Bio:

Soilwork is a Swedish band from Helsingborg. They are signed to Nuclear Blast. Formed in late 1995 by Björn Strid and Peter Wichers, originally under the name Inferior Breed, the band changed their name in late 1996 to Soilwork (meaning "working from the ground up").Formed in late 1995, originally under the name Inferior Breed. Their sound, as explained by "Speed" was influenced by such bands as Pantera, Meshuggah, and Carcass.Upon changing their band name in late 1996 to Soilwork they began to make more melodic music.Soilwork began work on a demo entitled In Dreams We Fall into the Eternal Lake. Before the recording ever took place, bassist Carl-Gustav Döös left the group, leaving guitarist Peter Wichers to handle the bass tracks on the demo. In a chance encounter, Soilwork met Michael Amott of Arch Enemy fame, who owned a record store in Helsingborg, and gave him a copy of their demo. This ultimately led to the band signing with Listenable Records.

Album:

The Living Infinite is the ninth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Soilwork, released on 27 February 2013 in Asia, 1 March 2013 in Europe, on 4 March 2013 in the UK and on 5 March 2013 in the US. It is the band's first double album. It is also the first Soilwork release to feature new guitarist David Andersson; founding guitarist Peter Wichers left Soilwork for the second time in 2012, making this the second album to not feature him. This also marks the band's last album with longtime bassist Ola Flink who parted ways with the band right before the recording of the next album The Ride Majestic. The album received high acclaim. Trey Spencer of Sputnikmusic gave the album a "Superb" rating of 4.3/5, praising the album's heavier sound, dynamic songwriting and melodic, progressive content. Calling it Soilwork's "strongest, most consistent album to date", he stated that the band "have simultaneously stepped back to their past while maintaining their current sound, but they have also diversified their formula more than ever before – and they did so without a single filler track."[10] However, writing for Decibel Magazine, Adrien Begrand stated that "the primary flaw of The Living Infinite is its lack of variety, the cookie-cutter nature of the songwriting wearing thin after the halfway point".In the United States, the album debuted at No. 60 on the Billboard 200, and No. 20 on the Top Rock Albums, selling 7,800 copies in its first week. The album has sold 26,000 copies in the US as of August 2015.

Album:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the formation of Sweden’s melodic death metallers Soilwork and I have to confess to having never fully familiarised myself with their output. They’re one of those bands who have always existed on the peripheries of my awareness; a band I’ve always noted to check out because they strike me as the kind of thing I might like. “Oh,” I thought, “This new live CD will be a great introduction to the group.” Ladies and gentlemen, Live in the Heart of Helsinki is not a good introduction to Soilwork. That’s not to say that it’s a bad album – far from it. But, clocking in at over one hour and 42 minutes and comprised of 23 tracks, Live in the Heart of Helsinki is definitely one for the completists. For newcomers, it can be a bit of a chore to sit through. On show is a romp through the band’s back catalogue, with tracks taken from every single album. Of course, as might be expected, there is a heavy reliance upon material from their latest full-length album, 2013’s The Living Infinite, but not so much as to be overbearing. The great thing about live albums is that they free the songs from the production shackles in which they’ve been chained for the duration of their existence, allowing the listener to hear all of the songs in the same context without prejudice. The striking thing about Soilwork is just how damned consistent they’ve been over the past twenty years. Classics ‘Bastard Chain’ and ‘Black Star Deceiver’ sit comfortably alongside newer material such as ‘Tongue’ and ‘Let This River Flow’, such that you’d never expect there to be a 12 year gap between their recordings.Of course, when it comes to live albums, everything hinges on two things; the production quality and the execution. The production is about as good as live albums get – all of the instruments are dense and vibrant, maintaining their identity and occupying their own space in the mix. Even the toms sound clear, though the keyboards do have a tendency to get drowned in the undertow from time to time. The performance quality here is by far Live in the Heart of Helsinki’s biggest asset. It’s astonishing to hear a band play such an aggressive, lengthy set with only a collection of imperfections between them. This is a band operating at the top of their game, and it shows through the quality of Strid’s vocals as he switches from clean to aggressive, or in the astounding precision of the ‘Bastard Chain’ guitar dual between Andersson and Coudret. If you consider yourself a Soilwork superfan then it would be worth investing in the DVD Blu-ray set, which comes complete with a(n optional) lanyard and backstage pass replica. However, it should be noted that, while the video editing is fantastic and really catches the energy of the live show, the picture quality isn’t brilliant, largely due to the complex lighting setup that it has to contend with.I think you already know whether you’re going to like this or not, don’t you? And if you’re the kind of person who’s going to buy this, then you will probably do so regardless of the views expressed in this review. So why have you wasted your time reading it? You wally.

