Bio:

Ghost (known as Ghost B.C. in the United States) is a Swedish heavy metal band that was formed in Linköping in 2008.In 2010, they released a 3-track demo followed by a 7" vinyl titled "Elizabeth," and later their debut full-length album Opus Eponymous. The Grammis-nominated album was widely praised and increased their popularity significantly.Their second album and major label debut Infestissumam was released in 2013, debuted at number one in Sweden, and won the Grammis Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album.Ghost are easily recognizable because of their eccentric on-stage presence. Five of the group's six members wear hooded robes and the vocalist appears wearing skull make-up and dressed as a "demonic anti-Pope".The band's members keep their identities secret and their names have not been publicly disclosed; the vocalist calls himself Papa Emeritus and the musicians are referred to only as Nameless Ghouls.A Nameless Ghoul said that Ghost formed in 2006, when the members were in another band together and he played a riff that would become "Stand By Him" to them. He said, "I said that this is probably the most heavy metal riff that has ever existed.", "When the chorus came to me, it haunted my dreams. Every time I picked up the guitar, I ended up playing that progression, and when I fit the words in, it seemed to cry out for a Satanically-oriented lyric."Sample of "Elizabeth" from Opus Eponymous (2010).Problems playing this file? See media help. After choosing the name Ghost, the band decided to use their love of horror films and "the traditions of Scandinavian metal" in the band's imagery.A Nameless Ghoul said, "Everything started with a bunch of songs. We knew very early that to make this material work we needed to fulfill our dream of putting a horror show together with music."In 2010, the band produced a three-track demo and the vinyl-only single "Elizabeth", before releasing their first studio album, Opus Eponymous, on October 18, 2010.The album was well-received and was nominated for the 2011 Grammis Award for "Best Hard Rock" album.Ghost supported gothic metal band Paradise Lost on their "Draconian Times MMXI" tour in April 2011.On May 29, Ghost made their United States debut at the Maryland Deathfest.the band played at the annual Download Festival in the United Kingdom on the Pepsi Max Stage on June 11. Following their performance, Phil Anselmo, lead singer of the band Down, performed wearing a Ghost t-shirt and invited three of Ghost's members to join him on the main stage. When Down closed their set, both guitars and drums were played by members of Ghost.Ghost took part in the "Defenders of the Faith III" tour with Trivium, In Flames and Rise to Remain for its UK and Europe shows. The band then embarked on their first United States tour, "13 Dates of Doom" beginning in New York on January 18, 2012, and ending on February 2 in Los Angeles.Ghost joined Mastodon and Opeth as the opening act on the Heritage Hunter Tour throughout North America during April and May 2012.In early 2012, a Nameless Ghoul said that the band had completed writing their second album.

Album:

Infestissumam (Latin for hostile, used by the band as "the most hostile" or "the biggest threat" in reference to the Antichrist) is the second full-length album by Swedish heavy metal band Ghost. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, produced by Nick Raskulinecz and released on April 10, 2013. It was released in North America by Loma Vista Recordings on April 16 in partnership with Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, marking the band's major label debut. The album was generally well-received, with several music publications placing it on their list of the best heavy metal albums of the year, and won the 2014 Grammis Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. In late 2013, the band released a special edition of the album, called "Infestissumam Redux".All of the album's tracks except "Ghuleh" were written and demoed by the end of summer 2011.The band planned to record the album after their North American tour with Enslaved and Alcest; however Ghost had to pull out of the tour and both the band and Rise Above Records agreed the album should be released on a different label.A Nameless Ghoul said that the band was in a hurry to put out another record. On signing to a major label for the album, a Ghoul said, "It was Tom Whalley who was interested in the band. [He] was looking to start his own label, which ended up being an imprint of Universal ... We felt that we might be self-conscious about making that move, but knowing his background, having someone like that, having him be an advocate for our band, within a big organization like Universal, felt like the closest thing you can get to being on an independent without being on an independent."Ghost finally began recording the album in October 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee, with producer Nick Raskulinecz. The band said they chose Raskulinecz because "He’s good at working with a band without transforming the band into something else, rather than make them just flower as the band they are ... It turned out he didn’t want to change much at all, and that’s why he got the job."They did however have difficulties in the Nashville area; because of their Satanic lyrics the band could not find a choir to perform on their record. Even individual choristers turned down the work. The band said, "Then we told them what they were supposed to sing, and one of the guys almost cried, he took offense; it was really weird ... So we ended up recording the choir in Hollywood, where people have no problem with worshipping the Devil.Infestissumam debuted at number one on Sweden's Sverigetopplistan chart, selling nearly five times as many copies as the number two position. The album was certified gold by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry in October 2014, for sales of 20,000.In the United States, it sold an estimated 14,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200. chart.Blabbermouth.net reported that the album had sold 41,000 copies in the US by November 2013.

