Bio:

The Canadian heavy metal band Helix formed in 1974 in Kitchener, Ontario; comprising singer Brian Vollmer, guitarists Brent Doerner and Paul Hackman, bassist Keith Zurbrigg, and drummer Brian Doerner, the group debuted in 1979 with Breaking Loose. White Lace & Black Leather followed two years later, and was the first Helix release to feature new bassist Mike Uzilac and drummer Leo Nebudeck; with 1983's No Rest for the Wicked, the group signed to Capitol, substituting Nebudeck for another new drummer, Greg "Fritz" Hinz. Bassist Daryl Gray replaced Uzilac in time for the follow-up, Walkin' the Razor's Edge, which spawned the hit "Rock You"; 1985's Long Way to Heaven, meanwhile, topped the charts in Sweden. After touring in support of 1987's Wild in the Streets, Brent Doerner quit Helix, and the remaining quartet resurfaced with Back for Another Taste. In 1992, Hackman was killed when the group's van rolled down a 40-foot embankment after a concert in Vancouver; Helix forged on, however, with Brent Doerner returning to the lineup long enough to record 1993's It's a Business Doing Pleasure, which also featured guitarist Greg Frazer. In 1998, Helix -- now comprising Vollmer, Gray, Hinz, and guitarists Mark Chichkan and Gary Borden -- issued Half Alive. A collection of B Sides arrived in 2002, followed by the full-length Rockin' in My Outer Space in 2004. Power of Rock N Roll arrived in 2007.

A collection of B Sides arrived in 2002, followed by the full-length Rockin' in My Outer Space in 2004. Power of Rock N Roll arrived in 2007.

Album:

HELIX '80s most relevant albums 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records. One of the hardest working acts in Rock multi-hued history, Canadian five-piece Helix pretty much spent their major label years out on the road, showing that the tour-album-tour routine could indeed be made to work. After a couple of strong albums, Helix got signed by major label Capitol. Finally the big break came, after nearly 10 years of hard work, with the excellent "No Rest For The Wicked".The trick was re-branding Helix as a 'metal band' instead of a plain old bar rock band, and add them into the rising hard rock new wave with the likes of Quiet Riot.An early video for “Heavy Metal Love” was filmed in T-shirts and jeans. It was only after they switched to leather clothing and a more 'metal image', did people start to take notice. “Heavy Metal Love” was re-filmed for a more MTV appeal, and Helix were more or less off to the races. They had a boost from CanCon rules, which meant the video went into rotation on MuchMusic.“Heavy Metal Love”, written in a crummy hotel room in Seaforth Ontario is an ode to Joan Jett; or rather a fantasy about Joan Jett.It remains as fun now as it was then.Helix re-recorded the tune in 2006 for their Get Up EP, but it is this original version on "No Rest For The Wicked" produced by Tom Treumuth that has become timeless.Indeed, it was chosen for the wedding scene in the Trailer Park Boys movie that same year. It’s still a great groove, and a whole lot of fun.Fun is a great word to describe Helix’s music in general, and "No Rest For The Wicked" is perhaps their strongest effort, easier to sink your teeth into on just one listen. The new heavier direction didn’t alienate their old fans, but it did gain them plenty of new ones. It’s more than just “Heavy Metal Love” — every track is great, every single one of ’em.The solid title track still serves as Helix’ show opener. Need some party rock? Look no further than “Let’s All Do It Tonight”. Listen to that one, and then try to forget the chorus. If you like that kind of melodic hard rock, then you’ll probably also dig “Don’t Get Mad Get Even”, the second single / video made for the album.Need some sleazy hard rock? Then “Check Out the Love”, before you do the “Dirty Dog”. Both songs are killer grooves, with the latter suspended by a killer riff and Vollmer’s shredded vocal cords. And let’s not forget “White Lace and Black Leather”.This is about as dirty as they get, and I love it.On this album Helix started to write power ballads, and we have here the ballsy “Never Want To Lose You”, one of my favorite tracks on the LP.Need a boost of adrenaline? Then the doctor prescribes “Ain’t No High Like Rock ‘N’ Roll”. Kicking up the pace a few notches, it still retains that Helix knack for melody.Helix's "No Rest For The Wicked" is an old favorite. Surely this was one of the best hard rock / sleazy rock releases to come out of Canada in its day. After all these years it still sounds great and the remastering here breathes new life into the old beast. This isn't a rare record by any stretch, but this is the best package a Helix fan could wish for. It follows the Rock Candy pattern of a full booklet with extensive liner notes and extracts from old magazine articles and fresh unseen band pictures. Rock Candy's releases sound & look a million bucks and that is reason enough to make sure you have all their titles in your classics collection.

