Bio:

Hit The Ground Runnin' is a AOR/Rock group founded in 1985 in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Originally under the name Free Delivery; the original lineup consisted of Paul Piccari (Bass), Alan Augunas (Guitar), Bert Marks (Drums), Blair Rumsey (Vocals) Steve Cocchi (Keyboards) and Rob Knauss (Keyboards).Jimmy Katone (Sanctuary, Escape) replaced Bert Marks in mid 1985 to round up the early lineup. The band with their own original material "Bad Reputation", "Rock N Roll Wrestling Connection", "Wam Bam Body Slam" and "Rockin' Again" won the WQIQ "Q Music Battle Competition" for a consecutive record of 15 times from June 24th to October 28th 1985. Jimmy Katone replaced Burt On Drums and Steve Coochi left in late 1985 and the band would resume as a quintet. In 1986 they were discovered by and introduced to Dan McKeown, a local Philadelphia entertainment TV and music producer, and founder of Power Up records worked with the band on some early material that would eventually translate to a production deal with Nise Productions and regular appearances on the show "Dancin' On Air" and "Dance Party USA" from 1986-1991. The band under a new name "Hit The Ground Runnin'" would get a release in 1989 on new BMG affiliated startup Autograph records entitled "Sudden Impact". The band also made a music video for the lead single "Over and Over". The band also performed at the 1989 Monterey Music Pop Festival with Jeff Healey, Billy Preston and War. . A second release slated for 1991 was shelved and eventually released in 2000 under Smash Records. A third release entitled HGR was released in 2007. Hit The Ground Runnin' has opened up for Blue Oyster Cult, Donny Osmond, Gorky Park, Cinderella, Aldo Nova, Blue Murder, Gorky Park, Britny Fox, Bricklin, and Heaven's Edge.

Album:

AOR Heaven Records has just released a stupendous 2-CD pack: Philadelphia based HIT THE GROUND RUNNIN’ 1989 album ‘Sudden Impact’ not only fully remastered, but adding a bonus disc and 9 previously unreleased tracks. The band made an arrangement with a small Canadian recording label, and “Sudden Impact” was released in very limited quantities. Musically, the band play clean, polished melodic rock / AOR with that magic sound from the era.HIT THE GROUND RUNNIN’ and this album holds the title as being the most sought after indie CD at eBay with a copy scoring $1950.52 and the status of the ‘Holy Grail’ of all indie AOR and melodic rock releases. Collectors of the genre have, especially over the last twenty five years, fought and outbid each other on eBay for the privilege of owning a copy. Now you have the chance to finally get ”Sudden Impact [AOR Heaven Remastered + 9 track Bonus Disc]”, a wonderful melodic album, a Limited Edition 500-copies only, so hurry up…Tracks like ‘Magic’ smell some Loverboy, and Blair Ramsey’s vocal color reminds me of Kevin Cronin, so the REO Speedwagon comparison is accurate as well. There’s a strong guitar work as on all songs on the CD, including quite imaginative and effective solos.‘Moment To Moment’ recalls Starship, ‘Slow Motion’ some Scandal, and ‘Don’t You Look Back’ has a that pristine Canadian sound from the era. ‘Oh No!’ is driven by stinging rhythm guitars and has fine harmony vocal arrangements, while the AOR synths of ‘An Original’ – a favorite – bring to mind Honeymoon Suite.More poppy, power poppy I’d say is ‘Too Late’, with a touch of The Outfield, then ‘While It Lasted’ is a midtempo semi-ballad, again with very good harmony arrangements.Unfortunately this is the last CD release by AOR Heaven Records, they are dismantling the label. But what a great way to say goodbye to business… “Sudden Impact [AOR Heaven Remastered + 9 track Bonus Disc]” is collectible piece of 80s AOR / Melodic Rock.

Album:

While the band is working on a new record, their current label Pride & Joy Music is re-releasing “Control Yourself“, the second album from melodic rockers HIT THE GROUND RUNNIN’. Following the band’s acclaimed debut and cult LP “Sudden Impact” (1989), this sophomore album was originally recorded between 1990 and 1991 before being shelved and then eventually finding distribution with Smash Records back in 2001.Feeling there was a demand over time, Pride & Joy Music updated the release remastered, with new cover art and 3 unreleased songs as bonus tracks. ”Control Yourself” has been remastered for a more crisp, bright sound. The melodic rock played by the six-piece is pretty much like stuff from the typical Eighties action movies soundtracks plus a strong AOR pulse, anthemic punch similar to Aviator, Journey, etc. The reissue comes with three bonus cuts (one unreleased track by the name of “Melva Devine” and two alternate versions from two songs of the album).Hit The Ground Runnin’ should have been embraced by the masses but due to marketing issues, distribution, or bad luck just never got their shot. The opening title track shows their potential. A strong riff that gives way to an AOR-nuanced verse and chorus, intercut with a bridge that exudes power. This back and forth creates a nice, dynamic track.Second song ‘Back Again’ has a big chugging guitar with a chorus that is dominated by a terrific keyboard melody. After the second chorus, the song takes an interesting turn by throwing in an extra bridge that leads to a guitar and drum interplay before the requisite guitar solo. I love when songs take twists like that.Things keep rolling along with the next track ‘Shanghaid’, one of my favorites from the album. Seems every member of the band gets their moment to shine on this track and the chorus hits all the right buttons: layered vocals, guitar pick on neck sliding, and prominent power keys. Then there’s the ballad ‘Lost’, an acoustic-based track that gives way to power chords, but once again the star is the keyboardist, who performs a nice mix of piano overlaced with keyboards. A true power ballad in every sense and meaning.Regarding this was a shelved recording – some tracks are pre-production demos – the overall sound quality is very good. What really matters here is the strength of these songs – pure late ’80s anthemic, melodic stuff. This band had the potential to shoot to the top and get worldwide acclaim had the album been released just a few years prior to the recording.I touched on the first songs from the track list but other numbers like ‘Born To Be With You’ and ‘Surrounded By Fire’ are just as wonderful as the tracks that preceded them.If you have not heard this album, it’s certainly worth your time and money as long as you know what you are in for production-wise, an unfinished recording that could have possibly been one of the best albums to represent the early ’90s melodic hard rock / AOR sound.
