Album:

Evergrey. The dark Heavy / Power Metal band that brought the Metal world such gems as Solitude Dominance Tragedy , Recreation Day and Inner Circle, keeps up the good work with another great release for 2008 with Torn, with the recruitment of ex-Startovarius Finnish bass player, Jari Kainulainen. These guys reached another milestone on their way to becoming one of the best in their field.Since their formation in 1995, Evergrey became one of the icons of Dark Metal music. Their lyrics are full with desperation along with sadness, betrayal, loss of hope, inner and outer fears and religious meanings. Their music is also dark and sometimes mysterious with a lot of keyboard atmosphere, heavy and low riffs and heart breaking solos, especially on this release which is one of their heaviest material, whiny, sometime on the verge of crying, and vocals with plenty of depth. All of these traits assist in creating the picture that is forevermore grey. The production, which was engineered and supervised by one of the greatest producers that came out of Sweden – Fredrik Nordstrom who is also a guitarist in the Heavy Metal act, Dream Evil, is absolutely flawless and by the amazing guitar and drum sound, one can really recognize Nordstrom’s touch like he did on other projects e.g. his own band and on the joint Greek / American Metal act Firewind.Characteristics here include the heavy sound of B tuned guitars that drive through the album with deep and heavy riffs and cracking solos. The guitars sound very much like the new heavy Paradise Lost, Dream Evil and Firewind. The difference between this sound and the other bands mentioned is that Evergrey chose a sound that can be related to their way and fit their needs. Among some of the heavyweight pieces on this album are: “Fail”, “Soaked” and “Nothing Is Erased”.One thing that is irritating on this album is that there is a small resemblance, regarding the songs themselves, to some of their old material. Surely fanatic fans will pay attention to this mild aspect that surrounds this piece. Also amongst the music is clean and accurate drumming and atmospheric keyboards, that on this album, are way behind in comparison with Evergrey’s old materiel and gives various melodic edges without over engulfing the guitars and bass. Then there are the vocals. Vocalist and guitarist, Tom Englund, is one of the best vocalists of this sub-genre. This man can teach many vocalists in Heavy Metal on how to really express their emotions in their songs. Although sometimes his voice can get a bit whiny, it really helps him spread his words and to reach out to the hearts of the listeners, he has created his own vocal style with the depth of Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. His voice is one of the main reasons that Evergrey, with all their darkness, successfully formed something that is truly unique since the beginning of their career.Torn presents almost a full release of equally excellent tracks. The best of all is “In Confidence” that holds in one’s memory with its dark aura and great chorus and riffs. “Broken Wings” , the opener , is also a song to remember along with “Still Walk Alone” which is another heavy hitter with a great chorus. Joining the club are songs like “Soaked”, which can be interrupted as a story of suicide, “When Kingdom Falls” and the great “Fail” that contains great heavy riffs and solos. The song that fell short is the bonus track, “Caught In A Lie”. It has a good title to it, but more than half of it is a boring and almost unbearable rhythm. The self titled “Torn” is a solid track which could have been a lot more than it is.Many address Evergrey as a Progressive Power Metal act. Although it is silly to start an endless argument about the band’s sub-genre, there is something imperative that must be said. Evergrey, the 2008 model, for the sake of opinion, is a dark Heavy / Power Metal act that do it a bit differently than other acts to try and be original in their own way. Torn is living proof for this anecdote. Evergrey gave it all this year and many of their fans can be proud of this release and with hope that they will keep on doing it with hearts full of emotions and heaviness.

