King when he was only 12 years old.In the last 13 years Bonamassa has put out 15 solo albums through his independent record label J&R Adventures, of which 11 have reached #1 on the Billboard Blues charts.Bonamassa has played alongside such artists as Stephen Stills, Eric Clapton, Blondie Chaplin, Foreigner, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks among others. His career highlights include performances at the Royal Albert Hall and a Grammy Award nomination in 2013. In addition to his music career, Joe Bonamassa runs a nonprofit organization called the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation, whose mission it is to further music education by funding scholarships and providing music education resources to schools in need.Bonamassa's most commonly recognized instruments are his 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standards. His extensive guitar collection is one of the best in the world.

Album:

Joe Bonamassa teams up with his perennial producer Kevin Shirley and drops on us Blues of Desperation which is another simply superb album to add to his impressive resume. Dare we say it might be his best to date? What an excellent year it is shaping up to be with the plethora of excellent blues rock releases thus far and it is only March. Both the blues purist and the hardcore rock fan can appreciate this blues album. There’s something here for everyone.Recorded in just five days in Nashville, Joe serves up 11 original tracks filled with his guitar mastery, backed by the dual drummers, Anton Fig and Greg Morrow, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra and Mark Douthit, and background singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae and Juanita Tippins. There is not a throw away track on this release. They are all great albeit in slightly different ways.Recorded primarily as power quartet with dual drummers there is no lack of rock driven swagger. Joe seals the deal right out of the station opening things up with some excellent slide guitar work over the chugging rhythm of “This Train.” Things take a decidedly more intense turn with the hard riff of “Mountain Climbing” where Joe delivers a scorcher of a solo. This should quickly become a mainstay of his live shows like previous hits “Sloe Gin” and “The Ballad of John Henry.” Title track “Blues of Desperation, along with “How Deep This River Runs” and “Distant Lonesome Train” provides even more of this excellent heavy ended rhythm section for Joe to stretch out over. “You Left Me Nothing but the Bill and The Blues” is a foot stomper that should have festival goers out of their seats when they aren’t staring in wonder at Joe’s two separate solos.“No Good Place For The Lonely” is a heavy slow blues that incorporates some orchestral strings that would have been better off handled by Reese Wynans’ Hammond organ. Regardless, Joe creates a distorted sliding riff that creates the undertow for this song that will suck you in. The first single off this is “Drive” with it is laid back groove it leads the collection of tracks that are an effective contrast to the hard edge of rest of the album. Another contrasting number is the acoustic and soulful “Valley Runs Low.” “Livin’ Easy” evokes a walk down Maxwell Street with its Chicago style piano, horns and acoustic groove. Ending this ride is the slow horn laden blues “What I’ve Known For A Very Long Time.”With Blues of Desperation, Joe delivers more of his trademark sound with some surprises while pushing the envelope of what the blues in this modern age can be.

His extensive guitar collection is one of the best in the world.

Beth Hart (born January 24, 1972) is an American singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California, United States. She rose to fame with the release of her 1999 single "LA Song (Out of This Town)" from her second album Screamin' for My Supper. The single was a number one hit in New Zealand, as well as reaching top 5 on the US Adult Contemporary and number 7 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 Chart. The song also aired during Episode 17 of the 10th and final season of Beverly Hills, 90210.Beth Hart also delivered music to the end-scene of the last episode of Californication season 6, with "My California",Subsequent albums namely Seesaw and Live In Amsterdam by Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, achieved number 1 status on the Billboard Blues Album Chart. Hart's release Bang Bang Boom Boom rose to number 3 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart, as well as the album Don't Explain by Hart and Bonamassa. The album Seesaw rose to number 8 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart. Hart has had two number 1 singles in Denmark "As Good As It Gets" and "Learning To Live", as well a platinum selling album, Leave The Light On.Hart's first album with Bonamassa, Don't Explain, went gold in The Netherlands. In 2014 Hart was nominated for a Grammy Award for Seesaw and she was also nominated for a Blues Music Award in the category 'Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist'.

