, with it's minor key moodiness and relentless beat would set the tone and be the template for the style of music that would become Virgin Steele. As the U.S. Metal album began to sell more and more it was apparent that the band that Jack Starr and 18 year old drummer Joey Ayvazian founded and named Virgin Steele was ready to record it's first album. After finding a great bass player in the person of Joe O'Reilly and a singer named Dave Defeis there would be no stopping the men of steele. Thus begins the saga of Virgin Steele and the creation of Virgin Steele One. The album begins with its classical Bach sounding intro and quickly attacks the listener with it's ear piercing screams and wall of sound guitar. It does not let up untill the very end leaving one feel as if they have been trampled by a wild herd of elephants. Coupled with it's eerie cover art and strange liner notes and even including the guitar players home phone number its uniqueness would not go unoticed. Within one month, a record company in England had contacted the band and offered a record deal. The record company was Music for Nations and their first release was Virgin Steele One. The label fueled by the success of Virgin Steele later went on to sign Metallica, Ratt, Manowar and many others. It came to pass that this once local band founded in the suburbs of Long Island would impact on the future of Heavy Metal.Things started to move fast for the band in 1983; Kerrang Magazine bestowed Guitar Hero status on Jack Starr. The encyclopedia of Heavy Metal by Geoff Barton said, "Virgin Steele One should mark the start of great things for the band". A flurry of press high profile concerts, big budget photo shoots, videos, and words like "the next big thing" followed the band wherever they went. After the success of the first album. The boys knew that the next album would have to be even heavier and Jack came up with the concept "Guardians of the Flame". Jack felt Virgin Steele had become a band that kept true metal alive and a band that would not follow trends. The album's title track, with it's brutal chunky chords and determined aggressiveness announced to the world there was now an alternative. You could listen to a flock of seagulls and their ilk, or you could join the Guardians for an adventure into the world of light and dark, good and evil. But always trusting in thy sword. The album was released, and it was another great success.Despite the success of all these releases, there was a growing tension beetween Jack Starr and David De Feis and it wasn't clear at the time which direction the band should have follow. Jack was going for a harder stuff while David wanted a different approach. These artistic differences between Jack and Dave created a stressful environment for Jack. He decided that he needed to take a hiatus, which would give things time to get back on track. Jack accepted one of the many offers which were being hurled at him. He went to the upstate town of Rochester, New York and recorded a solo album, "Out Of The Darkness" with Rhett Forrester of Riot on vocals and the rhythmic section of The Rods, Gary Bardonero on bass and Carl Canedy on drums. The album received enthusiastic reviews, and so Jack decided to go on with his solo career, creating great albums and finding great singers like Rhett and later Mike Tirelli. He did this throughout the eighties making a slew of brilliant recordings and winning the praise of the Metal community. He called his band "Burning Starr". Named after his nickname Burning Starr for his ability to burn on his guitar. The last album he did in the eighties was the all-instrumental album, A Minor Disturbance. This album featured Randy Coven on bass. Stylistically the band covered Latin Funk Blues and Metal. The album with it's over the top guitar playing put Starr back on the map. The bass player is now playing with Ynqwie Malmsteen, but the album that he is most known for during the eighties is No Turning Back. This album charted on commercial radio in the U.S. and prompted a tour of the U.S. which saw "Burning Starr" playing in places like Chicago, Cleveland & Dallas. Even doing a live radio broadcast, which featured Starr playing a live 10-minute guitar solo on Z Rock that was broadcasted in 16 cities. The band broke out and blazed a trail of heavy metal intensity across the states, but unfortunately the bands bass player William Fairchild nicknamed Freebass, ended up overdosing on drugs. He became a victim of a lifestyle that can turn on a person as much as it can reward one with the trapping of success. The band broke up in 1989. a possible victim of nineties backlash a metal magazine said, "Burning Starr" was a hair band in looks only, they certainly could outplay bands like "Poison" and "Motley Crue" but lacked the edge of "Metallica". They were in the middle of "Poison" and "Metallica" but there was no audiences in the middle. "Burning Starr" saw its fan base erode finally calling it quits in 1989.Later two members, Jim Harris and Mike Tirelli formed a band called "Holy Mother". Jack, disgusted with the music scene, dropped out for several years but not before forming a band with the bass player of "Foghat", Graig McGregor. This band was called "Smoke Stack Lightning". Burning starr's former manager, Frank Cariola, managed them. But unfortunately, their brand of bluesy hard rock was unable to secure an audience in the "Nirvana" age of the early nineties. The year 2003 finds Jack with a new band the Guardians of the Flame featuring muscians that Jack has long wanted in his band ,the drummer and bass player ,Joe Hasselvander and Ned Meloni were in fact in his band Burning Starr in the early eighties and the singer Shmoulik Avigal was someone that Jack had always expressed a desire to play with. That day has come and GOF has arrived with 'Under A Savage Sky' an album that is enjoying wonderful reviews and is fast becoming the biggest seller in Jack's lengthy career which has spanned over 20 years! To quote Jack"I am in this for the long haul and to make great music, trends and fads will come and go but good music will survive" Thanks for Listening.

