Bio:

1994 was a group formed by throaty singer Karen Lawrence in 1978, after she left the L.A. Jets. The same year, Lawrence composed "Prisoner (Love Theme From the 'Eyes of Laura Mars')," immortalized by Barbra Streisand. Lawrence also backed Aerosmith on Draw the Line. Guitarist Brad Whitford tagged along for 1994's self-titled inaugural, helping out on one track, "Heleana." Acclaimed Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas was also in tow. He helmed the entire debut, as well as the 1979 follow-up, Please Stand By. Lawrence went on to dabble in new wave as Karen Lawrence and the Pinz, and then backed Graham Parker. Douglas also produced Lawrence's '90s band, Blue By Nature, which included Rick DuFray, another (albeit momentarily) Aerosmith axeman. At the turn of the century, Lawrence lent her powerful pipes to Slash's Snakepit on Ain't Life Grand, yet another Douglas production.

Karen Lawrence is an American singer and songwriter who has worked with the L.A. Jets, 1994, Karen Lawrence and the Pinz and Blue by Nature. She sang backup vocals on "Get it up" from Draw the Line by Aerosmith and also sang on a Jeff Beck album.A stage performer continually since the age of 9, she fronted her first band, a blues outfit, at the age of 13. As front woman for the A&M band 1994: (produced by Jack Douglas ), Lawrence’s distinctive and emotive vocal stylings frequently put her on international critics’ "Best Female Singer" lists. Wrote Kerrang!... "it was 1994:’s Karen Lawrence who gave the others the choice of being second best or giving up".In addition to lead vocal and writing credits on Jeff Beck’s Epic/Legacy release Beckology, Lawrence’s most notable coup was composing "Prisoner (Love Theme from Eyes of Laura Mars)", immortalized by Barbra Streisand. Over 4 times platinum, the song has been identified in songbooks as one of the one hundred best love songs.Blue by Nature was formed in March 1993, when Lawrence and her collaborator of 14 years, rhythm guitarist Fred Hostetler, joined up with longtime friend Rick Dufay. Dufay, a former Aerosmith axeman, delivered an explosive and provocative guitar sound to the band. Four years and three critically acclaimed CD’s later, Dufay left to pursue a solo career and the torch was passed to young Brad Ayers. Ayers crisp Buddy Guy like riffs appear on the Hard Daze release. Shortly after the CD was finished, his promising career ended when he died of natural causes.

Album:

1994 were one of the greatest North American hard rock bands that time and tide has indeed forgotten. Fortunately Rock Randy Records ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ the band’s debut “1994“, with four bonus tracks, an album you need to check if you love Heart / Ann Wilson.Signed in a blaze of publicity to the mighty A&M label, produced by studio wizard Jack ‘Aerosmith’ Douglas and hailed as the next big thing, 1994 never quite made the commercial impact all had hoped for. When released, Geoff Barton, writing for Sounds magazine (now Editor of Classic Rock Magazine), made no secret of his love for 1994’s self-titled debut album, acclaiming it as “one of the year’s best releases – a deadly yet cool combination of Heart and Aerosmith”.Born and raised in Anaheim, California, Karen Lawrence grew up in a musical family. Aged 19, she fronted L.A. Jets, recording a self-titled album in 1976. But soon their label dropped the band. Then Karen and drummer John Desautels decided to go on under the name of 1994, adding guitarist Steve Schiff and bass player Bill Rhodes into the line-up.Legendary producer Bob Ezrin was interested in the band, but at the time he was very busy, then recommended his friend engineer Jack Douglas (Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith) get in touch with 1994.Impressed by Lawrence vocals, Douglas started to write songs with her, and soon landed a recording contract with A&M.Recorded y produced by Douglas at The Record Plant Studios in New York, 1994’s debut still sounds fresh today. The album is a first rate collection of songs in the American melodic hard rock tradition, similar to Heart but more rockin’ and smokin’.All songs are good, being my favorites the haunting “Heleana” and the hot “Radio Zone”. On many tracks the band sounds blusier ala Aerosmith-with-female-vocals, as on the great “Anastasia” (Brad Whitford of Aerosmith guest on guitars), another favorite.1994’s self titled debut is one of the first, and best, American female-fronted rock albums ever, which has stood the test of time thanks to its timeless songwriting and the excellent classy production. This is one of the very first Rock Candy releases, as usual, with a great remastering job plus an interesting essay about 1994 in the booklet.

Album:

Fronted by the charismatic Karen Lawrence, 1994 were one, in a long list, of great North American female-fronted hard rock bands emerging on the back of the success of Heart and Pat Benatar. Their sophomore record "Please Stand By…" was one of the strongest albums in the genre from the era, superbly remastered by Rock Candy Records released for the first time on CD including 4 lovely bonus tracks.Who couldn’t love the vocals of the lovely Karen Lawrence? A particularly versatile singer who could just as easily strip the paint off your woodwork with her throaty roar as caress your ears with her beautiful melodies. The main difference with 1994's debut was new guitarist Rick Armand (and bassist Bill Rhodes, who plays more guitar than bass here), resulting in a little more varied material. The opening title-track is a great upbeat song, and the track the original LP ended with - the raucous ‘Keep Ravin’ On’, is perhaps the heaviest thing 1994 ever recorded. Both ‘Wait For Me’ and ‘Stop The Heartache’ are nicely arranged Heart-like mid-paced songs with soaring vocals and catchy melodies, whilst ‘Our Time Will Come’ is an impressive power ballad with an inspired guitar solo. The highpoint of the album is the killer hard rocker ‘So Bad’ with it’s multiple stereo guitar parts and pounding bass lines, not to mention a brilliant vocal performance from Ms. Lawrence. There are four bonus tracks on this Rock Candy reissue, of which ‘Back In Your Arms’ is the best, a poppy yet rockng mid-paced track that deserved to be included in the final tracklist.‘Get It Up, Get It Right’ is a lively rock ’n’ roller in with a raw delivery, and 1994’s version of ‘You Better Run’, although good, trails behind the versions by Pat Benatar and Toronto. Also interesting to hear is the alternate ‘analogue’ version of ‘Our Time Will Come’.With another great production job from legendary Aerosmith / Alice Cooper man Jack Douglas, this Rock Candy digitally remastered reissue sparkles with power and clarity and I’m still hearing sounds that I’d never heard before in the years that I’d been listening to the vinyl LP.Paul Suter’s sleeve essay tells the usual sad story of lack of record company support and a band falling apart under the pressure, which is a shame because 1994’s sophomore release is still better than most albums of it’s ilk.
