Bio:

Subsignal is a progressive rock band. The band was originally formed as a side project by Sieges Even members Arno Menses (vocals) and Markus Steffen (guitars). After their main band disbanded, Menses and Steffen recruited former Dreamscape members Ralf Schwager (bass), David Bertok (keyboards) and Sun Caged drummer Roel van Helden to complete the line-up.Originally intended as a side-project, Subsignal were founded back in 2007 by former Sieges Even members Arno Menses (Vocals) and Markus Steffen (Guitars). The first result of this collaboration was a song called ‘A Wallflower On The Day Of Saint Juliana’ which eventually appeared under the title ‘Eyes Wide Open’ on the 2007-Sieges Even-output ‘Paramount’. After Arno and Markus had left the band in the summer of 2008, they immediately started to look for adequate musicians to turn the project into a functional ‘real’ band. The first to join was Ralf Schwager (Bass), who was known for his work with German progmetal outfit Dreamscape. The line-up was completed by the Dutch drummer Roel van Helden (Sun Caged) and keyboarder David Bertok (also Dreamscape).Subsignal define their style as progressive, with an openness to different genres such as AOR, Metal, Pop etc. Arno and Markus describe the music with words like ’melancholic’, ‘emotional’, ‘innovative’ and ‘melodic’. They are aiming to catch up were Sieges Even stopped, but with a stronger focus on the live performances and a greater openness to other musical directions.Subsignal recorded their highly acclaimed debut album ‘Beautiful & Monstrous’ in Spring 2008. The CD was co-produced by Kristian Kohlmannslehner who was also responsible for Sieges Even’s 2007 output ‘Paramount’. The album ‘Beautiful & Monstrous’ has been released worldwide on September 25, 2009 through Golden Core/Zyx Records. (UK Release on 22 February 2010 via Cargo / US Release on 22 February 2010 via Koch Records).Subsignal played their first official show at the 2009 edition of the famous ‘Night Of The Prog Festival’ at the Loreley in Germany followed by several headliner shows and some concerts in support of the German Krautrock-Legend ‘Jane’ in Autumn 2009. In Spring 2010 Subsignal embarked on the second leg of their ‘Beautiful & Monstrous’-tour, supporting the Canadian progrock stars ‘-SAGA’ and doing several solo concerts in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy as well. The successful tour ended in Fall 2010 with a show at the German H.E.A.T.-Festival.In Spring 2011 the band started with the recordings for their second album entitled ‘Touchstones’. This time the band followed a different recording concept: Drums were done – once again – by Kristian Kohlmannslehner, while guitars and bass were recorded by Kalle Wallner (known for his work with RPWL and Blind Ego). Vocal recordings were done by Charly Czajkowski , who is the front-of-house-engineer of Subsignal. ‘Touchstones’ was mxed and mastered by Kristian Kohlmannslehner. In the week of its release ‚Touchstones‘ entered the official German Charts at position 53.After the release of ‚Touchstones‘ the band embarked on an European tour with celebrates shows such as at the 2011-edition of the Progpower Europe Festival. In May 2012 Subsignal filmed a show of the tour and released their first DVD called ‚Out There Must Be Something – Live in Mannheim 2012‘ via ZYX Records in Fall 2012.In February 2013 Subsignal entered the studio to record the third album entitled ‚Paraíso‘. This time the CD was produced by guitarist Markus Steffen, Arno Menses and Subsignal‘s FoH, Charly Czajkowski. ‚Paraíso‘ contains 10 songs with a full playing time of approx. 60 minutes. The song ‚The Blueprint of a Winter‘ features the Mexican vocal diva Marcela Bovio. She is well-known for her work with Stream of Passion and Arjen Lucassen’s Ayreon. Three tracks of the album featured string quartets which were recorded in Los Angeles, USA. The special edition of ‘Paraíso’ will contained a live recording of the band’s 2012 performance in Mannheim, Germany. `Paraíso`entered the German charts just like its predecessor ‘Touchstones’.After the release of ‘Paraíso` Subsignal played yet another successful European tour (with an appearance at the famous Rock of Ages-Festival in Germany). And in May 2014 the band played their first USA-show at the Rites-of-Spring-Festival in Gettysburg (PA).After returning from the ‚Paraíso‘-tour, Subsignal parted company with drummer Danilo Batdorf and keyboard player David Bertok. Arno Menses and Markus Steffen immediately began writing new material for the fourth album ‚The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime‘.After one year of intensive song writing, the album was produced by Markus Steffen, Arno Menses and Charly Czajkowski in Spring 2015. Keyboards were recorded by Luca Di Gennaro (Soul Secret), drums by Dirk Brand (Axxis, Geoff Downes & John Wetton). The album has a full length of about 70 minutes (with its title track clocking in at over 20 minutes), exploring an emotional depth that is new to Subsignal. Even if ‚The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime‘ is not a typical concept work, there are certain musical themes that reappear throughout the album. The lyrics deal with subjects such as loss, parting or unexpected incidents that cannot be controlled. Commented guitarist Markus Steffen:„‚The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime‘ is certainly our most emotional and intense album. I went through some not so enjoyable things the last two years, and I guess some of that stuff went directly into our song writing. But on the other hand, ‚Beacons‘ was pretty easy to write, and it is probably a Subsignal album that is very close to what Arno and I did in Sieges Even some years ago.“‚The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime‘ will be in stores October 30th, 2015 via Golden Core/Zyx Records in different formats. The special edition contains a bonus song, as well as audio comments by Arno and Markus to each song.

