Bio:

Black Sabbath are generally considered both the first heavy metal and doom metal band. Originally they were called Polka Tulk (featuring a saxophonist and slide guitarist in their line-up) before changing to Earth, a name they had to change again because of confusion with another band of the same name. They may have also went by the name The Earth Blues Company in their pre-Black Sabbath days.Originally, they started as a blues-influenced hard rock group, but as they progressed they added more European folk elements to their sound, a sound that wasn't like any other group during their time. Thus, this was known as heavy metal, and in due time, the band became what is now known as doom metal. Their lyrics dealt with darker issues than most conventional rock as well.Accordingly, the "doom" genre name came from their "Paranoid" release, with the song called "Hand of Doom." Stoner metal is another sub-genre that is a direct descendant from this band. The "Mob Rules" line-up of Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice reunited in 2007. Rather than using the Black Sabbath name (as the original line-up is still officially in place), they were called Heaven and Hell, after the first Dio-era album. Three new tracks were recorded for a compilation album of Dio-era Sabbath material before they officially reformed under the Heaven and Hell name.On May 13th 2006, Black Sabbath were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming arguably the first heavy metal band to receive that honor. On November 11, 2011, the original members of Black Sabbath officially announced that they would record a new album and tour again in 2012.On May 19th, 2012, Geezer Butler announced that Tommy Clufetos would be the drummer for the band at three live shows. Original drummer Bill Ward has issued a statement saying that he would not join the reunion because of an "un-signable contract".

Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1992 album from the Heavy Metal legends. Dehumanizer was arguably one of Black Sabbath's heaviest albums and features the vocals of the late, great Ronnie James Dio along with founder members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, completed by the heavy hitting drums of Vinny Appice; the line-up that created 1981's epochal Mob Rules and 1983's Live Evil. This edition is expanded with the single edit of 'Master of Insanity', an alternate version of 'Letters from Earth' that originally appeared as the b-side to the 'TV Crimes' single, and a version of 'Time Machine' recorded for the soundtrack to the movie Wayne's World. In addition, the set also includes five rare live tracks from Florida's Sundome recorded at the beginning of the Dehumanizer tour in July 1992, including a previously unreleased live version of 'Master of Insanity'. The set includes liner notes from Classic Rock and Metal Hammer's Dom Lawson, based on new interviews with Tony Iommi. Virgin. 2011.

Album:

Never Say Die! is the eighth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1978. It was the last studio album with the band's original lineup and also the last studio album to feature original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne until 13 in 2013. It was certified Gold in the U.S on 7 November 1997[1] and as of November 2011 sold 133,000 copies in the United States since the SoundScan era.Critics called it unbalanced, scattering its energy in too many directions.1978's "Never Say Die!" has the unfortunate connotation (along with 1995's "Forbidden") of being "The worst Black Sabbath album ever". It's easy to see why it gets tagged as such - 1978 was not a great year for Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill, and to say that they were not functional as a band would be a massive understatement. Drugs and booze and apathy had slowly disintegrated them into a flailing morass of a unit, and the musical peaks and artistic integrity they'd achieved with "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and "Sabotage" seemed like a dream from another life, rather than just a few short years in the rear view mirror. It seemed as if it was a completely different band, and in some regards, that's probably not far removed from the truth. Ozzy had briefly left the band in 1977 and flirted with the idea of fronting a different project, and even when he returned, it was clear his heart wasn't in it anymore. Tony Iommi had all but become supreme deity in the band due to the fact that somebody needed to steer the ship and nobody else had the capacity to manage it."Never Say Die!" has an end result of being a Sabbath album that's far more reliant on jazz and moderate rock than on the crushing heaviness and scary imagery that Black Sabbath had been known for previously. But Sabbath excelled as musicians no matter what imagery the album may or may not have had and with that understanding, it's not unpleasant. What actually elevates it up from the dung heap is that Tony, Geezer and Bill were (and are to this day) fantastic musicians who excel at pretty much anything they do - so much so that, even when it's bad, it's still rather good. Nobody can argue that "Never Say Die!" lacks the intensity of previous efforts, and is musically a huge departure from the norm, but taken for what it is and not what it should be, it's a remarkably solid album full of consistent, easily listenable and enjoyable performances. Of course, one can also argue that Black Sabbath were never a band above experimenting with different musical styles from "Vol. 4" and beyond, and to that end, "Never Say Die!" certainly follows suit in that fashion.Lyrically, the band offers a lot of different themes here - from looking to the horizon hopefully ("A Hard Road"), cryogenic nightmares ("Shock Wave"), the perspective of an aging dancer ("Air Dance", which features some amazing keyboard work by Don Airey), and a referential song about Ozzy and his at the time recently deceased father ("Junior's Eyes"), there's not a lot of evil themes to be found anywhere. The final tracks, "Breakout" and "Swinging the Chain", are full on jazz themed rockers and a surprising amount of fun to listen to!Understanding that "Never Say Die!" is an appropriate record depicting where Sabbath's mindset was at that time is the first key to enjoying it. Most of the negativity that surrounds the album is maybe understandable to fans who would have liked more along the lines of a "Master of Reality" theme, but the vitriol that gets heaped on this particular outing infers that the musicianship and songwriting is sub-par, when that's certainly not the case. It's actually a step up from "Technical Ecstasy", even if it does follow the same direction as that album. It's an interesting anomaly in the Black Sabbath discography, but it's definitely a benchmark album depicting what was to become a very critical time in their history and it's definitely worth the listen, provided you can take your goggles off. It's of course nowhere near what their first six albums were regarding quality, but it's also nowhere near as awful as some other reviews might lead you to think.

