Bio:

Teramaze bring only what can be described as an utterly unique sense of style to the world of metal. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the band’s blend of progressive, melodic and thrash metal has attracted an underground following within local bars and small venues. The band has been polishing their album “AnhedoniA” off since it’s production begun in 2009, as well as performing at various venues within Australia. In terms of style, Teramaze say that they’re influenced primarily by bands such as Dream Theater, Tool and Pantera. With bone crushing riffs, soaring vocals, and a solid rhythm section, the band’s sense of rhythm and feel is evident within their technical, yet tasteful music. The sound of the band is made up of five unique individuals. Vocalist, Brett Rerekura cites Layne Stayley, Devin Townsend, Sebastian Bach and Maynard James Keenan as his main influences. The powerful vocals that he provides to the overall sound of Teramaze is a key element to their sheer power as a melodic, yet heavy band. Guitarist, Dean Wells is greatly influenced by guitarists such as John Petrucci, Marco Sfogli, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, as is shown by his unique soloing styles, as well as the band’s riffs that compliment the sonic power of guitarist Mathew Dawson. The late Julian Percy provided drums for the album, and his unique style of “fusion hands” and “metal feet” adds to the sheer power of the album. The band are currently searching for a drummer, if you are interested, and dedicated as a musician. The album AnhedoniA is the third official release by the band, and is due in early 2012 for a worldwide release.

Album:

I’ll be totally honest here. Originally I had a nasty, bitter, hate-filled review all ready to go about how much this album sucked and how much I hated it. I was fully prepped to drop an acidic, written shit all over this album - but then I listened to it. Yes, even I can be wrong about my prejudices – who would have thought, eh?By that, I mean it’s good. Very good. Good enough to listen to again to pick up all the little musical morsels you miss the first time. I was legitimately impressed by this album, and the last time I was this impressed was my last vomit night on ten years ago. You should have seen the size of this vomit, it was easy a couple gallons of stomach slurry. I pity the poor son-of-a-bitch who had to mop up that monstrosity at the pizza hut it happened in. Sorry, lost my train of thought there, let’s discuss the music next. The guitar riffing is hard, heavy, biting, and yet crispy – good. As for the lead work, I can say I’m happy. Mindless shredding never gets me hard unless someone slips me a Viagra without my knowledge, and they don’t do that. Melodic lead work makes me smile greatly. Yay. As for the bass work, yet again we have the typical rock syndrome of not utilizing it to its full potential, and this is a note of aggravation I can’t seem to shake away. Goddamnit, the bass exists, whether you want it to or not. No album will ever get a perfect score without at least a bass solo. Call me a petty jerk and I’ll agree with you.Now it’s time for the little pieces of shit to make their presence known in our proverbial sandwich. They’re there, no matter what your taste buds tell you. And here it’s the vocals. I like then, usually. But every once in a while, the singer goes into a useless hardcore shout that I think is useless. The music doesn’t need it and it’s superfluously trying to add dramatic tension to a set piece that doesn’t need it, warrant it, or crave it. Don’t Do It. But he does. And that is a piece of shit. And who likes pieces of shit in their sandwich? As well, there is something else worth mentioning. This album actually did resonate with me quite well. Several hooks stayed with me, and I recall humming rhythms and melodies at work hours later. That’s good. That means the music must be doing something right. Good for them.My idea bin is running is a little dry at the moment, so let me end on this next paragraph. “Anhedonia”is a good album; good enough to warrant the price of admission. It has no flaws that kill the deal, nothing to sour the palette or destroy your hopes and dreams. I liked it. I may even do the unthinkable and listen to it again after this review.Oh, and there seems to be a Christian subtext present. Whether that’s just them trying to jump on the “songs about bible shit are epic” bandwagon, or their legitimate faith kicking in, fuck that. Just ignore it and enjoy the show. It’s a good show.

