Bio:

In This Moment is an American metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed by singer Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth in 2005. They found drummer Jeff Fabb and started the band as Dying Star. Unhappy with their musical direction, they changed their name to In This Moment and gained two band members, guitarist Blake Bunzel and bassist Josh Newell. In late 2005, bassist Newell left the band and was replaced by Pascual Romero, who in turn was quickly replaced by Jesse Landry. Landry was replaced by Kyle Konkiel in 2009 and Konkiel was replaced by Travis Johnson in 2010. Jeff Fabb and Blake Bunzel left the band in 2011, and were replaced by Tom Hane and Randy Weitzel respectively.Their debut album, Beautiful Tragedy, was released in 2007. Their second album, titled The Dream was released the following year debuting at number 73 on the Billboard 200. The band's third album, A Star-Crossed Wasteland was released in 2010, and their fourth album titled Blood was released in August 2012 and debuted at number 15. They have performed on several notable tours and festivals including Ozzfest in 2007 and 2008, Warped Tour in 2009, Download Festival in 2009 and 2013, Mayhem Festival in 2010, Music as a Weapon V tour in 2011, the Uproar Festival in 2012 and the Carnival of Madness tour in 2013. Their fifth album titled Black Widow is scheduled for release this fall.

Album:

Blood is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band In This Moment, released on August 14, 2012 by Century Media Records. As has been the case with every In This Moment album, the record has a different sound, dropping many of the traditional metalcore elements in favor of electronic samples and further experimentation. This is the band's first album to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. For vocalist Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth, the duo at the heart of In This Moment, change came unexpectedly when they found themselves rebuilding the walls around their foundation.Stripped down to their essence, the core of In This Moment is on fire with their fourth album, aptly titled Blood. 'I knew that I wanted this album to bring out elements we've never shown before. This alluring, darker, sinful side of us that no one has ever seen,' says Brink. 'We wanted to find something new within ourselves, and with this album, I'm definitely the boldest I've ever been. I'm not trying to push boundaries. It's not a conscious thing. It's a natural artistic place.' Brink and Howorth began tracking Blood with producer Kevin Churko late last year at The Hideout Studio in Las Vegas, their 3rd with Churko at the helm. With the release of Blood, In This Moment is geared for the next level as musicians, songwriters and performers. 'I want the band to become widespread,' says Brink, 'and that doesn t mean selling out. If you change who you are to become part of another world, then your art is cut short and you jeopardize what you believe in. We're not doing that. Our music is for us first, we write it for us; we're doing our own special thing that you can only identify with us. We can do that and still be connected, still love the underground world, and tap into new crowds and people who can understand the music. We love what we're doing and are ready to have more people know about us.

Album:

At this point, IN THIS MOMENT is unstoppable. The band may yet have HALESTORM and LACUNA COIL to contend with if supremacy over this branch of hard rock is its goal. Yet the band's newest offering, "Ritual", for all its witty pop and electronic shakes behind a perpetual theme of repent and deliverance (you be the judge if that's from Heaven or Hell), is still too inherently dark to cross over to FM. This naturally makes "Ritual" vastly superior. Let's not quibble over bragging rights between the women fronting these popular acts, but do give Maria Brink and IN THIS MOMENT the edge in having the smarts to deliver enormous, cabaret-styled pop rock, forked with Devil's tongue. If you were all over "Black Widow" last go-round, "Ritual" may juice you up even more. The instrumental intro "Salvation" sounds like the calamitous opening theme to an evil version of "Survivor". Here the vibe turns toward sinister gospel with a bluesy kiss slavered into the stomping groove and building riffs on "Oh Lord". The track is audacious, as if spun by DEPECHE MODE and Lady Gaga, which, in reality, would present one hell of a coupling. Maria Brink summons the same self-afflicted penitence that Dave Gahan flings all over the MODE's "Songs of Faith and Devotion" and more recently on "Delta Machine". You might as well add "Personal Jesus" into the mix as Brink's been figuratively cavorting with the Devil and pleas for an equally figurative salvation—whichever harbinger representing north and south welcomes her beckoning. That answer comes later through infernal baptism, played to the same methodology with louder riffs on "River of Fire".You're either going to smile or cringe at IN THIS MOMENT's metalled-up overhaul of Billy Idol on "Black Wedding", which finds Rob Halford checking in with Maria Brink, who yelps and screeches overtop the song's hellish burlesque. "Black Wedding" is goofy, but it is fun and, for his part, Halford sounds exuberant. As if the group hasn't already rolled the bones at much risk here, next comes an interesting cover of Phil Collins's iconic "In The Air Tonight". Though devoid of the smooth, clapping syncopation and anticipatory heat of Collins's original, Maria Brink makes an appealing alternate voice. IN THIS MOMENT slinks its version along an electro groove, updating the song for a generation that was getting its legs in the world when Collins scored big with his soundtrack for Disney's "Tarzan". The echoing coldwave and slippery guitars build toward a less-satisfying finish beyond a mecha-tribal crashing of the epochal drum roll. Even with modern technology and appreciable texture, let's face it: IN THIS MOMENT has a tough act to follow. Nonetheless, the cover is brazen enough you can all but guarantee its pickup in some future action flick, much as "Roots" is bound to haunt numerous workout playlists. If you want to call what IN THIS MOMENT has been doing the past few albums a Gaga-ian rebirth, then at least on "Joan of Arc" it suits the group. The song carries a pumping swing and an obvious wave to the pop megastar from the hard rock trenches. It's what the lackluster mainstream—Lady Gaga being one of the rare exceptions of superpower excellence—should aspire to, along with the stealthy "Twin Flames". A triple dog dare is issued to the pop world to match one of the cleverest songs on this album, "Witching Hour", with its electro-surf groove and subtle wafts of 007-strutting guitar knocks behind Maria Brink's humid glides."Half God Half Devil", less motivating due to its KORN simulations, allows "No Me Importa" to get away with one by slow riding the haplessly repetitious chord patterns you hear (unless you're dulled to such banality) mandating contemporary mainstream music. Maria Brink's refreshingly honest snarls and cheeky flirts, plus attention to detail with piano and strings, dresses up the track like a slithery night on the prowl. It's why IN THIS MOMENT has successfully morphed from 2008's "The Dream", which gave signals to this moment, one where Maria Brink has become the megastar aspirant with only a tough, sales-strapped market to get in her way.

Line-Up:

Maria Brink – lead vocals, piano (2005–present)
Chris Howorth – lead guitar, backing vocals (2005–present)

Album:

A Star-Crossed Wasteland is the third studio album by American metal band In This Moment. The album was first released in Germany on July 9, 2010 and later in the United States by Century Media and was named by Alternative Press as one of the most anticipated releases of 2010.This is the first album not to feature bassist Jesse Landry; it is also the band's last album to feature new bassist Kyle Konkiel, and founding members rhythm guitarist Blake Bunzel and drummer Jeff Fabb.In This Moment first caught my ear with their 2008 release “The Dream” and since then I have been a huge fan. Their latest release “A Star-Crossed Wasteland” is once again a step forward in the right direction for this California based metal quintet. With each album, it is obvious that In This Moment is growing by leaps and bounds as a band. Their spectrum continues to broaden and expand with each album and this album is an example of a band that has found their place in metal by forging their own definitive sound. In This Moment sounds like no other band out there. Originality and having your own distinct sound aren’t easy things to accomplish these days but they’ve managed to pull it off and do it well. The best way I can describe “A Star-Crossed Wasteland” is a collection of songs that are aggressively beautiful. The album seems to be a happy medium between the heavy grindcore of their debut “Beautiful Tragedy” and the more melodic and accessible follow up “The Dream.” There is something for every kind of metal fan on this album. In This Moment totally unleashes the sludgy metalcore style with songs like “Gunshow” and “Blazin'”which has singer Maria Brink’s guttural vocals leading the rest of the band as they trod through the murky sludge filled verses. The band takes a total 180 at times to deliver a more mellow metal sound with songs like the title track and the subtle beauty of album closer “World In Flames.”I personally love it best when In This Moment marries the melodic with the heavy on songs like “Just Drive” and “The Promise.” “Just Drive” is a great example of Maria Brink’s ability to be the heaviest of heavy metal vocalists yet be beautifully melodic to the point of giving me goosebumps. This song in my opinion also showcases the versatile talents of the band. Guitarists Chris Howarth and Blake Bunzel are so in sync with each other that at times it’s like hearing one huge guitar. I love the mix of acoustic and electric guitars and the lead solo is completely face melting. The rhythm section of drummer Jeff Fabb and bassist Kyle Konkiel totally shine through on this song as well sending a sonic blow to the dome that leaves you wondering what the fuck just hit you. “The Promise” is a beautiful song in my book that is a damaged love song of the heaviest proportions that features a duet between Brink and Otherwise vocalist Adrian Patrick. “Standing Alone” is a true testament of just what this band is capable of doing as it has an infectiously catchy chorus and melodically heavy verses. This song is a real repeater as in having to listen to it a few times. Much like “Just Drive,” this song is one that I cannot get enough of.A great album is an album that you can talk about for days and as you can see from this review, this album is one that has spoken to me in volumes. “A Star-Crossed Wasteland” shows In This Moment has grown as a band and that they are just really skimming the surface of what they are capable of. The songs are smart, well thought out, well crafted and delivered with the energy of a band that has the hunger and determination to make their mark in the metal world. With “A Star-Crossed Wasteland” I feel that In This Moment has succeeded in making that mark and I’m already looking forward to seeing where they go from here.In This Moment is about to hit the road with Nonpoint so be sure to catch them in a town near you!

Album:

Beautiful Tragedy is the debut album by the American metal band In This Moment. The album was promoted largely in part by an interview conducted on Sirius Satellite Radio's Hard Attack station, which performed several songs off Beautiful Tragedy and helped expose the band to the heavy metal scene. The band's substantially heavy sound has allowed songs like the single "Prayers" and "Daddy's Falling Angel" frequent airplay on Hard Attack. However, with its strong employment of clean vocals, the title track, "Beautiful Tragedy", has also seen airplay on the Sirius hard rock station, Octane.Metalcore is a very popular sub genre in metal usually because it has elements that come from punk which is very popular sub genre in rock. I started listening to metalcore when I was just a kid and I wasn't that interested in it because I couldn't really find good female fronted metalcore bands. It was really dominated by men (excluding The Agonist and Walls Of Jericho. In my view there is not really a female fronted metalcore band that stands out against the others. But luckily it ended here after I finished listening to Beautiful Tragedy from the female fronted metalcore band In This Moment. I didn't have much expectation at first when I started hearing the album. "Prayers" gave me a good wake up slap in the face and I realized that this song is freakin' awesome. The second song "Beautiful Tragedy" ended my low expectations and I was now examining the album with more effort.Just think of the best metalcore bands out there and morph it into one with a female lead singer and some good talented band members. Yeah, this album is just freakin' awesome to rock out to and just not give a damn about life. It has everything you want to hear in a metalcore album. None of that weak and pathetic expression in the music when you hear metalcore from some female metal singer. Maria Brink just proves metalcore is not just for men, and that women can once dominate the metal genre. This is just a kick ass album! The best song to point out here and give it the award for best song in the album is "Where the Storm Subsides". I'm not a person who cries but this song almost let a tear out of my eyes. It's just that there is so much feeling put into the song and no words can really describe the feeling you get in body while listening to it.I was so joyful after hearing the album because I finally found the female fronted metalcore band I will follow and keep notice of.