Born Again is the 11th studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, which was released in August of 1983. It is the only album the group recorded with lead vocalist Ian Gillan, best known for his work with Deep Purple. It was also the last Black Sabbath album for nine years to feature original bassist Geezer Butler, and the last to feature drummer Bill Ward until he played a studio track on their 1998 live album Reunion. The album has received mixed to negative reviews from critics, but it was a commercial success upon its 1983 release, reaching No. 4 in the UK charts. The album also hit the top 40 in the United States. All songs credited to Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Ian Gillan, except where noted.

Original drummer Bill Ward has issued a statement saying that he would not join the reunion because of an "un-signable contract".

Album:

Technical Ecstasy is the seventh studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and released in September 1976. The album was certified Gold on 19 June 1997 and peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200 Album chart. All tracks written by Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne, except "It's Alright", written by Bill Ward. After frustrating legal battles that accompanied the recording of 1975's Sabotage, Sabbath chose Miami's Criteria Studios for the making of Technical Ecstasy, which continued the band's separation from the doom and darkness that had been a trademark of their earlier albums. "Some people may have heard the band in 1970," noted Iommi, "and be thinking, 'Oh no, not them again!' But if they heard us now, they probably might like us."In the July 2001 issue of Guitar World, Dan Epstein wrote, "The sessions proved extremely relaxing for everyone except Iommi, who was left to oversee the production while the others sunned themselves on the beach." Iommi explained to the same magazine in 1992, "We recorded the album in Miami, and nobody would take responsibility for the production. No one wanted to bring in an outside person for help, and no one wanted the whole band to produce it. So they left it all to me!"In the liner notes to the band's 1998 live album Reunion, Phil Alexander writes that, while the band struggled to finish the album, "rock had spawned a new set of iconoclasts as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned… Suddenly Sabbath found themselves both unsure of their musical direction and labeled as has-beens." "It's not like now: If you're a heavy metal band, you put out a heavy metal album," Butler explained to Uncut in 2014. "Back then, you had to at least try to be modern and keep up. Punk was massive then and we felt that our time had come and gone."To make matters worse for the band, manager Don Arden began spending more of his time focusing on another of his acts, ELO, whose 1975 album Face The Music was their first to make the US top ten. Iommi's determination to move Sabbath in a new direction was misguided according to some, with Mick Wall noting in the 2013 book Black Sabbath: Symptom of the Universe that while future soft rock million-sellers Hotel California and Rumours were just around the corner, "to try and force that sound on Black Sabbath was like trying to put lamb's wool on a suit of armour. It just didn't work, pleasing nobody."In his autobiography I Am Ozzy, vocalist Ozzy Osbourne admitted he had begun to consider leaving the band during this time: "I'd even had a T-shirt made with 'Blizzard of Ozz' written on the front. Meanwhile, in the studio, Tony (Iommi) was always saying, 'We've gotta sound like Foreigner', or 'We've gotta sound like Queen.' But I thought it was strange that the bands we'd once influenced were now influencing us." Osbourne also wrote that the cost of recording in Florida "was astronomical" and that he'd "lost the plot with the booze and the drugs" during the recording of Technical Ecstasy, eventually checking himself into the Stafford County Asylum on his return to England."That was the beginning of the end, that one", bassist Geezer Butler confessed to Guitar World in 2001. "We were managing ourselves because we couldn't trust anybody. Everybody was trying to rip us off, including the lawyers we'd hired to get us out of our legal mess. It was really just getting to us around then, and we didn't know what we were doing. And obviously, the music was suffering; you could just feel the whole thing falling apart." Osbourne briefly left following the Technical Ecstasy Tour – and, although he would eventually return for the follow-up Never Say Die!, the band temporarily replaced him with former Savoy Brown vocalist Dave Walker. The band wrote a handful of songs with Walker, and performed an early version of what would become "Junior's Eyes" on the BBC programme Look Hear with him. While the band were recording the album, The Eagles were recording Hotel California in an adjacent studio at Criteria Studios in Miami. "Before we could start recording we had to scrape all the cocaine out of the mixing board," Geezer divulged to Uncut in 2014. "I think they'd left about a pound of cocaine in the board." The Eagles were forced to stop recording on numerous occasions because Sabbath were too loud and the sound was coming through the wall. The cover art was designed by Hipgnosis. Osbourne once described it as "two robots screwing on an escalator".Hipgnosis' Storm Thorgerson, who had been assisted by graphic designer George Hardie, discussed the cover with Zoom magazine in 1979:"We're very fond of that cover. From the title of the piece, Technical Ecstasy, I thought of something ecstatic rather than something technical, and I immediately thought of ecstasy in sexual terms: some sort of mechanical copulation, which would be tricky to do. I then thought of ecstasy as falling in love, perhaps during a brief encounter on an escalator – and, since it was 'technical', I thought of two robots ... It's really quite simple – he's just done curves for the female and hard, angular, macho lines for the male. It's really quite sexist, actually – stereotyped. Anyway, it's love at first sight, but I felt robots wouldn't do it like humans would do it, so instead they're squirting lubricating fluid at one another." The UK release had a two-sided insert of lyrics and credits. The album received mixed reviews, with Phil Alexander writing in 1998, "While today hardcore Sabs fans defend some of the bold steps taken on Technical Ecstasy, it was a confused offering which still hit Number 13 in the UK but limped into the US charts at 52." In 2001, Guitar World was less kind, calling it perhaps the "least-loved effort of the original lineup" with the band "trying to stretch its sound in several different directions, none of them exceptionally successful." It deemed "Rock 'N' Roll Doctor" "a bad Kiss imitation" while eschewing "It's Alright" as "a sub-par Paul McCartney-style pop ballad." In 2013 Mojo magazine opined, "Technical Ecstasy is the sound of Sabbath trying to make a grown-up, radio-friendly rock record and, in some parts, it works ... Mostly, however, it doesn't with tracks like 'Back Street Kids', 'Rock 'N' Roll Doctor' and 'Dirty Women' resorting to clichéd and ill-fitting rock moves." Greg Prato of AllMusic agrees "it was not on par with Sabbath's exceptional first five releases," but praises "Dirty Women", the "funky" "All Moving Parts (Stand Still)" and the "raging opener" "Back Street Kids".