Album:

Sometimes you come across an album that is so downright impressive that it stretches you into liking a style that it outside of your norm. Estoteric Symbolism is one of those albums for me. While I’m admittedly a fan of metal in almost all its flavors, I’ve never been able to get into progressive metal that contains only melodic vocals. (It often reminds me too much of 80s ballads.) But this album is so well-executed musically that I nearly gave it a perfect score. There’s more to music than perfect performance, however, as I’ll discuss later. The most noticeable thing about this album is that it is a beast. Though my review copy did match the CD version (which includes one extra track), it clocks in at an hour and eighteen minutes. Only three of the songs are shorter than five minutes, and many are longer than seven. So if you’re looking for a fast and brutal metal fest, this is not for you. But if you’re seeking track after track of technicality that seems to never end, TERAMAZE has exactly what you’re looking for. That said, Esoteric Symbolism is far too long for a track-by-track dissection. Many of the songs share similar elements, and none is completely different from any of the others. That’s not to say they’re formulaic, though they do tend to blur into one another at times. Most all of them feature chugging guitars, thundering drums, precision solos, soaring harmonies, and a dash of synth. The band also opts not to stick with straightforward time signatures and predictable rhythms. Many of the riffs end on the off-beat, utilize distinctive scales, and exercise other progressive techniques to keep the listener on their toes. Dueling and harmonizing leads make numerous appearances, as well. Key and tempo changes are common, as one could expect of the rule-bending genre. Honestly, as track after track progresses, it’s easy to take the astonishingly articulate musicianship for granted. An album of this stature and quality is by no means easy to produce, no matter how veteran the band.Vocally, the performance is also flawless. Brett’s strong tenor cuts through each song, never once wavering. There isn’t a ton of diversity in delivery except for a few sections featuring more strained or emphatic lines. As mentioned earlier, the harmonies are also spot-on, another hallmark of the style. In my metalcore-influenced mind, the album would have been much stronger with a variety of screaming vocals thrown in (the only instance is on “Order Out of Chaos”), but I also understand that’s not what the band was going for. With regards to creating an album exemplary of progressive metal, TERAMAZE absolutely nails it.But that brings me to my only criticism of the album. With regards to lyrical content, I was expecting some deep philosophical questioning based upon the title. Instead, I found it hard to make sense of the vast majority of the songs. “Dust of the Martyrs” and “VII Darkest Days of Symphony” were the only two from which I could draw much meaning; many other times the lyrics were so vague that I had no idea what they could be alluding to. (It’s possible that I missed something and this was intentionally part of the concept of the album, but if not, it is quite ironic that the lyrics are, in fact, so esoteric.) This could also be a stylistic trademark of the genre with which I’m not well-acquainted. I understand the art involved in writing cryptically, and I also admit that I often prefer words which hold deep meaning but don’t require large stretches of interpretation. Perhaps others can glean more than I was able to, but as someone who enjoys beautifully-crafted lines as much as musical composition itself, the music did not connect for me at a heart level, impressive as it is.Overall: TERAMAZE is a powerhouse band of incredible musicians who deliver over and over again throughout the long duration of Esoteric Symbolism. Metal fans looking for sheer technicality and jaw-dropping solos will find a lot to love in this album, while those wanting brutal heaviness and clear, relatable lyrics may find it lacking in those areas. Either way, the talent and craftsmanship of TERAMAZE cannot be denied.

Album:

Australian progressive metal band Teramaze has announced the release of new album "I Wonder" on October 9, 2020 via Wells Music. To celebrate the announcement, a music video was released for the song “A Deep State Of Awake”, which was directed by the band.Lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Dean Wells states: "I Wonder is an album I’ve personally wanted to write for a very long time. Having Andrew, Chris and Nick in this chapter of Teramaze was the perfect formula to do so. I believe we achieved everything we set out to within this body of music. It’s the most emotional and honest I've been as a songwriter in my life and it’s been a great challenge. I’ve truly enjoyed the process of writing, singing and recording lead vocals as well. If you are a true Teramaze fan, then you are going to love this album!”With "I Wonder", the band has delivered yet another stunning piece of modern progressive metal. It will inevitably build upon the progress achieved by previous releases "Her Halo" and "Are We Soldiers".Teramaze was originally formed during lead guitarist/producer Dean Well’s teenage years. The band put out a couple albums in the early years, but it wasn’t until the release of "Anhedonia" in 2012 that Wells felt the modern version of Teramaze actually began. That third album was met with critical acclaim, as was the follow-up of 2014’s "Esoteric Symbolism", which saw the quartet making a bolder statement and taking no prisoners to flex their musical muscle even further. The albums "Her Halo" and "Are We Soldiers" both achieved success with the die hard fans and made several new ones in the process.

