Zinatra was a Dutch hard rock band. The band released their debut album in 1988, which contained the single "Love or Loneliness", a song that was successful in the national music chart, peaking at #18.The following singles were "Somewhere" and "Lookin' for Love".Later the band was the opening act for David Lee Roth in his tour called Skyscraper. In 1989 the band performed a tour that went to South Africa and South America. In 1990, Robby Valentine joined the band as keyboardist, besides participating in the compositions. In spring 1990, the second album, called The Great Escape was released and charted at #72 in the Netherlands. The first single "There She Was", reached #48 in the Netherlands. The other singles from the album, "Love Never Dies" and "Two Sides of Love", did not enter into any music chart. In 1992 Robby Valentine left the band.Later the singer Joss Mennen also left the band to form the band Mennen.

Album:

This 2-CD Box including both albums housed into individual jewel case is the one to get - if you find it as it's out of print - as both LP have been remastered with a resulting pristine sound, plus a bunch (10 in total) of bonus tracks. This is the real Box / physical release titled "Rockumentary Part 1 & 2".The name Zinatra is synonymous of true European '80s AOR pomp / Melodic Hard Rock. Discovered by the producer Erwin Musper in 1986, they made their debut with the album of the same name two years later enjoyeing considerable chart success with such hit singles as “Love or Loneliness”, “Somewhere” and “Looking for Love”.Zinatra was the brainchild of bassist Ronal Lieberton featuring recruits from Dutch rock band Vandale including guitarists Gino Rerimassie, Sebastian Floris, drummer Ed Rokx and lead singer Joss Mennen. The album in question is a mixture of the second half of the Eighties European sound reminiscent of the more commercial moments of Europe and Treat. The Zinatra debut LP featured remarkable instrumental harmonies and melodies courtesy of the guitars and keyboards while lead singer Joss Menner puts admirable effort in his delivery though perhaps his full potential will be uncovered on the following album. To say that the songwriting on "Zinatra" debut is anthemic would be an understatement as each and every song features super-sized choruses and multiple sing-along passages.Other highlights include the unconventional “Name of the Game”, the outsider power-ballad “Hero” marking another hit single for South America, plus the feel-good upbeat “Heat of the Moment”.The bonuses are an excellent addition, including the alternate version of 'Looking for Love' originally titled 'Moving on sound', the unreleased 'Car lover', and more. From songwriting, performances and production, "Zinatra" delivers all what you expect from '80s Euro AOR heaven. It ticks all the right boxes. This remaster is great, clear and dynamic, all you need to enjoy this genre's cult classic.

This 2-CD Box including both albums housed into individual jewel case is the one to get - if you find it as it's out of print - as both LP have been remastered with a resulting pristine sound, plus a bunch (10 in total) of bonus tracks. This is the real Box / physical release titled "Rockumentary Part 1 & 2".The second Zinatra album, “The Great Escape”, originally released in 1990, is an AOR / melodic (hard) rock fest at its own right. The songwriting and instrumental part of the album is more focused and to the point, frontman Joss Mennen has stepped up as the singer raising his game manifold, but most importantly there is a young Robbie Valentine behind the keyboards also taking a leading role in terms of songwriting.Robby, for that matter, seems to have remained the outsider for his brief time in Zenatra having single handedly composed four of the songs on the album including the ballad “Lover Never Dies” a vocal duet between Valentine and Mennen as well as the midtempo AOR epic “Too Blind to See”, both glimpses of Robby’s solo work that would follow in the ‘90s.Interestingly enough Canadian AOR hero Paul Laine (Danger Danger) contributes four songs to the set list including the outstanding single “Two Sides of Love”, the melodic rocker “Only Your Heart” and the irresistible “Hold On”.Band founder Ronald Lieberton has his own moment of creative brilliance composing the album’s first single, the uplifting and playful “There she was”, only adding to the list of ‘80s AOR highlights featured on this remarkable second Zinatra album. The cover artwork of “The Great Escape” is conceptually very similar to that of the Final Countdown by Europe, also boasting the purple color which would become a trademark of Valentine’s solo works. This reissue include three collectible bonus, non album tracks.Zinatra's “The Great Escape” is nothing less than a rare highlight in ‘80s AOR / melodic hard rock that brought together all the elements that make for a substantial album with an identity of its own.“The Great Escape” also produced one of the greatest songwriters in technical AOR who would hold the torch for the genre from the ‘90s and onwards; Mr. Robby Valentine.A deserved pristine remaster on this essential CD.