Album:

Tyr (/ˈtɪər/) (stylized as ᛏᛉᚱ) is the 15th studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in August 1990 by I.R.S. Records. The album title, and several song titles, allude to Norse mythology, which led many to call Tyr a concept album, although bassist Neil Murray dispelled that in 2005, stating that while many of the songs may seem loosely related, very little of the album has to do with mythology and it was not intended to be a concept recording. In Norse mythology, Týr is the god of single combat and heroic glory, and the son of Odin. The album's departure from the darker lyrics of Headless Cross was discussed by Tony Iommi in his 2012 autobiography Iron Man: "For our next album, Tyr, we went back to the Woodcray Studios in February 1990, with me and Cozy producing it again. On Headless Cross, Tony [Martin] had just come into the band and he assumed, oh, Black Sabbath, it's all about the Devil, so his lyrics were full of the Devil and Satan. It was too much in your face. We told him to be a bit more subtle about it, so for Tyr he did all these lyrics about Nordic gods and whatnot. It took me a while to get my head around that." This album represents possibly the most dramatic departure from Black Sabbath's traditional sound, with only traces of it found in the occasional riff. The production has been criticised by some (who claim Cozy Powell's drums drown out most of the other instruments) and praised by others, who note that this is one of Sabbath's heaviest albums and perhaps the most prominently reliant on keyboards by the perennial fifth member, Geoff Nicholls. As a result, much of the music is a lot darker than previous Sabbath works, closely resembling the previous album Headless Cross. The band have stated that while they do not disown or regret the song "Feels Good to Me", it was put on the album solely to be released as a single and does not fit in musically with the rest of the record.Geezer Butler, Ian Gillan and Brian May made guest appearances on the European leg of the Tyr tour; Butler and May appearing during the encore of the show performed on 8 September 1990 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The runes on the cover, ᛏ, ᛉ, and ᚱ are taken from the Rök Runestone in Sweden.[9] The middle rune, algiz, is transcribed as the modern letter x or z, not y. The only track to feature on post-Tyr tours was "Anno Mundi", e.g. on the Cross Purposes Live VHS/DVD. Tony Martin re-recorded "Jerusalem" for his 1992 solo album Back Where I Belong. The Black Sabbath line-up that recorded Tyr would reunite to record their eighteenth studio album, Forbidden, in 1995. Frontman Heri Joensen of Viking metal band Týr claims to have been influenced by the album cover when designing his own band's logo.

