Info:

Alcatrazz is an American heavy metal band formed in 1983 by Graham Bonnet, Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea. They are best known for their songs "Island In The Sun" and "God Blessed Video".The band's initial line-up consisted of former Rainbow frontman Graham Bonnet, young Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, who had recently left American band Steeler, Gary Shea and Jimmy Waldo from New England and Clive Burr of Iron Maiden fame. Burr was reportedly only in the band for a week, and left upon discovering the band was going to be based in the United States, as opposed to his native England. Burr was soon replaced by former Iron Butterfly drummer Jan Uvena, who had just left Alice Cooper's backing band. Shea dubbed the group "Alcatrazz". For the first album, the bulk of the material was written by Bonnet and Malmsteen, with Waldo contributing to several tracks. The band's debut album, No Parole From Rock 'N' Roll surfaced in late 1983 on Rocshire Records. Decent support was given by MTV to the lead single, Island In The Sun, which showed a heavy Rainbow influence. Despite the commercial nature of the song, it received little radio play. The album nonetheless spent 18 weeks on the Billboard charts and peaked at No. 128. A second video released in 1984 for Hiroshima Mon Amour became popular in Japan.Creative differences between Malmsteen and Bonnet surfaced while on tour. Due to this, and his admitted desire to begin a solo career, Malmsteen quit in 1984 and formed his own band, Rising Force, who signed with Polydor Records.Rochsire then put out Live Sentence, a concert recording from the recent tour of Japan. A live video concert was also produced. Malmsteen tried to prevent the release of the album but failed. A few Rainbow covers were included, including the classic Since You Been Gone. The album would reach No. 133 in the US., Waldo replaced Malmsteen with former Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, despite resistance from Bonnet, and the band signed with Capitol Records. The group worked on new material and then headlined another tour of Japan, which introduced Vai to the fans and allowed them to play new material from the upcoming album. A concert video was filmed from these dates. The band released Disturbing The Peace in the spring of 1985. The album was produced by Eddie Kramer who had worked with Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Triumph, among others. God Blessed Video was the first single and video, yet MTV barely played it. The album peaked at No. 145 and charted for 16 weeks. Alcatrazz, however, could never break out of their small following, and had to cut a tour short due to financial problems.Steve Vai left to join David Lee Roth's solo band in 1986. The split was on good terms, as it was an offer Vai could not refuse. He was replaced by guitarist Danny Johnson (ex-Axis, Rod Stewart, and Alice Cooper), who recorded what became Alcatrazz's final studio album, Dangerous Games, released in the fall of 1986. The album had covers of the Animals' classic It's My Life (one of the only rock-oriented tunes) and Marbles' Only One Woman. Bonnet had been a member of Marbles in the late 60's when they had this hit in the UK. The album failed to chart. Shortly afterward, Johnson also quit to join the band Private Life. Disheartened by an ever revolving door of guitarists, and dwindling album sales, they split up in 1987.In 1998 the Renaissance label issued The Best Of Alcatrazz, a look back at the band's brief career. God Blessed Video appeared in the 2002 videogame soundtrack Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, playing on fictional rock station V-Rock.Bonnet reformed his version of the band as Alcatrazz featuring Graham Bonnet with guitarist Howie Simon (Jeff Scott Soto Band, Talisman), drummer Glen Sobel (Impellitteri, Beautiful Creatures, Tony MacAlpine), and bassist Tim Luce and toured Japan in May and June 2007—sharing the headline with another ex-Rainbow vocalist, Joe Lynn Turner. Howie Simon revealed in a recent interview that it was his suggestion to bring back the Alcatrazz name.[1] They also headlined the BerkRock festival in Berkovitsa, Bulgaria in July 2008 and have played various West Coast US dates including support slots for Y&T.

Album:

Cherry Red / Hear No Evil are releasing ALCATRAZZ's "Dangerous Games Deluxe Edition", the band's third and final studio album (both previous presented here) fully digitally remastered and including a very rare and previously unreleased live recording from Long Island, captured in November 1986 on the Dangerous Games tour. After achieving worldwide recognition fronting Rainbow in 1980, Graham Bonnet returned to his solo career for 1981’s “Line-Up” (also available on this blog) followed by a very brief stint with The Michael Schenker Group for 1982’s Assault Attack, before forming Alcatrazz in 1983 with Swedish guitar maestro Yngwie J. Malmsteen.Alcatrazz released a total of three studio albums; No Parole From Rock ‘N’ Roll in 1983, Disturbing The Peace in 1985 where Malmsteen was replaced by former Frank Zappa alumni Steve Vai before he in turn left to join David Lee Roth, and be replaced by ex-Alice Cooper and Rick Derringer guitarist Danny Johnson for this 1986’s “Dangerous Games”.Capitol Records wanted Bonnet and Co. to incorporate outside songwriters for what would go on to become "Dangerous Games", but the band resisted and instead agreed to include, for the first time, a couple of covers. Therefore the album opens with a good, if unspectacular, version of The Animals "It's My Life", while also seeing the band beef up (a little anyway) "Only One Woman", a UK hit Bonnet had with The Marbles many years before. In truth neither really set the heather on fire, still leaving Johnson with the pressure of providing the bulk of the material. The title track, which the guitarist wrote single handedly, is undoubtedly a highlight, while his co-writes with Bonnet and keyboard player Jimmy Waldo on "Undercover" and the moody "The Witchwood" don't let the side down.Overall, the album moves in a more commercial direction than the two previous, without the flashy guitar pyrotechnics and focused in Johnson's deeper, bluesier melodic six-string style. This Deluxe Edition features a very rare and previously unreleased live recording from Long Island, one of the few shows Alcatrazz did before split.Included are unique, if rough and ready versions of Alcatrazz classics "Island In The Sun" and "God Blessed Video", as well as Rainbow hits "Since You Been Gone" and "All Night Long".If you've never heard Alcatrazz before, then start with the also recently reissued Vai infused Disturbing The Peace or the more Rainbow-esque Malmsteen led No Parole From Rock 'n Roll to really hear what all the fuss was about. However, "Dangerous Games" is better than many would have you believe, a good melodic hard rock album and does stand the test of time reasonably well.

Album:

Today Sept. 28, "Live In Japan 1984: The Complete Edition", the definitive version of ALCATRAZZ's legendary 1984 Japan tour is unveiled with fully restored and remastered sound, in a previously unreleased full concert form, featured at 0dayrox in exclusive.Alcatrazz featuring star vocalist Graham Bonnet (ex-Rainbow and The Michael Schenker Group) and the young guitar genius Yngwie J. Malmsteen toured Japan in early 1984, and the band's performance at the prestigious Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo on 28th January was released in Japan as a home video.During a thorough excavation of the vaults, the original 24 channel audio multitrack was miraculously discovered - remixes and digital remastering were made to recreate the sheer brilliance of the original live performance. You will find yourself in the very first row of Nakano Sun Plaza in 1984.The complete performance is here - from the opening frenzy of ‘Too Young To Die, Too Drunk To Live’, to ‘Island In The Sun’ and ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’ from Alcatrazz's debut album “No Parole From Rock 'n' Roll”.The band revisits Bonnet's repertoire from the Rainbow days including ‘All Night Long’, ‘Since You Been Gone’ and ‘Lost In Hollywood’, plus ‘Desert Song’ by The Michael Schenker Group and Graham's solo hit ‘Night Games’.And we witness the dawn of the new guitar god in the presence of the 20 year-old Yngwie J. Malmsteen. His guitar wizardry shines throughout, including his solo instrumentals ‘Evil Eye’ and ‘Coming Bach’.A excerpt of the show was released as the live album “Live Sentence”, with cuts and overdubs - now we get to experience the concert in its entirety. The sound quality is awesome, all defined instrumentation, a killer guitar sound - Yngwie fans rejoice - and Bonnet's vocals clear and powerful. This is a real find, having this concert complete, not cuts or overdubs, in a fully remastered audio is a must.

Album:

Formed in 1983, Alcatrazz became famous for its blend of melodic and progressive rock and for introducing guitar heroes Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai. Emerging in 1983 with "No Parole From Rock 'N' Roll", which featured the hit "Island In The Sun", the band continued building popularity in 1985 with sophomore effort "Disturbing The Peace", which contained the hit "God Blessed Video". The band issued one more studio album, 1986's "Dangerous Games", before ceasing operations the following year. The band regrouped and released the highly acclaimed "Born Innocent" in 2020, the first studio album containing all-new material since 1986.Both vintage and timeless, "V" treads the Alcatrazz textured territories of old, but with renewed vigor and verve. Whether it be the choral echoes sitting inside the storming tempest which is "Nightwatch", the staunch, speedy melodic metal of "Turn Of The Wheel" or the thick, bluesy chug of "House Of Lies", there is little doubt that this Alcatrazz is going full tilt with not one ounce of a shackle holding them back. "The new album brings us full circle from our original roots to a modern much heavier version of all things Alcatrazz in 2021", confirms Shea. "I feel great and I'm looking forward to the release of our new album with its heavy rocking metal sounds."Produced by Giles Lavery & Jimmy Waldo and mixed by Andy Haller (Elton John, Joe Cocker and System Of A Down), "V" also includes guest appearances from Saxon's Nigel Glockler (drums on "Guardian Angel" and "Blackheart"), Tank's Cliff Evans (bass on "Grace Of God") and Donnie Van Stavern of Riot (bass on "Guardian Angel", "Nightwatch" & "Target"), underscoring how perennially popular Alcatrazz's music remains with their peers. And just in case you're wondering what "V" stands for? Alcatrazz's fifth studio album of course ... but it also stands just as resolutely for victory, the victory that sees Alcatrazz 2021 stronger than ever despite all the odds.

Line-Up:

Doogie White - vocals

Bio:

Album:

Alcatrazz is determined to make up for lost time, roaring forwards at warp factor 10 to deliver "Take No Prisoners", the band's sixth studio album and the third in three years. Comprising of ten cracking, charismatic tracks, with each containing the unique fusion of classic American rock with the full grain hard rocking attitude of British metal, "Take No Prisoners" sees Alcatrazz energetically soaring and exploring melodic progression with road-warrior riffs. Lead single and video “Don’t Get Mad…Get Even” sees the band collaborating with the legendary Girlschool in a full-force, headbanging fist-pumper, while “Little Viper” rides a scything guitar into a thunderous, Dio-like assault. The band also show its calmer, more expansive side with the epic “Strangers”, but when an album finishes at the burn point of “Bring On The Rawk”, there can be no question that Alcatrazz’s collective boot is repeatedly kicking serious ass! Comprised of Doogie White (vocals), Joe Stump (guitars), Jimmy Waldo (keyboards), Gary Shea (bass) and Larry Paterson (drums) and with Giles Lavery and Waldo producing, "Take No Prisoners" is a loudly and proudly classic rock album which draws on the Alcatrazz traditions of technically excellent screaming guitars, thunderous rhythm and the sort of vocals and overall aura that evoke prime Dio and Rainbow. And, of course, a primed and fully tuned-up Alcatrazz, whose career is fast taking on Benjamin Button proportions. The Take No Prisoners tour should be a lot of fun!
