Bio:

Epic, melodic metal highly influenced by the likes of bands like Helloween and Iron Maiden.“I wanted a band name that conveyed brute strength, but also knowledge and intellect” says vocalist Steve Montoya as he describes the origins of his band’s name. “The Z was thrown in to replace the S just to mix things up a bit.”Since it’s incarnation in the summer of 2004, Savage Wizdom has been a staple on the local scene in the southwest United States. Formed by ex-Prowler vocalist Steve Montoya, guitarists Wes Rivera and Chris Herrera, bassist Morris Branch and drummer Chris Salazar, the band members had all come from different musical backgrounds and soon realized that there was little common ground in terms of influences among them.Using this to their advantage, the band began to craft a sound that had the punch and aggression of some of the modern metal bands with the sensibility of the 80’s metal music. After three years of playing in the bars and clubs in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the band had amassed a substantial amount of original material and in the fall of 2007 released their debut full-length release; No Time For Mercy. However, for some of the members, it seemed that the band had run it’s course and by the end of the year the group had disbanded.Montoya was not ready to call it quits on the group and in February 2008 decided to reform it. With a new line-up now consisting of his son Steven on guitar, ex-Fear Of God drummer Steve Cordova, guitarist Pablo Roybal and bassist Sean Coblentz, the band re-emerged on the local scene in late 2008 and began to regain the momentum that had been cut short less than a year earlier. As new songs began to emerge, the identity of the new Savage Wizdom began to reveal itself as being more melodically based than the group that had been featured on the debut album. The themes were still similar, but with the new band came a renewed sense of drive and determination that was reflected in the music. Gone were the thrashy Slipknot based influences that were prevalent on the first album and in it’s place emerged a more sophisticated and melodious sound heavily influenced by the likes of Iron Maiden and Helloween. The band welcomed their newest member James Stuart III in the summer of 2014 when Sean Coblentz left to pursue another path in his life. For James, who had attended almost every one of the band’s shows since the reformation, the experience of transitioning from a fan in the audience to a full fledged member of the group was “a dream come true.” The appreciation was mutual as his enthusiasm for the music breathed new life into the band when they needed it most. Now, with a new release aptly titled: A New Beginning, the band stands taller and more proud than ever before. Tracks like “Do Or Die” and “Chase The Dragon” reflect the attitude of daring to chart your own course through life. “Shattered Lives” speaks of one of the darkest chapters in human history while songs like “Point Of No Return,” “FarAway” and the heavy hitting title track carry the central theme of the album. Indeed, the band members feel that this is the strongest material that they have ever been involved The current line-up of the band is proud to support the original vision of where it came from. With the band members ranging in ages, there is certainly no shortage of knowledge, experience and wisdom from very different perspectives. Above all, they hope that their music will be a source of both entertainment and empowerment for their listeners as they unleash this new animal in front of unsuspecting crowds, large or small.“The day of reckoning has come at last...”

Album:

This is the second album from US Power Metal band Savage Wizdom. This is ambitious Heavy/Power Metal with long songs and an epic feel. The band have an earthy sound that’s strong enough to showcase the band’s skill but gritty enough to lend the music an aggressive air.The songs are a blend of Traditional Heavy Metal and European Power Metal influences. Think of a mixture of Iron Maiden, Dio and Gamma Ray.The songs are catchy and memorable, with plenty of hooks to grab the attention.Savage Wizdom make their music in a very accessible manner that’s easy to digest. It’s Metal that seems to roll out of the speakers in a very pleasing way, like honey being poured. It’s tasty and filling, yet leaves you wanting more. The vocalist has a decent voice that has echoes of the singers of Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche, tempered with a more earthy edge, similar to the album as a whole. He has good range and can hit the high notes when needed. He knows his style inside out and gives a spirited performance. The musicianship is well-played, with all instruments made the most of. Riffs, leads and solos are abundant and the rhythm section of drums and bass is a tight one.The album could do with a little polish here and there, but this is largely a small issue as overall A New Beginning is a very enjoyable slab of Heavy Metal.

Album:

Do you remember a time when heavy metal was dangerous? When even the rumor of an upcoming release was enough to make your body shiver? When bands were committed into delivering maelstorms of heavy metal and not generic metal albums just for the hype? If you do, then worry not since Steve Montoya is determined to bring these times back: SAVAGE WIZDOM came into the spotlight a couple of years ago with the “A New Beginning”, their second album, a testament of how Power Metal should be played. It was one of those rare times when an album was so inspired, powerful and “metal” that I felt that this band should never record another song again.Well yes, I was certainly thinking that they could never reach the unreachable peak of “A New Beginning”, but here it is, the new album, several years later and from the first notes of the entry track: “Life on the Run” I knew that mister Montoya and the rest of the lads achieved the impossible: “Who’s Laughing Now” is a solid monolith of Power Metal in its purest and unblemished form: Wandering through the endless maze of underground 90’s metal SAVAGE WIZDOM bring to front the best of the obscure 90s Power Metal influences from the four corners of the earth: from the proprietors of the scene, HELLOWEEN, SCANNER, HEAVEN’S GATE, RIOT, to obscurities like STEEL WARRIOR, CRYSTAL EYES, RAWHEAD REXX and even the mythical early TIERRA SANTA, early RHAPSODY, FINAL CHAPTER, HEIMDALL, ADRAMELCH, WHITE SKULL, SHADOWS of STEEL, HATRED, MARAUDER, early INNERWISH and the list goes on forever. This is true Power Metal, lyrical, sentimental, full of power and passion. Check out the masterful “Dark Horizon” a song made for all those 90’s boomers who read 90’s European fanzines, “Revenge for a king” a war-torn song that exceeds every expectation, or the final song, the eleven minute “The Wreck of the Titan” an absolute epic.Listening to this album I felt that my faith in Power Metal is renewed. This is by far one of the, (if not THE) BEST power metal albums of the last ten years, a true supernova of power and passion. This is happening now, this band is making history, don’t miss it unless you want to mention in as an “underestimated gem” in the future. SAVAGE WIZDOM are making a stand, therefore make sure that you are on their side.