Album:

HELIX '80s most relevant albums 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records. Two were featured here some days ago, it's time for the other 2.Let's go with their more 'AORish' album from the mid-Eighties; the ultra polished "Long Way To Heaven".Helix were a band you could always count on to deliver; live they were like an explosion in a circus and on record they served up numerous hard rock anthems.Furthermore, they were relentless hard workers, banging out classy albums in the blink of an eye and touring the world like men possessed. The smart money was on Helix not only making the grade but also setting the bar for Canadian rock in general."Long Way To Heaven", originally issued in 1985, was the band’s third album for Capitol records, their two previous records having elevated them from interesting contenders to hot-shot upstarts with their eyes set firmly on the prize.Naturally, this album doesn’t disappoint either, erupting with a fine selection of sing-it-shout-it party rock anthems to rival the most successful bands of the era, adding a keyboard background and a hair metal feel.Tracks such as the catchy 'Kids Are All Shakin', 'Ride The Rocket', 'School Of Hard Knocks', 'Bangin’ Off-A The Bricks' and the title track itself leave no stone unturned in the quest for the perfect hard rock anthem. The first single was 'Deep Cuts the Knife' (Top 20), one of my favorite Helix tunes ever (co-written by AORster Bob Halligan, Jr.) a killer midtempo full of '80s magic. The song received heavy airplay in the U.S., gaining "double breaker" status, and in Canada was added to heavy video play on MuchMusic.Issued to universal acclaim, Helix’s hard work paid off, especially in Europe. Their first tour to kick off "Long Way To Heaven" was in Sweden where they became the first Canadian Rock band ever to tour that country extensively. For this they achieved their first #1 album in Scandinavia.Elsewhere, the reception was equally as warm, allowing the band to continue their relentless touring schedule and driving home the message that Helix were one of the hottest tickets on the scene.Helix first rocked the world a couple years earlier on the excellent No Rest For The Wicked, but I believe they put all the pieces together just right on this "Long Way To Heaven". The songs are great and production top notch. This Rock Candy remaster is excellent, the best treatment of all Helix reissues, where you can really feel the difference.Chart Position: Canada # 29 / USA # 109/Sweden # 14.

A collection of B Sides arrived in 2002, followed by the full-length Rockin' in My Outer Space in 2004. Power of Rock N Roll arrived in 2007.

Album:

"Rock It Science" is the new HELIX album released by Perris Records but it's not just a Greatest Hits album, and includes a brand new song, the really fun titled '(Gene Simmons Says) Rock Is Dead'.Helix are Canadian hard rock royalty. Active since 1974, Helix are ranked among Anvil, Lee Arron, The Killer Dwarfs, and a very select few other hard n heavy acts to come out of this country in the 1980s. Thanks to the efforts of Brian Vollmer in particular, Helix have been a constant entity for over 40 years. Vollmer, the only original member, gathered new musicians under the Helix banner and released Breaking Loose and White Lace & Black Leather, in 1979 and 1981 respectively. The strength of those independent releases got Helix signed to Capitol Records in 1983, subsequently releasing albums almost yearly, from 1983 to 1990.Helix in its long history, have issued a half-dozen live or greatest hits albums. What makes Rock it Science interesting is not necessarily “Deep Cuts the Knife” or “Rock You.” Wild In The Streets” is my all-time favourite Helix song. Of course “Heavy Metal Love” is a classic. I love all these tracks. My original draft of this review opined the addition of “Heavy Metal Love,” “Rock You,” “Deep Cuts the Knife” and “Wild In The Streets” as being predictable selections. However, after listening closely to these cuts, I find that several have actually been re-recorded by Helix rather recently, in fact. It’s not a re-imagining of the songs as the new recordings stick pretty close to the original.Brian Vollmer said that Helix’s record company in the ’80s still owns the rights to some of the band’s biggest albums, so he decided to re-record the songs to have control over his material.I think they are fantastic re-recordings, and I’m glad I now have them in my collection. Probably the most notable differences can be found on “Wild In The Streets” with the addition of a synths / organ in the chorus, and a much more raw guitar sound overall. As for the remaining tracks, I didn’t start following Helix until No Rest For The Wicked in 1983. Therefore, “Billy Oxygen” and the gentle beginning to “You’re A Woman Now” are nice adds, for me to discover the origins of Helix.Additionally is great to hear a selection from 1998’s Half-Alive — “Shock City Psycho Rock.” It’s a good little tune that kept Helix in the public consciousness during the dark Nineties. Get Up! was another album I didn’t have, but think I might need to look up. It sees the band returning to its classic sound, but with a hint of pop and some sleaze bar style dancability. Not that “dancability” is a word, but I think you get my meaning. Vagabond Bones in 2009 is certainly in my collection, with “Make Em Dance” being a highlight of that album. “Even Jesus” is an ok song from 2014’s Bastard Of The Blues but there were stronger tracks on that record that could have been added either as well as, or instead of.Finally, we get to new track on "Rock It Science", “(Gene Simmons Says) Rock Is Dead.” I know it’s been on YouTube for several months and hopefully you’ve seen it already, because the video is hilarious, and the song itself is pretty good and very well recorded & produced. The video pokes fun at KISS bassist Gene Simmons, who made his now infamous comment that “rock is finally dead” during an interview earlier this year. I appreciate Vollmer‘s message, and with former Crash Kelly member Sean Kelly assisting with the composition, the music is pretty solid as well.I like the fact that Helix included some early cuts, and some more recent ones. As said, this is a worth having release as all are new versions, and while pretty sound the same, there's few twists to enjoy.Pick up "Rock It Science" if you want to dip your toe in the Helix shallow end, and then find just about any full-length album and dive in headfirst.

Album:

HELIX ’80s most relevant albums ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ by Rock Candy Records.“Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge” was Helix 2nd album with Capitol Records, and they went around the world with the hit ‘Rock You’.With their major label debut album No Rest For The Wicked racking up healthy sales and great reviews, Helix forged a reputation as one of the hottest young Canadian rock bands to have emerged in the early ’80s.Their fire brand blend of hot rock, ear shattering riffs and shout-it-out-loud hooks made them not only radio / MTV friendly but also a must see in-concert experience.“Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge” marks a step up for the band in terms of both production and song content.Tracks such as ‘Young And Wreckless’, ‘When The Hammer Falls’, ‘Animal House’ and a genuine Canadian hit single in ‘(Make Me Do) Anything You Want’, showcase a band revved up and ready to rock, taking it to the people with endless road work. And the album packs ‘Rock You’ (written by AORster Bob Halligan Jnr), one of the biggest hair metal anthems in history, which ranked in the Top 40 for several weeks.“Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge” is a kick ass record, an ’80s melodic hard rock classic. The Jon Astley remastering is really good retaining the integrity of the original sound, just adding some freshness and deep end.To make this Rock Candy re-issue even more interesting, we have three bonus tracks. All are taken from the rare ‘Live at the Marquee’ promotional-only EP (recorded at the London Marquee on January 10th, 1985). According to what I hear, it must have been a Helix feast over there. As always with Rock Candy, you get real value for your hard earned money: an excellent remaster, really good bonuses and a 12-page booklet in which you can read all about the band around the time they recorded this high energy gem.

