Album:

'Lugnet' is a Swedish word and it means 'serenity'. And I must say that the debut album of Lugnet, the Swedish band, has this ease in each of the eight tracks.Lugnet is Roger Solander (v) Marcus Holten (g), Danne Jansson (g), Lennart Zethzon (b) and Fredrik Jansson(d). The five guys get support on the record by Bruno Erminero who added the warm hammond sound to each of the tasty tracks. The five piece plays classic rock that is deeply rooted in the late seventies and early eighties. I would compare their sound with Rainbow during the "Long Live Rock & Roll" days. And even though Blackmore, Dio and Co. played in another league I was impressed by "Lugnet", the debut of the Tungelsta based band.The first thing that stands out is the voice of singer Solander. This man sounds like a mixture of Dio, Coverdale and Tony Martin. The way he interprets Lugnet's tunes is impressive. It makes fun to listen to this guy. But also each of the track itself sound pretty cool. Lugnet could gain already some attention in their homeland and listening to the debut also explains the 'why'. Songs like the faster "Vein" or the galloping "In the Still of the Water" are all in one - catchy and hard. Heavy downtuned guitars meet melodic vocallines embedded in organic hammond sound waves. The guys have a sense for good hooklines and I must say that each of the songs is a small highlight for classic rock fans.Maybe Lugnet might not re-invent the wheel, but they are hungy for rock'n'roll and they have the right attitude. This is worth a lot.

If ‘lugnet’ means ‘tranquillity’ in Swedish, then this couldn’t be further removed from the truth! Stoked and rippling in 70s hard rock and classic rock glory, it’s bands like Lugnet who not only capture the sound of that era authentically, but rather than retro hashing it, have brought it into modernity and actually paved a future for it. “Nightwalker” has it all in bunches! From the incredible compositions to the sheer range of 70s styles on show here – including stoner, blues rock and doom – it’s all performed superbly thanks to the talented musicianship of the band themselves. From new singer Johan Fahlbergs (Jaded Heart) whose immense power and range truly needs to be heard to the rich, dexterous twin guitars of Marcus ‘Mackan’ Holten and Matti Norling who have honed to perfection all their riffs, licks, melodies and solos to not just reflect the 70s in fine style, but also ensure they’re also hugely moving and naturally capturing of both the mind and body. Completing this elite team is the extraordinary driving rhythm section of bass player Lennart ‘Z’ Zethzon (Badge) and drummer Fredrik Jansson (Angel Witch, ex Witchcraft). Together, they make this sophomore truly magical. From the fast beat and massive cowbell of opener ‘Die For You’, the gritty guitars go to work immediately while Fahlbergs voice – and occasional scream – brings nothing short of epic power to the already pulsating energy of this number before the swashbuckling guitars possess you into instant headbanging mode! With a massive Led Zepp rocking groove on ‘Cockroach’ that hits you flush in the nuts and completed by proto heavy metal melodies, wailing boogie, wild solos and Fahlbergs voice sounding like he’s already strutting the stage of some gargantuan stadium to the hero worship of the masses – and why not when you’re this good – expect nothing less than ‘rock star’ stamped across your loins after this one ha ha. Closing with ‘Kill Us All’ whose initial folky melancholia evolves darkly into doom complemented so exquisitely by Fahlbergs clean, soaring highs, the twin guitars have just the right measure of fuzz when they’re not oozing beautiful melodies, not forgetting Zethzon’s far out bass rumblings. Pure musical bliss, prepare for the might of Lugnet and absolutely no tranquillity.

Tales From the Great Beyond is the third studio album by Swedish 70’s inspired hard rock and heavy metal band Lugnet, whose fabulous lineup consists of Johan Fahlberg on lead vocals (Jaded Heart, Insania), Lennart “Z” Zethzon on bass guitars (Clifftones), Matti Norlin on guitars (Badge, Urban Clash), Fredrik Jansson-Punkka on drums (Angel Witch, Wooden Fields), and Micke Linder also on guitars.The charismatic and energetic heavy rockers are back after a very positively acclaimed sophomore album Nightwalker (2019) and this time the riffs, the bass lines, the vocals, and the drumming are even better, bigger, and catchier. The influences are very notable, lot of early Purple and Sabbath, a little of Judas Priest here, some early Van Halen over there, a pinch of Witchcraft, and some DIO era Rainbow too, nothing can go wrong when you blend all these together… the result is quite a tasty shake!“Still a Sinner” opens the album and the love at first listen is immediate, those first chords already provide a glimpse of all the goodness that will come after. The guitar work is fantastic, heavy, and epic, vocals sound like a mix of Gillan, Lee Roth, Coverdale, and Ronnie, with a very efficient range and impressive high pitch screaming that will appeal to every classic hard rock and heavy metal fan. “In Harvest Time” kicks off with a doomy vibe and a guitar soloing that rapidly evolves into a fast & furious Uriah Heep-style heavy rocker, cool song. With “Another World” the band delivers the first mini epic song of the album, at first an atmosphere that’s more on the sludgy side of metal, with a couple of minutes in the middle that somehow reminds me of Kill The King (Rainbow) both in its speed and rhythmic performance… and then, towards the end, some Sabbath flares from the "Disturbing the Priest" era, a song that I see becoming a classic in the band’s catalog for years to come. “Out of My System” could easily be a song taken from VHII or Fair Warning, a good old school rocker with great hooks and melodies, plus the phenomenal guitar work once again. “Svarv” is a beautiful instrumental track where neoclassical guitars get smartly entangled (and some other cool instruments too!) to deliver a moment of pause, peace, and medieval happiness to the experience. Modern 70’s inspired hard rock return with “Eaten Alive”, that same vintage mood that younger Finnish rockers Vintage Caravan accomplish so well, a pristine blend of influences that takes us back to classic heavy rock territory, crafted and executed in the 2020’s with that pungent guitar tonality that becomes hypnotic with time, short but to the point! “Pale Design” is another great rocker with pounding bass lines and fast drumming, a combination tighter as they can get, heavy guitar soloing and vocals that scrape grandiosity, with some similarities to those storm-chasing screams from the "Pictures of Home" era of DP, cool and catchy stuff. The heaviest and grooviest moment of the album comes with “I Can’t Wait” in the form of a straight proto metal output, very Sabbath sounding thanks to the exquisite guitar riffing and licking with simple lyrics that are efficiently used and managed to accompany the music, nothing else, just enough to make it work. “Black Sails” is the second mini epic song clocking slightly over 8 minutes, dark soundscape effects lead the way for more stoner-doom sounding atmosphere that resembles Legend by Witchcraft, heavy, immense, and raw. Can’t say enough about the great guitar work by both Norlin and Linder, is a highlight in almost every song of the album. “Tåsjö Kyrkmarsch” closes the album in an oddly but gratifying way… three plus minutes of melodic organs intricately playing together to announce the end… unique!
