Bio:

Kansas is an American rock band that became popular in the 1970s initially on album-oriented rock charts and later with hit singles such as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind".The band has produced eight gold albums, three multi-platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, The Best of Kansas), one platinum live album (Two for the Show) and a million-selling single, "Dust in the Wind". Kansas appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the 1970s and 1980s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. "Carry On Wayward Son" was the second-most-played track on US classic rock radio in 1995 and No. 1 in 1997.In 1969, Lynn Meredith, Don Montre, Dan Wright and Kerry Livgren (guitars, keyboards, synthesizers) were performing in a band called The Reasons Why in their hometown of Topeka, Kansas. After changing the band's name to Saratoga, they started playing Livgren's original material with Scott Kessler playing bass and Zeke Lowe on drums. In 1970, they changed the band's name to Kansas and merged with members of rival Topeka progressive rock group White Clover. White Clover members Dave Hope (bass) and Phil Ehart (drums, percussion) joined with Livgren, vocalists Meredith and Joel Warne, keyboardists Montre and Wright and saxophonist Larry Baker. This early Kansas group, which lasted until 1971 when Ehart, Hope and some of the others left to reform White Clover, is sometimes referred to as Kansas I.Ehart was replaced by Zeke Lowe and later Brad Schulz, Hope was replaced by Rod Mikinski on bass, and Baker was replaced by John Bolton on saxophone and flute. (This lineup is sometimes referred to as Kansas II, and 30 years later would re-form under the name Proto-Kaw.) In 1972, after Ehart returned from England (where he had gone to look for other musicians), he and Hope once again reformed White Clover with Robby Steinhardt (vocals, violin, viola, cello), Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards, synthesizers, percussion) and Rich Williams (guitars). In 1973 they recruited Livgren from the second Kansas group, which then folded.[6] Eventually they received a recording contract with Don Kirshner's eponymous label and decided to adopt the Kansas name.

Album:

Here’s the Rock Candy Records remastered & reloaded release of KANSAS 1983’s album “Drastic Measures“, the band’s ninth and final studio offering from the first era before hanging up their instruments.“Drastic Measures” was the band’s second album to feature new vocalist John Elefante – an appointment made necessary after the departure of Steve Walsh. Not surprisingly, the band’s sound was evolving, moving with the times and displaying a more accessible timbre.Sure, the progressive rock element was still entirely audible but the songs and delivery fitted into the jet stream of men on a mission. AOR for sure but with an edge and urgency that leaves little room for debate. This RC remaster is bright and clear, however not including bonus tracks. We added our own, a ‘0dayrox extra’, the song Kansas recorded at the same sessions and included a year after into their 1984’s ‘The Best of Kansas’.As the prime purveyors of progressive pomp rock, Kansas ruled the roost during the ‘70s accruing the sort of multi-platinum success that they could only have dreamed of at the start of their career back in their hometown of Topeka, Kansas. But it wasn’t just album sales that won them an immense following. Against all odds they actually scored hit singles, taking their music into the hearts and minds of a new and expansive audience.Kerry Livgren only contributes just three songs to the album (the more prog oriented), compared to six composed by John and Dino Elefante. On the plus side the band had drafted in producer Neil Kernon on the back of his success with several Hall & Oates albums, snagging him just before he would become synonymous with commercial hard rock bands like Dokken, Queensryche and Autograph.Kernon actually did a great job with the material on “Drastic Measures”, giving Kansas a punchy, sophisticated AOR sound they’d never had before. The powerful opener “Fight Fire With Fire” is a classic slice of inventive AOR that the band still play occasionally today, and “Don’t Take Your Love Away” has the kind of light and shade that they’re known for.Other Elefante compositions included the memorable melodic ballad “Andi”, whilst the hi-tech of “Get Rich” is very modern for the era, where Kernon’s touch is evident.“Everybody’s My Friend” and “Incident On A Bridge” are both urgent AOR numbers with heavy keyboards. The three Livgren songs tell a tale of their own, being “End Of The Age” the more prog-friendly song but with accessible harmonies.“Drastic Measures” is definitely a mid ’80s AOR rock album with great melodies and big keyboards, in the vein of Balance and on many passages, Journey and alike. The modern and brilliant production by Neil Kernon is now enhanced with a huge sound and extra clarity with this brand new remaster.A must have for any ’80s AOR fan.

