Bio:

‘A RISING FORCE’ is an all original Minnesota rock act featuring Mark Westlund - Lead Vocals, Guitar Brian Lorenson - Bass, Vocals, Lane Allen - Drums, Vocals, Percussion Leni DiMancari- Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards. The band collectively have had multiple albums released, MMA nominations & awards, along with national and international touring backgrounds. No strangers to the recording industry, guitarist Leni DiMancari (founding member of Hurricane Alice who changed their name to Hericane Alice for Atlantic Records) has recorded with members of Y&T, Le Mans, Cacophony, and Montrose.Bass player Brian Lorenson and drummer Lane Allen were members of Dare Force. DiMancari, Allen, and Lorenson were all part of the last incarnation of the band prior to ‘A RISING FORCE’.Their motto is “Old School Rock with a New World Attitude” and the album definitely shows it on every track of the debut of ‘A RISING FORCE’. The music is guitar-driven commercial hard rock combined with 4-part harmonies, and all fronted by an arena rock lead vocalist. The songs are all real-life experiences and stories about life, love, loss, heartache, and the world around us.

Album:

A Rising Force brings together several seasoned Minnesota musicians in a new band. They include guitarist Leni DiMancari, who was an original member of Hericane Alice but is better known, at least to me, as the man who assembles the supporting line up of local and national bands for the legendary Moondance Jam festival and plays in more than one himself. The majority of those are covers acts but A Rising Force play almost entirely new material. The title track makes a striking opening, albeit a slightly misleading one- with a dark and sinister riff and drumbeat and chant of ‘hey hey’, briefly it threatens to be something Marilyn Manson might have performed, but it develops into a reassuringly old school heavy rocker with guitar solos and singer Mark Westlund proving he can carry a tune and sounding a little like Mr Big’s Eric Martin. On ‘Love and War’, which is a little more restrained, the vocal comparison that sprung to mind was Tesla’s Jeff Keith and indeed the sound on the latter’s more contemporary mid-2000s comeback ‘Into the Now‘ is as good a reference point as any for the band.‘Crushed’ though is more AC/DC ish both in its riffery and its ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and ‘Walk All Over You’ lyrics. But on ‘Black Eyed Suzy’ Leni’s guitar sound even has a George Lynch vice, albeit the drier sound of Lynch Mob rather than the sheen of Dokken.‘Yesterdaze Hell’, with excerpts from various presidents including Nixon and Reagan (his infamous ‘we begin bombing Russia in five minutes’ gaffe) boasts a fine, intricate guitar solo alongside its lyrical message. The tough rhythm section of Brian Lorenson and Lane Allen can be easily picked out through the production. If there is a criticism, it would be that most of the songs, though heavy, are a little dry and mid-paced, though ‘War Machine’ is a welcome faster change of pace, Mark’s vocals soaring and a gang-like chant of ‘Rise’.There is a solitary cover of Warrant’s ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ which is faithfully executed, though it would have been nice to hear more original material especially given a relatively short running time. The chunky, almost NWOBHM-esque chord progressions of ‘Retribution’ that close the album are the last in a series of killer riffs that punctuate the album.I sense- at least judging by looking at the festival line-ups stuck in an endless cycle of repeat- that it is harder for a new act in America to break through into a moribund scene dominated by the same established interests. However this accomplished slice of honest to goodness, traditional American hard rock with the odd modern twist has a good a chance as any.

Album:

A Rising Force is set to release their second full-length studio album “Eclipse” On June 3rd 2022, fresh off the tail of their previous album “Undertow”.The new album contains 10 new tracks, featuring the first single “Believe”.“When we were in pre-production for the album, we decided to go to Drop C tuning on “Believe” and add 4 different guitar parts on it to give it a very heavy rhythm,” says guitarist Leni DiMancari. “When it came time to write the story boards for the video, our production lead Mike Voegele and I took a far left turn from what the song was written about with the story line. It initially went from a song about the rise and fall of a televangelist to a scary journey into tarot, Ouija , the occult, with an ending that will floor you. It’s like watching a scary paranormal series on the travel channel and then having it come to life in front of you, with a surprise ending. And the other band members are excited about the new video, as well: David Reed Watson: “I’ve always been drawn to the darker aspects of psychology and what makes people tick. This video exemplifies that, and my fascination with the tarot.” Lane Allen: “I loved the overall look of the band and shots in the video. It reminds me of early Van Halen” Billy Schlump “Outstanding video. Very well done and put together. It draws the viewer in and locks you in until the very end.” Brian Lorenson: “Disturbingly creepy video with a great story line and a great song along with it.” The band recorded basic tracks in March of this year at Winterland Studios, then returned to Logic Studios for production and engineering by Brian Bart, who co-produced the first album with DiMancari.“We worked in pre-production for 6 months to fine tune this record. The band wanted it to feel more current than the last one, yet still be commercially heavy. We ‘Believe’ we have that in this one.” Leni DiMancari Additional vocals were recorded at lead vocalist David Reed Watson’s Kundalini studio and mastered at Logic Recording and Programming.“The second album is always harder to do, and there’s a little pressure on you to try to out-do the last one.” says guitarist Leni DiMancari. “We started writing the new album within weeks of finishing the first one, while in the middle of a pandemic. This album is a lot heavier than the last one, and we are really proud of how it turned out.”