Album:

HELIX ’80s most relevant albums ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ by Rock Candy Records.Let’s go with now with “Wild In The Streets“.With the success of their previous albums and benefiting from unrelenting promotion by Capitol Records, Helix toured the world for almost 2 years establishing themselves not only in America and Canada but also in Europe, a territory that embraced the band as if they were their very own.“Wild In The Streets” was a record of familiar components; big hooks, teeth rattling drum ‘n’ bass, razor sharp guitar riffs and shredding solos all locked into a brace of tunes so catchy they would easily shame the likes of Kiss and Def Leppard.Of the ten tracks on offer three were contributed by class outside sources, namely Nazareth (‘Dream On’, a killer version better that the original), FM (‘Never Gonna Stop The Rock’) and an unreleased Joe Elliott song called ‘She’s Too Tough’ – which Def Leppard eventually recorded themselves as a B-Side later – all helping to confirm that Helix were still operating at the top of their game. The sound here is of a band getting back to their roots cultivating a far more aggressive in-your-face attitude.Produced partly by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Dokken) but mainly by Mike Stone (Whitesnake, Journey) and recorded at Richard Branson’s Manor Studios in rural Oxfordshire, the album goes someway to reaffirming both their party-hardy roots and their ability to entertain on a spectacular level. There were several drummers contributing on the record, due to main sticksman Greg Fritz Hinz unexplained problems: Mickey Curry (Bryan Adams), Matt Frenette (Loverboy) and even former Helix drummer Brian Doerner (Saga, Refugee), guitarist Brent’s twin brother. The keyboards were provided by British master Don Airey.“Wild In The Streets” one of their best produced albums and rocks great. The Rock Candy remastering gives the album some much needed bottom end.Despite good initial promotion and sales, the recording label soon pulled the plug on the album (they were searching for a ‘new’ Bon Jovi clone).

Album:

Perris Records has just released "B-Sides", a collection of HELIX songs that the band published by themselves years ago under the same title, but this 2016 is a completely different release, including tracks not present previously, new artwork, and on a strictly limited pressing of only 500 CDs.The title "B-Sides" here is misleading; a B-side is a track that appears on the flipside of a single, and is often not on the album. Most the tracks on this album not appeared on the flipside of any singles, at least not these versions. However, the misleading title does not mar the excellent music contained within."B-Sides" contains songs written for various Helix albums from 1990 onwards, except the fun 'Like Taking Candy From a Baby', previously unreleased and recorded at the early stages of Helix in 1978. It was taped during the sessions from Helix’s excellent first album (Breaking Loose), but never released. Some tracks have been re-recorded, such as the Quiet Riot meets Spinal Tap 'S-E-X-Rated', which actually appeared as a B-side, but it’s not the same version as on that single. Same with the killer rocker 'Jaws of the Tiger' originally appeared on Over 60 Minutes With... (1989) but this version for "B-Sides" was re-recorded.On the other hand, 'Everybody Pays The Price' (B-side to the single The Storm from 1990s Back For Another Taste) appears in its original form. The really good 'Danger Zone' features the reunion of surviving members of the "classic" 1980s lineup, as well as 'S.E.X. Rated'.Other songs were recorded by different Helix members at different times in the band's history, ie. 'Delilah', which had Jeff Fountain on bass, Archie Gamble on drums, and Rainer Weichmann on guitar & producing. Some songs feature players who were associated with the band in some way or form: the weird 'I Just Wanna Be Stoned' (Tony Paleschi on bass, Bill Gadd on guitar, Archie Gamble on drums) and the pretty Kiss-like 'You Got the Love That I Like' (Danny Broadbeck on guitar & producing). But the absolute gem on this 2016 release - not present on the original "B-Sides" - is without a doubt the rare remix of 'Good To The Last Drop' one of the finest Helix compositions ever. 'Good To The Last Drop (Tony Bongiovi Radio Re-mix)' is much more AOR than the original, including lots of keyboards, harmony vocals and a true '80s feel.Helix's "B-Sides" is not just a compilation of left-overs or discarded tracks, not at all. From the midtempos to the hard rocking stuff, this Helix CD has a bit of everything you already liked about the band, with a modern production edge on newly recorded tracks.Along the way, there are appearances from pretty much every major Helix member from the indie days to the mid-90s. You will even hear songs written and performed by Paul Hackman, the late Helix guitarist who was tragically killed in a 1992 car accident.Every song kicks, there’s not a weak track in the bunch. Hard Rock and Helix fans absolutely need to hear this music; not B-sides but in fact some of Helix’s best stuff.