Album:

After 16 years of absence legends KANSAS are back with a reinvigorated line-up and a great new studio album titled "The Prelude Implicit" with this Special Edition Digipack featuring 2 extra tracks. The name Kansas strikes all the exciting notes among young and older fans alike. A band that really proved itself to be timeless and ever youthful in every way possible, Kansas has come a long way from the 1970’s. Kansas has witnessed numerous line-up changes over the course of time. All of this without a drastic change in their sound. There have been many bands that have kept fans waiting rather painfully and endlessly for new music. In this case, Kansas takes the cake. And after a long 16 year wait, the band did it again.Much like the band’s musical past, "The Prelude Implicit" is another divine record.Since first track 'With This Heart' speaks by itself about the sheer good vibes that Kansas creates. The song is brimming with a lot of happy sounds and I personally thought it was a rather soothing track. This really helps ease the listener into what follows. Up next is 'Visibility Zero' which starts off with a really modern prog sound that many younger audiences are quite acquainted with. The song gradually sways more towards a classical prog rock sounds and sways between older and newer sounds. The superb work on the keys, guitars, drums, bass and the violins work incredibly well with the impressive singing. 'The Unsung Heroes' is a personal favourite on the record, perfectly balanced and tasteful. The intro and the transitions and the latter of the song are skilfully handled, the lyrics are so well written and the instrumental side of things are sublime. It is a fine example of a song which isn’t overdone at all. The vocals take the limelight here as well. 'Rhythm in the Spirit”'opens up with some catchy guitar parts before rest of the band kick in and the results are simply grand. This song sounds so rich and heavy. Songs like 'Camouflage' and 'Crowded Isolation' feature the typical catchy sounds that Kansas is renowned and revered for, pretty melodic hard rock if you ask me. Apart from their melodious sections, the songs have really tight and intense openings. These two are also typical of the classy Kansas sound and also captures the essence of elements that made sounds from older eras. The groovy rhythm sections are endlessly appealing.'Section 60' marks the end of what has been an awesome record. This instrumental piece is a great culmination with its spectacular arrangements. It was a great move to end the record with a song that showcases just the instruments. This Special Edition includes 2 extra track as bonus; the highly melodic midtempo 'Home on the Range" filled with acoustics and a lovely atmosphere, and 'Oh Shenandoah', a terrific instrumental but this time with a melodic rock feel moved by a great guitar work."The Prelude Implicit" is epic in every sense of the term, but in the good sense of the term. Kansas shows what it truly means to be timeless and quite literally defy aging in their music. The new album is a fine balance between their classic style and newer contemporary sounds. It blends light prog with melodic rock with ease. In a time when progressive music is more often than not overdone for the sake of being ‘proggy’, Kansas brings a new class with its music. The guitars are fire on this record. Zak Rizvi and Richard Williams showcase some amazing and inspiring work. Phil Ehart adds oodles of rhythm with his intense drums fills while Billy Greer holds down the groove & rhythm while displaying great prowess on the bass guitar. David Manion’s magical touch on the keys and the organ adds a fine texture in the band’s music and is instrumental in making the music sound timeless. David Ragsdale’s violins create a signature sound more or less with rest of the band. The violins add so much musical flavor and it is a voice by itself in the band’s music. Ronnie Platt’s singing is marvelous. There is no better word to describe the lovely singing on the record. His vocal work add so much depth to the instrumental parts and gives a certain definitive meaning to the music. Billy Greer adds his distinctive touch to the vocals too. Production on "The Prelude Implicit" is pristine but with muscle, with each instrument finding room to breather. To sum up, "The Prelude Implicit" is a terrific comeback album from a band that never released a bad one, but this new is easily among their best.

