Bio:

Burning Rain is a band formed by guitarist Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake) and singer Keith St John (Montrose) in 1998. Joining the group were drummer Alex Makarovich (ex-Steelheart) and Ian Mayo (ex-Hurricane Alice) on bass. The band released two albums in Japan and Europe, Burning Rain (1999) and Pleasure to Burn (2000), respectively, before going on hiatus due to Aldrich's involvement with Dio and Whitesnake and St John's involvement with Montrose. Aldrich and St John re-activated the group with a new rhythm section, veteran bassist Sean McNabb (Dokken) and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley), and issued a new album, Epic Obsession, in 2013.

Album:

Burning Rain is the debut studio album released by the hard rock band Burning Rain. This 1999 self-titled release marked the debut of Burning Rain, a melodic rock band featuring guitarist Doug Aldrich (ex-Lion, Bad Moon Rising, Hurricane, Dio) and vocalist Keith St. John. For some reason, the straightforward hard rock of Bad Moon Rising's later efforts never sat well with me, so Burning Rain was a welcome return to the kind of melodic rock Aldrich was a part of with Lion and Hurricane. This is an album that draws heavily from both Van Halen and Whitesnake. It alternates between an upbeat party rock sound and a more laid back, blues influenced rock sound. Aldrich is in fine form as always, and St. John's vocals bring to mind David Coverdale. He also sounds a bit like the Cult's Ian Astbury at times. I tend to prefer the band's second album over this one, but this is still a fun rock album to listen to, especially when you consider just how few fun rock & roll albums are made these days.Burning Rain's debut is a better than average melodic rock album from a better than average melodic rock band. The band would issue one further album - 2000's Pleasure to Burn - before disbanding. Doug Aldrich of course went on to higher profile gigs with Dio and Whitesnake.

Aldrich and St John re-activated the group with a new rhythm section, veteran bassist Sean McNabb (Dokken) and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley), and issued a new album, Epic Obsession, in 2013.

Album:

Pleasure to Burn is the second studio album by hard rock band Burning Rain. It was released in 2000 on Pony Canyon. It is the last album with Ian Mayo on bass guitar and Alex Makarovich on drums. The band was on hiatus after touring.Formed by guitarist Doug Aldrich and vocalist Keith St John back in 1998, Burning Rain recorded two well-received albums – their self-titled debut and ‘Pleasure To Burn’ – before the six-string slinger left to team up (albeit briefly) with the late, great Ronnie James Dio, while the vocalist pitched his tent in Ronnie Montrose’s camp.Shortly after jumping ship from Dio to team up with another legendary vocalist David Coverdale, Aldrich actually signed a deal with the latter’s label, Frontiers, to release a third Burning Rain album: however, Whitesnake kept the guitarist so busy that the project never saw the light of day – until now…So, let’s go back to the beginning of the Burning Rain story as, to mark the release (after a nine year delay) of ‘Epic Obsession’, Frontiers also are simultaneously re-issuing the aforementioned pair of archive albums, both remastered and with two bonus tracks on each. The eponymous debut is a not untypical late 1990s hard rock album, from the opening funk-fuelled ‘Smooth Locomotion’ through the sleazy strut ‘n’ swagger of ‘Jungle Queen’ (which lies somewhere between Guns N Roses, Dokken and Tesla) to the Whitesnake-evoking smoothness of ‘Making My Heart Beat’ and the sauntering ‘Can’t Turn Your Back On Love’, the pompous swing of ‘Cherry Grove’ and the helter-skelter joyride of ‘Can’t Cure The Fire’. Showcasing his skills to stunning effect throughout, Aldrich pulls off some truly incandescent solos on the likes of ‘Jungle Queen’, ‘Fool No More’, ‘Can’t Cure The Fire’ and ‘Tokyo Rising’, while St John’s vocals have a lush richness that very much echoes Coverdale at his finest. The two (acoustic) bonus tracks are worthy added-value extras to this superb, highly-overlooked classic.Sophomore opus ‘Pleasure To Burn’ very much picks up where its predecessor left off; while in places it does sound a bit more rushed – possibly to build on the momentum from the first album – it nevertheless is a logical successor in every department, with both Aldrich and St John in fine form. While the comparisons to Coverdale are still extremely obvious (and more so Robert Plant on this opus), especially in the bluesy undertones of the again huge vocal performance, there is also a heavy reference to the likes of Van Halen this time around: just check out the beginning of ‘Stone Cold N Crazy’ (which, after the suitably fiery ‘Fireball’ and the bombastic ‘Love Emotion’, rounds off the album’s suitably frenetic opening section) to see what I mean!‘Cherie Don’t Break My Heart’ is pure ‘Snake through and through, combining the dirty blues of a decade earlier and the slick commercialism of Coverdale’s contemporary output, albeit let down a bit by its Rick Springfield-esque chorus. But that’s a mere prelude for the giant of a track that is to come – ‘Shot Down’ is classic sleaze-meets-melodic hard rock, with a growling, grunting performance from Aldrich’s shotgun blast-blasting guitar and St John on totally stunning form with a vocal guaranteed to make women go weak at the knees and grown men cry with admiration. And then they only go and follow it with the (snake) hip-shimmying bump ‘n’ roll of the luscious ‘Love De Jour’, to make a duo of powerhouse dancefloor fillers, and ‘Faithfully Yours’ – the sort of ballad Eric Martin or Mike Tramp wish they could call their own.The problem with ‘Pleasure…’ comes in its final third, which is extremely disappointing in comparison to what has come before. While the musicianship, especially Aldrich’s highly evocative guitar work, remains superb, the likes of ‘Sex Machine’ and ‘Metal Superman’ have the word “rushed” written all over them, especially on the lyrical front, something which is highlighted even more on ‘Judgement Day’ – a pleasant enough acoustic-led number, but St John tries just too hard to emulate Robert Plant to the extent that it almost verges on parody… although closer ‘Devil Money’, despite a shaky start, does go some way towards redeeming matters, while the acoustic version of ‘Cherie…’ included on this re-issue is beautiful in its mournfulness.

Line-Up:

Keith St. John – vocals
Doug Aldrich – guitars, producing

Alex Makarovich – drums

Album:

13 Years After “Pleasure To Burn”, and BURNING RAIN are finally back in action. The Band, which has been mostly known by their amazing guitar player Doug Aldrich (DIO, WHITESNAKE, LION), is a kind of a supergroup that has been growing up under our noses and now it’s back with an awesome cutting edge Hard Rock Album. The album is a mix of LED ZEPPELIN, WHITESNAKE, Sleaze / Hard Rock and 80’ like acoustic power ballads, the comfort zone of the foursome crew, and it sounds amazing. The rhythm section of Sean Mcnabb and Mat Starr is tight as you can listen straight from the opening tune “Sweet Little Baby”, an up-tempo Rock N’ Roll AC/DC, LED ZEPPELIN. Keith St. John’s vocals are a mix of Coverdale and Plant but with an American touch, and Aldrich is ripping the hell of his Les Paul with riffs and solos that sound like a mix of 70s and 80’s Hard Rock on steroids.“Heaven Gets Me By” is the 4th Track and the first acoustic one that sounds a lot like new WHITESNAKE acoustic stuff (same guitar Player) but again very American. The whole vibe of the album is very strip club in sunset street and that’s exactly what they meant and it sounds great, just a flashback to the awesome Hard Rock of the 80’. “Pray Out Loud”, another one with a ZEPPELIN vibe is another must listen on the record and of course the single “Ride The Monkey”.In conclusion St. John is the kind of American singer that is just not made for today’s scene, and that is a good thing. Aldrich Has the same thing like Slash, Zakk Wylde , Jimmy Page and John Sykes that no matter what band he’s in you just immediately know it’s him and his acoustic playing is over the top also. This is a must For Hard Rock Fans, ZEPPELIN, WHITESNAKE, awesome singing and guitars.

Line-Up:

Keith St. John - Vocals
Doug Aldrich - Guitar
Sean Mcnabb - Bass

08. My Lust Your Fate
09. Made for Your Heart

Bio:

Burning Rain is a band formed by guitarist Doug Aldrich (Revolution Saints, The Dead Daisies, ex-Dio, ex-Whitesnake) and singer Keith St. John (Montrose) in 1998. Joining the group were drummer Alex Makarovich (ex-Steelheart) and Ian Mayo (ex-Hurricane Alice) on bass. The band released two albums in Japan and Europe, Burning Rain (1999) and Pleasure to Burn (2000), respectively, before going on hiatus due to Aldrich's involvement with Dio and St. John's involvement with Montrose. Aldrich and St. John re-activated the group with a new rhythm section, veteran bassist Sean McNabb (Dokken) and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley), and issued a new album, Epic Obsession, in 2013. Lately the band was on hiatus because of Aldrich's new band Revolutions Saints. In 2018 band was reunited with Slaughter drummer Blas Elias and bassist Brad Lang (Y&T) and the new album Face The Music will released in 2019.

Album:

Burning Rain is the hard rock band founded by guitarist extraordinaire Doug Aldrich (Revolution Saints,The Dead Daisies, ex-Whitesnake, Dio) and vocalist Keith St. John (Montrose, Kingdom Come). They will release their fourth studio album, ‘Face the Music’, on 22nd March 2019 via Frontiers Music srl and have made a first single and video from the record available to coincide with its announcement. When asked why they chose to release ‘Midnight Train’ as the first single, Aldrich explains that “it’s been some time since the last BR record, and we wanted to come out swinging! ‘Midnight Train’ encompasses the sound of Burning Rain. It sounds fresh and heavy. I thought it was a cool lead-off track to reintroduce the band. People normally have different ideas about favourite songs and there are a number of tracks that could have been first, but we just went with ‘Midnight Train’.“The message in ’Midnight Train’, albeit fully ensconced in carnality, is about wanting something so brutally bad when you can’t have it,” adds St. John. “The main character here is basically a deeply tortured soul during all the daytime hours. The phallic likening to the train and its track, along with the blackness, the bed of nails and the cravings of the night are meant to further fortify the extremity of sexual addiction.Doug had all the basic music together including bass, drums and all when he first played me a demo of the song and I loved it immediately. The first experimental vocal track I scatted out had the basic framework for the chorus, which we both felt had good potential, but the original verse began with a higher, bluesier part that seemed to not quite fit. After I fashioned a new verse with a lower, more growly approach, we both felt it really complemented the chorus and we knew this track was in good standing!” Burning Rain was established in 1998 by guitarist Doug Aldrich and vocalist Keith St. John. After meeting via mutual friends, they commenced work on what would become their self-titled debut album. That 1999 record established the band as a hungry yet seasoned group of musicians. Although the album received a limited release, it attracted rave reviews from fans and critics alike for its take on heavy, blues-y hard rock. The following year a follow-up entitled ‘Pleasure To Burn’ showed off a matured Aldrich and St.John collaboration and gained even higher praise. In 2001, Aldrich joined Dio but departed in 2003 after being approached by David Coverdale to join a newly reformed Whitesnake, while St. John joined forces with guitar legend Ronnie Montrose. During his years in Whitesnake, Aldrich started working on new music for Burning Rain which eventually saw the light of day in 2013 as the album ‘Epic Obsession’. This third release was again met with enthusiasm. Aldrich would eventually leave Whitesnake and join The Dead Daisies and Revolution Saints, which left Burning Rain on an extended hiatus. Now, finally, a new album is ready for release! ‘Face The Music’ is a blues driven hard rock record and is a true tour-de-force. With a renewed line-up featuring the amazing Blas Elias (Slaughter) on drums and bassist Brad Lang (Y&T), the album evokes the classic 70’s hard rock scene, but also stays true to the band’s sound. One thing is for certain, Burning Rain has made the long wait for new music well worth it.