Album:

Meliora (Latin for the pursuit of something better)is the upcoming third full-length album by Swedish heavy metal band Ghost. The album is scheduled to be released August 21, 2015.On this album the lead vocalist retires his Papa Emeritus II stage name and now goes by Papa Emeritus III.Ghost began crafting their third studio album, the follow up to 2013's Infestissumam, at the end of 2014.On May 29, Meliora's artwork and tracklist were revealed to the public. The song "Cirice" was released as a free download from the band's official site on May 31. A music video for the song was premiered on June 8. Directed by Roboshobo, it is an elementary school version of the 1976 horror film Carrie. The song "Absolution" was released on Spotify on July 31. It was released in Scandinavia only.Thomas Woroniak of Antihero Magazine said "Ghost come out on top offering a compelling addition to the overarching message of self-determined freedom with a well-crafted album that rocks harder than ever." He also added that the album "delivers more of a modern edge with sharper teeth when compared to its predecessor, while maintaining continuity with the overall evolution of the band’s characteristic sound.Earlier this month Swedish rockers GHOST announced the newly ordained frontman Papa Emeritus III who, along with his Nameless Ghouls, will release the third full-length studio album Meliora on August 21, 2015. The album was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace, and will be released via Loma Vista Recordings. The album’s artwork – depicting a city that forms a portrait of Papa in its use of negative space – was created by Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak who also created artwork for Infestissumam. Bielak’s already impressive portfolio features some truly wicked pieces and his musical artist roster includes Behemoth, Sólstafir, Vader and Watain, among others.Meliora – the successor to 2013’s Infestissumam – delivers more of a modern edge with sharper teeth when compared to its predecessor, while maintaining continuity with the overall evolution of the band’s characteristic sound. Opener “Spirit” starts with organ and choir kicking off a 70s rock-inspired journey that features a tasty guitar and keyboard harmony section midway into the song, while the infectious bass groove of “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” lays the foundation for the guitar riff and vocal melody that drive this track through each verse onward into a chorus that sticks in your head long after the music has stopped. “Cirice” begins with a sinister sounding ‘call and response’ guitar melody that breaks into a dark, haunting and dynamic track. You can check out the video below. “Majesty” offers up some Deep Purple/Black Sabbath-worship with its monolithic guitar and organ opening riff, while dark anthem “Absolution” provides us with an enduring chorus, and harmony guitar flourishes that reflect the ongoing influence of 70s-tinged prog-rock found throughout the Ghost discography. “Spöksonat” and “Devil Church” provide instrumental interludes, the former features a brief instrumental keyboard prelude comprised of delicate harp-like samples, while the latter brings the sounds of choir and organ together into a devilishly epic composition.Ghost come out on top offering a compelling addition to the overarching message of self-determined freedom with a well-crafted album that rocks harder than ever. Meliora is Ghost’s strongest effort to date, and the congregation welcomes Papa Emeritus III with open arms.

