Bio:

MYRATH (meaning "Legacy") is a Metal band from France and Tunisia, a small country well known for its resort areas on the Mediterranean coast but certainly not for its Metal bands, yet in just few years what started out as a teenage cover band, has became a relatively well known and respected band by the international Metal community. The first two years playing numerous area shows, mainly Death Metal covers, next two years exclusively SYMPHONY X covers.Early 2005 creating and releasing independently "Double Face", a self produced fan EP.Early 2006 the band got an opportunity to open for ROBERT PLANT and ADAGIO playing for over 7OOO rabid music fans and meeting their future producer Adagio’s keyboard player Kevin Codfert. With the valuable support of Kevin, MYRATH immediately recorded their first real album "Hope”, the band was signed by the French label Brennus-Music and “Hope” was released in 2007 to France being received very well by critics that predicted a bright future for the band and led to a number of high profile festival performances in Europe.Their follow up album "Desert Call" released early 2010 by French label XIII BIS RECORDS (Sony distribution) and in the rest of the world by the prestigious American Label Nightmare Records (Sony/Red/MRI) was a second turning point in MYRATH carrier in terms of improved notoriety and increasing their fan base, garnering an even wider interest of media and promoters. "Desert Call" offered a new style of Progressive Power Metal consisting of a mix between traditional Tunisian music and Metal enhanced by a balanced Arabian and western was received exceptionally well by critics putting the band on yet another level.Third MYRATH album "Tales Of the Sands" was released in late 2011, dubbing their new sound as “Oriental Metal” the band was again launched into even higher status, with sales and opportunities growing finding themselves on opening touring slots with major artists DREAM THEATER, HIM, WASP, ORPHAND LAND, TARJA and touring around the world (United Arab Emirates, USA, India, France, Spain, Morocco…) over a few years with many high profile festival performances, the band also made their first live appearance on US soil at ProgPowerUSA the premier progressive metal festival in 2013, and headlining ProgPowerEU in Netherlands to raving fans.Their new album “Legacy” promises to rocket the band even higher! Myrath have already secured medium slot on the new SYMPHONY X tour in Europe for early 2016, and will secure a major tour for North America, Asia and the Middle East shortly.

Album:

Oriental metal….Middle Eastern folk metal…Arabic symphonic metal…Aladdin power metal – whatever you want to call it, there are but only a few machinations of progressive metal that can instantaneously pique my interest. Only one of them stands tall among them all – this one. Myrath blew the doors off the subgenre back in 2011 with “Tales of the Sands” and ever since there has been an agonizing and painful wait for new material. The hype has never been more real when the band unleashed the brilliant new video and introduced the world to “Believer.” The year is young, but the only thing that can possibly top “Legacy” in 2016 is a new Orphaned Land album. There is a true beauty to those North African desert sands. The thing about sand – it gets into just about anything...leaving "Legacy" filled with fine grains of culture and artistic wonder. Take those Arabic influences and blend them into a heavier style of music and you will reveal the true beauty and power of heavy metal. It’s no secret that blending any style of music with metal will make it instantly better. Metal provides the added punch and conversely is given depth of style and culture by its adjunct. Myrath is a master of the craft and “Legacy” will be the band’s defining and enduring moment.Songs that are heavily influenced by the band members’ personal culture represent the highlights of any Myrath album. Here it’s the wide open powerful “Believer,” the very danceable and jumpy “Get Your Freedom Back,” the mid-paced almost prayer like “Nobody Lives,” and the daedal workings of “Duat.” The use of violins is remarkable throughout, intermixed with Elyes Bouchoucha’s masterful and unique keyboard work. Add the powerful Zaher Zorgati, who adds complex rhythmic structures and tense tones with his vocals (check out 3:28-3:58 of “Nobody Lives”). There are standout performances by all involved, including the brilliant bass play of Anis Jouini, who is as distinct as any of the greats (check out his work at 2:00 on “Get Your Freedom Back”).One of the best features of “Legacy” is the way Myrath keeps true to Middle Eastern tradition with baroque sophisticated build up right into a stunning tarab with the chorus. The style is insurmountable and has the very daunting effect of being too good – leaving the listener agape and a bit hopeless in the face of its labyrinthine intensity. Perfect example is in “Endure the Silence” – a track that features all the finest ingredients Myrath has to offer. While much of the focus lies on the orchestration and oriental nature of “Legacy,” it’s easy to overlook the deceptive heaviness underlying it all. Riding beneath the waves of tangled elegance are the riffs and striking solos of Malek Ben Ariba. Check out “The Needle” and “Storm of Lies” – two of the album’s heaviest and best. Even within the punchy positive “Get Your Freedom Back” lies a covert fat riff. Songwriting is key here; the blueprint high on melody and low on boredom.Myrath has truly crafted something exceptional and the style is something I hope will stay composed by a select and unique few (Orphaned Land, Amadeus Awad and Amaseffer come to mind). An explosion of like acts will only serve to water down its value and stunning impact on the listener. “Legacy” is masterful in weaving the technical with cultural influences of the band and the production (handled by Adagio keyboardist Kevin Codfert) is top notch. Myrath has raised the bar and it’s going to be very interesting if anyone can catch up.

