Info:

The Pineapple Thief is a progressive rock band, started by Bruce Soord in 1999 in Somerset, England.Founder Bruce Soord started "The Pineapple Thief" as an outlet for his music back in 1999. Bruce released the debut Abducting the Unicorn on Cyclops records, which created enough interest to establish a small but loyal fan base. Soord returned to the Dining Room studios to work on the second album 137. During this time, several major labels started to take an interest, causing a delay in the release which arrived over two years after the debut. However it was probably the third album, Variations on a Dream that gave TPT the boost they needed, reaching out to yet more people all over the world, by which point TPT were consistently the top sellers on their label, Cyclops. After this release in the spring of 2002 Bruce decided to form a band to take his music to the fans. The band consisted of his close musical friends - former university band mate Jon Sykes on bass, Wayne Higgins on guitars, Matt O'Leary on keyboards and Keith Harrison on drums. As a full band, they released 12 Stories Down in 2004, but Bruce Soord was unhappy with the final sound and re-recorded, remixed and changed some of the tracks before the release of 10 Stories Down in 2005. Matt O'Leary subsequently left the band, but Steve Kitch (who co-produced and mixed 10 Stories Down) joined to play keyboards.Following the release of Little Man in 2006, the band released What We Have Sown in late 2007 as a final Cyclops release before being signed to Kscope, a division of Snapper Music.Wayne Higgins left the band in March 2008, but the group continued as a four piece live act, playing gigs across Europe, Canada and the USA throughout much of the following years. In May 2008, The Pineapple Thief launched the Kscope label with the critically acclaimed album, Tightly Unwound, which was marked by launch shows at Witchwood in Manchester on 17 May 2008 and at the Water Rats Theatre in London on 22 May 2008. The same day as the album's release, a mini-documentary filmed at The Half Moon, London, was released through the band's website, featuring interviews and two exclusive live tracks. This was followed in 2009 by The Dawn Raids EPs and 3000 Days, a 2CD re-mixed and re-mastered collection of songs from their ten-year history to date. In January 2010, their 2006 album, Little Man was also fully remixed by Bruce Soord and Steve Kitch and released through Kscope with new artwork. There are plans to gradually give all of their back catalogue the same treatment as the Cyclops albums are no longer available and sell for large sums in the second hand market. 2009 also saw them supporting Riverside on the UK leg of their European tour.Someone Here Is Missing was launched at a show at Bush Hall, London on 19 May 2010, whose attendees included Kscope labelmates Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and Daniel Cavanagh of Anathema. The album also features artwork by the legendary designer Storm Thorgerson, who is famous for creating some of the most recognisable artwork of the last 30 years including albums by Pink Floyd (The Dark Side Of The Moon, The Division Bell, Pulse), Muse, Led Zeppelin, Biffy Clyro and Dream Theater. The album continues to nurture the band's trademark ‘bittersweet’ progressive sound.2010 saw a number of European festival appearances and a full 2 week tour of mainland Europe. This was recorded and released as the download only album "Someone Here Is Live".The band entered the studio in January 2012 to record their ninth album, which included (for the first time) a 22 piece orchestra and choir. "All the Wars" was released in September 2012 and followed by a UK tour.On 8 February 2014 the band announced that Dan Osborne had replaced Keith Harrison on drums. The Pineapple Thief's tenth studio album, titled Magnolia was released on 15 September 2014. It peaked at number 55 on UK Album Chart. In August 2016 the band released the album Your Wilderness through Kscope.

Album:

After the worldwide acclaim generated by the 2014 anthemic rock release Magnolia, The Pineapple Thief returns with its most ambitious studio album to date, Your Wilderness on 12th August (19th August in France).Your Wilderness, their 11th studio album, showcases the band performing without any inhibitions providing a springboard for the ongoing creative growth of The Pineapple Thief. For the first time, The Pineapple Thief has brought in several special guest performers. “Since our last album Magnolia, the most eye catching change is obviously having Gavin Harrison contribute drums throughout the album” explains Bruce Soord. “This has not only redefined our sound but also redefined how we approached the songs as a band. Gavin’s drumming is technically brilliant but also incredibly musical, and it inspired all of us to raise our game. I’ve also rediscovered my progressive roots in terms of song-writing and arrangement. Added to that, we were lucky enough to have John Helliwell from Supertramp contribute some beautiful clarinet parts and Geoffrey Richardson (Caravan) provided a string quartet. We were also joined by a lovely 4 piece choir and to cap it all off, my friend Darran Charles (Godsticks) added some jaw dropping guitar playing… You’ve never heard a The Pineapple Thief album like this one! I am convinced people will love this record as much as we do.” Carl Glover’s thought provoking collection of photographs perfectly compliment the concept of the album, something which Soord is tight lipped about. “It should reveal itself to the listener and be open to interpretation. I don’t want what it means to me to influence how it affects you”. Your Wilderness was recorded entirely by the band with the exception of the drums, which Gavin Harrison produced & engineered at his own studio. The string quartet which was recorded at Geoffrey’s own studio in Canterbury. The album was mixed and produced by Bruce Soord and Steve Kitch with mastering duties also carried out by Steve. There will be a special lossless 5.1 surround mix available with the special edition mixed by Bruce.Seen as one of the most vital rock bands the UK has produced over the last two decades, The Pineapple Thief was formed in 1999 by founder and chief songwriter Bruce Soord. The band has steadily evolved and refined it’s sound with the bass playing of Jon Sykes and the production and keyboards of Steve Kitch now so integral to the sound. “After so many years, The Pineapple Thief has become way bigger than the sum of its parts.” explains Soord.“The new album was a joy to make. More so than any other The Pineapple Thief album before it. Everything came together so effortlessly and I think this comes across when you hear the record.”Bruce Soord has also collaborated with the likes of Wisdom of Crowds (with Katatonia’s Jonas Renkse), Katatonia (joining the band on its 2014 acoustic European tour), and has created 5.1 remixes for artists such as Opeth, TesseracT, Tim Bowness and Katatonia. Soord also released his debut self titled debut solo album through Kscope in 2015.The Pineapple Thief is currently booking a European tour for late 2016 and planning live shows in USA / CanadaYour Wilderness will be released by Kscope on CD, LP, digitally and as a special deluxe 12” hardback book.