Their fifth album titled Black Widow is scheduled for release this fall.

Album:

The Dream is the second album by the American metalcore band In This Moment. The Dream, unlike their last album, features more use of clean vocals and harmonization rather than Maria Brink's high-pitched screams. The first single, "Forever", premiered on the band's Myspace page in August. The album debuted at #73 on the Billboard Top 200 chart with first week sales of more than 8,000 copies.Writing for The Dream began in late 2007 and recording in Las Vegas, Nevada in June 2008. Kevin Churko was enlisted as producer, due to his diverse collaborations with artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Shania Twain, and Britney Spears.Formed in 2005, In This Moment are an American quintet who will shortly be performing in the UK as part of the Give It A Name series of gigs to promote this, their second album. They will then head back across the Atlantic and spend the summer on the famed Warp Tour.If the thought of a metal band fronted by a female singer turns your stomach and evokes memories of Evanescence, you need quite not fear for Maria Brink's vocals do not take the operatic approach. The lesser known Lacuna Coil are a better point of reference, with Maria Brink employing a mix of 'clean' singing and screams, while musically the band indulge in crunching chords, melodies and the odd section of thrashing. 'Forever' is a good representation of the record, an energetic riff kicking it off and a euphoric chorus that wouldn't be lost in bigger venues. 'Lost At Sea' and 'Mechanical Love' could also prove to be sing-a-longs and form part of a strong middle section of 'The Dream', while 'Into The Light' stands out for being a pure ballad. Based around a piano and with haunting strings, the band resist the temptation to bring in guitars at any point, something which they should be commended for as it makes the song much more poignant and unpredictable. A bonus track cover of Blondie's 'Call Me' is wisely faithful apart from being heavier and the only time that the skip button is really required is on the messy noise that constitutes 'The Great Divide'.Generally speaking though, In This Moment have presented a decent album which should find favour with fans of the genre.

Album:

Godmode is the eighth studio album by American rock band In This Moment. The album was released on October 27, 2023, through BMG Rights Management. It is the band's first album to not be produced by Kevin Churko since Beautiful Tragedy (2007). Instead, the album was produced by Kevin's son, Kane Churko, along with Tyler Bates. The album was preceded by four singles: "I Would Die for You", "The Purge", "Godmode", and "Army of Me" (Björk cover).Godmode received generally positive reviews from critics. Dom Lawson of Blabbermouth.net wrote, "In every other respect, this is a strong and gently subversive piece of work. As ever, In This Moment have vast commercial potential, but there is plenty of evidence that they remain slightly too weird and unpredictable for that potential to be fully realized. For that alone, they should be loudly applauded."Kerrang! was positive about the album's sound stating, "From electronic throb and dark pop menace, Godmode persistently creates new textures that nevertheless resolve in ways that will get heads nodding and hands raised at the band's uniquely theatrical live shows."Metal Hammer gave the album a positive review and stated that "Anyone who's been paying attention knows that, for some time, In This Moment have had the live show and back catalogue to grant them access to metal's top tier. If there's any justice in the world, Godmode will be the album that finally sees them break down the door."Mike DeWald of Riff wrote, "At its core, the eighth album from SoCal rockers In This Moment is the natural extension of a sound the band has been cultivating for years." Rock 'N' Load praised the album saying, "All in all, Godmode is a frantically beautiful collection of songs, a perfect change of pace and direction if you need a pallet cleanser. If you haven't delved into the world of In This Moment, this could just be the perfect time to get your hands dirty."[Simon K. of Sputnikmusic wrote that they were surprised by Godmode:"it's their best album since Blood...The band's experimentation with atmosphere comes into fruition on Godmode, and uses their old, heavier style in the process...it's certainly a step in the right direction...If you're a fan of the band's older sound but didn't gel with what they've been doing since 2014, give this a go." Wall of Sound wrote, "This album is excellent, especially if you want something different in the heavy music world."
