Bio:

"The Night Flight Orchestra" started like so many others as an innocent yet serious drunken idea when Björn Strid (Soilwork) and David Andersson (Mean Streak, session Soilwork) were on the road together somewhere in North America in 2007. Björn and David were bonding over what they considered "classic" or not, from rock n roll conspiracies to being arrested in a lobby with nothing but leather pants on. All those scenarios, fictional or real, needed a soundtrack. They also came to think that whether you're on a metal tour or not, a lot of classic rock songs say it all and can really lend you a helping hand and make you forget about everything, especially when in motion or travelling. The classic escape. The never-ending road trip. The transatlantic night flight. It may sound simple and naive but what it all comes down to is that we all need that soundtrack to feel extra special, whether you have been arrested in a lobby or not. It didn't take long before bass player Sharlee D' Angelo (Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars) joined forces as well as keyboard player Richard Larsson (Von Benzo) and drummer Jonas Källsbäck (Mean Streak). The goal was to reclaim the 70's/early 80's sense for classic melody, the forgotten recipe to a timeless song, preferably a song mentioning a city, street name or an exhilarating alcoholic beverage. Anything that will have you spitting out the word 'classic'. From "Tarot Woman" to "Badlands", from "Rhiannon" to "Running on Empty", from "Blind Man" to "Night Moves", from "Deuce" to "Separate Ways", from "Elected" to "Set me Free". The list goes on. It's all about reclaiming the "classic".

Album:

Founded by Björn Strid (Soilwork), David Andersson (Soilwork) and Sharlee D' Angelo (Arch Enemy), THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA surprised us with their great debut CD three years ago, presented here on the blog.Despite its members Metal origins, The Night Flight Orchestra is a pure classic rock project which has a new album entitled "Skyline Whispers" that will be released on June 9th, 2015, via Coroner Records. The goal here is to reclaim the late '70s / early '80s sense for classic melody, the forgotten recipe to a timeless song. There's many tributes in the way the songs are composed, arranged and executed, taking the curves very nice with a hard rockin' swing. Björn has a great voice, and here he really blossom, no growl, just a voice that is incredibly powerful and plenty of colors."Sail On" opens in full late seventies fashion with vintage Hammond organs, a blasting bass line, candy-floss pianos and traditional hard rock guitars. A racing mix of Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash and Deep Purple all together. Then "Living for the Nighttime" is just infectious. A Kiss guitar riff circa Dynasty over a a melody that will have you bobbing your head and tapping your feet. This has summer time jam all over it.There's more like this yet more early '80s L.A. injected "I Ain't Old, I Ain't Young", almost AOR in its foundation.Björn's vocals really shine on the ELO sounding "Stiletto" that really balances between the guitar, the catchy keyboards and the bouncy rhythm section."Lady Jade" is inspired by some seventies hard rock psych, "All the Ladies" is driven by a breezy, poppy melody, while "Demon Princess" returns to a mysterious hard rock groove."The Heather Reports" ends the album via a true 'tour de force' blending hard rock, progressive, jazz rock, some Santana-like fusion, etc, all into a stupendous jam.At this point, The Night Flight Orchestra is much more than a side project for these metallers. If you are new to them, there's not a single heavy metal riff or song structure here on their new album "Skyline Whispers".Call it Classic Rock if you want, but the guys mix much more than traditional hard rock here; there's disco, psych, R&B, pop and as said, a Californian touch very close to late seventies AOR / FM rock. All is done with an extreme professionalism, attention to detail, and cleverly produced / mixed sounding retro yet powerful and up-to-date.Don't miss this one: very, very interesting.

