Bio:

Rising out of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene in the late '70s, Grand Prix featured a more melodic approach to heavy metal than most of the bands on the British scene, generating an AOR sound closer in feel to American rock groups like Journey. Original members of Grand Prix included ex-Dirty Tricks drummer Andy Beirne, bassist Ralph Hood, keyboardist Phil Lanzon, guitarist Michael O'Donoghue, and ex-Legend singer Bernie Shaw, who was eventually replaced by singer Robin McAuley. The group signed to RCA and released a debut album, simply called Grand Prix, in 1980, followed by the more focused There for None to See in 1982, after which the group jumped to Chrysalis Records for the polished Samurai in 1983. Beirne left Grand Prix later that same year, reportedly because he felt the group's studio output wasn't hard-enough sounding. His drum chair was filled by Clive Edwards, but by early 1984 the group was out of gas and closed the door on a roughly three-year run as a band, leaving behind a small but solid discography.

Album:

Originally formed back in the late seventies as Paris, GRAND PRIX was from the start a different beast in the UK scene.Their melody-rich blend of guitars and pomp-fueled keys were much more in tune with what was happening on the other side of the Atlantic than anything remotely British or European sounding.Following time spent on the live circuit they came to the attention of RCA who signed them up ... on condition they changed their name to Grand Prix.Their tenure with RCA produced two albums – their eponymous debut with original vocalist Bernie Shaw (now of Uriah Heep) was particularly memorable – but it will be for their swansong "Samurai" that the band are best remembered.Shaw was dropped in favour of Robin McAuley (later to achieve international fame with Michael Schenker), and perhaps the superb singer was the catalyst for the band to record one of the most memorable pompous AOR Melodic Rock albums of its day."Samurai" showcased a newfound maturity in the songwriting department and a glossier sound aimed squarely at the American market. From the moment crescendo-driven opener "Give Me What’s Mine" kicked in it was clear that Grand Prix had evolved into a band with a truly international pedigree and then some.Boasting more hooks than most rock&pop bands could muster, tracks like the smouldering power ballad "Here We Go Again", rabble rousing "Freedom", the swaggering "Countdown To Zero" and shimmering title track "Samurai" were a bold revelation, affirmation that the UK finally had a serious contender to the likes of Styx, Journey and Foreigner. That the band never went on to achieve fame and fortune (indeed, they split soon after the album was released) is once again testament to the ineptitude of the clueless executives who ran the record industry at the time.Lovingly rescued from the vaults, "Samurai" is brilliantly remastered by the ever dependable Jon Astley and presented with all the usual Rock Candy Records trimmings.Great packaging with extensive sleeve notes about the making of the album and a couple of previously unreleased live bonus tracks taken from their Reading Festival appearance in '82."Samurai" is a prime example of British Pomp infused AOR at its best, and as such is utterly indispensable in your collection.

Album:

Pioneers of the UK pomp / melodic hard rock scene, the two more celebrated albums by GRAND PRIX remastered with bonus tracks by Rock Candy Records have been requested here. The band's self-titled debut LP "Grand Prix" is delicious from start to finish.Originally formed back in the late Seventies with the name 'Paris', GRAND PRIX was from the start a different beast in the UK scene. Their melody-rich blend of guitars and pomp-fueled keys were much more in tune with what was happening on the other side of the Atlantic ocean than anything remotely British or European sounding.Following time spent on the live circuit they came to the attention of RCA who signed them up ... on condition they change their name to Grand Prix. With a sound steeped in American radio rock, comparisons were immediately made to Journey, Styx, Kansas, Saga. However, Grand Prix were, it must be said, practically the only British band of the era that could hold a candle to the serious melodic sensibilities of their American cousins.Part of the reason for this was the appointment of excellent vocalist Bernie Shaw (later in Uriah Heep), a Canadian citizen who had moved to the UK in search of new opportunities.Released at the beginning of the Eighties, the band's self-titled debut LP "Grand Prix" was launched to solid critical acclaim, but their music was quickly identified as being far too sophisticated to truly align them to the NWOBHM.Like Praying Mantis, White Spirit, Tobruk and Shy, the band’s penchant for polish, melody and complex arrangements meant that they were quickly sidelined by many in favour of the more in-your-face attributes of the competition.Grand Prix’s largely overlooked, self titled debut album, is actually one of the greatest Melodic Rock albums of the era. Immersed in Pomp and circumstance, the record contains a number of classic tracks, including ‘Waiting For The Night’, ‘Thinking Of You’, ‘Mama Says’, 'West Wind' 'Feel Like I Do', and ‘Which Way Did The Wind Blow’, amongst other gems. The then young Shaw sounds at places like Steve Perry, Phil Lanzon creates some wonderful ivory layers with his keyboards, synthesizers and piano, while Michael O'Donoghue provide clean guitar riffs & solos.A mandatory listen to all pomp AOR / classy melodic rock fans, "Grand Prix" is a little gem from the glorious era. This is a great 24-bit remastering by Rock Candy from original source tapes including 3 bonus tracks, 4,000 word story of the making of the album with full involvement by the band, rare photos, all spread out over a superb 12 page full colour booklet.

Line Up:

Bernie Shaw - lead vocals
Phil Lanzon - keyboards, synthesizers, piano, vocals
Michael O'Donoghue - guitars, vocals
Ralph Hood - bass, vocals
Andy Beirne - drums, percussion

Tracklist:

01. Waiting for the Night
02. Day in the Life
03. Thinking of You
04. Mama Sayes
05. Which Way Did the Wind Blow
06. Westwind
07. Next to You
08. You Know It Can Be
09. Feel Like I Do
10. The Very Last Time (Dreamer)
11. Feels Good (Grand Prix) [B-Side] (Bonus Track)
12. Room 155 (Unreleased) (Bonus Track)
13. Somewhere Tonight (Unreleased) (Bonus Track)

Album:

To complete their discography, here's GRAND PRIX second album for RCA "There For None To See", originally poorly distributed / promoted due to legal troubles. Unknown by many, here's the remastered reissue.Commonly praised for their 3rd, close to perfection melodic rock / AOR final album 'Samurai', Grand Prix's second effort "There For None To See" is often ignored in everyone's favorite lists, however it's a brilliant one too.Robin McAuley (later to achieve international fame with Michael Schenker) replaced original vocalist Bernie Shaw, and for the second album the band was focused to a more instant, appealing commercial sound."There For None To See" was a pivotal link between their early attempts at Pompy AOR in the self-titled debut, and the glossy production design of 3rd LP Samurai, being for many Grand Prix's most complete album. And indeed it's a superb Melodic Hard Rock / AOR disc plenty of memorable songs, in fact, I can't find a filler here. All are great.Just to name a few; opener "Heaven And Hell" and its awesome chorus and synths, the terrific pomp-infused "Troubador", the tinkling "Runaway" or the splendid Americanized AOR in "Take A Chance".The wonderful "Keep On Believing" is the British answer to Journey while the atmospheric ballad "Paradise" is nothing short than perfect. As said, the received zero promotion, and it didn't saw the light of day on CD after many years. This remastered release includes as bonus track another great song to treasure; "Life On The Line", originally appeared as B-side in the Keep On Believing single."There For None To See" is a class '80s record deserving a place into any serious AOR / Melodic Hard Rock collection.

Line Up:

Robin McAuley - vocals
Michael O'Donoghue - guitars
Phil Lanzon - keyboards
Ralph Hood - bass
Andy Beirne - drums

Tracklist:

01. Heaven To Hell
02. Troubadour
03. Take A Chance
04. Paradise
05. Keep On Believing
06. Taking Your Life Away
07. Runaway
08. Tough Of The Track
09. Atlantis
10. Relay
11. Life On The Line [b-side] (Bonus Track)
