Bio:

Combining crushing riffs with ethereal, post-rock soundscapes, Final Coil offer up a quintessentially English take on alternative rock. Formed by frontman Phil Stiles, the Leicester-based band went through the usual trials and tribulations of finding a stable line-up with the one constant being lead guitarist Richard Awdry.Initially rooted in the explosive experimentation of the US underground scene, early Final Coil shows were noisy, messy affairs with broken equipment scattered across the stage and waves of arcing feedback left echoing around dark venues with sticky floors. With time, the band evolved to take a more nuanced approach, weaving stately, Gilmour-esque solos into the dense, metallic riffs and experimenting with layers of vocal harmonies reminiscent of Alice in Chains and Anathema. It was this more-evolved musical approach that attracted Jola Stiles; a Polish-born bassist with a jazz background, enabling the band to develop their sound yet further. With Jola in place, Final Coil recorded an acoustic EP that added flute, waves of synth and delicate piano to the mix. A major shift in the band’s sound, the Somnambulant EP demonstrated a newfound maturity of expression although live shows remained Adrenalin-soaked examples of pure-rock fury.

Album:

There’s something both exciting and unique about Leicester quartet Final Coil’s first full length album.Opener ‘Corruption‘ blends crunching guitars with hauntingly melodious vocals, which immediately brings to mind the work of the likes of Alice In Chains. So far, so post grunge. But if ‘Corruption’ makes you think you know where ‘Persistence Of Memory’ is going, then you couldn’t be more wrong. The beauty of the album is that you never know what to expect from one track to the next. There are the stripped back, numbers such as the ethereal ‘Failed Light’, a 10 minute epic that, just when you start to think it’s going to be entirely instrumental, goes direct for the heart with the emotive vocal, and second track ‘Dying’, which could well be the missing link between Alice In Chains’ ‘Sap’ and ‘Jar Of Flies’ EPs. It’s here that the the raw beauty of frontman Phil Stiles’ voice really begins to hit home. But Final Coil are equally at home rocking out, as the crunchier tracks on offer here prove.‘Myopic’ provides fuzzed up guitars and ear splitting riffs married brilliantly to the eclectic vocals, while ‘In Silent Reproach’ powers along on a wave of Tool inspired guitars, before hitting on a darker grunge sound. Meanwhile, ‘Moths To The Flame’ provides more pounding riffs, before easing into a harmonic section that evokes the memory of Smashing Pumpkins at their peak, before they were consumed by the overbearing weight of Billy Corgan’s ego. Then we have the more experimental numbers that add a bit of synth to the mix, such as ‘You Waste My Time’, which starts off sounding like the more ambient side of Deftones then explodes into beautiful life, finishing on a noisy, frenetic high ideally suited to a live arena, or album closer ‘Alienation’.Coming across as a bizarre experiment to mix the early John Carpenter movie scores with the ambient, progressive sound of someone like Maybeshewill, ‘Alienation’ makes fully sure that ‘Persistence Of Memory’ ends on a notable high. There’s just so much going on over the course of the album that there is likely to be something for pretty much everyone. Never resting on their laurels, Final Coil throw influences such as Tool, Deftones, Alice In Chains and Pink Floyd into one huge frying pan, then add a smattering of industrial tinged seasoning to create a veritable musical full English breakfast of epic proportions. No need for a sausage breakwater here, as everything here is mixed up to perfection. After making an impact with their earlier EP releases, Final Coil have pulled out all the stops on their full length debut, and created an album that is likely to be troubling the ‘Best Of’ lists come the end of 2017. Equal parts atmospheric, beautifully haunting and mind numbingly heavy, with no weak link to be found, ‘Persistence Of Memory’ is a release that should certainly be added to your “must buy” list.

Album:

Since their earliest beginnings Final Coil have created music of substance, songs of inspired musical imagination and lyrical weight, carefully sculpted from deep wells of thought and emotion. Each release from this remarkable band is a sonic edifice to be admired, a monument of creativity to stand the test of time. New album, The World We Inherited represents the crowning glory of a triptych of records begun with their vibrant debut The Persistence Of Memory and continued with the highly critically acclaimed The World We Left Behind For Others. As ever with Final Coil it represents a huge stride forward into ever richer and more colourful landscapes of sound and more challenging, thought provoking lyrical exploration. It is an album for now and an album for the decades to come.Whereas the albums that preceded it examined our past, the societal failings that have brought us to our troubled present, The World We Inherited turns its gaze to the future and the shadows of fear and division that bleed across its horizon. Inspired in no small part by a long and winding conversation with Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman and the prophetic, dystopian fiction of George Orwell, The World We Inherited wanders through a murky, broken world of conspiracy theories, authoritarian politics and chilling isolation. Yet while the lyrics and concepts provide the framework for The World We Inherited, it’s the beautifully textured music that draws the listener into the world of Final Coil and enfolds them in a breath taking experience encompassing overwhelming melancholy, fierce intensity, passion, terror, confusion and starlit glimmers of hope. Drawing on the textures of post-rock, the emotional drive of grunge, the fire of heavy rock and the imaginative sorcery of progressive rock and metal the Final Coil sound is both fresh and original and also rooted in an array of influences from across the musical spectrum. The fluid bass work of Jola Stiles both augments and anchors the entwined guitars of Phil Stiles and Richard Awdry, while the vibrant, instinctive drumming of Barry French steers the band through the exquisite song structures, as Phil’s emotive vocals tell each chapter of the unfolding tale.To ensure that The World We Inherited benefitted from the very best sound quality possible Final Coil recorded at Parlour Studios with producer Russ Russell (Amorphis, The Wildhearts, Napalm Death etc), who has also mixed and mastered the album, such was his enthusiasm for the project. The panoramic artwork that adorns The World We Inherited was created for the band by Andy Pilkington (Mordred, Flotsam & Jetsam, Rock Goddess, Skindred etc), continuing a working relationship that began with The Persistence Of Memory album. Completing the visual presentation Final Coil worked with renowned photographer Ester Segarra (Ghost, Tribulation, Venom etc) to capture an appropriate band image for the album's apocalyptic vibe.