Sharlee D'Angelo - Bass (Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars, Witchery, Mercyful Fate, ex-Illwill, ex-King Diamond, ex-Facelift, ex-Sinergy, ex-Dismember (live))

Album:

Singer Björn Strid: "'Amber Galactic' is a relationship drama set in space, the first classic rock space opera on double vinyl. As seasoned musicians, we’re taking this project seriously, although we might come across as slightly retro-futuristic at times, there's no irony involved. It's just us trying to shape our future into a place where our race is led by female space commanders with pearl necklaces and a quasar sense of gravity. 'Amber Galactic' is about setting free from genre boundaries and expectations that are put on people like us. We just want to create music that we would like to hear ourselves, but that isn’t only for us. The Night Flight Orchestra is here to set you free, to invite you to enjoy music in whatever form it is presented. For this particular journey, we'd like you to follow us into space, but who knows where we'll go next! After entering the NFO universe, you won't ever be the same!" When asked about the direction of NFO within the realm of classic rock, Strid explains with a chuckle: "Most other classic rock bands sound like weed or LSD - we sound like cocaine." Amber Galactic was recorded at Handsome Hard Studio in Lund, Sweden. The album follows The Night Flight Orchestra's two previous releases, 2012’s "Internal Affairs" and 2015’s "Skyline Whispers".

Album:

After taking the world of rock music by storm with last year's surprise hit "Amber Galactic", which also got nominated for a Swedish Grammy in the process, and leaving people speechless after a breathtaking first European tour in November/December, Swedish classic/progressive rock supergroup The Night Flight Orchestra has completed the works on an impatiently awaited next album. Today the band reveals details of that upcoming album, entitled "Sometimes The World Ain't Enough". Just like 2017's "Amber Galactic", the album will feature two different cover artworks for the regular and limited editions. The album is set for release on June 29, 2018 via Nuclear Blast and will contain 12 brand-new songs. The limited first edition digipak CD as well as the vinyl will also feature an exclusive bonus track. The Japanese version will also feature an additional bonus track."Sometimes The World Ain't Enough" was again produced by the band themselves and was recorded at Handsome Hard Music / Larsson Music Studio as well as Nordic Sound Lab in Skara, Sweden. Mixing duties were taken on by the band's guitarist/percussionist Sebastian Forslund and mastering was done by Thomas ”Plec” Johansson at The Panic Room.Soon, TNFO will descend from their extraterrestrial orbit and take over your hometown. The place you thought you knew will for one very special night become a palace of sin, where the champagne hits you harder, the stakes are higher and all the women are undercover space commanders. And on top of all that, the band will put on the rock show of the year, guaranteed to blow your mind. Can you handle it?

Album:

Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes describes 1984s rite of passage blockbuster ‘The Karate Kid’ as “utterly predictable and wholly of its time, but warm, sincere, and difficult to resist.” The same could be said of Sweden’s The Night Flight Orchestra’s (TNFO) 5th record ‘Aeromantic’, which despite being slated for release in 2020 (February 28th via Nuclear Blast), is a genuine sounding spiritual successor to any number of rock-oriented pop records released in the mid-1980s.The sugary sweet driving anthem “Curves” is a perfect pop song, and the music video writes itself. Singer Soilwork’s Björn Strid open shirted and clad in white, barrels his way down the California freeway in a Camaro IROC on his way to meet his bandmates at a yacht party… “Lights descending on the freeway/I’m a million miles from home…” The video flashes back to an argument between Strid and an awesomely 80’s styled video vixen. Simply add a few slow-motion shots of champagne flutes breaking, and voila instant hit! “Curves I’m trying to say I’m sorry/Curves I don’t know what to do/Curves I’m here if you still want me/And I’m trying to somehow make it up to you/Whoa! /To you!” The ultra-masculine, straight-faced gusto of Strid’s confident croon over hooky synthesizers, funk-lite guitars, bass-in-your-face, and four-on-the-floor drums is impossible to resist. In fact, it’s so genuinely retro that I’m pretty sure that “Curves” is just as much a tongue in cheek faux-machismo reference to the anatomy of the female subject of the song as it is to the winding freeway. The sappy ballad “Golden Swansdown” doubles down on “Curves” retro sentimentality with an electric piano sound that’s straight out of a Peter Cetera song, a big chorus, and an even bigger guitar solo.“If Tonight is our Only Chance” is another record highlight. Keyboardist Von Benzo’s Richard Larsson’s melodic synth riff plays off of a minor chord sequence played over a danceable bouncy beat courtesy of TNFO’s secret weapon—an expert rhythm section comprised of bass player Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars) and drummer Jonas Källsbäck (Mean Streak). Synth arpeggios ride the spare gentle gallop and stuttering melodies of the verses, before the slick refrain of the chorus with its windmill guitar chords and ear-worm melody, bores its way into our hearts and minds like coke snorted from a golden pinky nail. The lively title track splits the difference between Night Ranger and ABBA. Disco beats rub fringe jacketed elbows with synth arpeggios, phased falsetto background vocals, and an oversized chorus. “Aeromancy” is defined as a “divination conducted by interpreting atmospheric conditions,” but TNFO has claimed the word in the name of the Mile-High Club. In a move frequently employed in the set, a slightly darker middle-eight is followed by a “blink and you’ll miss it” guitar break that hints at David Andersson’s (Soilwork) metal origins. These fleeting glimpses are the closest the record comes to the metal that the band members have built their career on.The second half of the record sidesteps TNFO’s Yacht Rock tendencies to some extent by introducing some heavier and proggier moments. This mostly takes the form of tight dynamic synthesizer led workouts that recall some of Arena Rock’s more progressive tendencies. The dazzling instrumental breaks in “Taurus”, “Carmencita Seven”, and “Dead of Winter” belie the record’s understated in-service-to-the-song musical proficiency, and while the textured gypsy scale synths at the beginning of “Sister Mercurial” don’t do a whole lot to enhance the song, they serve as a welcome change in atmosphere. In general, I’m flying high on the perfect execution and pure fun of ‘Aeromantic’, but the one minor criticism I could level at the record is that it feels a little overlong. While each song works well, the formulaic nature of the set gets a bit tedious at times. Consider it a very minor complaint. If the idea of members of your favorite extreme metal bands playing schmaltzy, 80s AOR makes you angry, then: a). lighten up, and b). there’s nothing to see here. For the rest of you, The Night Flight Orchestra’s new record ‘Aeromantic’ is the shockingly well-executed and undeniably catchy soundtrack to all your favorite, decades-old pop-culture referencing American movie montages.

Line Up:

Björn "Speed" Strid - Vocals (Blinded in Bliss, I Legion, Soilwork, Terror 2000, ex-Darkane, ex-Dog Faced Gods, ex-Coldseed, ex-Highball Shooters)

Album:

The Night Flight Orchestra is back, the band that formed as an idea of friends from several well-known rock/metal bands (Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Mean Streak) back almost a decade ago and has been dropping jaws ever since. With 5 albums already under their belt, 2 nominations for the Swedish Grammies, countless live shows and praises from fans and media alike, the TNFO members have steadily upped their game when it comes to paying tribute to a decade that influences all sorts of people and even industries to this day: the 80s. With hits like "Domino", "Lovers In The Rain", "West Ruth Ave", "Divinyls" or "This Time", the band manages to maintain a variety of vibes and emotions within every album. From hard rockers, poppy digressions to progressive epics, disco-esque songs and almost cheesy yet loveable ballads.Enter 2020, TNFO had just released their recent record "Aeromantic" and kicked off their European tour in support of it, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Björn Strid, the AOR dictator helming this exceptional collective called TNFO, recalls: "We made it one week into the tour after some absolutely amazing shows and then it all went south and we had to go home. Just about everyone on the tour got sick when they came home, with varied conditions." The band didn't step back and accepted the situation, but decided to do what to do best instead: "It was pretty clear after some months into the Covid madness, that it was here to stay and that we weren't gonna be able to tour for quite some time. So we made the best out of it. The remedy was simply to hit the studio again as soon as everybody was well again. It ended up being an incredibly creative 1,5 years and so many amazing songs came out of it."With all that new greatness up the sleeves, TNFO is ready to take the world by storm again! Even though coming up with a setlist for the scheduled tour starting in September may prove to become problematic according to the AOR dictator: "Making a setlist might end up being a nightmare ha ha ... I would be up for doing only songs off Aeromantic I and Aeromantic II since that's really where we're at right now, but I think most of our the Midnight Flyers would like to hear some old stuff too. Maybe we could get away with it as long as we play "West Ruth Ave" as the ending song and create the good old conga train."
