Info:

Tygers of Pan Tang are a heavy metal band, part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. They formed in 1978 in Whitley Bay, England, and were active until 1987. The band reformed in 1999 and continue to record and perform. The name is derived from Pan Tang, a fictional archipelago in Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné fantasy series whose wizards keep tigers as pets. The Tygers of Pan Tang was originally formed by Robb Weir (guitar), Richard "Rocky" Laws (bass), Jess Cox (vocals) and Brian Dick (drums). They played in working men's clubs[1] and were first signed by local independent label Neat Records before MCA gave them a major record deal. After several singles, they released their first album, Wild Cat, in 1980. The album reached No. 18 in the UK Album Chart in the first week of its release.Subsequently John Sykes (formerly of Streetfighter, later in Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder) was added as second guitarist. Jess Cox had a falling out with the others and quit, to be replaced by Persian Risk vocalist Jon Deverill. This lineup released Spellbound in 1981.Sykes quit after the release of the third album, Crazy Nights, to audition for Ozzy Osbourne's band. He was replaced by ex-Penetration guitarist Fred Purser who had to learn the set in two days before touring.Tygers of Pan Tang's fourth album, The Cage, was released in 1982. The band then had a disagreement with MCA, who were not prepared to promote them unless they agreed to play more cover recordings (following the band's hit with "Love Potion No. 9"). They subsequently tried to break free from their contract, but MCA's demands exceeded the willingness of any other record company to pay to free the band, and the band broke up in frustration.John Sykes later achieved success with Thin Lizzy and then Whitesnake, and as a guitarist in Japan. In 1985, Jon Deverill and Brian Dick reformed the band with Steve Lamb (formerly of Sergeant) on guitar, Neil Sheppard on guitar, and ex-Warrior, ex-Satan member Clin Irwin on bass. Dave Donaldson later replaced Clin Irwin. Meanwhile, Robb Weir and Jess Cox formed the spin-off band Tyger-Tyger.The reformed Tygers of Pan Tang released The Wreck-Age in summer 1985 through Music for Nations, and Burning in the Shade in 1987, through Zebra Records. Burning in the Shade received poor reviews and they disbanded again.Various compilations and live albums were produced by the band's two first labels, Neat Records and MCA.During the 1998 Wacken Open Air festival, Jess Cox joined on stage with Blitzkrieg, playing three old Tygers songs. The audience's response was very positive, and a year later, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tygers of Pan Tang and the 10th Wacken Open Air, the band was invited to play on the main stage. Brian Dick and Rocky were unable to join the band, but the Tygers (now Jess Cox and Robb Weir, backed up by Blitzkrieg guitarist Glenn S Howes, bassist Gavin Gray, and drummer Chris Percy) did perform. Recordings of their performance resulted in the Live at Wacken album. In 2000, Robb Weir reformed the band as the only original member. The other musicians were Tony Liddell (vocals), Dean Robertson (lead guitar), Brian West (bass), and Craig Ellis (drums). They released Mystical through Z-Records. They toured in several festivals, but eventually were dropped by Z-Records in 2002, due to poor record sales. The band went on to produce the split album The Second Wave: 25 Years of NWOBHM with Girlschool and Oliver/Dawson Saxon on Communique Records, and in 2004 released Noises in the Cathouse with new singer Richie Wicks who although a singer by trade was at the time still playing bass in Angel Witch.Later that year, Richie Wicks left and was replaced by Italian vocalist Jacopo Meille. Wicks later joined Shadowkeep, appearing on their 2008 album The Hourglass Effect, before leaving in 2009. As of 2010, he was the vocalist in Heavenly Hell, a Dio-era Black Sabbath tribute band, and in 2013 he commenced fronting the band Black, White & Purple with fellow ex-Angel Witch guitarist Keith Herzberg and current Praying Mantis drummer Gary MacKenzie, along with Shadowkeep's ex-bassist Mark Fielden.Jon Deverill went on to work as an actor under the name of Jon De Ville, and as of October 2007 was performing in 'The Sound of Music' at the London Palladium with television star Connie Fisher. In October 2007, the band issued a limited edition five track EP titled Back and Beyond, which featured reworkings of three Tygers songs from the early 1980s, along with two new tracks taken from their forthcoming album. Animal Instinct was released on 19 May 2008, the first with vocalist Jacopo Meille. On 2011 bassist Gavin Gray retur in the band to replace Brian West. On 15 July 2011 it was announced that Tygers Of Pan Tang have signed an agreement with Rocksector Records for the worldwide release of their next studio album, with a current working title of "Ambush", provisionally planned for February/March 2012. The album came out on 24 September. In January 2013 the band announced via their official website that guitarist Dean Robertson had left the band and that they had begun the search for a replacement. The following month, the band announced Micky Crystal as their new guitarist.