Album:

Visionary Swedish metallers SOILWORK were quite busy for the past two and a half years. A double album, an exclusive EP for Asia, a live DVD, an extensive world tour – no time to rest and boom! Here we go again with yet another masterpiece called »The Ride Majestic«.Marking new bass player Markus Wibom's (ex-HEARTS ALIVE) addition to the band, »The Ride Majestic« picks up where they left off with their critically acclaimed double album »The Living Infinite«. While musically exploring darker grounds than ever before the band also „strayed away a bit from the "regular song structures" and have been a bit more spontaneous as well, giving in for the moment and not care to much of the consequences so to speak,“ as singer Björn „Speed“ Strid puts it. But fear not, those amazingly catchy choruses, melodies and powerful riff and drum attacks that are so connected with the SOILWORK universe are still very present – just check out the opening title track and first single and you will agree!Lyrically the band dug deep into the principle of life and death. Something SOILWORK tragically had to experience all the way through the production process of »The Ride Majestic« as Strid explains: „Just about every member of the band had a death in the family while recording the album. On top of that, a good friend of ours in a very promising and young band called CHRONUS from Helsingborg, also passed away out of nowhere. 19 years old. Absolutely terrible. We came up with this title to remember what we've gone through together and make it a hymn to those we've lost and celebrate their lives. It's also a reminder that this life we're living is a majestic ride after all. Hopefully that ride will somehow continue once we pass away. The majestic ride is eternal. I think that happens when you lose somebody close - you want them to live on. This is our tribute.“Guest vocal appearances feature SONIC SYNDICATE's Nathan James Biggs on 'Father and Son, Watching The World Go Down' and Pascal Poulsen of ODIUM on 'The Phantom'.A European headlining tour will take place in November / December 2015.

Album:

Even though visionary swedish metallers SOILWORK are still heavily supporting their most recent masterpiece, »The Ride Majestic«, the sextet compiled a must have for every fan out there. The special collection of rarities under the monicker »Death Resonance« is nothing like your average best-of output, it delivers two brand new tracks as well as rarely released songs of the past 11 years, going back until their opus magnum, »Stabbing The Drama«. Commented singer Björn "Speed" Strid: "The cover for »Death Resonance« is made by Mircea Eftemie and in many ways he managed to capture what we went through while recording »The Ride Majestic«: the sorrow, the close encounter with death, the aftermath and also the existential cogitation that came with it. It links those albums together, even though »Death Resonance« contains unreleased material from 2005 and forward. The cover almost seems like a link between life and death and not only captures where the band is right now, but also where we've been and what lies ahead."

Album:

This is the twelfth album from Soilwork, a veteran Swedish metal band. After really enjoying 2019’s Verkligheten, it’s a pleasure to hear some new Soilwork material. Övergivenheten continues with the ever-satisfying Soilwork sound, yet evolves it at the same time. Rich melodies, soaring choruses, and strong songwriting lurk around every corner, as they always do, but on this occasion the focus is slightly different. This is a lengthy album at 65 minutes, but the band make the most of the time by diversifying their delivery, with the individual songs focusing more on one aspect of their style or another. This is the most expansive Soilwork have sounded, and Övergivenheten has a greater breadth than I was expecting, (while never losing the core of the Soilwork sound). The album’s darker themes don’t always necessarily translate to darker music. Many of the melodies deployed on Övergivenheten are bright and uplifting, with some being quite jaunty and folky, (in fact, folk influences rear their head a few times across the album, in a few different ways and instruments). There’s a progressive feel to parts of the music; aspects of classic 70s progressive rock can be felt haunting these new tunes, consumed by the Soilwork machine. This feeling is not restricted to just the keyboards as it is in some bands, but is present at the heart of the songwriting. Not just progressive rock but hard rock too; The Night Flight Orchestra‘s influence is clear on almost every part of this album’s sound. The band’s atmospheric side has also been given the freedom to roam widely, and much of the material focuses on atmosphere and mood over direct-impact metallic riffing, for example. Added to this are acoustic elements, which add extra texture to the album. That’s not to say that Soilwork have jettisoned the metal, of course; we still get moments of heaviness and aggression, but these are used more sparingly. There are still blast beats on Övergivenheten, and the music isn’t completely devoid of melodic death metal by any means.Övergivenheten is Soilwork’s most layered and intricate album. It’s great to hear the band ply their trade once more, yet do so in a much developed way.Very highly recommended.