Album:

Cross Purposes is the 17th studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in January 1994. Dehumanizer saw the reunion of Mob Rules-era Black Sabbath, but, after the tour, Ronnie James Dio (vocals) and Vinny Appice (drums) departed. They were replaced by former Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin and former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli. Geezer Butler remained with the group, although he would depart later in the year again before the recording of the Forbidden album. The song "Cardinal Sin" was originally intended to be titled "Sin Cardinal Sin" (or "Sin, Cardinal Sin") but a printing error on the album sleeve caused the first word to be removed. Sabbath simply adopted the title "Cardinal Sin" as the name of the song.A promo video in black-and-white was shot for the song "Hand That Rocks the Cradle"."What's the Use?" was released only on the Japanese edition of Cross Purposes, which also contained a free sticker of the artwork. A nearly identical version of the "burning angel" image was featured on a Scorpions single three years earlier. The album peaked at number 122 on the Billboard 200 charts. In July 2014, Guitar World magazine ranked Cross Purposes at number six in the "Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994" list. All tracks written by Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Tony Martin, except "Evil Eye" written by Butler, Iommi, Martin, and Eddie Van Halen (who was not credited, due to restrictions from his record label, Warner Bros. Records).

Album:

The Eternal Idol is the thirteenth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released on November 1, 1987(UK) and December 8, 1987(USA). It is the first Black Sabbath album to feature vocalist Tony Martin. It spent six weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at 168.It was also the last full album of new material by Black Sabbath to be released by Warner Bros. Records (in North America), and the final album through their original label Vertigo Records until the release of 13 in 2013.The 2010 Deluxe Edition Disc 2 consists of the earlier recording sessions, with Ray Gillen performing vocals. The album cover features two models in bronze paint re-enacting Auguste Rodin's 1889 sculpture "The Eternal Idol". Due to the paint's toxicity, the models were hospitalized after the shoot. A photograph of the original sculpture was intended as the cover art, but permission could not be secured. The sleeve credits Dave Spitz as bass player, but all bass parts were by Bob Daisley. Eric Singer played the drums; the percussion credit for Bev Bevan relates to a few cymbal overdubs on "Scarlet Pimpernel".The album was originally to be recorded with Spitz and vocalist Ray Gillen. The former was replaced by bassist/lyricist Bob Daisley during initial sessions on Montserrat with producer Jeff Glixman. Gillen had struggled with recording the vocal parts according to Bob, Dave, and Geoff and management wasn't paying him.[9] Gillen quit shortly after their return to England. He later joined the band Badlands.Nightmare was initially written for the third Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Tony Martin was hired and reconstructed the vocals under the guidance of Chris Tsangarides at Battery Studios shortly before production ended.[10] Most tracks were written by Tony Iommi and Bob Daisley (the vinyl version states that all songs were written by Iommi) although some lyrics were modified by Geoff Nicholls. Martin said he "only sang on, and had no part in writing" The Eternal Idol, but nonetheless "thought was one of the better albums of the band."Drummer Bevan and original Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler were hired for a 1987 tour in support of the album, which would have reunited three-quarters of the Born Again tour line-up (with Martin singing rather than Ian Gillan). However, Butler backed out on learning that Sabbath had booked dates in South Africa. Nicholls played bass for a few shows before Jo Burt was hired. Bevan was subsequently replaced by former Clash drummer Terry Chimes, who appears in the music video for "The Shining". ("The bass player in the 'Shining' video," recalled Martin, was some guy that we dragged off the street. I can't remember his name but he looked the part. He said that he was a guitarist. I remember he was always talking about how he was a Red Indian, thus all the turquoise he wore! We never saw him again.""I'd like to have seen some of the stuff off The Eternal Idol be a bit more credited," Iommi reflected to Sabbath fanzine Southern Cross, "because I think there's some good tracks on that album – 'Ancient Warrior'…"A three-minute and fifteen second studio outtake titled "Some Kind of Woman", written by Tony Martin shortly after joining the band, appeared as a b-side of "The Shining" single. An early version of "Black Moon" – a song destined for Headless Cross – was released as a b-side of the "Eternal Idol" single. The album was rereleased on 1 November 2010 in Europe as a two-disc expanded set. Bonus content includes the aforementioned b-sides "Some Kind of Woman" and "Black Moon" on disc 1. Disc 2 contains the session for the album recorded with Ray Gillen on vocals.