Album:

This is our 3rd album released in under 12 months and our 9th studio album as a band, we truly believe its one of our greatest yet and one that all teramaze fans old and new will really enjoy.Australia has recently gone through a bit of a rough year with multiple statewide lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, even though the band was rarely able to be in the same room together, the Aussie’s premier progressive rock band TERAMAZE were able to produce three full-length albums, the third of which – “And the Beauty They Perceive” – will be released on October 5th, 2021. Formed back in 1993 and fronted by band founder and guitarist Dean Wells, he is surrounded by a recent re-shaping of excellent musicians in Andrew Cameron on bass – who recently played with Wells in the progressive/thrash metal band MESHIAAK – as well as Chris Zoupa who has released a solo guitar album under the name SEVENTH DAN COUNTERFORCE in 2014, and finally, relative newcomer Nick Ross rounds out the lineup on drums. The band has made quite a name for themselves in the progressive metal/rock community over several years, with this latest release being their ninth full-length release since their first album “Doxology” in 1995.Though the band may have taken a break in the mid-2000s, TERAMAZE has been going strong since their 2012 album “Anhedonia” in which they became much more comfortable with a more focused song structure and shed all of their earlier thrash metal influences. This trend has continued, and the band has seemed to deliver a perfect package of structured and shorter yet still highly technical and progressive albums with 2014’s “Esoteric Symbolism”, 2015’s “Her Halo” and 2019’s “Are We Soldiers”. This recent trio of albums beginning with “I Wonder”, continuing with “Sorella Minor” and now finishing with “And the Beauty They Perceive” sees Wells as front man, taking on all lead vocal duties for the first time. The fans have embraced this shift in style after Brett Rerekura’s departure in 2019 and see Wells as a welcome face and sound for the current iteration of the band. After the “concept album rock opera” that was “Sorella Minor”, guitarist Chris Zoupa states that the band, “were absolutely drained from the undertaking of composing a 25-minute song” and the band instead switched gears with “And the Beauty They Perceive” and wrote nine killer tracks without an overall interconnected theme but still contain all the technicality, emotion, and catchiness that TERAMAZE is known for.Coming off of the momentous and grandiose second installment of their “Her Halo” saga with their previous album “Sorella Minore” just a couple of months ago, “And the Beauty Perceive” was met with a lot of expectation. TERAMAZE have certainly been prolific as of late and after two excellently received albums, I feel like this one is a bit more paint-by-the numbers for the band. It started out great with the explosive opening title track, beginning with a groovy, twisty-turny prog riff and even had a soft, dreamy synth section that was very 80s inspired. But the production issues were already apparent with the guitar leads seemingly buried by the monstrous production. Another stand-out is the first major epic track “Modern Living Space” - the title reminding me of RUSH – featuring a crazy dual-guitar lead that generously spreads itself out over a chuggy, djenty, heavily syncopated riff and some wonderful COHEED AND CAMBRIA-like vocal harmonies. While I am on the topic, I didn’t initially liken to Wells’ voice after taking over lead vocal duties two albums ago, but he has really grown into a poignant and introspective voice among the prog scene. The fragility and versatility of his voice really shows through on the power ballad-like “Waves” in which he is able to really lean into the vibrato and emotional warmth he carries, sounding very much like a young Freddie Mercury at times. I particularly love the palm-muted arpeggios that drive “Waves” as well. But by the latter three tracks, I felt the band were playing things a bit safe and the songs got a bit repetitive. Overall, it was a very safe album for TERAMAZE but at times, still exciting.

