Bio:

Savatage (/ˈsævətaːʒ/) is an American heavy metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1978 at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, Florida.Savatage has released eleven studio albums, two live albums, four compilations and three EPs. The band experienced major American commercial success with the release of their third studio album, Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number No. 158 on the Billboard 200.Their next four albums — Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993) — were also successful[1] but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. After Criss' death in 1993, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on hiatus in 2002.During the years, members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they will reunite for Wacken Open Air 2015.

Album:

Hall of the Mountain King is the fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band Savatage, released in 1987 under the direction of producer Paul O'Neill. It is their first album produced by O'Neill, who was assigned to the band after the tour in support of Fight for the Rock. This album shows the beginning of Savatage's exploration of progressive metal, in their search for new forms of musical expression. Many fans consider this album the original turning point in their musical identity, distinguishing between the old and new Savatage. It is not a concept album, but it has a constant tone (of darkness, in this case) and is more complex than their previous albums, with two entirely instrumental tracks that go beyond simple guitar riffs and solos, namely "Prelude to Madness" and "Last Dawn". Through Paul O'Neill's connections, he brought in Ray Gillen of Badlands fame (credited as Ray Gillian) to perform a vocal duet at the end of "Strange Wings"."Prelude to Madness" is an arrangement of Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt suite. Oddly, Grieg is not credited for this song, but for the following title track - which ironically, is an original song. The intro of "Prelude to Madness" features keyboards and guitar playing "Mars, the Bringer of War" from Gustav Holst's suite, The Planets. This was the first album to feature the album cover drawn by artist Gary Smith, who was responsible for lead guitarist Criss Oliva's airbrushed guitars at the time. Hall of the Mountain King reached position No. 116 in the US Billboard 200 albums chart. This is easily the best of what Savatage has to offer. Producer Paul O'Neill makes his debut with the band, and this is the first time that Gary Smith's artwork graces the cover of a Sava album. What makes Savatage good? I'd say Jon's screechy vocals that have just enough melody in them to keep them from being ridiculous, and Criss' majestic yet extremely dark riffing. Paul O'Neill brought out the dramatic element of Jon's classical training just enough to give this album a larger than life feel. On later albums, the operatic stuff would really mess up anything sense of metal credibility, but here it works to create one massive, epic slab of dark power metal. This is one hell of a dark album. On any given Savatage album, there is a lot of gloom, but Hall of the Mountain King is the most murky of all. Not in an evil way, but more in a cold, desolate way. They type of feeling you'd get on the bottom of the ocean, watching a sunset in Antarctica, or on some distant mountain top, shrouded in clouds. This is helped the massive amount of chorus on Criss' guitars. Even the catchy, radio ready songs like "Strange Wings" and "The Price You Pay" have a healthy dose of melancholy to them. But those radio friendly hits are only the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the material here is all winning, and much darker. "Beyond the Doors of Dark" is probably the most sinister sounding of all, with that eerie intro, and off kilter shuffling main riff. I'm not too big a fan of "Prelude to Madness," but in context it works, leading up to the title track. And that's an epic tune! The midsection, with it's melodic breakdown is quite possibly the highlight of Savatage's career...there are not many riffs as haunting and pensive as that one! "White Witch" turns up the speed, showing that Savatage was indeed a thrash metal band at one point. Amazingly, this is their weakest moment on here, but it's far from actually weak.Hall of the Mountain King reminds me a lot of another nearly perfect album of power metal, aptly called Power Metal by Pantera. The production and quality of song writing on both this and Power Metal are very, very close, with this being more grandiose, and Power Metal being more straightforward. And of course, this does have kick ass solos oozing out everywhere. Criss never played a bad solo. Technically perfect and chock with feeling...goddamn, was he good! It's not a stretch to say that this is Savatage's best album. Nothing else sounds like this--it is unmistakably Savatage. This is epic without the lameness of gnomes and trolls, and operatic without the frilly shirts.

