Bio:

Chris Norman (born Christopher Ward Norman, 25 October 1950) is an English soft rock singer. Norman was the lead singer of Smokie, an English glam rock band from Bradford, which found success in Europe in the 1970s.Norman was born in Redcar, North Yorkshire. His parents did not intend that he should pursue a stage career, but when he was just three years old, he decided to walk on stage and join the finale line-up for the show in which his parents were appearing. This may have had an effect on him because with the advent of rock and roll, Norman acquired his first guitar at the age of seven. His early musical influences were Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Lonnie Donegan. In these early years, Norman’s parents moved around the country a lot which resulted in him going to nine different schools, and living in various locations around England, such as, Redcar, Luton, Kimpton and Nottingham. By 1962 however the family had moved back to Norman's mother's home city of Bradford. Approaching his twelfth birthday, Norman started at St. Bede’s Grammar School where he was to meet Alan Silson and Terry Uttley, future members of Smokie. As teenagers, influenced by the new era of groups such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and then folk singer, Bob Dylan, Norman and Silson began meeting up and spent nearly all their spare time learning new songs on their guitars. They managed to persuade Uttley to join them and, along with a drummer friend called Ron Kelly, they formed their first band. The Yen, Essence, and Long Side Down were just some of a variety of names they called themselves before settling on "The Elizabethans".In 1968 "The Elizabethans" had turned professional following a stint at Butlins holiday camp in Skegness. Another name change was inevitable, but during the next seven years Norman and the band gained much experience playing around the country. They performed some live radio broadcasts, including Radio 1 Roadshows. They gained a recording contract with RCA, and then Decca Records, and released three singles under their new name of "Kindness".During this period the band played many different styles and venues, and had a period as the backing group to Peter Noone, after he had just left Herman's Hermits. When Ron Kelly left the group in 1973, an old friend called Pete Spencer was asked to take over on the drums, and the group, which was to become Smokie, was complete. That same year the group took on a new manager, Bill Hurley. Hurley set about getting them out of their recording contract with Decca Records and managed to sign them to Mickie Most’s RAK record label with the songwriters Nicky Chinn / Mike Chapman as their production company.By 1974 they had developed their own sound reflecting their close, three part, harmonies and Norman’s distinctive vocal sound. The band’s name was changed from Smokey to Smokie, and their debut album, Pass It Around was released in 1975.By the summer of that year they had their first hit with "If You Think You Know How To Love Me". This was followed by a string of hit singles including "Living Next Door To Alice". Norman completed a successful duet with Suzi Quatro, "Stumblin' In" in 1978, which gave Norman his first taste of success outside of the group.By now Smokie were enjoying success touring all over the world, but the strain and pressure of constantly being away from home and family was beginning to tell on Norman. By the early 1980s he decided to spend more time writing and working in the studio.Norman together with Pete Spencer, now concentrated on songs for other artists including hits for Kevin Keegan and the England football team song "This Time (We'll Get It Right)". He also worked with Agnetha Fältskog from ABBA (on her solo album), Donovan, and The Heavy Metal Kids.In 1985 Smokie reconvened to appear in a charity show in aid of the Bradford City A.F.C. fire disaster. The show was successful and as a result the band decided to go back on the road. Tours of Germany and Australia followed, but in the latter part of that year, Norman recorded a project for a German TV movie and decided to once again concentrate on his solo career. That part of his career took off in 1986 with the song, "Midnight Lady", which was a hit throughout Europe holding the number one spot in Germany for six weeks. Written by Dieter Bohlen (of successful Modern Talking), it sold 900,000 copies in Germany alone.Further success followed by the songs "Some Hearts Are Diamonds", "No Arms Can Ever Hold You", "Broken Heroes", "Fearless Hearts", "Sarah" and "Baby I Miss You". In 1994 Norman was honoured by CMT Europe as their "International Video Star of the Year".In 2004 he took part at "Comeback Show" on the German TV station PRO7 and he performed "Stumblin' In" as a duet with C. C. Catch. In the final episode of the show he was joined by Smokie for the final Song."With Smokie we had success all over the world, but our greatest success we always had in Germany", says Norman. "In Germany there has always been the highest interest in my solo albums".Norman continues to this day to record and perform gigs throughout Europe and beyond.

Album:

40 years after launching his successful career with his former band Smokie, Chris Norman returns with a brand-new solo album: Covering an incredibly wide range of influences, genres and styles, Crossover will be released on September 18th 2015 through Solo Sound Records (distributed by Absolute).“The title just seemed appropriate because of the variety of styles of the songs, which cross from one genre to another,” says Chris Norman of his upcoming studio album Crossover. Indeed, the Yorkshire-born singer and songwriter, who launched his successful solo career with the single Midnight Lady back in 1986, has rarely sounded as versatile and genre-defying as he does over the 12 tracks on this album. Also featuring bonus track Forty Years On – a remix of the song Norman exclusively penned for the recent 40th Anniversary release Smokie Gold 1975-2015 – album opener Waiting serves as the album’s first single, and will be available worldwide online on iTunes, Amazon etcetera. To support the album release, Chris Norman will embark upon on an 18-date German tour in November, with more dates in other territories to be announced shortly.Born into a show business family going back two generations, it’s hardly surprising that Chris Norman fell in love with music at a very young age: Chris was only three years old when he decided to walk on stage and join the finale line up for a show in which his parents were appearing. Four years later, aged seven, he got his first guitar, and at 11, Chris started at St. Bede’s Grammar School in Bradford where he met Alan Silson and Terry Uttley – the future members of Smokie. In 1973 Pete Spencer completed the line up. From 1975 Smokie dominated the charts in UK and various other countries, Chris and the Band released a string of hit singles, including If You Think You Know How To Love Me, Living Next Door To Alice, Mexican Girl, It´s Your Life and Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone.Having first tasted success outside the group with Stumblin In (a duet he recorded with Suzi Quatro in 1978), he left Smokie in 1986 after a massively successful decade and launched his solo career with a bang: The single Midnight Lady, featured in a popular German TV movie and became a massive hit throughout Europe, holding the number one spot in Germany for six weeks! Awarded “International Video Star of the Year” by CMT Europe in 1994, Chris Norman continued to release countless hits – including stand-outs such as No Arms Can Ever Hold You (1988) and Amazing (2004) – making him one of the few artists on YouTube whose videos have exceeded 10 million views per clip.Following his 2011 release Time Traveller and his most recent There And Back album (2013), the singer, who was born in Redcar in 1950, returns with Crossover – his most genre-defying and wide-ranging release yet: “I decided not to follow any kind of style and just worked on any song I came up with no matter what direction. I took no notice if it was rock or country or whatever, the only thing I went by was if it was a good song and I felt it suited my voice,” says Norman of the album, which he wrote over the course of five months.

Album:

Famed for fronting huge 70's hit band Smokie, Chris Norman has gone on to carve a successful solo career since leaving the band in 1986, when his first single 'Midnight Lady' became a massive hit throughout Europe including holding the German No.1 slot for 6 weeks! Now, with over 20 solo albums to his name, he's back with a brand new collection and sounding better than ever. It is an eclectic mix of new and original recordings that have that his unmistakable sound. The tracks are hallmarks of a true singer-songwriter with timeless melodies and memorable harmonies that soar. The single 'Crawling Up The Wall' is an instant classic highlighting Chris' unique and instantly recognisable voice. Chris Norman was destined for show business after coming from a family with connections reaching back two generations. His Grandparents toured their own concert party around England during the First World War and their daughter Pat (Chris's mother) joined a dance troupe when she left school. Pip Norman, (Chris's Dad) was part of a dancing/comedy act called 'The Four Jokers' and worked all over Europe in the 1930s/40s and had a British Royal Variety Performance to their credit. He got his first guitar at the age of seven and his early musical influences were Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Lonnie Donegan. Later the 60's beat groups, in particular The Beatles, and the folk singer Bob Dylan, were a huge influence on Chris. He formed a band at school and played all over the UK in the late 60s and early seventies. By 1974 the group had developed their own sound reflecting their close three part harmonies and Chris's distinctive vocal sound wrapped up in a guitar rock sound, a sort of mixture between Crosby, Stills & Nash and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The band changed their name to 'Smokie' and their first album 'Pass it Around' was released in 1975 on Micky Most's RAK records. Smokie had started as an album orientated rock act and their many live experiences had given Chris and Smokie a good grounding in all the tricks of the Rock 'n' Roll trade. Chris remembers: "We weren't so much interested in pop singles at first. That's why the back cover of our first LP 'PASS IT AROUND' was designed in a way that made us look kind of folk/rocky instead of a Glamrock band." Nevertheless, by the summer of that year they had their first hit single with 'If you think you know how to love me'. This was followed by a string of 15 hit singles including 'Living next door to Alice', 'I'll meet you at Midnight', 'Lay back in the arms of Someone', etc. Plus the very successful duet with Suzi Quatro, 'Stumblin' In' which gave Chris his first taste of success outside the group. Following his departure from the group and a string of successful solo hits, in 1994 Chris was awarded 'International video Star of the Year' by CMT Europe for the videos 'Jealous Heart', 'The Growing Years' and 'Red Hot Screaming Love'. Over the last 20 years Chris has been busy touring with his live band and releasing a new album every couple of years.

Album:

From 1973 to 1986, Chris Norman (1950) was the frontman of the British band Smokie (initially still as Smokey), which, especially in the seventies, racked up one hit after another thanks to the composing skills of the producers and composers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman.Songs like Living Next Door To Alice and Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone, both reaching number 1 in the Netherlands at the time, have proven to be evergreens. After his Smokie period Norman was successful mainly in Germany with Modern Talking-tinged tunes, of which the number Midnight Lady was also appreciated in our country (number 16 in the Top 40).This makes it all the more surprising that Norman, with his voice that is recognisable from thousands and that doesn't show any signs of wear and tear, now comes up with such a versatile album, which was produced again and compositionally supported by his old friend Mike Chapman.Among the dozen songs are brilliant pop rock songs like Streets Of Manhattan, radiogenic songs like the NPO Radio 2-suited All Because Of You, solid rockers for his tastes like Low Life, Goin' Down and Good Enough For Rock 'N' Roll, soul-infused songs like Instead Of Me and custom orchestrated ballads like Let Your Heart Speak For You, while the title track is embellished with light bluesy touches. The CD contains one cover in the form of Hello, How Are You ? by The Easybeats, the Australian five-man group that may be better known for the world hit Friday On My Mind.Great album!