These albums were “I Wonder,” “Sorella Minore,” and “And The Beauty They Perceive,” all featuring Dean Wells as the band’s new lead vocalist. All three albums were embraced by fans, superfans and Prog Metal aficionados. Now in 2022, the band continues their prolific writing pace with the newest album, “Flight of the Wounded,” which contains nine songs. The title track is the first; a ten-minute opus. Heavy, aggressive elements are tempered with intelligent melodies. The harmonies in the guitar work in the beginning are wonderful. Where has Dean been all my life? He has the perfect voice for the music. The lead guitars are also very well done. “Gold” was the first single released ahead of the album. It has a smooth and mellow sound with some hooks and a very melodic chorus. It come up on you like a new sunrise…encompassing and magnanimous. “The Thieves Are Out” is the song I have been waiting for on the album. Short, sweet, but not without a core sense of power, the peaceful and glossy sound is full of keys and hooks, and the guitar solo is smoking.“Until the Lights” is a sad, soothing affair that has some firm resolve. Despair turns to anger in the chorus, as Dean stretches out into the upper ranges with backing vocals. He holds the notes with perfect pitch and drains them for everything they are worth. “Tickets to the Next Apocalypse” refers to the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe. The music is both harder and darker, but not without heavy hooks once again. The band rides the fence between feelings of outright despair at the dangers of the virus, but also the collective hope of the human race for overcoming it. Harsh vocals make an appearance here to further the despair, but in the end hope always wins. “For the Thrill” is a concise movement with an easy listening sound that has some power in it, especially in the vocals. The music has a good mixture of guitars and keys, along with vocal harmonies.“Dangerous Me” features a steadfast guitar riff with pleasant vocal harmonies. There are just enough Progressive elements to keep it planted within the genre, but it’s all about the vocals here. They soar into the clouds above. You can feel the notes on your skin…and they raise goosebumps. “Battle” is yet another winner, with heavy hooks out of the gates. It’s a balanced song that is ardent enough for Metalheads, yet melodic enough for fans who need that staple in their music. The vocal harmonies drip with sweetness. “In the Ruins of Angels” closes the album. It’s a fitting closer, with a balanced mix of the efficacy of heavy metal but enough hooks to keep you singing along. TERAMAZE do this so well.Four albums in two years is an amazing feat for any band to undertake. One thing that I noticed on this fourth release is that the band seems to have confined their songwriting efforts into more concise songs, rather than the lavish songs of yesteryear. Dare I say it’s more mature? Yes, but don’t mistake this with the band losing their footing in the genre. Indeed, if anything, it is just further evidence that they have developed into a real force in the Progressive Metal genre. Creating memorable hooks is, in my opinion, the hardest thing to do in any genre of music, and this collection of songs is full of them. Long live TERAMAZE.

Album:

Teramaze are an Australian trash metal, melodic metal, progressive rock band, fronted by guitarist and band founder Dean Wells, Chris Zoupa also on guitars, Andrew Cameron on bass, Nick Ross on drums, and vocalist Nathan Peachey (Trigger) who has collaborated with the band before and has been asked to rejoin permanently. Dalla Volta is their new upcoming album, a compilation of new songs, alternate versions of some classics, demo versions, and a cover. The album opens with the song “Navigate in Solitude”, a song that grabbed from the get-go, heavy and full of hooks, a great song from which I like everything, even the pseudo- growling, a perfect collision between trash and melodic metal, a clear blueprint for what Teramaze does, my favorite song by far.The band has released two singles in support of this output, one is an original and the other a cover… “Chaos in the Way” is the original song, pure melodic metal at its best, the riffing is hypnotic, and the vocal performance is outstanding, a great choice for a single. It is followed by the heavier and darker “These Crystal Walls”, well-crafted and executed, and even though the band isn’t doing anything different or new, is easy to slowly fall in love with their music, especially with the guitar tone and the drumming.“Shadows II” is, according to the band’s own words, a reimagined version of the classic “Shadows” from their 1998 album Tears to Dust, it sounds better and has been added a minute of music in the form of heavy melodic metal, giving also extra time for the guitars to shine. “The Heist” was a single released in 2019 but not included in any album until now, is a good and catchy song with a furious rhythmic section and equally frenetic keyboards, a little saturated for my taste, but an undeniable hit for the band.“Waves” and “Broken” are both piano versions of the original songs. Honestly these are not the type of songs I expect to hear when listening to a trash metal/melodic metal/progressive metal album, although I must mention that the guitar solo on Broken’s original version (Her Halo, 2015) is phenomenal. I guess that for hardcore fans these two songs might be a cool curiosity, to be able listen to them in a more naked version, but after listening to the first five songs on this compilation, they just feel out of place. In regard to the 2017 Demo versions of the songs “Weight of Humanity”, “From Saviour to Assassin”, “Fight or Flight”, and “Are We Soldiers”, they sound heavier and darker than the ones that landed on their 2019 studio album Are We Soldiers, the guitars are higher in the mix and the vocals sound less commercial… as result, I vow for these earlier versions over the official output. I think that those songs were too polished and over produced for AWS, extracting the menacing aspect of the heavy music from them, and leaving purely the mainstream-accepted production values, and a lot of gut and feeling from the band was also lost, IMHO.“Easy Lover” is the other single mentioned before, a cover if the pop classic from Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey. It’s an Ok cover where all has been preserved to sound like the original, but with the obvious heavy punch delivered by the band. The album is an enjoyable listen if you really like the band and the genre. Cheers.
