Bio:

ANATHEMA began their journey as pioneers of melodic heavy music, influencing a myriad of bands to follow them, before outgrowing all genres and limitations as they fearlessly explored new territory and ways to express feelings through sound. Formed in Liverpool in the early 90's, the band's musical vision has continually evolved over the ensuing years while always remaining true to their original goal of creating forward thinking, meaningful, passionate and honest music. With each release they move beyond the boundaries of limited scenes and pigeon holes, creating a complex and emotive atmospheric sound.Countless world tours have built up a very loyal international fan base and the "Natural Disaster" tour saw them playing hundreds of shows in over 30 countries. The line-up is really a collective of two families, who were quite simply born to play music. Anathema consists of brothers Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh, alongside childhood friends John Douglas and his sister Lee, who is an incredible singer in her own right. The line-up is completed by Les Smith, who beings much in the way of production expertise to the band. There is a deep bond in the group that transcends usual band politics, ego and avarice. They have a shared vision and are about to take the band to a whole new level. Anathema are currently working on an album of brand new material. A multi coloured, multi layered work of unbridled emotion, passion and intensity, it is set to be an album beyond all expectations!

Album:

Anathema brought her career mostly in order to make music that defies any form of naive stereotyped thinking . Founded in the mid-nineties , they brought it to one of the most valued and critically acclaimed rock bands in Britain. Now, with merits such as these in the bag, Anathema return with something that will undoubtedly be viewed as their far erlesenstes album. Produced and mixed by Christer -André Cederberg Cederberg in his studios in Oslo, bears this tenth Anathema studio album entitled " distant satellites " and is also forged ornate as any other of her illustrious canon. And more, it is another bold step into new territory , which reinforces the status of the band as a leading songwriter and musician more than a little ." Fortunately for us, the melodies do not dry up ," says Daniel Cavanagh . "We are not too conscious writer . We are people who can satisfy us of music and always try her go a little out of the way . The issue is just as much about going out of the way as to take control of the music. "As a brilliant collection of beautiful songs , active, artistically and passionately presented , emphasizes " distant satellites " once more the talent of the brothers Cavanagh along with drummer John Douglas." Distant satellites " is the highly anticipated sequel to 2012 's acclaimed anathemas he works Weather Systems and last year's , and stunning shot by Lasse Holie concert film Universal. Although they worked again with Christer -André Cederberg , not to mention Steven Wilson, the mixte two songs , and Dave Stewart ( Porcupine Tree , Steven Wilson) , who was responsible for the extraordinary orchestral arrangements of the new album ; the basic feeling of " distant satellites " but is much more reserved , like Danny Cavanagh says."The album is deliberately kept pure . We thought it proper to reduce the various elements and keep them only when they really had to be there , "he says. " A little , as with Radiohead, Kid A made ' have so . , OK Computer ' was very dense and complex , and their return was then this naked album that was based on the vocals and everything but was stuffed . "This is supplemented by the wonderfully ethereal album artwork of the Korean new media artist Sang Yoo June ; it is based on his " Distant Light Installation" in New York.Already destined to be one of the most celebrated and cherished albums of the year , is " distant satellites " the work of a band whose collective love for music from year to year is stronger.

Album:

The box set includes the three remastered album "Judgement", "A fine day to exit", "A natural disaster" and the "Live in Krakow 2014 - Were you there?" DVD.If you owned any metal albums in the 90s (or 80s if you’re as old as me) then chances are you had a release on the Music For Nations label. MFN was a mark of quality, from the undisputed brilliance of Metallica’s Master Of Puppets to the genre-advancing experimentalism of Opeth’s Blackwater Park and Deliverance/Damnation; from the unholy trinity of gothic metal (Paradise Lost, Cradle of Filth and My Dying Bride) to the nascent prog resurgence of Amplifier’s debut and the three Anathema releases included in this new box. After making their mark as purveyors of doom metal, Anathema’s strong Pink Floyd influence came ever more to the fore resulting in 1998’s Alternative 4. Pushing the atmospheric element already inherent in their music and easing off on the distortion, the Cavanagh brothers set sail on a sea of experimentation, which continues to this day and has seen them garner critical and commercial success including a UK Top 20 album for Distant Satellites. That voyage saw them stop off at these points in time – Judgement, A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster. For those who may be picking these albums up for the first time Judgement will be instantly recognisable as the Anathema of 2015 – all the hallmarks are there already. The opening quartet of songs flow as a mini-suite with no gaps. The picked acoustic guitar arpeggios shimmer, Vinnie Cavanagh’s baleful yet yearning vocals and a sense of barely-restrained emotional power culminates in the deeply personal ‘One Last Goodbye’ – a farewell to the Cavanaghs’ mother that first-time listeners will need to steel themselves for. ‘Parisienne Moonlight’ and ‘Don’t Look Too Far’ represent the debut of Lee Douglas who has since become an integral part of the band’s sound.A Fine Day To Exit from 2001 saw the band refine their style, moving ever further from the crashing power chords and into more sophisticated prog rock territory and more canny use of vocal harmonies. The remaster comes with a re-sequencing of the track order and an additional song. The instrumental ‘A Fine Day’ now begins the album and serves as a prelude to the Floydian ‘Release’. The moment when that song’s bass synth kicks in is perhaps the greatest step forward in Anathema’s career. It marks the watershed between their metal past and their embracing of electronica. They can still rock hard as ‘Panic’ will testify although it does come across as a hangover from the old days, which contrasts unfavourably with the likes of the title track and the majestic Oceansize-like ‘Breaking Down the Barriers’.The inexorable march of progress continues with ‘Harmonium’ which opens 2003’s A Natural Disaster. String synths, E-Bow guitar swells and programmed drums form a backdrop for Vinnie’s most naked vocal yet until a squall of feedback announces a plodding doom-like rhythm. This is most definitely an act that has grown organically over their career, honing their sound from the same amorphous mass of material.Electronica becomes more prominent than ever with the stunning live favourite ’Closer’. It writhes, dangerous and erotic like Yeats’ rough beast. It has a cosmic ambience that recalls the unhinged mid-section of electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream’s 1978 Bent Cold Sidewalk. Vincent’s vocoder is given an extra spectral dimension, more harmonic detail has been brought out by the remaster. The title track is a live staple to this day, a spotlight for the soulful voice of Lee Douglas and a pointer to her more prominent role in the band’s future. ‘Violence’, with its driving percussion and wall of noise, predicts the unalloyed passion that is the live version of ‘Distant Satellites’ but highlights the subtlety Anathema have nurtured in the intervening years. It was to be seven years between A Natural Disaster and their stellar return in 2010.These three albums have been remastered under the supervision of Danny Cavanagh. The audio has a wider stereo image, the added space is most noticeable via headphones. There is greater detail overall and added warmth, which compensates for the slightly tinny sound of the original mixes. Let’s face it, these are not seminal audiophile recordings (compare them to the Steven Wilson mix of We’re Here Because We’re Here and they are found wanting) but they do benefit from the polish-up.The bottom line is if you know these albums then the sonic upgrade is worthy of your hard-earned cash. Listen through good headphones and enjoy them as never before. If you came to Anathema via their last three albums then this box is the next logical step in your journey. We’re Here Because We’re Here did not magically appear out of nowhere but was a huge artistically successful step forward in the organic growth of one of the most visionary, hard-working and passionate bands the UK has produced in decades.