Album:

The original release has now been fleshed out a little with the addition of three bonus tracks and should be required listening for devotees of melodic hard rock everywhere, with 'Highspeed Highway Superman' and 'Godspeak' emerging as the pick of a punchy package.Fast-forward thirteen years and 'Noises' has now been given a new lease of life via Angel Air. The revamped album features new artwork, a shuffled running order that redefines the dynamism of the original ten songs, and three bonus tracks which take the running time up to a hefty 75 minutes. The material certainly hasn't lost its bite over the intervening years, and songs like the huge, sprawling 'Master Of Illusion' is just one example of the band's ability to create a grandiose metal epic, while the haunting but power chord laden 'Cybernation' is as dystopian as its title suggests. The bonus tracks were recorded in 2004 and feature album cut 'Highspeed Highway Superman (Two Wheeled Version)' alongside the debut album classic 'Slave To Freedom' and debut single classic 'Don't Touch Me There'...they do round off a rather exciting re-issue rather nicely. In 2003 the band recorded “Noises From The Cathouse” which was produced by Chris Tsangarides who had produced the bands first two albums “Wildcat” and “Spellbound”. Normal label and distribution issues followed and thus one of the band’s heaviest albums became almost impossible to source. Now remastered with three bonus tracks recorded in 2004, this is a classic rock/metal album.

Album:

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal veterans TYGERS OF PAN TANG will release their new, self-titled album on October 21 on LP, limited picture LP, CD and through all digital services.Much has been written about the role the TYGERS played in the establishment of the movement and about the comings and goings within the band, but it is safe to say that the current lineup brings a creative stability and a shared camaraderie that will keep them together, playing live and making records for some time to come. The year began the signing of a new record deal with Scandinavia's premier rock and metal label Mighty Music, giving the band the opportunity to record the material they had written and honed in a burst of activity in late 2015. While the band were happy to produce themselves at The Blast Studio in Newcastle, they knew that the mix needed a fresh pair of ears.Mighty Music CEO Michael H. Andersen recommended Søren Andersen of Medley Studio for the mix of the album. Having heard and been impressed by material recorded and mixed by Søren Andersen (Glenn Hughes, Mike Tramp), the TYGERS sought out his services. Søren was only too happy to work with a band whose credentials were so firmly established. For the mastering, Harry Hess of HAREM SCAREM fame was the perfect man for the job.Leaving the music in his capable hands, next stop for the band was South America. Having no idea what reception they would receive they were overwhelmed by the fierce dedication of the fans in Brazil and Columbia, who, in many cases, had waited years for an opportunity to witness the live show. From South America to Europe without a breath and then on to North America where they headlined Chicago's Ragnarokkr Metal Apocalypse. In late August, first single "Only The Brave" will be released on 7" vinyl EP with exclusive bonus track "What Do You Say" from the album recording session. A music video for "Only The Brave" is being shot as we speak.Said Robb Weir, founder and guitarist of TYGERS OF PAN TANG: "Once in a while in an band's career comes a special time, a period where you feel it's all finally coming together and that time I'm proud to say is now! The new TYGERS album is finished, done and dusted and ready to unleash our 'Tygertastic,' audience. You're gonna love this one, it's a monster."

Album:

Metal maniacs, rejoice! I am proud to present to you: TYGERS OF PAN TANG; signed via Mighty Music, hailing from England - performing Heavy Metal, on their 12th Studio Album entitled: "Ritual" (released November 22nd, 2019).Since formation in 1978; the quintet in question have 17 Singles, 6 Live Albums; 2 Splits, 11 Compilations; 1 Demo, and 12 Studio Albums in their discography so far; I am introduced to their 12th album entitled: "Ritual", 11 tracks ranging at around 52:58… TYGERS OF PAN TANG arrange an intricately designed formula of hard-hitting Heavy Metal developments. "Worlds Apart" begins the record; conveying amplified adrenaline, boistrously bouncy haste & flamboyantly composed grooves execute electrifying energy. Forging harmonious hymns, fuelled into a barraged frenzy of dizzying melodies that manifest meticulous rhythms & a whirlwind of uniquely versatile vehemence. Embodying an upbeat ultility with wildly rushing remedies, concretely gnarly finesse & quintessential pursuits of profusely robust musicianship.Consisting of Jacopo Meille on vocals; the frontman demonstrates clean, high-pitched pipes & lungs of rawly rough persistency. "Destiny" revolves around a crunchy fabrication of industrious instrumentation; creatively complex dexterity from guitar duo Robb Weir & Michael Crystal implementing dynamically blistering virtuosity with rapidly swift nimbleness while showcasing quirky snappiness that thunders with potent vibrancies. "Rescue Me" supplies meaty rhythms that injects infectiously immersive instrumentation detail from audible bassist Gav Gray who thumps with steely precision; razor-sharp raspiness, solidly pummelling with organic substance & speedy weight. "Raise Some Hell" embellishes on experimental shreds that roar with ripping outbursts of stampeding symphonies, transistioned with traditional yet modernized styles.Craig Ellis on drums/percussion pounds the set with hammering catchiness; consistently battering into a dimension of hybridly rambunctious subtly, "Spoils Of War" relies on hook-laden riffs that keep you captivated & engaged while portraying sonically seamless solos that chug into a contagiously crystal-clear sound production proficiency. "White Lines" subjugates with salubriously strong rock overarchs that crafts creatively dextrous anthems, harnessing masterful panache & riveting styles that polish with progressively technical stabilities. "Words Cut Like Knifes" examines fluid momentum; primitively pulsating with gripping calibre, culminating an outrè of mellifluent yet punchline foundations – firepower & euphonic expertise. Contrasting a distinctively smooth systematic of rich talent, with tuneful silvery - with a dose of distorted frolicking for good measure."Damn You!" is a deadly belter; converging elegantly exquisite cords with striking savagery, variety & refreshingly original material that will remain memorable while having a humming grandure of grinding yet old-school songwriting vigour. "Love Will Find A Way" is a mid-tempo power ballad, assorted into fragments of radio-friendly combustion & while performing with venomously slick potential. "Art Of Noise" is another breakneck affair; excelled into a contaminating headbanger, charged into an epic incite of rowdy perseverence & uncompromised skill. Overall concluding "Ritual" with the prestigious finale called: "Sail On"; I can't help but say that TYGERS OF PAN TANG was most definitely a splendidly remarkably discovery, and makes me reminisce of when I first got into Heavy Metal - if you are this person today, these guys would be a great start.Bottom line; if you are looking for extremely hostile music of a malevolent nature, you may want to pass this ritual… but "Dad Metal" fans and JUDAS PRIEST/MOTÖRHEAD/IRON MAIDEN etc will relish this flourishing invention - check it out.

Album:

Cherry Red Records / Hear No Evil are releasing the 3-disc set “TYGERS OF PAN TANG – The Wreck-Age + Burning In the Shade 1985-1987“, expanded and remastered editions of the two albums from the mid-80s reformation of Tygers Of Pan Tang.Originally forming in Whitley Bay in the North-East of England in 1978, Tygers Of Pan Tang came to prominence as lynchpins of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, alongside Iron Maiden and Saxon. Singer Jon Deverill replaced original vocalist Jess Cox for the Tygers’ second major label album ‘Spellbound’, released on MCA in 1981. Despite Top 20 success with fourth album ‘The Cage’, following a minor hit with their cover of ‘Love Potion Number 9’, the band called it a day in 1984.But Deverill and founding drummer Brian Dick returned with this new ecarnation of the band. CD1 features 1985’s ‘The Wreck-Age’ which sported a more radio-friendly sound than the original band. With songs such as ‘The First (The Only One)’, ‘Dream Ticket’ and ‘Sweet Lies’, this near AOR direction was further explored for 1987’s ‘Burning In The Shade’ (CD2). Then we have a CD3 including previously unreleased material from the era. These albums are close perfection ’80s British Melodic Rock / AOR, now sounding stupendous with this pristine remastering.

Bio:

Album:

Robb Weir is never a man to take what he has for granted. Having led TOPT since the first album through a plethora of line-up changes, he recognizes that the current Tygers are probably the strongest since they were at the forefront of the NWOBHM. The original band, that made four albums for MCA Records, survived the unexpected departure of Jess Cox to run Neat Records and later John Sykes, who was bound for Thin Lizzy and a multi-millionseller with Whitesnake. What they didn’t survive was their greatest commercial success with the album “The Cage”. However, Weir, ever the optimist, formed a new version of the band to both play the old material and write songs that would represent this ‘new’ Tygers. The backbone of the band – Craig Ellis on drums, together with Jack Meille on vocals - has now been together for considerably longer than the first Tygers. They were recently joined by Francesco Marras on guitar and Huw Holding on bass. Francesco arrived via solo and session work that has made him a go-to guitarist and Huw has history of working with NWOBHM bands such as Blitzkrieg, Avenger and Holosade. Recording the EP “A New Heartbeat” to celebrate their resigning with Mighty Music, the Tygers demonstrated just how potent the new line-up was becoming. Rerecording two songs from the first album to compliment the two new songs on the EP gave listeners the chance to evaluate Francesco Marras’ contribution and the response was entirely positive. Following this with a tour that took in six countries across Europe, both Francesco and Huw have been amazed at the reponse to the new line-up. Fans old and new have turned up to lend their support to the continuing story of the Tygers. Now the band is all set for the release of new album “Bloodlines”. Recorded entirely by the musicians who comprise the current line-up, it is a tour de force of what made the NWOBHM such a potent force in music. The songs, all self-penned, successfully demonstrate just how well the core of Weir, Meille and Ellis has blended with the new boys. New Danish producer Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Moonspell, Sick Of It All) has brought a contemporary edge to the traditional Tygers sound and immediately bonded with the band, recognizing just what it was that they were looking for. Still metal at its core, the melodic vocals and exemplary guitar solos ensure that the songs are worthy rivals to the very best of their back catalogue. The last word comes from Robb Weir whose dream created the Tygers all those years ago. “I feel as confident with our new line-up as I did all those years ago when 'Wildcat' appeared on the shelves and it was given a unanimous thumbs up. Our recent live shows have demonstrated a harmony within the band and, coupled with the quality of 'Bloodlines', the potential to create music and perform live shows for some considerable time to come.”

Line-Up:

Jack Meille - vocals

Francesco Marras - guitar
Huw Holding - bass
Craig Ellis - drums

Album:

Exclusive here the just released Japanese Deluxe Edition of TYGERS OF PAN TANG 1985’s “The Wreck-Age”, a 2-disc set featuring a new remaster of the album, plus a bonus CD including demos and outtake from the same sessions.Originally forming in Whitley Bay in the North-East of England in 1978, Tygers Of Pan Tang came to prominence as lynchpins of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, alongside Iron Maiden and Saxon. Singer Jon Deverill replaced original vocalist Jess Cox for the Tygers’ second major label album ‘Spellbound’, released on MCA in 1981. Despite Top 20 success with fourth album ‘The Cage’, following a minor hit with their cover of ‘Love Potion Number 9’, the band called it a day in 1984.But Deverill and founding drummer Brian Dick returned with this new incarnation of the band, which sported a more radio-friendly sound than the initial era of the group.CD1 features ‘The Wreck-Age’, an album including songs such as ‘The First (The Only One)’, ‘Dream Ticket’ and ‘Sweet Lies’, commercial melodic tunes bordering the AOR sound of the mid-80s. CD2 features some early versions / demos, but mostly outtakes that never made it into the final track list.‘The Wreck-Age’ original production wasn’t the best, and this remaster shapes the best sound quality possible. The mini-LP format reissue replicates the original British LP cover which is cool. While this album isn’t in the vein of the hard rocking first Tygers LPs, if you like that ’80s British Melodic Rock / AOR sound you need to hear this 1985 record.

Album:

TYGERS OF PAN TANG release entitled “Big Game Hunting / The Rarities”, a collection of rare, intriguing tracks from the English rockers featuring an impressive number of 32 tracks on 2 CD’s, many of them previously unreleased, including live performances and demos.Well at least at the time of this release (2005) many of the tracks included were rarities, as later these were re-released in one way or another. But the sound quality here is very cool, the Nineties-type of remastering, balanced.“Big Game Hunting / The Rarities” gathers tracks from a number of sources that were available here for the first time and span almost the entire career of Tygers Of Pan Tang.Disc 1 features their first 7″ single ever recorded – ‘Don’t Touch Me There’ – along with the early First Kill demos and the Spellbound demos recorded in Newcastle (1981) featuring John Sykes on guitar. Wrapping up disc 1 are additional tracks recorded live from Nottingham’s Rock City (1981), again with Sykes on guitar.Disc 2 continues with the Nottingham show, followed by tracks taken from The Wreck-Age (1985) with original drummer Brian Dick and vocalist Jon Deverill. Many of you will prefer the sound of these tracks as are brighter than the remastered CD featured at 0dayrox yesterday. The second disc closes with tracks recorded from the Wacken Festival in Germany (1999) and features vocalist Jess Cox and original guitarist Rob Weir back in the band. This collection shows that whatever musical changes may occur, audiences will always be hungry for classic heavy rock, and TYGERS OF PAN TANG delivers.