Album:

Ghost’s new Zev Deans-directed video for their track “He Is” is one of those clips where you’re better off not knowing much about it going in. Suffice to say, the group’s penchant for theatricality with wink is on full display here, with highly entertaining results. Watch:The PRP reports that the video arrives with this statement from the group… “Now we bid adieu to our third psalm…. the party is over.”…by which they obviously mean that the Meliora album cycle is now complete. But fret not, disciples of Papa Emeritus: the band is in the studio even as you read this, hard at work on their next release. Expect that to come out sometime in 2018.

Prequelle is the upcoming fourth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Ghost. It is scheduled for release on June 1, 2018.Prequelle is the fourth studio album by Ghost, and the first to be recorded since the band's frontman was revealed to be Tobias Forge. Produced by Tom Dalgety, recording sessions began in 2017 at Artery Studios in Stockholm, while mixing began at Westlake Studios in West Hollywood in January 2018.On March 31st, 2018 a video titled "Ghost - Chapter One New Blood" was released on the Ghost youtube channel as an advertisment for the album and for the new character frontman Tobias Forge would play, Cardinal Copia.Themes: The loose theme of Prequelle is the concept of "death and doom." Forge also said that it is themed around "medieval times, but it's definitely clinging onto a lot of very current things.""Rats" is about something "spreading as wildfire and completely destroying things quicker than you know," like the Black Death. In another plague reference, "Dance Macabre" aims to capture a "joyous nocturnal sort of life in a disco song," such as people excessively partying because they know they are going to die.The closing track "Life Eternal" asks if you were given the choice to live forever; "Would you want to do that?"

Album:

I found myself in a strange position last year, finding the almost universally praised Ghost album Meliora hit-or-miss. I'd much preferred their previous effort, Infinetessimam, which was conversely met with lukewarm reviews by the public at large. I think I can split the difference on this new EP, Popestar. The five-track EP only features one new Ghost composition, "Square Hammer", but damn is it a corker. Those who still pine for the band to return to the relative heaviness of their first album, Opus Anonymous, still won't give a shit. It's got those same Blue Oyster Cult-meets-ABBA pop hooks that metal purists have been decrying since at least album #2. But for those of us on board with such possibilities, "Square Hammer" is one of the shining gems in the band's catalog. It's a relentless confection of earworm hooks, carnival organ and a harmony chorus that just won't quit. The other four tracks are covers in the vein of the band's 2013 EP If You Have Ghosts. The song selection is just that much more adventurous than on the previous extended play. First up is "Nocturnal Me", an old Echo & the Bunnymen cut from their classic Ocean Rain album… you know, the one with "The Killing Moon", although that was thankfully considered too obvious to cover here. The Ghost version adds a bit more beef to the original's post-punk guitar tone, registering somewhere between old Marilyn Manson and H.I.M., but better than that comparison might sound."I Believe" shows that Ghost do indeed listen to music from this century, it having originated on Simian Mobile Disco's 2007 album, Attack Decay Sustain Release. This one is primarily a showcase for Papa Emeritus III's crooning, accompanied only by a light synth chorus and brushed drums. It's a decent rendition in its own right that seems more like an interlude tying the heavier songs together, sandwiched as it is in the middle of the sequencing.Next up is "Missionary Man", a huge hit for the Eurythmics back in 1986: one of their last really big ones, and one which gets almost zero nostalgia spins 30 years later. The heavy, bombastic guitars work really well on this one, although Emeritus' weirdly nasal intonation sounds uncomfortably like the sprechgesang of Fred Scheider of the B-52's. Still a decent stab at an unfairly overlooked 80's pop classic. Finally we have a song that nearly everyone hearing this, myself included, will have been heretofore unfamiliar with: "Bible" by Swedish band Imperiet. Also dating from 1986, this song features the gated drums, gospel chorus and ringing, atonal guitars that would be expected out of a song from the era (if Imperiet hadn't written this song, Mike & the Mechanics would have had to). "Bible" is one of the most epic and unapologetically grandiose pop statements Ghost have ever released, even if they didn't actually write it. If you can't get into this you just don't fuck with the 80's, and at this point that means maybe you shouldn't be fucking with Ghost either.