Kansas, America’s legendary progressive rock band, will release their new live album "Leftoverture Live & Beyond". This is the first live album since 2009 for the band that has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and is famous for classic hits such as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust In The Wind", to progressive epics like "Miracles Out Of Nowhere"."Leftoverture Live & Beyond", produced by Jeff Glixman, features nineteen songs selected from twelve shows recorded during Kansas's Spring 2017 Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour. The setlist includes classic hits, deep cuts, new songs from 2016’s studio album "The Prelude Implicit", and culminates with the band’s sextuple-platinum breakthrough album, "Leftoverture", performed in its entirety.Coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of "Leftoverture" and the release of "The Prelude Implicit", Kansas embarked on their biggest headlining tour in decades. The overwhelming success of that tour led the band, along with InsideOutMusic, to release selected songs from the tour as a live album.“When we saw how much our fans enjoyed the Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour shows, we knew we had to record a live album”, said Kansas drummer Phil Ehart. “When it came to finding someone to produce it, we thought the best possible person would be the guy that produced 'Leftoverture' forty years ago. So, we called Jeff Glixman!”“I’m really excited with how this live album sounds”, adds producer Jeff Glixman. “This band is on fire. Producing this live album was truly an undertaking, but I am confident that Kansas fans will enjoy the end result.”"Leftoverture Live & Beyond" will be released on InsideOutMusic. The album will be available as a double CD digipak, four 180 gram vinyl boxed set, and as a digital album.

Album:

Point of Know Return Live & Beyond is co-produced by Phil Ehart and Richard Williams, and is recorded and mixed by Chad Singer. The album features 22 songs selected from 12 shows recorded in 2019 and 2020 during KANSAS’s Point of Know Return Anniversary Tour. The setlist includes classic hits, deep cuts, and culminates with the band’s sextuple-platinum album, Point of Know Return, performed in its entirety.I first came across the music of Kansas on an old episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test where a track from their then new album, ‘Kansas’, was played. The song in question was Journey From Mariabronn, this was played against the backdrop of a black and white cartoon and I was very taken with it.It was not until a few years later that I managed to acquire a copy of that album and enjoy the fine music that its grooves contained. Quite a few years later I came across their new album via a promotional vinyl version of ‘Point of Know Return’ with its fabulous sleeve of a ship falling over the edge of the world.Kansas have been one of my favourite American bands since those early days, I even used to have the ‘Point of Know Return’ album cover on an etched mirror that sadly is no more. Along with Styx and Journey these were the holy trinity of American Rock for me, I still relish any new material that Kansas make and I am eager to see them live again having first seen them at Walt Disney World in the early 1990’s when Steve Morse was in the band, as was Steve Walsh, both of whom are no longer involved. Nowadays the band is fronted by Ronnie Platts (ex-Shooting Star, another class US band in a similar style to Kansas). This live album brings the whole of the ‘Point of Know Return’ album together with some other deep cuts from the extensive catalogue that the band have developed in the last 47 years. Many of the songs have been staples in their live shows since the album was first released in 1977, but here you get the whole album live in one show played in the original order. If you like Kansas then this album will not disappoint for it shows very clearly how excellent the calibre of material the ‘Point of Know Return’ album contained then and how well that it still stands up today, over 40 years after it was originally recorded. Ronnie Platts is in very fine voice throughout, okay there may be a few missed or muffled notes but, overall, this stands good comparison to the version on earlier live Kansas releases and can stand proudly next to all those albums. The album has a good selection of some lesser performed Kansas material including songs from the ‘Freak of Nature’ album from the 1990s and a rare outing for Two Cents Worth from the ‘Masque’ album of 1975 and a couple of more recent tracks from ‘The Prelude Implicit’ and ‘The Absence of Presence’, cramming 22 slices of distilled Kansas magic onto 2 CDs.The album falls into 3 sections, Tracks 1-8 on CD 1 are the deep cuts, CD 2 Tracks 1-10 are the whole of the ‘Point of Know Return – Live & Beyond’ in order, Track 11 is Carry on My Wayward Son, 12 and 13 are acoustic versions of People of The South Wind and Refugee and the album concludes with an acoustic version of Lonely Wind from the first Kansas album from 1974.Throughout you get fabulous and meticulous musicianship and exemplary performances and songs that are both meaningful and memorable and with fabulous melodies running through their veins. Kansas are not getting any younger so any chance to hear this band firing on all cylinders is an opportunity that should be embraced, music of this calibre deserves to be heard by all that will listen.I especially like the reverence with which these classic songs are treated and respected, it is very fitting, and you can tell how much the band appreciate and value this momentous period of their history. This album reflects that with the care and diligence with which they perform these songs once again. The artwork is as good as that which accompanied the release of the ‘Leftoverture – Live and Beyond’ and fans are in for a real treat. It is a pity that the show was not recorded for posterity on film as that would be something special and much sought after by many fans like me. My shelf is awaiting the arrival of this CD Set in the very near future where it will join the other masterpieces of this truly legendary US Band.