Album:

Headless Cross is the fourteenth studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Released on 24 April 1989, it was the group's second album to feature singer Tony Martin and the first of three to feature drummer Cozy Powell, along with Tyr and Forbidden.According to Tony Iommi's autobiography, Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath, the band were dropped from Warner Bros. Records in 1988 after an eighteen-year deal and after Vertigo Records had also dropped them. He met Miles Copeland, who owned I.R.S. Records at the time. Copeland told him: "You know how to write albums, you know what people want. You do it and I'm fine with it." This persuaded Iommi to sign to I.R.S.Iommi asked British drummer Cozy Powell – who had played with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, MSG and Whitesnake, among others – if he wanted to join Sabbath. Iommi and Powell began writing songs at the former's home, with Tony Martin joining for rehearsals. Iommi got a call from Gloria Butler, wife and manager of Geezer Butler, who said the bassist wanted to rejoin Sabbath. However, Butler instead joined Ozzy Osbourne's No Rest for the Wicked tour lineup.Iommi had originally thought to bring Ronnie James Dio back, but Powell convinced him to let Martin stay. Powell and Iommi produced the album themselves.Laurence Cottle played bass as a session musician rather than an official member. He appeared in the video for the title track, but was not featured in promotional photos. For the tour, the lineup was completed by Whitesnake and Gary Moore bassist Neil Murray.Conceptually, the lyrics have predominantly occult and Satanic elements; arguably the only time in the band's career where an entire album is based on such ideas rather than select songs."When Death Calls" has a guitar solo by Queen guitarist Brian May."Call of the Wild" was originally to be titled "Hero" – but, when Osbourne used that title on No Rest for the Wicked, Iommi changed it. "Devil & Daughter" had the original title "Devil's Daughter", but was changed for the same reason."Call of the Wild" and "Devil & Daughter" are also the only songs that do not end slowly fading out with Tony Martin ad-libbing; although "Nightwing" has only the band performing fading out with no ad-libbing on Martin's part. According to Martin, the vocals on "Nightwing" were the original guide vocals, because Iommi thought they sounded better than later recordings."'Black Moon' was written when Ray Gillen was the singer… with Tony Iommi, Geoff Nicholls, Eric Singer and Dave Spitz," noted Martin."They were left with one track that had no voice on it, and Tony asked me if I could sing something on it. I wrote and sang the lyrics in one day! We never played it [live] because there are too many Sabbath favourites."According to the sleeve notes, the cover image was designed by Kevin Wimlett. The sleeve was designed by The Leisure Process at their offices in Little Portland Street London. The UK sleeve was in black-and-white, while the German release added colour.

Album:

Black Sabbath: The Dio Years is a powerful and concise reminder that while original singer Ozzy Osbourne was there first and made more albums, Ronnie James Dio gave Sabbath its second wind and sang on many of their best records. The Dio Years also serves as a sampler or single-disc version of The Rules of Hell box set released the following year that includes the full Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, and Live Evil albums.Moving in chronological order, The Dio Years collects material from the three Dio studio records and the Live Evil live record. The Dio Years definitely leans toward fan favorites. Just over half of the album comes from the two albums widely regarded as Dio’s finest with Black Sabbath — Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules. Dehumanizer lends three tracks and the lone live track is “Children of the Sea” from Live Evil. As with all compilations, some people’s favorite tracks will be left off. However, anyone in a position to notice probably already has the full studio records with those “missing” tracks. As an incentive or reward for those who already have those albums or ended up buying The Rules of Hell, The Dio Years contains three studio tracks only available on The Dio Years. Forcing people to buy an entire album of material that they may very well already own just to get three new tracks may be predatory, but it’s also typical and Black Sabbath were far from the first to do it. The album clearly and accurately lists the tracks, so everyone knows what they are buying. For those hungry for Black Sabbath product, they got a technically new release and a little actual new music. How do those three tunes stack up? The single “The Devil Cried” is a mid-tempo riffer. The chorus is a bit average but the verses and main structure of the song are strong. “Shadow of The Wind,” a doomy chugger with a bluesy solo, is the best of the three. The post-solo section from about 3:50 to 4:50 is stunning. Dio sings “Every day is an inquisition / Who are you? What are you? Why? / I’m alive, I belong, I’ll be back” with absolute majesty. The solid “Ear In The Wall” pounds and thumps before picking up the pace. It’s a satisfactory finish, but not much more than that. These three tracks are good but not great. Still, they are better than the often-generic tracks that bands tend to tag onto the ends of these sort of collections. If the idea was to create interest in the next studio album, they succeeded. The next studio album with Dio was 2009’s The Devil You Know under the Heaven & Hell name, which was basically more of Dio-fronted Black Sabbath. Ironically, the next and last full-length Black Sabbath studio album would be 2013’s 13 with Ozzy. The Ozzy albums have received plenty of expansions, remasters, and rereleases. The core Dio records represented by The Dio Years have also. Even one-offs such as Born Again and Seventh Star have gotten this treatment (though some of these have become scarce like the two-CD version of Seventh Star with a Ray Gillen live disc). Curiously, The Eternal Idol is the only album from the Tony Martin series to get any kind of updating. However, I’ve read reports that new editions of the other Tony Martin albums are coming (if so, might a box set of the complete Tony Martin albums be close behind?). Let’s hope so. I’m sure I’m not the only one, for example, that would like a physical copy of the long out of print Cross Purposes live with Martin singing on classics such as “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” “Children of The Grave,” and “The Mob Rules.”