Album:

Ghost one of the most esteemed and celebrated rock bands in the world today return with their fifth psalm, IMPERA, fronted by the newly anointed Papa Emeritus IV. A dozen songs take on themes of isolation and demigod worship, as well as colonization of both space and mind.2018's Prequelle was a divisive record for Ghost, to say the least. While still wielding their tried-and-true brand of gothic arena rock/doom metal (as if they're hellbent on taking over for Goblin when it comes to scoring 1970s-esque Giallo films), many fans and publications—including us—felt that it was a bit too safe, cheesy, poppy, and self-indulgent. Although follow-up Impera doesn't rewrite the rulebook or deviate too drastically from Ghost's established formula, its emphasis on heavier and trickier arrangements and melodies makes it a marked improvement over its predecessor.Like countless other recent releases, Impera was heavily delayed due to the pandemic; in fact, it was initially scheduled to arrive around the end of summer 2020. As for its concept, mastermind Tobias Forge/Papa Emeritus IV explains that he came up with it several years ago and that it centers on "the rise and ultimately the unescapable fails and falls of empires." He also notes that whereas Prequelle's primary theme (about the 14th century Afro-Eurasian Black Death) was "a tiny tad more spiritual and philosophical," this LP's tale of extinction is "a little bit more practical" (due in part to its parallels to modern times). With help from his ever-changing arsenal of Nameless Ghouls—as well as guests such as drummer Hux Nettermalm, pianist Martin Hederos, and Opeth guitarist Fredrik Åkesson—Forge brings his tale to life with irresistible flair and fieriness.Impera immediately reveals itself as a grander and stronger work (compared to Prequelle) thanks to the gorgeously morose and ominous opener, "Imperium." Starting with downtrodden acoustic guitar arpeggios, it soon evolves to include stacked electric guitar outcries, marching percussion, powerful piano chords, and other imposingly fatalistic timbres. It definitely gets you in the mood for what's to come, and fortunately, subsequent interludes "Dominion" and "Bite of Passage" uphold that cinematic vibe with foreboding horns and atmospheric tapestries, respectively.In-between, Ghost deliver some of their catchiest and/or most lavishly arranged belters. Specifically, the first proper song—"Kaisarion"—kicks off with a stadium rock scream and Queen-esque guitarwork. Then, it sets up the aforementioned main topic with charmingly detailed rhymes ("Kaisarion, a prophecy told / We're building our empire from the ashes of an old"), highly engaging hooks, and bursts of vintage progressive rock complexity. Rarely have they married fetching songwriting and sophisticatedly adventurous instrumentation this well.Later, the epic dual guitar licks of lead single "Hunter's Moon" make it just as compelling, while "Watcher in the Sky" enticingly blends djent intensity with soaring choruses and "Twenties" marginally evokes the irregular peculiarities of System Of A Down. As superb as those tracks are, Impera's crowning achievement is closer "Respite on the Spitalfields." It segues out of "Bite of Passage" with an air of vibrant yet stern closure (as most great finales do), building from a riff-heavy ballad to a magnificently bittersweet and multilayered extravaganza that leaves you in awe. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it's a clear contender for the band's finest composition to date.Even the album's softer and more radio-friendly pieces—which are typically their most contentious ones—are at home and extremely enjoyable. Yes, "Spillways" conjures Foreigner's "Cold As Ice," but its triumphant block harmonies and darker elements can't help but appeal. Likewise, "Call Me Little Sunshine" is a heartfelt, almost pastoral ode with just enough edge to satisfy, whereas "Grift Wood" is too enchantingly decorated and tuneful to write off. Honestly, you can't help but adore and sing along to it.Impera is undoubtedly a huge step up from Prequelle if not one of Ghost's best collections period. Sure, it's still a tad more accessible and light compared to their first two or three albums—prioritizing welcoming rock over weird metal in most cases—but that's hardly a flaw considering how unified and exciting it is. Although no creative work is perfect, it's difficult to find a single lackluster moment or entire misstep on Impera, making it a victorious return to form (at least somewhat) and a generally exceptional record.