Album:

Subsignal are one of my favorite bands to come along in the past half-decade or so, arising from the dissolve of Sieges Even, who played a slightly more metalized, less keyboard-oriented version of what Subsignal has been doing. Their debut album was promising, and their sophomore effort Touchstones (2011) was an outstanding slab of modern progressive rock. I was really hoping Paraiso would set the bar even higher and bring the band more exposure.Sadly, I can't say Paraiso is quite as good as Touchstones, but nevertheless, it still manages to be an enjoyable release, worth the time and interest of any fan of the genre. The album opens strong with its title track, which has an infectious chorus and a great lyrical message. The next couple of tracks are all quality, including "A New Reliance", which features an unexpected ska-influenced section that works much better than I would've anticipated. "A Long Way Since the Earth Crashed" has all of the makings of a Subsignal classic, with the band showcasing their somewhat Peter Gabriel-influenced sound with a great mellow vibe. The melodies are moving, and overall the song is just simply beautiful. The band truly excels at writing this sort of stuff, no question about it.Unfortunately, by about the half-way point, there seems to be a drop-off in quality and energy. "The Stillness Beneath the Snow" and "The Blueprint of a Winter" both failed to grab me, and overall the band sort of treads water in a bit of a lull. I don't necessarily expect this sort of music to be particularly uptempo and energetic, but when its not, I prefer it to take on a particular vibe (as heard on "A Long Way Since..." and tracks like "The Sea" or "I Go With the Wind" from their debut album). The band finds their way back to their niche a little more with the closing two tracks, which salvage the back half of the album.Overall, Paraiso lacks a bit of the energy and memorable elements that made Touchstones such a fantastic album. If you're already a fan of Subsignal, you are certainly going to want to pick up and listen to this album, since when it shines, it truly does. However, if you're new to the band and thinking about giving them a shot, I would definitely recommend starting with this album's near-flawless predecessor.

Album:

This autumn seems to become a sophisticated season when it comes to progressive metal music. There have been already some quite exciting records that have been published; like the new album from Gazpacho and now there are two German prog bands coming with new albums too. Next to Vanden Plas it is Subsignal that offers a new journey through the world of sound."The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime" is the cryptic title of the new long player which is the forth one of the the band that arose out of the ashes of Siege Even. Brain and soul behind the band are guitarist Markus Steffens and singer Arno Menses who started Subsignal as a project in 2007. Things developed very positively and what began as a project became a fix part of the German prog metal scene."The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime" isn't build on a conceptual storyline. But there is a red thread through the various tracks on this long player. The overarching theme is about loss and parting. When it comes to the music Subsignal became harder again. The predecessor "Paraiso" was in general a bit softer with some tracks that have been close to AOR. The new album brings back heavier riffs. "Tempest" is a first indicator for this, underlined by songs like "Everything is Lost".But in the end it's not about heavier or softer when it comes to Subsignal's music. It's the band's lambent way of composing great songs that come with big melodies merged with a lot of emotional depth and thoughtfulness. "The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime" is full of those attributes and it's the passion for details, that makes Subsignal's sound complex as well as approachable also for non-musicians.This long player is the soundtrack for an exciting journey through eleven new tracks from a band that combines technical capabilities with an outstanding sense for good songs. "The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime" belongs to the highlights of 2015 and I would be surprised not finding back the album in some of the 2015 polls.