Album:

The biggest heavy metal band in Canadian history! With a catalogue of music that spans a history of over 30 years. With 5 gold and 2 platinum albums under their belt and millions of records sold around the world, we see HELIX release their 13th studio album, not counting several live CDs and numerous compilation albums this year called "Bastard Of The Blues".Written primarily with Sean Kelly, the CD is a continuation of 2008's "Vagabond Bones" and also contains two songs from the follow-up EP "Skin in the Game." It's now been six years since Kelly and Vollmer combined writing forces, and it shows. The songs are more focused and bigger sounding, the lyrics more concise and catchy. The song "Bastard of the Blues" describes Helix music to a "T"-the unholy co-mingling of blues and rock and roll to produce the bastard child heavy metal; at least the variety Helix has been kicking out for close to 40 years now. The track "Screaming at the Moon" also features Nick Walsh of Slic Toxic (a platinum selling Canadian metal band) on back-up vocals. Helix will be on a Europe tour including Spain, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark later this year. The last time Helix toured Europe was with KISS in 1983 and in 1988 with Ian Gillan. Helix also appeared in Sweden June of 2005 at the Sweden Rock Festival. Helix is already booked on 2015's MONSTERS OF ROCK BOAT CRUISE with some of the biggest and brightest metal/hard rock stars of the 80s'.

Album:

Canadian hard rock legends HELIX are releasing their new album “Old School” via Perris Records next June 22, 2019, and you have it here in exclusive today.“Old School” is HELIX’s 15th full length studio album, comprised of songs written from 1981-1989 but never released. Produced by longtime bass player Daryl Gray and mastered by Harry Hess of Harem Scarem, these are must have classic HELIX.The “Old School” album came about quite by accident. In 2018 frontman Brian Vollmer was cleaning out the basement closet at Planet Helix. What he found were various tapes he had almost forgotten about.Vollmer said; “I was going to throw out the tapes until I got a frantic phone call from my old friend Greg Godovitz who realized the tapes’ value. Greg made me take a serious look at what I had and I realized there was at least a whole album of unreleased material – and so the idea of “Old School” was born.None of these tracks were ever released. Three of the songs they were able to extract from 2” tape were recorded for the ‘Back for Another Taste’ sessions in 1989: ‘Games Mother Never Taught You’, ‘Tie Me Down’, and ‘Your Turn to Cry’. The late Helix guitarist Paul Hackman is playing guitar and singing on these tracks.Vollmer continues: “To “extract” these recordings from the tape we had to take the tapes to Beach Studios outside of Goderich, Ontario and get Siegfried Meier to thermally bake them. Upon doing so, the tracks were immediately transferred to digital. Later they were mixed by Siegfried; some with minor overdubs by Daryl Gray”‘Cheers’ was taken from a cassette tape and cleaned up by Siegfried as well. This song is a live recording off the floor of the studio. The other tracks on the album, ‘If Tears Could Talk’, ‘Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound’, ‘Southern Comfort’, ‘Closer’, ‘Coming Back with Bigger Guns’, and ‘Hound Dog Howlin’ Blues’ were re-recorded by “tracing” the songs from cassette tapes. This was done because the songs were either unfinished or the cassettes were in bad shape. This album is dedicated to the memory of Paul Hackman, who played on 3 of these tracks and was a co-writer on 8 of the tracks.“Old School” is indeed old-school, classic Helix hard rock with an ’80s vibe.