Album:

Super deluxe reissue of BLACK SABBATHs seventh studio album "Technical ecstasy " incl. four CDs, 60-page hardcover book and poster. In the summer of 1976, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward headed to Miami to record Technical Ecstasy at the famed Criteria Studios. The band was coming off a world tour for their previous album, Sabotage, that had found their live performances evolving to include keyboards and synthesizers. These newly incorporated instruments and sounds were then introduced into the recording process on Technical Ecstasy. The new songs encompassed a wide range of styles from the hard charging “Back Street Kids” and single ballad “It’s Alright,” to the funky “All Moving Parts (Stand Still)” and progressive rock “Gypsy.” The Deluxe Edition presents a newly remastered version of the eight-track album, along with an entirely new mix of the album created by Steven Wilson using the original analogue tapes. With eight previously unreleased outtakes and alternative mixes. Among those are different mixes of “You Won’t Change Me” and “Rock ’n’ Roll Doctor,” as well as both outtake and instrumental versions for “She’s Gone.” The collection concludes with 10 previously unreleased live tracks recorded during the 1976-77 World Tour. The songs touch on different eras of the band’s history with early tracks like “Black Sabbath”, “War Pigs” (from Paranoid), “Symptom Of The Universe”, “Snowblind” and “Children Of The Grave” alongside new songs “Gypsy” and “Dirty Women.”The collection comes with an extensive hardback book featuring artwork, liner notes, rare memorabilia and photos from the era, plus a replica of the 1976-77 world tour concert book and a large colour poster of the iconic Hipgnosis (Storm Thorgerson/Aubrey Powell/Peter Christopherson) futuristic robots image which is perfect for framing.Black Sabbath embraced change in 1976 when the heavy metal innovators started managing themselves and began exploring different sounds on the band’s seventh studio album, Technical Ecstasy. BMG honours this daring album with a collection that includes a newly remastered version of the original, a brand-new mix by Steven Wilson, plus more than 90 minutes of previously unreleased outtakes, alternative mixes and live tracks.Technical Ecstasy is the seventh studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and released on 25 September 1976 by Vertigo Records. The album received mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success, peaking at number 13 on the UK Albums Chart and number 51 on the US Billboard 200 Album chart, later being certified Gold by the RIAA in 1997.

Album:

Returning to a heavier, more aggressive sound, in 1975 Black Sabbath delivered their sixth classic album in a row. Taking almost a year to complete, "Sabotage" is Black Sabbath at their best and possibly their most musically experimental. Brought up to date for 2021 is the original album newly remastered as well as a full concert recorded on the 1975 "Sabotage" Tour of North America. In addition to a selection of tracks from "Sabotage", this live album includes the Black Sabbath classics "War Pigs", "Iron Man" and "Paranoid". Also included in this super deluxe edition is a replica of the rare Japanese single "Am I Going Insane (Radio)", which completes the audio package for this fan-friendly deep dive into the classic Black Sabbath album, "Sabotage".Sabotage is the sixth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in July 1975. It was recorded in the midst of litigation with their former manager Patrick Meehan. The stress that resulted from the band's ongoing legal woes infiltrated the recording process, inspiring the album's title. It was co-produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and Mike Butcher.