Album:

Originally intended as a side-project, SUBSIGNAL were founded back in 2007 by former SIEGES EVEN members Arno Menses (Vocals) and Markus Steffen (Guitars). To date, the band has released four studio albums, the latest a full-blown concept album at over 70 minutes in length. On May 25, 2018, they will release their fifth, titled “La Muerta,” which contains eleven new tracks.“271 Days” is a short opening track, with brief spoken words in Spanish, leading into the title track “La Muerta.” It opens softly and with melodic lead guitar in legato style. The sound is an amalgam of AOR and Prog Rock, and what a beautiful combination this is. It’s really unlike anything that I have heard before. They drive home a wonderful chorus where the vocal harmonies are on full display. I feel alive and moved in a way that I haven’t felt for a while. “Bells” has an upbeat and jovial melody, and delivers another memorable chorus that will give you goosebumps and a permanent smile on your face that nothing could erase. “Every Able Hand” opens with a dazzling keyboard melody. It has a bit of a more suspenseful and pensive sound, straddling the line between dark and light, with a very Alex Lifeson-esque guitar solo.“Teardrops” is a brief acoustic guitar song. As the notes are gently plucked, they do indeed sound like tears dropping to the ground. It is absolutely gorgeous in the small amount of time that it occupies your attention. “Approaches” reminds of the Progressive giants RUSH, in some of their more introspective work. Expertly crafted melodies trigger an array of emotions to the listener. At the very core of what music is and does as an art form, this is it. Breathtakingly beautiful, like a cool breeze on a warm summer day without a cloud in sight, it leaves a lasting impression long after it passes. “Stars Don’t Shine” has a funky little melody from the keyboards, and some subdued vocals at first that seem to come from within your consciousness, before the main riff hits. An easily enjoyable song, it tends to lift your worries and leave them behind.“Passages” is the long song in the album, and really gives the band a chance to showcase both their ability to bring a diverse mix of elements into a song. Critics of Progressive music often site the tendency to meander a bit in longer songs, with a focus on technical elements over melodic ones. That is not the case here. This song delivers an arena worthy performance with all of the expert craft of a band like TOTO. Piano and keys are used liberally along with expressive vocals that don’t overpower the exalted melodies. “Trains” opens with acoustic and clean electric guitars, leading to a smooth, mellow and thoughtful sound, giving you pause to reflect. “As Birds” has a stellar AOR sound with a hefty, full richness that melts your cares away. The vocal harmonies shine brightly and its charms are irresistible…especially that tasty guitar solo. “Drowining” closes the album. Despondent piano notes and emotional vocals mark a real melancholy sadness. Guest female vocals create a duet of lost love. Here at Metal Temple, we cover everything from Glam to Hard Rock, to AOR and the deepest and heaviest of Death Metal and Grindcore. Disclaimer: SUBSIGNAL’s “La Muerta” is not a Metal album. What it is, however, is an album that you never want to end and won’t soon forget. Substance. Actualization. Character. Class. Style. These are but a few words that I can share to somewhat adequately sum up this remarkable and extraordinary album. Expertly melding the shining elements of AOR with the artistry and finesse of Progressive music, it’s easily accessible enough to be played on mainstream radio, but would be wasted on an audience of mostly undiscerning listeners who would miss all the wonderful nuances and subtleties that it has to offer. In a veritable sea of bands in the world of Rock music today, SUBSIGNAL’s “La Muerta” stands head and shoulders above with integrity, constitution, and talent.

Album:

Munich-based German/Dutch prog rock quintet SUBSIGNAL are back with their new album, ”A Poetry Of Rain”, to be released on Gentle Art Of Music / Soulfood on September 22. The band’s sixth LP is also their first in five years, and sees the arrival of a new bass player, Dutchman Martijn Horsten.“That again had to do with the pandemic,” guitarist Markus Steffen explains for the delay between albums. “Existential anxieties crept in. As a result, long-time bassist Ralf Schwager left the band. With Martijn from Rotterdam, however, a worthy replacement was quickly found. Nevertheless, the ten songs are full of longing and a good portion of melancholy. This is a quite different album from previous SUBSIGNAL works, a band that always delivers interesting atmospheres, delicate melodies, and a crystal clear production / sound.Deep down, the album title pursues a poetic aspiration. But nostalgia also plays a decisive role. With ”A Poetry Of Rain” the band pursue the ‘cultivation of sadness’, just like the poets during the Renaissance, without ever falling into bottomless gloom.SUBSIGNAL now seems to be focusing on extremely melodic compositions with touches of technical prowess, delving further into a pop-oriented sound, at places bordering AOR. All are enjoyable and melodic, and you might find a couple of catchy tunes. As usual with the band, the performances are wonderful. Vocalist Arno Menses sounds amazing, like always, and I’m glad they don’t duplicate his voice anymore, he feels more natural here. Markus Steffen’s guitars are wickedly good and I love how off kilter and stabbing the licks can be. Markus Maichel keys / synths are essential part of SUBSIGNAL as they present us with what we consider to be the iconic Subsignal sound and atmosphere.”A Poetry Of Rain” is another strong offering from SUBSIGNAL. Originally, especially their first two albums were much more fiery, energetic prog with busy arrangements, now the group balance things with mature melodies, an earthy approach.SUBSIGNAL does no follow trends, the band make the music they hear in their heads: they need to follow their inspiration.