Line-Up:

Tom Englund (ex-Caedes) - Vocals, Guitars
Henrik Danhage (Death Destruction, ex-None) - Guitars

Album:

Three and a half years after the "Glorious Collision", the Swedish metallers Evergrey Report finally with another terrific studio album back. The new plant, again a concept album, entitled "Hymns For The Broken" and is in the band-typical tradition that no album sounds exactly like the others. And yet all Evergrey Trademarks are again available that make the sound of Gothenburg's so unique: Powerful riffs, strong elegiac melodies, clever arrangements and all the enthroned: Tom S. Englund's unmistakable and unique voice."Hymns For The Broken" is probably the most atmospheric densest and most intense album of the band's history - which really says something when a classic like "In Search For Truth," "Recreation Day" and "The Inner Circle" comprehensive discography. For mixing and mastering you could win Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Pretty Maids, Amaranthe, Primal Fear), the fine-tuning "makes Hymns For The Broken" a perfect listening experience.

Album:

Swedish metallers EVERGREY are celebrating their 20th anniversary with the strongest album of their career, "The Storm Within", to be released on September 9.While this may come off as music industry lip service in honor of the quintet, anyone who has followed EVERGREY will find it impossible not to become completely enthralled by the music on "The Storm Within" within the space of the first listen. The band's trademark progressive, dark and melancholic elements are as strong as ever, the album ranks as one of the most progressive record they've created in terms of performance, but EVERGREY managed to put it in a package that is more accessible and direct compared to any of their nine previous outings. Frontman/founder Tom S. Englund credits EVERGREY's learning-by-doing over the past two decades for the feel of "The Storm Within", in particular their all-important "Hymns For The Broken" record from 2014, which saw a revitalized EVERGREY lineup return with a new energy."We went from having no intention of making an album at all to having all the inspiration in the world on 'Hymns For The Broken'," says Englund. "Honestly, we've never felt better. 'The Storm Within' is a massive album. There are no fillers on it and we've never been about that. I think the inspiration speaks for itself."EVERGREY's lyrics have always matched the depth and intensity of their music, and the concept behind "The Storm Within" is no exception. Englund considers the storyline behind the lyrics to be one of the biggest concepts EVERGREY has ever tackled, based on something that everyone can relate to; having someone, losing them, and having to pick yourself up and move on. He goes so far as to call it the band's first "love" album, but it's not a subject that should be taken lightly in the EVERGREY universe."As usual, the lyrics are based on someone or some event in my life," says Englund. "When we were making this album a lot of these relationship issues were going on around me; people losing a partner or a loved one and grieving. 'The Storm Within' is about a search for identity, trying to make yourself full when you feel half empty, and I placed that storyline in an interstellar world."Musically, "The Storm Within" plays to EVERGREY's trademark prog metal attack but it's loaded with double-take moments. Lead-off track "Distance" is a surprise lead single (and first video), the melodically and lyrically stunning "Passing Through" is destined to become a fan favourite, "My Allied Ocean" is one of EVERGREY's most aggressive songs to date, and the epic title track makes for the perfect album closer in the tradition of Devin Townsend or RUSH. The addition of NIGHTWISH vocalist Floor Jansen on "In Orbit" is the icing on an already filling cake."That was actually my wife (Carina Englund) thinking for me," Englund says of Jansen's involvement. "Floor is a personal friend and major EVERGREY fan, so it was over a glass of wine between her and my wife, who asked her if she wanted to do the song. 'In Orbit' is a powerhouse of a song and it would be easy to make it the first single, but it's not the first impression we want to make. That said, it would be stupid not to release it as a single, and if we could get Floor to do the video, that would be a home run."Speaking of Englund's better half Carina, she reprises her ongoing role as EVERGREY's secret weapon on every album since they began, contributing vocals this time out to the song "The Paradox Of The Flame". In addition, EVERGREY renewed their partnership with critically acclaimed video director Patric Ullaeus for "The Storm Within", fulfilling the band's vision of creating the most cinematic album in their catalogue. Three stellar clips were shot and, in a huge promotional push, are slated to hit the internet leading up to the official album release.Englund is proud to have "The Storm Within" represent EVERGREY's all-important 20th anniversary, although he freely admits he didn't take note of the landmark occasion until the album was well underway."I had a goal when I started EVERGREY; I wanted to make 10 albums and that would fulfill my life plan. That's not something I ever thought I would accomplish. It's quite an amazing thing to be a band for 20 years and release albums that aren't sub-par. When I realized we'd done 10 albums in 20 years, it was mind-boggling. I'm proud to say that out of all the albums we've released over the last 20 years, we've never released one that we didn't feel was the best we could do at that time. That goes for every song, every note, everything. That's why we don't do anything half-assed."