Album:

It’s not fun anymore to say “holy f*%, look at this obscure prog/power band that came out of Tunisia from all places! They’re awesome”, because well, Myrath is now a well-known act and have a shiny new deal with EarMUSIC, so everyone at least heard of them by now. For those who haven’t, think of Orphaned Land-meets-Circus Maximus with a Northern African folk vibe, and you’ll know exactly what to expect from the band and ‘Shehili’, their fifth full-length album. This time around, though, the Ez-Zahra natives try to blend even more of their native colors, sounds and atmosphere into the prog-oriented power metal already characteristic to them – approach that was already very prominent in the good ‘Legacy’ (2016). Similarly, the band takes the poppy, cheesy vibe seen in their last entry to a whole new level, making me doubt more times than not while listening to this if my music player had changed from the good ol’ metal to a Eurovision best-of Ajerbaizan video. Nevertheless, the product here is an interesting one. These pop-ish, TV show moments are – and forgive me Odin, Quorthon, Mark Shelton and all the metal gods – actually what makes this album so catchy and…oh god, fun (Chuck Schuldiner slaps me in the face for my insubordination). The initial “Born to Survive”, for instance, illustrates this quite well by mixing the already tried-and-true prog/power formula with this folky, poppy envision of Tunisian music. However, the song borrows much from Myrath’s past glories such as “Merciless Times” and “Forever and a Day”.“You’ve Lost Yourself” follows the same path and features some of the best riffs in the record. The sexy atmosphere intertwines with the somber, burdened vocal lines by Zaher Zorgati (aka Prince from the Prince of Persia franchise) and forms a heavy, dark tune worthy of being featured side by side with the likes of ‘Desert Call’ (2010) and ‘Tales of the Sands’ (2011).It’s not until “Dance” that they go full bonkers in terms of shamelessly abandoning heaviness in favor of catchiness and sugary singalong magnitude. I dare you not to move your head while listening to this, as it rivals pompous, radio-friendly metal that only the likes of current Avantasia or Battle Beast are used to do. Unlike those two, though, “Dance” doesn’t make me want to kill myself when listening to it.“Wicked Dice” and “Monster in My Closet” take down a few notches of cheesiness and bet once again in more mixed parts between accessible and progressive, especially in the keyboard and bass lines, which sound more prolific. The modern guitar tuning also does a good job of turning things to a more potent side.Myrath continues playing with the main elements of their choice from here on, but there are moments that even alien ingredients such as AOR come in place, like in the decent “Lili Twil”. Nevertheless, the main course is still the symphonic, epic atmosphere, and tracks like “No Holding Back” do this job wonderfully. One of the best songs here, it could easily serve as an epitome of what Myrath means today with their consolidated sound. The final portion of the album doesn’t quite match the quality of the first one, mainly because the band inexplicably leaves out much of the punch and power aside and bet on melodic, emotional songs. “Stardust” and “Mersal”, for example, have nice parts but seem to be missing something, while “Darkness Arise” relies too much on modernity for its own sake. The title track closes the effort and is the most different song here, being heavily constructed to favor the Arabian orchestrated atmosphere, so there’s not much here in terms of metal. It seems to me that Myrath is at its strongest moment regarding songwriting and instrumentality. ‘Shehili’ is smooth, well-produced and well-written, besides being a ton of fun to listen to. It’s a step back when compared to ‘Legacy’, true, and definitely different than what pleases me as a prog/power act – which are their first three albums, but all in all, if you like your metal driven, majestic and catchy, this will definitely fits your taste, as Myrath does this better than most out there. Recommended.

Album:

If there is an original, interesting band in the current metal / progressive field, that should be MYRATH. Usually keen on inventive, fiery and magical, their albums are always refreshing different. So few bands will dare wear their roots on their sleeve not just in regards to the bands they grew up loving, but also the music of their own culture. Among them we find Myrath, a group that has been carving it’s way through the last two decades blending progressive metal with Oriental melodies. And with the upcoming new work titled “Karma“, they have created a fascinating collection of songs, awesomely arranged to perfection, and with top notch, clean powerful production sound. Sometimes they add a commercial, poppy touch to make things more appealing. The new album will be released next Friday, just a day before the band’s show at the prestigious ProgPower Festival in Atlanta, USA.Myrath is a band loaded with talent, rendering the production to not much more than a fly in the ointment. But that fly still draws attention away from the instrumental tapestry. The focus narrows in on Malek Ben Arbia’s stellar shredding keyboard orchestrations. Both the keys and guitars offer context to and bolster Zaher Zorgati’s dynamic vocals. Zaher is Karma’s star without a doubt. While the production guarantees this, his vocals would shine without it. The vocals balance between Jasper Steverlinck’s (Guilt Machine) purity and poppy poise and early Russel Allen’s range and growl. Zaher, however, throws in an extra twist by blending in traditional vocal inflections which really define Myrath’s unique sound.Taken as a whole, “Karma” is an album that sets a high bar for Myrath. It’s slick, well-written, fun to listen to, and laced with awesome performances. This is not only for progressive metal fans, but a wide range of listeners, including melodic rockers.