Album:

With an upcoming tour with Amon Amarth coming later this summer, Ghost gives us a five song EP to whet our appetites a bit for some more gothy, pop-inspired goodness. Phantomime is a stellar record that's only going to get Ghost fans even hungrier for more from their favorite preacher as they follow him along the left hand path. The opener, "See No Evil," will have you bouncing along with it's massive bass. It's very prominent in the mix along with some Gary Numan-sounding keyboards. A modern guitar solo makes an appearance as well, updating the very '80s sonics of the Television classic. This is a cover that will have you toe tapping and foot stomping without missing a beat as Ghost takes a relatively simple straight-forward rocker and adds their own brand of gothic atmosphere. They elevate the track it into something much larger and bombastic than the original. You can't help but love it immediatly."Jesus He Knows Me" features a really big sound as Ghost seems to utilize a large amount of Nameless Ghouls on many different instruments to pull this cover off. It's significantly heavier and meatier than the original Genesis version which first appeared on the band's 1991 record, We Can't Dance. The song, of course, was released as Genesis' critique of televangelists who were duping millions of Americans out of large amounts of cash all in the name of Jesus. With that, I do particularly love the lyric towards the end of the track where Papa sings, "I'm counting my blessings and I've found true happiness cuz I'm getting richer day by day." The irony is particularly compelling here as I keep forking over more and more dollars myself to Ghost as I stare at my collection of Ghost action figures that live above my desk as I write this review. The thing is, I'm perfectly content spending even more money on Ghost merch as long as they keep churning out bangers like this one.Ghost's version of "Hanging Around" immediately grabs your attention with a keyboard introduction that comes right out of the John Lord (Deep Purple) playbook. It is a more pronounced use of the instrument compared to the original cut. Ghost also adds a much heavier production and added layers of backing vocals when compared to the original Strangler's tune. All together we really get a punk rock meets Deep Purple type of atmosphere that makes the cover rather intriguing and distinct from the original. The crown jewel of the EP is, without a doubt, their breathtaking cover of the Iron Maiden classic "Phantom of the Opera." This is from the Paul Di'anno era of the band and specifically comes from the self-titled 1981 masterpiece. What has always stood out to me on this song, as a longstanding fan of Maiden, has been Steve Harris' bass, which is so intricate and so forward in the mix. When I first heard that Ghost was covering the song, I was actually a bit hesitant thinking to myself, "Can they really pull this off while doing justice to Steve?" The answer, of course, is a resounding yes as whichever Ghoul plays the bass on this cut seems to have made a deal with the devil himself.I also love how Ghost integrates some piano along with the lead guitar about three minutes into the track, giving the cover a unique spin. It's these little accents here and there like this that help Tobias Forge craft something new from a classic. He has this distinct knack for really making all of his covers his own while not straying too far from the original canvas. That John Lord-style keyboard makes another appearance in the final track of this ridiculously marvelous record at the very beginning of "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)." Ghost really takes a risk here and decides to take on an '80s classic that was originally performed by living legend Tina Turner. This song was a huge radio hit that came from the third Mad Max film which also featured Turner as a member of the cast. Now clearly Forge doesn't have the pipes of Tina Turner, and smartly, he doesn't try and match Turner's vocal. Rather he changes it just a bit to keep it within his register abilities. Additionally, Papa and company give the song a bit more heft and heaviness with the addition of more guitars. Now I was waiting for the sax solo in the track (originally performed by Timmy Capello) and another possible resurrection from Papa Emeritus Nihil but, alas, the original sax solo is swapped out in favor of a shorter, punchier guitar solo. Still completely works. As someone who was alive when all of the originals were released, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with the direction that Ghost took with all of the covers. Injecting their own Gothic style into pop and arena rock is what this band does so well and the band essentially puts on a clinic of how to do covers with the Phantomime EP. This is not only a must have for any Ghost fan, this a record that can be enjoyed by so many outside of the continuously growing congregation.