Album:

Rock the American Way is the first album by heavy metal band Jack Starr's Burning Starr. Released in 1985 by Passport Records.Debut album "Rock The American Way" by JACK STARR'S BURNING STARR, which a year ago published "Out Of Darkness" was renamed yet only Jack Starr. The ex-VIRGIN STEELE-guitarist gathered for this album singer Frank Vestry (RIOT), bassist Bruno Ravel (DANGER DANGER) and drummer Tony Galtieri, the first song of Ex-ANTHRAX drummer Greg D'Angelo was recorded."Rock The American Way" is an official, gutklassiker, quite commercial chunks Hair / Heavy Metal of the glorious Eighties, stylistically somewhere in the intersection of RIOT, VIRGIN STEELE, QUIET RIOT and RODS. The music of JACK STARR'S BURNING STARR is, of course, strong guitar-oriented, good Jack Starr shines here, of course, with its fine arts us his sense of catchy riffs and strong solos, plus the catchy melody and vocal leadership. Between hard bangers, speedy crackers and ballads is the tension of the varied "Rock The American Way". I especially like the dirty "In The Heat Of The Night" and the fleet Rocker "Live Fast, Love Hard," which on the album anyway, no failures have occurred and the remastered compositions are consistent though not outstanding."Rock The American Way" is a good re-release with attractive packaging.

Line Up:

Album:

"Stand Your Ground", the long-awaited new studio album from US power metal act Jack Starr's Burning Starr, will be released on August 25 via High Roller Records. The effort, which is almost 80 minutes long, was produced by Bart Gabriel (with whom the band already worked on the previous album "Land Of The Dead"), recorded and mixed by Kevin Burnes (Dokken, Raven), and mastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple Of Disharmony Studio. The release will be available as CD, 2-LP, and digital download. Like in case of previous two Burning Starr albums, its cover artwork was painted by Ken, a legendary artist known from his iconic works for bands such as Rainbow, KISS and Manowar.JSBS was formed in 1985 by and founding member of Virgin Steele, Jack Starr. After releasing four albums in the 80s - "Rock The American Way" (1985), "No Turning Back!" Two years later, the band released their next studio album, titled "Land Of The Dead", which was met with great reviews by critics and fans alike.

Album:

Burning Starr, the band Jack Starr founded in 1984 is now on its tenth album and “Yes” they have gotten better and better! “Yes” they have thunderous drums provided by Rhino ex-drummer of Manowar, and “Yes” they have killer vocals that some would describe as “pillar crumbling” provided by new boy Alexx Panza, and “Yes” again they have massive and agile bass playing by Ned Meloni, a former bandmate of Joe Lynn Turner, UFO’s Paul Chapman and Kix frontman Steve Whiteman... and last but not least some face-melting guitar playing by the one and only Jack Starr.Formed in New York in 1984, the original incarnation of Jack Starr’s Burning Starr only lasted for five years, and if any band was born in the wrong era, it was surely this combo. Too hard (and talented) for the prevailing glam scene, yet too melodic for the thrashers, they were ill at ease in a decade that often valued style over substance. However, since their reformation in 2004, time has finally caught up with them and they’ve hit a rich vein of form. Latest album, Souls Of The Innocent, carries on the good work of previous studio outing and with new vocalist Alexx Panza at the hem, it seems the sky’s the limit.Jack Starr’s Burning Starr have been in constant evolution (as all good bands should) and, while there’s been no radical change in sound, they’ve matured into a rather tasty power metal outfit. To symbolise this, introduction ‘The Ascension’, is suitably grandiose and sets things up nicely for opener ‘Demons Behind Me’. With a sublime riff that’ll snare you immediately, Burning Starr reel the listener in and, a fish with hook in mouth, you’ve no option but to resist to its pull. I’m definitely picking up a classic Helloween/Grave Digger vibe and ‘Demons Behind Me’ encapsulates all that’s good about ballsy metal, from the operatic vocals to the thunderous drums via the electrified guitars and chuggy bass, this track, as is the whole album, a celebration of metal, and you’re all invited to worship at the altar of Burning Starr.Having played with some notable musicians in a long and illustrious career, you have to admire Jack Starr’s musical magnetism. He’s pulled some of the biggest names into his orbit, and while this could have resulted in a rampant ego, he’s level-headed enough to take his place within Burning Starr. This has allowed ex-Walpurgis Night and current Hitten singer Alexx Panza to make his mark, and he’s certainly put his stamp on the Heaven & Hell flavoured ‘I Am The Sinner’. A voice of several octaves, Alexx can get low down and bluesy (‘River Of Blood’) or flighty and angelic, as on the soaring title track. Former Pentagram bassist Ned Meloni and ex-Manowar drummer Kenny “Rhino” Earl make for a formidable rhythm section and they turn ‘Winds Of War’ into a swirling maelstrom. Of course, there’s plenty of fireworks from Mr Starr, but he seems content on making this album a collaborative effort.Souls Of The Innocent is built for the long haul and, with no signs of flagging, the aptly titled ‘All Out War’ puts its foot firmly on the accelerator, and holds it there for four-and-a-half windswept minutes. Likewise, the penultimate ‘Where Eagles Fly’ has a frisky gallop (one that’d make Steve Harris proud) and it beats a steady path from speaker to speaker. The atmospheric ‘When Evil Calls’ ensures the album ends on a rather ominous tone; a snaking solo from Jack Starr is tethered by Meloni’s bassline while Rhino’s drums fall like sheeting rain. Over this, Alexx floats majestically, a falcon caught on the wind, his soaring vocals making for an evocative listen, and one that will haunt you long after the disc’s stopped spinning. With plenty of miles under their belt, you could forgive Jack Starr’s Burning Starr for settling into the comfort of the “heritage” circuit. Yet, Souls Of The Innocent has a vitality which marks them as totally relevant and renders them leaders, not followers.

Album:

Founded by guitarist Jack Starr in the mid-80s, BURNING STARR has been delivering consistent rock music ranging from hard rock, melodic metal and even some AOR in their origins, always staying true to the genre’s spirit & sound. Now 2022 the New York combo release their first ever career spanning anthology, “Eternal Starr: The Burning Starr Anthology“, consisting of three CD’s spanning the band’s long career since 1984, encompassing the key studio albums, with additional rarities and live tracks from Jack’s personal archive. It’s really cool to hear songs from Jack Starr’s BURNING STARR early albums fully remastered, very melodic tracks including into the line-up the likes of bassist Bruno Ravel (future Danger Danger, The Defiants), awesome vocalists Frank Vestry (Marcello / Vestry, Last Temptation), Mike Tirelli (Holy Mother), Todd Michael Hall, and more. This release come hot on the heels of the brand new Burning Starr album “Souls Of The Innocent” which is already generating fantastic reviews worldwide.Jack Starr throughout his career has consistently performed and recorded with world-class musicians, cultivated a devoted fan base with his signature style and inspired musicians who have kept his legacy relevant in recent years. In the mid-to-late ’80s his band Burning Starr became a cult sensation with releases like ‘Rock The American Way” (which Hit Parader magazine called “an album that rocks with both strength and precision”), “Blaze Of Glory” and “No Turning Back” . The band also became a springboard for musicians who would go on to play with Danger Danger, White Lion, Yngwie Malmsteen, Quiet Riot and Widowmaker, among others.Burning Starr’s debut full-length, ‘Rock The American Way’ perfectly encapsulated the American metal spirit of ‘85. A quartet of tracks from that record open this first disc, and ‘Fight The Thunder’ makes for a raucous introduction. Burning Starr deliver a sound that’s hard, yet accessible, and despite the screaming guitars and pounding drums, it remains catchy as hell.Originally released on an indie label (Passport) Rock The American Way was given a warm, luxurious production and along with the band’s melodic sensibility, placed them somewhere between Dokken, Icon and Scorpions.Featuring Frank Vestry on lead vocals, songs such as ‘Heat Of The Night’ even have an AORish touch,This was a solid start that found Jack Starr burning brightly. When ‘No Turning Back’ hit the streets the following year, Burning Starr had undergone a radical change in personnel with only Jack remaining from the previous release. While some bands play it safe on their sophomore record, Burning Starr took a different route, and this is a much heavier affair. The four tracks presented here have a definite European melodic metal feel, and feature plenty of frenetic fretwork fireworks from Jack Starr, and it’s easy to hear why the album got a glowing review from the metal bible, Kerrang!.More line-up changes accompanied ‘Blaze Of Glory’, but Jack was wise to hang onto vocalist Mike Tirelli and the LP became one of 1987’s key releases. It pushes all the needles firmly into the red and continues in much the same vein as its predecessor, but finds the musical pendulum swinging back towards a more Americanized sound.Titles such as ‘Overdrive’ and ‘Stand Up And Fight’ give a good indication of the sound contained within, and if anyone asked you what was so great about ‘80s US metal, I suggest you spin ‘Blaze Of Glory’.Jack Starr’s Burning Starr were a constantly evolving beast, yet they always stayed true to their core metallic sound, and their eponymously titled fourth album found them moving in a slightly more commercial direction. The tolling cowbell, crystalline guitar solos and operatic vocals all scream “1989” (which, of course, is a good thing) and those with a penchant for the likes of Warrant, Black N’ Blue or Cinderella will find a spiritual home in tracks such as ‘Fool For Love’.Two years later Mike and Jack reconvened under the name Strider (presented here as The Strider Project) and got low down and dirty with some of the best blues/groove metal known to man. It flew defiantly in the face of grunge and alternative metal, which makes its charms all the sweeter. The four tracks here find Mike in fine voice, while Jack’s guitar has never sounded crisper and cleaner, and these songs will certainly whet your appetite and have you searching for the full album.Fast forward a decade and Jack formed Guardians Of The Flame, a traditional metal outfit who took their name from the second Virgin Steele album, Jack’s first band. In many ways it found Jack returning to his roots yet upgrading his sound for the new millennium.Aside from Jack Starr, the band featured ex-members of The Rods and Pentagram and, as you’d expect from such pedigree, the sound they produced veered towards the heavier side of metal.2011 found Jack Starr releasing the excellent ‘Land Of The Dead’ album, and by the time this opus rolled round, Todd Michael Hall had replaced Schmoulik Avigal on vocals (although this change occurred in 2003) and this constant injection of fresh blood seems to have constantly revitalized the band. The title track is evidence of this, and as soon as that opening riff kicks in, it’s time to grab your air guitar, ‘cos you know you are in for some good music. While it is true you can’t judge a book by a cover, the sleeve which housed Land Of The Dead, featuring a muscular dude with axe held aloft is pretty indicative of the sound contained with.Three live tracks are culled from 2018’s ‘Keep The Metal Burning…Live In Germany’ album, and they show why Burning Starr are such an intriguing live proposition with ‘The Flame That Never Dies’ licking at the listener’s ears, and ‘The Reaper’ further drawing comparisons of Judas Priest.“Bang your head and raise your fist/toast the spirit of ‘86” is sung by way of introduction to ‘Spirit of ‘86’ (the first of four unreleased bonus tracks), and never in the annals of heavy metal have truer words been uttered. This is metal, pure and unadulterated, and is played for no other reason that is sounds absolutely marvelous.A raw version of ‘Der Klang Der Liebe’ brings this collection full circle, and it’ll have you pressing ‘play’ at its conclusion.37 tracks spanning over three decades, this anthology not only charts the rise and fall (and rise) of heavy metal, but one of the genre’s most inspirational and talented guitarists. A fitting tribute to the man and his music.