Album:

Power of the Night is the second full-length album by the American heavy metal band Savatage and was released in 1985. This record was produced by the hot producer of the time, Max Norman, who became better known as the producer of Megadeth's 1992 hit album Countdown to Extinction. The record was not originally pressed with a Parental Advisory sticker on the cover. However, Atlantic Records did have a problem with some of the sexual metaphors mentioned in "Hard for Love" and "Skull Session." It was also a marketing ploy to encourage more people to buy the record as a result of it being "banned" by some outlets. This was bassist Keith Collins's last album with the band. Jon and Criss Oliva were not completely happy with Collins' playing and corrected some of his mistakes for the final version. Collins was replaced by Johnny Lee Middleton in 1986.The heavy metal machine that is Savatage continued their yearly album output in 1985 with Power Of The Night, a very memorable album and in my opinion their strongest to this point. Just about every track is full of energy, yet the songs are also diverse enough so that you don't feel like you're listening to the same old recipe. This album also saw Savatage attempting to gain a broader audience with more mainstream type songs that dealt with the subjects of love and lust, as many of their hair metal counterparts were doing at the time. The songs that overtly go in this direction are ones I could have done without, but they are still decent songs in their own right. This is certainly one of Savatage's catchiest and hard-hitting albums, and it's also an album that flows together very nicely, permitting one to easily listen to it in one sitting. The title track is up first once again with very catchy guitars and has an especially memorable chorus. The guitar work of Criss Oliva is a little more subdued in this album than the past couple, yet it is still quite prevalent in this song. Unusual also shows Oliva doing some complex lead guitar work, albeit for only a short time. This is another very memorable song with a great chorus that just makes you want to sing along. Warriors has a bit of a heavier edge, yet still includes a chorus that is simple and memorable. Necrophilia has been a personal favorite of mine for years. I love the quick, thrashy guitar work along with the raspy vocals of Oliva. Hard For Love is something that would be more in place in a glam/hair metal band rather than Savatage, for me it just doesn't really work. This is one of those songs, along with Stuck On You, that seems like it might have just been written to attract a wider audience. However, Fountain Of Youth comes in next and is another one of my favorites. This is a slower, more melancholy take on the Savatage sound and it really is great with simple, memorable riffs and drums and a memorable chorus once again. Oliva's vocal work also sounds great on this track; he really puts his range to more use than on many songs on this album. The guitar solo is also really catchy and memorable. Finally I want to talk about the song Skull Session. Where do I even start? The song starts off with a quick guitar lead by Oliva, followed closely by some fast drum work that really gets the energy flowing. Jon Oliva once again utilizes his full range of vocal abilities in this song, going up to some higher pitches. The solo work by Criss Oliva is nothing short of face-melting. Furthermore, this song gives you a huge sound in under three and a half minutes. That's how you know these guys have song writing talents bestowed by some badass musical deity.

Album:

Fight for the Rock is the third full-length album released by the American heavy metal band Savatage, released in 1986. It is their first album with new bass player Johnny Lee Middleton, who has since become the only ever-present member on each Savatage record released.Released in 1986, it is largely regarded as the band's worst ever release by both fans and band members alike, with the band referring to it as "Fight for the Nightmare".Jon Oliva went as far to say in October 1994, "I've never really been fond of that album. WE'VE never been fond of that album".The band said that they were driven to make the record by their label, Atlantic Records, particularly Jon Oliva began writing pop-rock songs for other artists on the label such as John Waite. However, the label eventually turned around and told the band to record the music that Jon had written for other artists themselves. This destroyed the band's credibility in the eyes of the press and reviews were not kind to the band. It not only destroyed the band's image, but the negative critical reaction has been cited as a cause of Jon Oliva's bout of drug and alcohol depression which eventually drove him from the fore of the band.Atlantic Records also wanted the band to have photos taken, since none of their previous releases had included any. The band hired a friend to do the photography work, with one of the photos featuring the band re-recreating the famous photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. The band agreed this was a good idea at the time, but look back with the same feelings on the photos taken as they do the album. When initially released, the album featured a Parental Advisory label on the front cover, despite having no "nasty words", as Jon Oliva puts it, featured anywhere on the record. This was largely done to please the label, as they felt that putting the sticker on the record would drive up record sales. Although it did chart, the band have been extremely reluctant to perform any of the songs live, and haven't done so since the early 90s. Even on the tour in support of the album, the band only performed "Hyde", "The Edge of Midnight" and few others.