Album:

Since Y2K, the standard of contemporary progressive rock albums being made keeps reaching new heights with a handful of bands leading the way in their pursuit of artistic excellence. English outfit The Pineapple Thief is a band well and truly ingrained in the 21st century, creating art rock music resembling a lineage of the juggernaut English bands that made rock music history in the 60’s 70’s and 90’s.The band’s 12th studio album ‘Dissolution’ will be coming out August 31st and sees King Crimson and Porcupine Tree’s drummer Gavin Harrison return for his 2nd appearance on a Pineapple Thief release. Harrison’s drumming enhances the band’s overall quality and it seems likely that he could well become a full time member in the line-up.The title ‘Dissolution’ stems from front man Bruce Soord’s very prevailing reflection on the fragmentation of modern relationships and trying to disconnect from the delusion of being connected to others through social media and technology. After a few listens it is clear the album delivers in its songwriting, the first single “Far Below” demonstrates the band’s catchy hooks as well as a desire to incorporate jazz keyboards and be truly progressive. Many of the compositions do not over stretch in length with the exception of “White Mist”, an 11-minute opus with an atmospheric tone, melancholic lyrics and singing alongside some metal guitar strutting. Soord’s sings emotionally “when did you lose control” as the band locks in with their tight musicianship, if you’re a Porcupine Tree fan you might appreciate in “White Mist” some of the sentiments of a song like “Anesthetize”. Other notable songs are “Uncovering Your Tracks” with its haunting background horn and its excellent guitar playing. ‘Dissolution’ balances acoustic folk fragileness with electric guitar rock prowess, it only falls short in sounding at times too much like one of Steven Wilson’s bands particularly with songs like “Try As I Might” and “All That You’ve Got”.This is an album that has all the familiar traits of a classic conceptual rock album with a nice piano intro, a short acoustic ballad interlude and an epic composition as a closure. 9 songs in total make it a relatively short album but it’s worth giving it a few spins as it grows on you the more times you listen. In contemporary music The Pineapple Thief lives comfortably somewhere between Metal Hammer devotees and NME indie rock hipsters.‘Dissolution’ will be a great addition to The Pineapple Thief’s catalogue; its modern with a slight nod to the great classic rock bands without ever trying to emulate them. In the last decade the term art rock has become a broad church of bands but if you think rock with an artistic vision and social commentary is dead then may I suggest you try giving this album a go, you won’t be disappointed!

Line-Up:

Bruce Soord / electric, acoustic & baritone guitars, vocals, synth
Steve Kitch / piano, synth, mellotron, Hammond, strings, electronic drums & percussion
Jon Sykes / bass

With:

Gavin Harrison (King Crimson / Porcupine Tree) / drums & percussion

05. All That You've Got (3:27)

Album:

TPT returns with 8 new remarkable tracks. An epic sonic adventure, recorded between September 2020 and July 2023, "It Leads To This" delivers a seductively cinematic experience. Conceptually, the album represents band leader Bruce Soord's efforts to better understand himself and the world around him during a time of global uncertainty.Opening with the coy melodies of "Put It Right" before moving into the metallic groove of "Rubicon", the album builds to the heart of the record with the epic title track, the cathartic "The Frost", followed by an introspective "All That's Left". The ominous "Now It's Yours" and "Every Trace Of Us" keep the foreboding atmosphere topped up whilst delivering The Pineapple Thief's signature dynamism, closing the record with the haunting "To Forget".One of the leading lights in Europe's experimental rock domain, The Pineapple Thief was formed in 1999 by founder and chief songwriter Bruce Soord. "It Leads To This" is the band's 14th studio album. The line-up has remained solid since 2016's game-changing "Your Wilderness": Bruce Soord (guitar/vocals), Jon Sykes (bass/backing vocals), Gavin Harrison (drums/percussion) and Steve Kitch (keyboards). "Your Wilderness" made the UK Album Chart Top 75 with 2018 follow-up "Dissolution" peaking at #36, alongside #1 UK Rock and Metal, #22 German album chart and #4 Netherlands Platomania album chart.

Line-Up:
