Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. The group was considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene during the 1980s. When the genre's popularity increased, Anthrax was one of its "big four" with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. As of 2014 the band has released ten studio albums, a number of singles and an EP with American hip hop group Public Enemy. According to Nielsen SoundScan Anthrax sold 2.5 million records in the United States from 1991 to 2004, with worldwide sales of over 15 million.Noted for its live performances, Anthrax signed with the independent label Megaforce Records (which released the band's debut studio album in 1984). Lilker soon left the band to form Nuclear Assault, and was replaced by roadie Frank Bello. Vocalist Neil Turbin left shortly after and was replaced by Joey Belladonna. With a new lineup, the band recorded Spreading the Disease (distributed by Island Records) in 1985. Anthrax's third album, Among the Living, was released in 1987 to critical praise. The band experienced another lineup change in 1992, when John Bush replaced Belladonna as lead vocalist. Sound of White Noise was released the following year, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. Studio recordings during the 1990s saw the band,influenced by other genres, experimenting with its sound.Anthrax's lineup has changed several times. Paul Kahn and Greg Walls were early replacements for drummer Dave Weiss and bassist Kenny Kushner; the band has had a number of vocalists, including Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna and John Bush. Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, who joined Anthrax in 1983, are the only band members to appear on every album; bassist Frank Bello has played on every album except the band's first. Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Worship Music is the tenth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax.The album was released on September 12, 2011 internationally, and on September 13 in the United States. It was the band's first album of original material since We've Come for You All (2003), the first full-length Anthrax album since 1990's Persistence of Time to feature vocalist Joey Belladonna, and the final album with guitarist Rob Caggiano prior to his departure in January 2013.Anthrax return after a long, tumultuous absence from the record bins with their new album ‘Worship Music,’ a stunningly cohesive re-assertion of their strength and precision.It’s been eight years since Anthrax’s last album, 2003’s ‘We’ve Come for You All,’ their fourth and final album with John Bush on vocals.Since then, the band reunited with golden-era lead singer Joey Belladonna for some touring. They then parted ways again, and recruited Dan Nelson to sing on an early version of ‘Worship Music.’Just when it looked like the record would finally come out, in 2009, Nelson was out, too, to be replaced on tour briefly by Bush and then finally on record by Belladonna. Got all that?OK, well, throw it all out, it’s ancient history now.Cause all that really matters is that this record absolutely smokes. The 20 years since Belladonna’s last record with Anthrax, 1990’s ‘Persistence of Time,’ doesn’t seem to have affected their natural chemistry one bit.Unlike the last two (and very very good) Bush-era records, which leaned slightly in a hard rock direction, ‘Worship Music’ finds Anthrax very solidly in thrash mode. The opening trio of ‘Earth on Hell,’ the absolutely undeniable ‘The Devil You Know’ (reviewed here) and ‘Fight ‘Em Till You Can’t’ are gonna cause a lot of hearing damage as the faithful give in to the urge to play them often and at ever increasing volume.But what really makes this album special is the two epics that follow – ‘I’m Alive’ and ‘In the End,’ which both demonstrate a very special, non-boring type of maturity and musical growth. It’s not that they’re ballads, by any means, but by taking the pedal off the gas just a little bit, and perhaps bringing the vocals forward in the mix a touch, Anthrax has hit on a powerful, ‘Sad but True’-type of groove that really shows off their songwriting skills.All that … and you’re just halfway through the album. There’s very little in the way of filler the rest of the way out, with the call and response of ‘The Giant’ and the B-movie monster stomp of ‘The Constant’ serving as our personal highlights.Really, Anthrax couldn’t have named this album any better. These songs are going to fit perfectly next to the band’s classics on their upcoming tour. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next one!
Anthems is the sixth EP by American thrash metal band Anthrax. It was released on March 19, 2013 through Megaforce Records in North America, and three days later in Europe by Nuclear Blast.This was the group's last release to feature lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, who left the band subsequently. The record features cover songs from some of the band's favorite acts of the 1970s, along with two versions of "Crawl", a song from their previous studio album, Worship Music.The EP was recorded during 2012 at various locations. Although it was initially scheduled to be released as part of a special edition of Worship Music, the record was released both separately and on a deluxe edition. It received favorable reviews by music critics and debuted at number 52 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 8,500 copies in its first week of release. By April 10, 2013, Anthems had sold 14,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.Anthrax intended to release Anthems as a tribute to the bands that influenced them over the years. Vocalist Joey Belladonna explained: "These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It's just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs."When asked how the band got the idea to do such a record, bassist Frank Bello answered: "The reason why that happened, if you ever came to an Anthrax sound check, you'd probably hear every other song but an Anthrax song." He further said that the band got the idea while jamming to some older songs. "We just wanted to say this is where we also came from. That gave us our start and that is what sparked us."The band started working on this project in the summer of 2012. The album was recorded in 2012 at different locations: at drummer Charlie Benante's home studio, in producer Jay Ruston's New York studio and during tour.Some of the tracks were recorded earlier, during the recording sessions of their previous studio release Worship Music.Benante, in an interview for Loudwire, stated: "To commemorate the first year of Worship Music being out, we're putting together a little companion EP with some fun shit on it." The original idea was to record a few songs that would have been placed on a deluxe edition of their previous album, but the band did not manage to finish the project in time. However, when the band had recorded enough songs, they contacted their US and European labels who offered to put out Anthems as a stand-alone EP, a proposal which the band accepted.In addition, Benante and artist Stephen Thompson have redesigned each track's original artwork to "Anthrax" it.