Album:

Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa fans need wait only a little while longer for their third studio album Black Coffee. For those who have followed the grammy nominated duo for Don’t Explain and Seesaw, Black Coffee’s highly anticipated January 26th release date will seem much farther away than a number of days.Multiple articles could be written on the first song, “Give It Everything You Got,” alone. It opens with Bonamassa’s distorted heavy rock guitar that wails with a powerful and confident intensity. This is immediately followed by a drum fill that introduces a trumpet section. Both of these sections match Bonamassa’s intensity, and yet do not step on the guitar line in any way. The three high energy lines work together, excite the listener, and manage to never overwhelm. All of this takes place in the few seconds before Hart’s powerhouse vocals enter and define the sound that is to come. It is immediately clear that Hart’s voice is not ordinary. There are so many wonderful mixes of Janis Joplin and Nina Simone in her warm, rich, colorful voice, and yet even comparisons to great singers do not accurately portray the unique quality. Hart’s voice is of course technically impressive. Her range and skill level are notable, but the tones that she is able to achieve, both soft and gritty, are all her own.“Give It Everything You Got” breaks from these haunting vocals to a very impressive and still supportive guitar bridge. The low range, thick, distorted guitar rests gracefully on top of a grooving and beautiful horn section. Bonamassa’s soul comes through every quick and skillfully played note in this section.“Lullaby of the Leaves” is a surprising, exciting, but not jarring change in this album. Of all of the unique covers on this album, this song in particular is imagined by the duo in an unimaginable way. The creativity brought into this well known tune is done so purely, that one could think that Hart and Bonamassa had only ever read the sheet music to the tune before playing. Even so, the song remains true to the most beautiful elements of the song. It does not sacrifice the songwriting for the sake of arbitrary twists. Any decoration or melodic change is done deliberately and with purpose. Bonamassa opens up the bridge with the guitar, and raises the intensity in such a natural way. He gives the song the push you didn’t know it needed, and takes it to another place. Not a single song on Black Coffee is a let down. There is something special and worth listening to on every single track. The way that “Joy” stands out among so many strong songs is a great feat. The opening lines are both rough and with a strong sense of captivating control. Despite the high energy, the level of control makes the listener feel at ease and excited simultaneously. As satisfied as you can be by the groove alone, Bonamassa comes in with Hendrix like phrasing and sensibility, giving the listener an even greater sense of ease that is made possible by nostalgic guitar lines. The title track “Black Coffee” is a masterpiece in which Hart wows a little bit more with each passing phrase. The sparsity of certain melodic lines make the next coming line all the more anticipated, and Hart doesn’t disappoint. It’s thrilling to hear effortless vocal runs with believable grit and emotion. Hart could say “Black Coffee” over and over again in the same exact way and it would be exciting each time, however Hart’s slight variations serve to further a narrative more and more with just two words.Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa have created an album in which all of the parts are completely working together and are in service of one another. Even if they weren’t masters of their particular crafts in the way that they are, the album would be a hit from sheer collaboration and communication alone. Separately these musicians are gifted, but together, they really make something special.

His extensive guitar collection is one of the best in the world.

Album:

Joe Bonamassa is not one to rest on his accomplishments. The twice Grammy-nominated blues rocker is always pushing the envelope on what is considered blues and blues-inspired rock. His 13th solo studio album Redemption will be released on September 21st on his own J&R Adventures record label.Redemption features 12 new songs including the title track which rock and roll icon Dion DiMucci lends a hand on. They are the result of an awaking and rebirth that Bonamassa is in the midst of. He explains, “I’m going through some other stuff in my life I didn’t expect to be going through. It’s a rising, it’s contrition, it’s acceptance, it’s everything. It’s painful, but knowing that there’s a rising coming.”Also appearing on the album are some of Nashville’s best and brightest including ubiquitous producer and drummer Tom Hambridge, James House, Gary Nicholson, and the aforementioned Dion DiMucci. Once again Bonamassa is working with producer Kevin Shirley who says, “From a Producer’s perspective, this is far and away the most challenging and diverse album that Joe has ever made.”Contributing to the anticipation of this release and the album’s quality are the exciting musicians that bring their talents to bear here. Drummer Anton Fig (David Letterman Band), bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg and Paulie Cerra, harmony vocalist Gary Pinto, and background singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae, Juanita Tippins. Producer Kevin Shirley introduced two additional guitar players, Kenny Greenberg and Doug Lancio. Bonamassa says, “It was interesting, because having two extra guitar players involved, allowed me to play a certain way.”The album was recorded in several studios including The Cave Australia, Studio At The Palms, Las Vegas NV, Criteria Hit Factory, Miami FL, Addiction Sound Studios, Nashville TN and Blackbird Studios, also in Nashville. The music starts with a tip of the hat to Led Zeppelin on “Evil Mama,” and features aspects of rockabilly influenced boogie with “King Bee Shakedown,” Black Country Communion echoes on “Molly-O,” and a great hard driving highway song “Deep In The Blues Again.” Bonamassa says that “Self-Inflicted Wounds” is his best songwriting yet. On “Pick Up The Pieces” he channels Tom Waits, and on “The Ghost of Macon Jones” he shares vocals with country singer Jamey Johnson, another Nashville artist. On “Just Cos You Can Don‘t Mean You Should” Bonamassa recalls the intensity and heart that made Gary Moore so memorable, and “I‘ve Got Some Mind Over What Matters” sees him taking a look at his troubles. “Stronger Now In Broken Places” has this modern master take the music all the way down to the bone with just vocals and acoustic guitar, and then he closes the album with a winning blues number, “Love Is A Gamble.”There is a resounding theme of redemption and salvation on the album, but also very much a sense of strength and empowerment. “We all need to be redeemed at some point in our lives. It’s this yearning to redeem yourself after just this tremendous loss and this tremendous feeling of pain,” explains Bonamassa.Bonamassa is at his ultimate creative peak with Redemption, which follows the recent release of his last live masterpiece, British Blues Explosion Live, that debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart and marked his 20th #1 album. Bonamassa’s fire is unstoppable both in the studio and live on the road. Joe will also be performing live on Tour this Summer and Fall in North America as he debuts new tracks from Redemption as part of his live set.