Album:

ANATHEMA have peaked their career in music with the release of “Universal”, a live album recorded at the ancient theatre of Philippopolis in Plovdiv, Bulgaria with the accompaniment of the PLOVDIV PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. Live albums either sound terrible or amazing and “Universal” tops the greater end, you actually feel like you're in the audience watching the band. The album begins with “Untouchable Part 1”, from the moment it begins you can already feel the atmosphere of the concert created by the orchestra. Vincent Cavanagh's voice is gentle but powerful, enhanced by Lee Douglas's backing vocals. You can feel the raw power as Vincent sings the lyrics “I had to let you go and find a way back home, I had to let you go to the setting sun”. In addition, the violin's attributed the song with a romantic but dramatic feel.”Untouchable Part 2” begins with a simple but effective piano composition. This track is a calm reply to ”Untouchable Part 1”, it feels fragile to listen too and much less dramatic. Though Vincent sing's on the track first it is Lee Douglas's vocals that give the track it's edge, her vocal range is what makes this track special and shouldn't be performed any other way. There are any three things what really stand out in 'Thin Air': The keyboards, the guitars and drums. The vocals take a back seat here, though still amazing they are not as strong as the previous two tracks. The drums sound blunt but still loud, the guitar's riffs are melodic but the keyboards are the star in the song. The keyboard segment at 3.07 makes you feel like it's the middle of winter and the first snowflakes are falling on your head. The keyboards give it the special touch it needed.”Dreaming Light” is the weakest track on the album, though good it just lacks the lustre the other tracks had. The only thing that makes it good is the piano accompaniment, which makes it sound like it's from a Disney Soundtrack. Vincent's vocal range are at its peak here, just a shame how it could have been used on a better track. ”The Storm Before The Calm” title speaks for itself, the track is a storm and it's very haunting. The vocals are dramatic and hit with a hard punch at the best points, John Douglas's drums is in top shape, the bass playing of Jamie Cavanagh gives an underlying Jazz vibe. But that only describes half the track, halfway through the 9 minute song we are charmed with astonishing guitar solos and Vincent's vocals are put to the test.”Everything” shows how well Lee and Vincent can work together, both harmonising with the piano accompaniment. The fast but structured drumming gives a spark to one of the weakest songs of the album. The guitar playing is great but if it was in a lower tuning it would have sounded a lot better as it sounds too conflicting at times with the vocals.

Album:

After Anathema’s 2012 award-winning album "Weather Systems" and 2014’s spellbinding "Distant Satellites", the ambient rockers are back with their 11th full-length, "The Optimist". Due for release on June 9 through kscope, "The Optimist" will soon reveal some of the darkest, most challenging and unexpected music the sextet have put their name to.Anathema, led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and drummer/keyboardist Daniel Cardoso began recording "The Optimist" in the winter of 2016 at Attica Audio in Donegal, Ireland and then finished at Castle Of Doom Studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals) at the helm. Vincent elaborates on Doogan’s influence on the recording process: “He suggested that we record as a live band, which we hadn’t done for years. Having played a few tunes on the last tour, we were ready for that. Tony wanted to capture that energy you can only get with everyone facing each other… it makes a big difference. He was a superb guy to work with and I learned a lot making this record.”The idea for "The Optimist" was born from the front cover artwork of the band’s 2001 album "A Fine Day To Exit", Daniel Cavanagh explains: “I suppose you might say the album is semi-autobiographical, because this time we used a surrogate” of the character that is The Optimist. “We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative of The Optimist. It was John’s idea to write a narrative, so I took 'A Fine Day To Exit' as the starting point." Vincent elaborates further on the earlier album’s artwork influence: “The guy who disappeared – you never knew what happened to him, did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego – the last known location of The Optimist – shown on the cover of 'A Fine Day to Exit'."To continue the theme further, the band brought back designer and illustrator Travis Smith to create the artwork for "The Optimist". The artwork was created from a series of photographs Smith took on a West Coast road trip. With the character’s unresolved destiny the three song writing members, meticulously brought the unfinished story to an end – and most strikingly of all – one which is decided by the listener.
