Bio:

Return is a Norwegian rock band that peaked in popularity during the late '80s with a hair metal style that went out of fashion in the early '90s. With several Top Ten smash hits to its name, most of them power ballads, the band reunited after the turn of the century and proved popular as a concert draw. Founded in 1980 in Stange, Norway, the band is comprised of Knut Erik Østgård (vocals, guitar), Steinar Hagen (guitar, vocals), Tore Larsen (bass, vocals), and Øyvind Håkonsen (drums). Return scored their initial breakout hit in 1985 with "Sheila," and a couple years later they made their full-length album debut with To the Top (1987), a Top 20 hit on the Norwegian albums chart that includes the early hit "Sing Me a Song" in addition to "Sheila." The band's second full-length effort, Attitudes (1988), was an even greater success, reaching the Top Five of the albums chart and spawning the Top Ten smash hit "Change the Attitude." The follow-up efforts Straight Down the Line (1989) and Fourplay (1991) were similarly successful, reaching the Top Ten of the albums chart and spawning the respective smash hits "Can You Forgive Me?" and "Tell Me." While the band's fifth album, V (1992), spawned another smash hit, "Take This Heart," it marked a sharp downturn in popularity, stalling at number 17 on the albums chart. Faced with a dramatically changing rock landscape in the wake of alternative rock's mainstream breakthrough, Return dissolved for the remainder of the decade. At the turn of the century, they released a chart-topping greatest-hits collection, The Best of Return (2000), plus the in-concert recording Return Live (2000); in addition, there was a series of reunion concerts. A half-decade later, the band released its first collection of new studio material in over a decade, the eponymous album Return (2005). The comeback effort didn't prove especially popular, however, as the album barely broke into the Top 40 and spawned no significant hits. Another greatest-hits collection, the double-disc compilation Best of...Both Worlds (2008), was released a few years later.

Album:

As part of the ‘Norske Albumklassikere 80-tallet’ series from the excellent Norwegian reissue label Norske Albumklassikere – which seems to have access to almost every Norwegian release from the 70s and 80s – comes this really welcomed remastered reissue of RETURN 1988’s album ”Attitudes”, including a bonus track. If you’re in the need for an ’80s dose of fluffy 80s AOR, ”Attitudes” does the tryck. This album takes you back to an era when rock music was fun, catchy, infectious, with songs plenty of catchiness, sweet multi-part vocal harmonies, and that Europe-like keys/synths. Very poppy at places – and perhaps a bit cheesy – but who cares, this is feel-good melodic music!Hailing from Stange Hedmark, the band started out under the name ‘Polish’ in 1980. The rehearsals didn’t always were ‘very polished’, as initially the band played classic heavy metal.Near the mid-Eighties the guys fall in love with the melodic sound which started to dominate the Rock scene, and musically their approach was much more radio oriented. In 1985, vocalist Knut Erik Østgård, guitarists Steinar Hagen & Jan Åge Slåtsveen, bassist Tore Larsen and drummer Øyvind Håkonsen changed their name to Return. The breakthrough came with the single “Sheila” which sold 1,000 copies. That song also helped Return to participate in the ‘Norgesmestre i Rock’, a competition of bands organized by NRK in 1985.That led to a record contract with Arco Records, which was run by journalists and bands promoters Nick Borgen and Arve Strømsæther. When the debut album ”To The Top” came out in 1987, guitarist Slåtsveen was no more in the band.”To The Top” spent four weeks on Norway’s chart album list, reaching the 14th place. Now signed by major label CBS, the band taped at Stockholm Recording, Sweden, the second RETURN album ”Attitudes”, which entered the charts in the second week of October 1988, reached all the way to fourth place, and stayed there for 25 weeks. “Change The Attitude” was released as a single, and was a radio hit in Scandinavia. The catchy “Bye Bye Johnny” was the second single and topped the Norsktoppen for five weeks. The group toured all the year and established a strong fan base.A string of successful albums followed in the next few years: Straight Down The Line (1989), Fourplay (1991) and V (1992). Return split in 2000, when the band came out with the compilation album The Best Of Return. That Greatest Hits CD became their first number one album.Since then, and still with original members Østgård, Larsen and Håkonsen, Return has played quite a lot, around 25 gigs a year. In 2015, they celebrated their 30th anniversary as recording artists, with the CD and DVD 30 Years Anniversary (Live At Stange).”Attitudes” is fluffy AOR, poppy and catchy as hell, a product of its time but for fans of the genre… the time best ever. This remastered reissue, as happens with all Norske Albumklassikere 80-tallet series, avoid brickwall and comes balanced and clear.

Album:

AOR Heaven Records has just remastered “V“ (Five), probably the best album of Norwegian melodic rockers RETURN.The record sounds way ‘more international’ than Return’s first four efforts, as it successfully combines the typical American stadium rock sound with a little bit of British hard in the vein of Whitesnake, and the band’s signature Scandinavian AOR style.Produced by expert Ole Evenrude and including backing vocals by Jorn Lande, this is a must listen for all Melodic Rock / AOR fans.Although never offered the same opportunities compatriots TNT and Stage Dolls enjoyed in venturing into the US and British markets, Norwegian melodic hard rock band Return nevertheless have carved their own place in the annals of rock history, with a quite illustrious career to boast of in their own right. The band’s fifth album, ‘V’, remastered / reissued courtesy of AOR Heaven, perfectly captures what Return were all about.Comprised of Knut Erik Østgård (v), Steinar Hagen (g), Tore Larsen (b) and Øyvind Håkonsen (d), Return were founded in the early ’80s combining various influences from punk, ska, disco, pop and hard rock drawing major inspiration from British bands such as Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Praying Mantis and The Police.By the mid ’80s there was certainly a very interesting music scene happening in Norway, too, with the likes of the aforementioned TNT, Stage Dolls and other emerging acts, including Da Vinci.Winning a band competition got Return a deal with ARCO records, eventually resulting in the debut ‘To The Top’ (1987) arousing interest with majors like CBS who signed them for the next three records,‘Attitudes’ (1988),’Straight Down The Line’ (1989) and ‘Fourplay’ (1991) leading the band to basically constantly tour from 1987 to 1994 and develop musically and form some kind of Return brotherhood. For ‘V’, with its slightly more international approach, the band followed their label managers to EMI Norway. Recordings took place during the summer of 1992 in Glen Studio in Stockholm and the mix in Studio Nova in Norway.Unfortunately, soon after grunge struck Norway, too, and after yet again some extensive touring, in 1994 Return decided to take a break which actually lead to a six year hiatus.Return’s, uh, return to action occurred in the year 2000 when a best of compilation sold a total of 120.000 copies!Being the strongest effort so far, Return still play a considerable amount of the songs from ‘V’ in their sets of their occasional live appearances.Outstanding tracks like “Take This Heart“ or “Ridin’ On A Rainbow“ would have been major hits back then in a world – without grunge in 1992, of course.Frontman Knut Erik Østgård has that classy Scandi touch, the songs are catchy and melodic, and the production is really big time.2020 is a year to celebrate. It is 40 years since four young guys met in a small rehearsal room and started to make great music together. This AOR Heaven re-issue – remastered by melodic rock specialist Chris Lyne – sounds amazing. Strictly limited to 1000 copies.