Album:

Black Sabbath's fourth studio album, aptly titled Vol. 4, will be getting a "Super Deluxe" reissue in 2021 complete with 20 unreleased studio and live recordings adding to the collection.Rhino will issue the Vol. 4: Super Deluxe Edition on Feb. 12 as both a 4-CD and 5-LP collection. Both versions will come with extensive booklets featuring liner notes with quotes from all four band members, rare photos and a poster with previously unpublished early artwork for the album that used the working title Snowblind (which went on to be one of the album's most popular tracks). As for the bonus material that highlights this edition, fans can look for six previously unreleased studio outtakes that include the songs "Supernaut," "Changes" and an instrumental version of "Under the Sun." Each of the outtakes has been newly remixed by Steven Wilson using analog multi-tracks.You'll also get 11 additional studio recordings that encompass alternative takes, false starts and snippets of studio dialogue that help put the listener right in the studio and offer some insights into the making of the record. And finishing out the bonus material are live versions of "Tomorrow's Dream," "Cornucopia," as well as fan favorites "Paranoid" and "War Pigs" that were recorded in March 1973 during the band's U.K. tour. These recordings were initially targeted for a live album that was shelved but now get a spotlight with newly mixed audio using the original 16-track analog tapes. You can currently pre-order the collection via Rhino at this location. In addition, a remastered version of the song "Tomorrow's Dream" has been made available digitally ahead of the release and you can check that out via the platform of your choosing here.Vol. 4 peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, but has been certified platinum by the RIAA.Vol. 4 is the fourth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1972. It was the first album by Black Sabbath not produced by Rodger Bain; guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, was listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal.

Album:

Sourced from radio broadcast of live performance on Sept. 24th, 1989 in Vienna, Austria.Specialized Japanese label “Alive The Live” is doing a very nice job making available on CD rare live recordings from major acts in a good sound quality. They just released last December this “BLACK SABBATH – Vienna 1989“, a very good performance by Black Sabbath with Tony Martin on vocals, on the ‘Headless Cross Tour’.It’s especially interesting ‘cos there’s not many recordings documenting Black Sabbath with Tony Martin performing live. Additionally, the line-up is stellar: Neil Murray (bass), Jeff Nichols (keyboards) and the great Cozy Powell (drums).Tony Martin always was regarded as a stupendous vocalist, but at the time he recorded his first studio album with Sabbath, some critics argued he can’t perform with the same power on stage.“Vienna 1989” proves that Martin is one Hell of a shouter performing live, and feels comfortable with his band mates. The band rocks hard as well, with Tony Iommi dropping some killer solos, Nichols finding room to play some awesome keys/synths (much more than on the studio recordings), and Cozy Powell kills with his fiery beats.Sound quality is very good for this type of recordings, and while there’s some bootlegs floating around, this Japanese “Alive The Live” release sounds better and nicely packaged.

Line-Up:

Tony Martin – lead vocals
Tony Iommi – guitars, producer
Cozy Powell – drums, percussion, producer
Jeff Nichols – keyboards
Neil Murray - bass

Album:

Over the past 20 years, tribute albums have become so common that it’s nearly impossible to find a new way to honor an act. However, the ‘The Many Faces of Black Sabbath,’ which will be released in the U.K. on Nov. 3, takes a unique approach. As Brave Words notes, the set spreads out 42 songs over three CDs, with each disc having a separate theme. The first, ‘The Players (and More),’ features mostly projects that have involved past and present members of Black Sabbath. This includes Dave Mustaine‘s cover of Alice Cooper‘s ‘School’s Out,’ which had Eric Singer and Bob Daisley. The disc is filled out with a few version of Sabbath songs, such as Vince Neil‘s take on ‘Paranoid.’The second disc is comprised of metal bands from around the world, including Germany and Argentina, paying tribute to Black Sabbath. Three songs from Ozzy Osbourne‘s solo career, ‘Mr. Crowley,’ ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Bark at the Moon,’ also appear. ‘The Legacy,’ which closes out the box, brings together many of today’s best-known “stoner rock’ groups, showing the influence that Black Sabbath have had throughout their career.

Album:

This 2 CD compilation concentrates on the 'classic' Sabbath days, when Ozzy Osbourne was lead singer, though it contains a couple of notable post-Ozzy tracks such as "Heaven and Hell" and "Turn Up the Night". It also includes all the tracks you'd expect from such a compilation; "Black Sabbath", "NIB", "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Electric Funeral", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and "Spiral Architect" all make an appearance. One year ago, I was a good Sabbath fan. However, the only album I had was Paranoid. Then, my brother gave me this compilation and because of that I am a even BIGGER Sabbath fan now.The compilation focuses mainly on the Ozzy-era: in fact, only three songs of it don't feature Ozzy Osbourne as the vocalist. On one hand, I recognize that that was the best Sabbath era. But on the other hand, I think that a compilation must contain songs of the other periods of the band, so that you can have a better vision of how the band improved over the years. Why not throw in a few Tony Martin songs? Or more Dio ones? The lack of variety is, indeed, my biggest complaint about this album. On the first disc, we have a good collection of the best songs of their first three albums. From the revolutionary Black Sabbath to the complex War Pigs, from the mellow Planet Caravan to the heavy Into the Void - everything is there. In the second disc, we have 13 songs of the other Ozzy-era albums, 2 of the Dio-era and 1 of the (short) Ian Gillan-era. However, the selection of songs isn't very good - in my opinion, a Sabbath compilation MUST contain Sabbra Cadabra and National Acrobat! Where are those two classics? However, Dirty Women deserves a special mention as it is one of the most underrated Sabbath songs ever and finally is featured on one of their compilations! Yay!So, if you need an introduction to Black Sabbath, buy/download this Best Of, you will get a pretty nice impression of the band (or, at least, an impression of its early days).Concluding, a solid compilation but with too many songs featuring Ozzy. Next time throw in some songs of the other Sabbath periods, ok?80 points- Some flaws here and there, but a good compilation.