His extensive guitar collection is one of the best in the world.

Album:

Guitar master JOE BONAMASSA extends his already-considerable body of work with a new album, ”Royal Tea”, that comes down October 23rd, 2020 via Provogue/ Mascot Label Group. The record is inspired by Joe’s British blues/rock heroes Jeff Beck, John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and Cream and was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in England. ”Royal Tea brings” Bonamassa full-circle to the type of British blues he discovered as a kid in his father’s record collection. The ten new originals on ”Royal Tea” were co-written by Bonamassa and important British artists including former WHITESNAKE guitarist BERNIE MARSDEN, ex-Cream lyricist Pete Brown, and national-treasure piano man Jools Holland. From the orchestral intro to the record’s first song, “When One Door Opens,” Bonamassa absolutely nails the classic 70s British blues/rock vibe he’s chasing. Big, dirty riffs combine with more delicate, lyrical passages and strong melodies to create an artful and engaging listening experience. His guitar tones are full of old-school overdrive and fit the track perfectly. Joe clearly understands this style from the inside out and makes it his own without turning it into something it shouldn’t be. British blues interpreters were how Joe initially discovered blues music and he wears their legacies well. The title track, “Royal Tea,” is a gritty, slower blues that was inspired by a segment on Good Morning Britain about Harry and Meghan’s departure from palace life. Joe’s message is that if the Royal fable plays out like the song, it will concretely prove that the blues is a universal language that reaches beyond cultural, economic and racial differences and resides in the human soul. His playing is strident and full of sinew here and his vocals are emotional and convincing.“Why Does It Take So Long To Say Goodbye” is Bonamassa’s epic ballad of the record and the first single taken from it. Although he’s known for his blazing guitar chops, Joe’s more restrained and melodic playing at the front of this track is some of his best work from these sessions. He does do some ripping in the more energetic middle section but his Slowhand moments definitely steal this show. “Savannah” is an acoustic-based cut with a hint of gospel to it that channels a gently romantic mood and again showcases Joe’s mellow side. He takes to this more singer-songwriter material quite nicely and should do more of it.“High Class Girl” is a lowdown blues cut built on the “Help Me/Green Onions” groove that’s sweet and authentic. The band swings hard and gives Joe plenty of space to rage and roar. It’s the kind of pub-shaking track that sent the blues back to America in the 60s and will make you want to get loud with it. Royal Tea closes with “Lonely Boy,” a horn-soaked jump blues rave-up that will send you off into the night in fine fashion and features some of Joe’s tastiest playing on the album. Bonamassa is a huge talent and a true believer in the power and relevance of this thing of ours. His British inflection on Royal Tea is a smashing success that will take you across the pond in a hurry.

Album:

A notable release for many different reasons, JOE BONAMASSA’s latest offering, ”Now Serving: Royal Tea Live From The Ryman”, is set for release June 11th via Provogue / Mascot Label Group. The Ryman Auditorium occupies a special place in music history. A former home of the Grand Ole Opry, where Elvis Presley once walked the stage, the historic, hundred-year-old building has stolen the metaphorical hearts of artists thanks to its unique atmosphere and unrivalled acoustics. For Bonamassa’s concert, recorded during the pandemic, the Ryman was populated with life-size cardboard cut-outs of fans, and broadcast across the globe. What we get here, apart from the expected polished and heartfelt performance, are twelve live tracks, including unreleased versions of songs from Bonamassa’s Royal Tea album. This is an inspired and inspiring set. It can’t have been easy playing to an empty room, but clearly the band gave it their all, reaching out to the hundreds of thousands of fans who they knew were watching around the world.Says Bonamassa, “We played as good as we could in front of those 1700 cardboard cut outs of your faces and tried to imagine you there.” With an artist as dedicated and earnest as Bonamassa, you know that he means it.The aptly-titled “When One Door Opens” starts the show, a grand, unwinding and orchestral-minded piece which showcases the scope and ambition of Bonamassa’s song-writing and arranging skills. He has never been one to take the easy route, ever reaching for the skies. With this swooping, soaring track, shot full of aching pathos and eerie beauty, you can’t help but be impressed. As light-footed and hard-hitting as Muhammad Ali at his peak, “When One Door Opens” is in many ways the perfect representation of Bonamassa – earthy and rootsy on the one hand, reaching for stratospheric heights on the other.Vocally, Bonamassa is as strong as ever, muscular and affecting, with a smoothness of delivery which belies his hard-hitting power. Through it all runs that effortlessly weighty guitar sound which has made him famous. The secret behind the efficacy of both, lies in Bonamassa’s ability to be both fluid and weighty at once. His guitar is always mesmerizing, hefty and enjoyable, his vocals likewise. The rest of the set easily lives up to its promise. The title-track itself thumps and struts, growls and menaces. Plenty of blues/rock muscle fires up a heady mix. You can hear the rich, layered magic of classic Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix here, married to the easy musical invention of The Beatles and the sheer power of Led Zeppelin.Bonamassa’s guitar sings and sweeps, as mercurial as ever.“Why Does It Take So Long” starts off with delicate shimmering percussion before launching into an epic, questing blues, which veers from majestic might to fragile tenderness. “Beyond The Silence” whispers, stirs and echoes, unfurling into a dusty, highly affecting ballad. Old-West Americana tumbles and moans, drums skip and light up the venue.Listening to these tracks, it’s not hard to understand why Bonamassa has amassed such a large and loyal fan base. Not only is he an incredible talent, he is an artist who wears his heart on his sleeve. When he performs, he is playing for those listening, not for himself. This ethos shines through every note here, making Now Serving: Royal Tea Live From The Ryman a record well deserving of your time.

Album:

Joe Bonamassa has spent the last few studio albums “being Joe Bonamassa” – consolidating and redefining his own style. And doing it very well, it must be said. But now something seems to have snapped: he has gone rogue. It’s hard to say what could have caused this – the pandemic that curtailed his relentless gigging schedule; the speedy, claustrophobic atmosphere of New York, where the album was recorded; having to hook up with long-time producer Kevin Shirley, who was trapped in Australia.Or maybe a feeling that his previous studio album, Royal Tea, was bringing him full circle and that he needed to jump before he started repeating himself. There was a hint of this on Bonamassa’s last CD/DVD, Royal Tea Live At The Ryman, when he showcased the very English-made album (to an audience of cardboard cut-outs), rounding off with a version of Jethro Tull’s A New Day Yesterday that he first recorded two decades earlier.Whatever, he has made the leap and there’s a sense that not too much pre-planning went into this album. Once he’d mapped out the basic structure of a song he was happy to press ‘Record’ and see where it took him. This requires a certain confidence of course, but Bonamassa is not short of that these days. There is, however, an underlying theme to the album to give it guidance and direction – time. Time passed, time passing and time left.On the raw, muscular opening Notches it’s the ‘notches on my walking cane’ as Bonamassa’s guitar sends out a series of flares from the powerful blues boogie that propels the song. On the slow, surging The Heart That Never Waits that follows, it’s ‘Time is the healer that rescued me’.On the album’s title track with its cataclysmic opening and gentle build-up to the big chorus, the song just keeps expanding like an exploding galaxy and Bonamassa thrashes around as if he’s overwhelmed by the whole concept of time. It’s not until the album’s mid point on Mind’s Eye that Bonamassa takes a moment to reflect, backed by a haunting guitar riff. But he can’t hold back for long and he’s soon rattling the walls again. From then on, it’s a headlong rush to the final slow, melodic Known Unknowns, where his angst drains into an acceptance that he will never beat the ticking of the clock. It was a journey he had to make and now he’ll have to follow it.

Album:

Joe Bonamassa’s New Live Album Tales of Time will be released by J&R Adventures and Provogue/Mascot Label Group on April 14, 2023. The album was recorded in its entirety over two nights at Colorado’s “Red Rocks Amphitheater” and is available as a CD/DVD, CD/Blu-Ray and a 3LP 180 gram Vinyl album set. Bonamassa performed his most recent 2021album Time Clocks in its entirety along with a half dozen older numbers like “Dust Bowl” and “Mountain Time,” and others for the DVD and Vinyl album. The CD contains ten cuts but like the DVD and vinyl “Pilgrimage” and “Hanging on a Loser” from Time Clocks are replaced with “Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should” and “Evil Mama.”The band is Bonamassa’s most recent touring band comprised of Reese Wynans – Keyboards, Mahalia Barnes – Vocals and Percussion, Lemar Carter – Drums and Percussion, Calvin Turner – Bass Guitar, Jade MacRae – Vocals and Percussion, Dannielle DeAndrea – Vocals and Percussion as well as Josh Smith – Guitar. There is a short 55 second intro titled “Dawn of Time” prior to the opening cut “Notches” which is nearly nine minutes long and was co-written with Kevin Shirley and Charlie Starr from “Blackberry Smoke. It kicks the show off with a barnburner from driving drums to screaming guitar peals. “The Heart That Never Waits” follows and is a bluesy excursion that is reminiscent of Stevie Ray and was co-written with James House. “Curtain Call” is another lengthy hard driving cut with excellent cinematography recording the performance. In 2022 a video was released of “Mind’s Eye” which was co-written with James House and contains more of the album’s stellar guitar work.Once again a video of “Questions And Answers” was released in 2022 before the current project. It was co-written by James House and Kevin Shirley with a repetitive beat and almost Latin sound between guitar peals. “The Loyal Kind” was co-written with Bernie Marsden and has a hard rock sound. A video of “Known Unknowns” was released in 2023 that was an excerpt from the DVD recorded at “Red Rocks” as an advance sample from the entire project that was co-written by Bonamassa and Alyssa Bonagura. “Time Clocks” was the title track from the 2021 album and co-written by Bonamassa and Kevin Shirley as an exercise in pushing the envelope. “Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should” gives Wynans a chance to shine before Bonamassa shreds his fret board to a driving beat. The last cut on the CD is “Evil Mama” another co-write with Tom Hambridge and Shirley that is a jam to high heaven followed by Bonamassa’s scalding pyrotechnic guitar pealsAs already mentioned the DVD and vinyl had a half dozen additional cuts ranging from the short intro and conclusion to standards like “Mountain Time,” “Dust Bowl,” “The Ballad of John Henry” and a cover of Gary Moore’s “Midnight Blues.” After attending a thousand live shows over the past 60 years I’ve learned to appreciate ambience but with the pandemic came live internet concerts. No matter how well it is filmed and the sound is reproduced, watching a show from a screen will never hold a candle to the live show. However, this is as good as it gets if you couldn’t be there, like “Woodstock.”

Line-Up:

Anton Fig (drums)

Album:

Twenty years since the release of his best-selling album Blues Deluxe, which celebrated “the year of the blues” with unforgettable reinterpretations of classic tracks, JOE BONAMASSA is taking stock of how far he and the genre have come with the upcoming release of ”Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2”.Featuring 2 new originals and 8 new covers of some of the most influential names in the blues, Bonamassa returns to his roots and gives new life to the classic tracks that have informed his own artistry. One of the original tracks is “Hope You Realize It (Goodbye Again),” a song Bonamassa wrote with Tom Hambridge. The track has a deep funk groove that Bonamassa has attributed to his decision to give it “a real Tower of Power treatment.” It’s fast and smooth, with emphatic drums and an exciting mid-song Bonamassa solo.