Bio:

Evergrey is a progressive metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was founded in 1995 and released its debut album, The Dark Discovery, in 1998. After a minor hiatus the band returns with its ninth album Hymns For The Broken on 26/30 September 2014. On April 4, 2006, Evergrey released their sixth studio album, Monday Morning Apocalypse. The album was produced and mixed by Sanken Sandquist and Stefan Glauman, former producers of Rammstein, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, among others.[citation needed] Tom S. Englund said, regarding the collaboration: "We feel honoured to work with such amazing producers. We are sure that they will succeed in making us sound better than ever before."[citation needed] The album debuted at No. 6 in Sweden.During summer 2006, Evergrey played at many festivals throughout Europe: among others, Sweden Rock Festival, Download Festival, Arvika Festival, Masters of Rock, Storsjöyran and Sziget Festival. From May 5 to May 30, the band toured the United States with In Flames, Nevermore and Throwdown. On September 15 they headlined Prog Power VII in Atlanta, Georgia. On October 24, 2006, Evergrey started a new European tour. They were supported by fellow Swedish death metal band Avatar, and they visited Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden.Evergrey released their seventh studio album, Torn, in September 2008, continuing with their trademark lyrical themes of desperation and despair. Jari Kainulainen permanently filled the role on August 6, 2007, who also played bass on Torn.On May 8, 2008, Evergrey announced that they had signed a deal with Steamhammer/SPV. This included the release of their new album and the entire back catalogue. It also was announced that the new album, Torn, would be released early in September 2008.As the deal includes the band's entire back catalog, there is the possibility of re-releases of previous Evergrey albums with the inclusion of added bonus material. In July 2008, Swedish/Danish band Amaranthe announced that keyboardist Rikard Zander, along with In Flames bassist Peter Iwers, would make a guest appearance on their upcoming album. In May 2010, it was announced that Jonas Ekdahl, Henrik Danhage and Jari Kainulainen have all left Evergrey by mutual decision because of problems with the band members interacting with each other. They called it quits as to not ruin the friendship they all have with each other. An article posted November 13, 2010 on Evergrey's blog contained dates for upcoming concerts as well as the confirmation of a new album titled Glorious Collision on February 28, 2011.Via Facebook posts in November 2013, while writing the next Evergrey album due for release in 2014, the band first confirmed that drummer Hannes Van Dahl would be leaving the band to join Sabaton full-time, and then due to "problems working together" guitarist Marcus Jidell would also be leaving. In August 2014 the release of the music video for King of Errors from the forthcoming Hymns For The Broken revealed that Henrik Danhage and Jonas Ekdahl had returned to the band.

Album:

Still masters of conveying dark, atmospheric introspect through their music, Swedish metal legends Evergrey are set to return with their eleventh studio album, ‘The Atlantic’ in early 2019. Spread thick with melody and following on thematically from its predecessors, ‘The Storm Within’ and “Hymns For The Broken”, closing out an oceanic concept trilogy, vocalist Tom S Englund and the band have indeed weathered some heavy storms to see this record come to light. And their efforts were not for nothing.Unbeknownst to some, upon its initial completion, work on ‘The Atlantic’ was stolen from the bands studio during a break in robbery. Reflected on by Englund as “the worst fucking timing ever”, the singer also confesses that had it not happened, it is likely that the current incarnation of the album would not be what it is now, which is a heightened sense of aggression and vulnerability in light of its initial misfortune. A sentiment reflected in the bands leading single, “A Silent Arc”. A multi-layered composition which takes the listener through both chaos and tranquility, “A Silent Arc” makes for a strong handshake to new efforts from Evergrey. While it may have been an obvious single choice, it certainly wasn’t the bands only potential front-runner. ‘The Atlantic’ is riddled with worthy contenders, perhaps none more so than “Weightless”. Englund and guitarist Henrik Danhage produce what is arguably the strongest grooves on the record in the form of the tracks infectious man riff, further capitalized on by Rikard Zander’s haunting keyboard melodies and bassist Johan Niemann‘s undeniable grit and grumble. Drummer Jonas Ekdahl has a commanding presence throughout the record also, a notable example of which can be found in his complex, yet beautiful percussive tom work on “A Secret Atlantis.A constant in which fans can depend on throughout each and every Evergrey record is the dynamic and emotive vocal delivery from Englund, and here we find no exception. Englund’s ability to capture the heart of a song and translate it through his voice is one of the primary reasons that he was, and very much remains, integral to Evergrey. “All I Have” graces ‘The Atlantic’ with its presence on it. Its lengthy run time and technical proficiency are a treat in themselves for those more affiliated with that side of the band, but they are simply eclipsed by its chorus. From the moment it hits you can feel it bring Englund to his knees in honesty, mortality, and offering whatever left of himself that he has to give in a performance that encapsulates his talent as a sincere and moving vocalist. A heartwarming moment made heartbreakingly good by the level of investment Danhage gives to his solos on this piece. There is no such thing as a standard Evergrey record. Despite being part of a trilogy, even their more recent works have been as rich and as layered as those that came before them, never going stale. This collection of songs closes out that trilogy, which has been a deep and emotional journey for the band, and it does so with class. ‘The Atlantic’ displays intoxicating juxtapositions in true Evergrey fashion. Fierce yet soothing, with an underlying torment that feels almost melancholic, Evergrey have, once again, gone and outdone themselves.

Album:

Gearing up for the release of a highly anticipated 12th album, Swedish progressive metallers Evergrey are at a point that many of their peers can only dream about. Since the release of "Hymns For The Broken" in 2014, Evergrey has enjoyed increased notoriety and success with "The Storm Within" (2016) and "The Atlantic" (2019) - ironically, a conceptual trilogy - which is highly unusual for a veteran act. The guys mean to continue this tradition with "Escape Of The Phoenix", another heavy, melancholic and thought-provoking journey as only Evergrey can create. The result is 11 songs that embody everything Evergrey fans have to expect, albeit a more metal version of "The Atlantic", with songs that are more direct, according to Englund and producer Jacob Hansen.

Album:

Swedish progressive metallers EVERGREY will release their 13th studio album "A Heartless Portrait: The Orphean Testament" on May 20 on the Napalm label. This time their stunning ability to combine progressive heaviness with a flight of emotion reaches new heights. The members of EVERGREY talk about the new album: "Here it is! The new album! Yep, again! That's exactly what we love so much about music - it never ends! Our mission is to make music, so here's another one! 10 new songs! 10 new EVERGREY songs that we hope will be with you as your life continues to change and grow. 10 songs we'd love to see as part of the soundtrack to your new memories and new opportunities. 10 songs whose presence on your playlists we would consider an honour. 10 songs that emerged from the ashes of two years when our creativity had more time to develop than ever before. Ten songs that we hope you'll enjoy listening to as much as we did writing them. As always, we've put ourselves into them with everything we've got and we can't wait to hear your reaction! New year, new album, new label = new opportunities. And that can only get you excited, right? Enjoy!""A Heartless Portrait: The Orphean Testament" impresses with a flawless, carefully crafted sound that expertly reflects the heartfelt sincerity and sizzling metal intensity of the band's music, which combines fierce, technical riffs, soaring solo parts and dramatic synths with the excellent, stirring singing of Englund, who has one of the most recognizable vocalists in heavy music. He expertly strikes a balance between toughness and heaviness on the one hand, and an undeniable soulfulness on the other, while his melancholy, thought-provoking lyrics open up new depths with each listen and stay in the listener's mind for a long time.