Album:

To celebrate SAVATAGE upcoming reunion performance at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany, SAVATAGE and earMUSIC will release the ultimate "Return To Wacken" album on June 19. The effort will contain studio versions of classic songs that the band played live at Wacken as part of their previous two appearances at the world-famous festival: in 1998 and 2002. In addition to SAVATAGE's greatest hits, such as "Hall Of The Mountain King", "Gutter Ballet" and "The Wake Of Magellan", the "Return To Wacken" booklet will offer insight into the band with personal memories by the group's mastermind, Jon Oliva, rare pictures and press quotes.Asked in an interview with Femme Metal Webzine if SAVATAGE has any plans for beyond Wacken for either live shows or new material, Jon Oliva said: "As far as that goes, the whole Wacken thing came up, and I was, like, you know what? If we're going to do anything, we have to do it now. I don't want to do it when I'm 60 years old. I mentioned that to [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA producer/composer] Paul [O'Neill]. He said to me, 'We're going to do the Wacken thing, but let's just wait until the [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] winter tour is over and then you and me we're going to sit down in January and discuss what we're going to do.'"He continued: "We've already gotten offers to do it in certain areas of the world, America being one, Greece, South America, places like that. We have to see how we're going to do this. It's something that Paul and I, honestly — and I'm telling you totally honestly — we just brushed over what we thought we might want to do and we said, with all the chaos of getting the winter tour out, we said, let's just wait until after the tour is over and then we'll figure this whole thing out. We know we're going to start with 'Gutter Ballet'; that's all we agreed on. [Laughs]"Oliva added: "[TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] is going to come out first for, I think, 40 or 50 minutes doing the big-production numbers, then Paul is going to bring me out and we're going to do the SAVATAGE thing and we're going to start with 'Gutter Ballet' and that's where we ended the conversation and said, we'll pick this up and we'll figure out what we're going to do as far as other shows go and everything like that. As of right now, Wacken is the only place, but I'm sure once everything works out and we see what happens, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of there being a couple more on top of that."SAVATAGE's last album release, "Poets And Madmen", in 2001 was highlighted by Jon Oliva's return as lead vocalist, replacing Zak Stevens, who left the band citing family reasons, and the departure of Al Pitrelli, who accepted an offer to join MEGADETH in 2000. Pitrelli did record solos for some songs prior to his departure. Another very limited U.S. tour followed, supported by FATES WARNING in the early shows, and then NEVERMORE for the remainder. Around this time, Jon chose Zak's replacement in the form of Damond Jiniya (DIET OF WORMS). Damond performed Zak's parts on tour, with Jon having an increased vocal role in proceedings.

Album:

US American metal icons SAVATAGE are one of the most influential bands in their genre. Founded 1981 by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in Florida, the band met producer Paul O’Neill in the mid-1980s while touring with Motörhead – and the rest is history. They have earned their legendary status amongst the Metal community for effortlessly blending relentless classic metal, hard rock sounds with a progressive and experimental approach, resulting in some of the genre’s best concept albums. Now earMUSIC is paying tribute to SAVATAGE with a carefully curated vinyl LP reissues series of all studio albums, especially mastered for vinyl. There’s the regular 10-track release of Savatage’s 1989 studio album “Gutter Ballet“, and this Limited Edition including the bonus disc “Thorazine Shuffle”.“Gutter Ballet” resulted a turning point for the band, exploring a more progressive sound.Savatage was preparing to take the next major step in the evolution of their sound under the tutelage of producer Paul O’Neil in 1989. With his guidance and lyrical ideas, the classic metal unit from Tampa released their most ambitious and possibly most successful LP to date in ”Gutter Ballet”.Featuring a more prominent piano sound courtesy of band leader Jon Oliva, ‘Gutter’ marked the beginning of the band’s progressive period that influenced so many acts.Progression was achieved on almost all levels, not only the keyboards addition but in the growth of Criss Oliva’s classical guitar playing. The band also had a fairly successful tour to support the ”Gutter Ballet”throughout much of 1990. A live track from that year is included in the bonus disc.Featured as a support or middle level act in metal festivals in Europe, Savatage then returned to headline venues in the US.The title track instantly became recognized as one of the key songs in the band’s entire catalog. Other favorites included “Hounds” which revisited the dark atmosphere of earlier hits, and “When the Crowds Are Gone” which became Savatage’s most renowned ballad. The record seemed to balance the piano balladry with the metal madness of Savatage’s most recognizable sound and often in the same song!”Gutter Ballet” is the pinnacle of Savatage’s artistic and commercial success, an elaborated record that grows and hits you on perhaps a more emotional level than any previous Savatage record.