Ozzy Osbourne Vocals (tracks 1.1-16, 2.1-13)

Their lyrics dealt with darker issues than most conventional rock as well.Accordingly, the "doom" genre name came from their "Paranoid" release, with the song called "Hand of Doom." Album:

Nativity in Black is the name of two Black Sabbath tribute albums that came out in the 1990s and 2000s. The albums were recorded with various heavy metal bands paying tribute to Black Sabbath for their influence on the heavy metal genre of rock music. All of the tracks in Nativity in Black are covers of classic Black Sabbath material from the Ozzy Osbourne era, mostly by heavy metal bands. The name comes from the commonly assumed, but incorrect, meaning of the song title "N.I.B.". Also, the name of the album is a play on words, referring to Black Nativity - traditional Christmas carols sung in gospel style, quite common in the 60's; Black Sabbath's first Nativity in Black tribute album was released a couple of months before Christmas of '94.The band Bullring Brummies is made up of Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward, vocalist Rob Halford (not long out of Judas Priest), Obsessed/Vitus guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Fight guitarist Brian Tilse and Jimmy Wood on harmonica. Their cover of "The Wizard" on the first volume is their only recording, the musicians coming together specifically for this recording. According to Tony Iommi at the time, it was intended to be him / Butler / Ward on the track with Halford, as they had laid down tracks for the song. I.R.S., however, would not permit Iommi to be included so he thought the project was dead. Gloria Butler, however, proceeded with Weinrich and Tilse being brought in to replace Iommi on the track. Upon discovering this, Iommi fired Gloria Butler, prompting Geezer Butler to quit Black Sabbath yet again. The live recording of "War Pigs" by Faith No More was previously included on the band's live album, Live at the Brixton Academy.1000 Homo DJs' version of "Supernaut" was originally released as a 12-inch single in 1990.The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on 4 December 2000.Bob Chiappardi of Concrete Marketing was executive producer for the album.Megadeth's cover of "Paranoid" received a Grammy nomination in 1995 for 'Best Metal Performance'

Album:

Album:

To mark the beginning of ‘The End’ world tour in January 2016, the Rhino label release two-CD and two-LP deluxe editions of Black Sabbath’s first three studio albums – Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master Of Reality – plus a reissue of the 2002 live collection Past Lives…Each of the studio album deluxe editions contain the 2012 remastered versions of each album (previously, only available on digital formats) and – fittingly, as Black Sabbath return to North America to launch their farewell tour – additional discs with out-takes that are previously unreleased in the States (although issued on 2009 European deluxe editions).Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward made their debut as Black Sabbath in 1970 with the band’s self-titled album. The new deluxe edition contains outtakes from the 1969 recording sessions, alternate versions of Black Sabbath and N.I.B., plus two versions of the UK single Evil Woman (Don’t Play Games With Me).The follow-up album, Paranoid, also released in 1970, achieved staggering success, going four-times platinum and this reissue includes alternate lyric versions of Paranoid and the dreamily psychedelic Planet Caravan, plus instrumental versions of War Pigs and Iron Man among others. The expanded edition of Master of Reality (first released in 1971) presents eight studio out-takes including alternate takes on Solitude (featuring different guitar tuning), Sweet Leaf and Children Of The Grave. In addition to these studio album reissues, comes Past Lives, a compilation of live performances recorded between 1970 and 1975 that was originally released in 2002. This is also available in two-CD and two-LP formats and includes live versions of 18 Sabbath tracks. All the CD sets are presented in digipaks with artwork similar to the ones that were previously released outside North America and with the same liner notes. The double LPs are pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl and delivered in gatefold sleeves.Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality and Past Lives are reissued on 22 January 2016, two days after The End tour kicks off in Omaha, Nebraska.
