Bio:

Keel is an American heavy metal band founded in 1984 in Los Angeles, California. They are known for their rock anthem "The Right to Rock." The band was active until 1989, with a brief reunion in 1998. Keel reunited again in 2008 and toured in 2009 for their 25th anniversary.Keel was formed by former Steeler vocalist Ron Keel. The original members were Ron Keel on vocals, former Icon / Schoolboys member David Michael Phillips on guitar, Marc Ferrari on lead & rhythm guitars, Bobby Marks on drums and Kenny Chaisson on bass guitar. Within months, Phillips left to join King Kobra and was replaced by ex-Sexist guitarist Bryan Jay.This was the lineup for their 1984 debut album Lay Down the Law.After the album's release, Marks left and was replaced by Steven Riley, who subsequently left early in the recording of the band's second album to join W.A.S.P., and was in turn replaced by Dwain Miller, forming a lineup which would remain stable for almost 4 years. Their debut album caught the eye of KISS' Gene Simmons, resulting in his production of their second album, The Right To Rock, released on March 26, 1985. Their next and also Simmons-produced third album The Final Frontier was released on April 30, 1986. It included the single "Because the Night", a song that was co-written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen and had been a hit for Smith in 1978.In 1986, Keel won the Best Band of the Year award in the 2nd annual Metal Edge magazine reader's poll, beating such noted bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In 1987, the song "Rock & Roll Outlaw" (a cover from the 1978 self titled debut of Australian hard rock band Rose Tattoo) appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Dudes. Their fourth album, Keel, was released on June 21, 1987, recorded with producer Michael Wagener. An unreleased track from the album, Ferrari's "Proud To Be Loud", would eventually wind up on Pantera's Power Metal album, which Ferrari produced early in 1988.Ferrari & Jay both left in 1988, after touring in support of the Keel album. They were replaced by keyboardist Scott Warren, later in Dio, and Baton Rouge guitarist Tony Palmucci.Their fifth album, Larger Than Live, was released in 1989 with six new studio recordings, including a cover of the 1980 Humble Pie song "Fool for a Pretty Face". Also on the album were six live tracks recorded in March 1989. Following the shooting of the music video for the song "Dreams Are Not Enough" on that same year, Ron Keel announced the disbandment of Keel. In the 1990s, Ferrari wrote a gear column for Metal Edge magazine entitled "Power Sources", and went on to form Cold Sweat with among others ex-UFO guitarist Erik Gamans, who would release the album Break Out in 1990. After the demise of that group, Ferrari appeared in both Wayne's World movies (as the guitarist for Tia Carrere's band "Crucial Taunt") and formed the band Medicine Wheel, which released three CDs. In addition, he released two solo CDs and started a music publishing company called MasterSource, employing Ron Keel to write material for the library. Ferrari also recently wrote a book titled Rock Star 101.Bryan Jay and Dwain Miller went from Keel to forming a band called Dogbone, with ex-Riot vocalist Rhett Forrester, bassist Rob Thiessen and vocalist Eddie Salz.In 1998, members of Keel got together to release their sixth album Keel VI: Back in Action. It mainly consisted of unreleased material from their previous albums, including the aforementioned "Proud To Be Loud".The band's song "Speed Demon" (from The Right to Rock) is briefly heard on the 2002 movie Men in Black II, and appears on Mike Varney's U.S. Metal Vol. IV compilation.Ron Keel has pursued numerous musiefore forming the country metal band IronHorse in 2001. In 2006, Ron left IronHorse and formed K2 Featuring Ron Keel a year later. On November 2008, Keel reunited in time to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary. All the members from The Right to Rock era have rejoined except for Chaisson. The new bassist is Ron Keel's longtime friend, Geno Arce. Their first reunion show was held in Hollywood, CA, on January 24, 2009.In addition, the band played at the third annual Rocklahoma festival on July 2009.A reunion album, Streets of Rock & Roll was released in 2010, as well as a 25th anniversary edition of The Right to Rock featuring a brand new re-recorded version of the title song as a bonus track.

Album:

The Final Frontier is a 1986 album by the American glam metal band Keel. It was the band's second album to be produced by KISS bassist Gene Simmons. Videos were filmed for the tracks "Because the Night" (a Patti Smith Group cover) and "Tears of Fire".Space; "The Final Frontier". This is the voyage of the band Keel. Its mission; to party on, to seek out new rock and roll songs, and to go where no band has ever gone before....*Yes, Keel is at it again, and their album is harder and more rocking than ever. Even if you don't consider them to be real metal, they can still be entertaining to listen to. Why? 'Cos their songs are more aggressive and raunchier than any glam band you'd expect to hear. They've got some of the cliches that we hate about a lot of glam bands, but they've also got quite a few surprises for those expecting another "Livin' on a Prayer". That's right, let Keel take you on an interstellar journey beyond the farthest stars in the galaxy with their extreme rock n' roll. The follow-up to their already cool album, "The Right to Rock" is an even better album than before, since it's got more to offer for all who demand more aggressive songs. Even their cover song of Patti Smith's "Because the Night" is powerful and fantastic, delivering us some of the finest hard rock in the late 80's. It's haunting and and dark vibe gives us something more than a wimpy love song that the lyrics would suggest. Around this time, Motley Crue was giving us the much cliched "Girls, Girls, Girls", the poster child for glam bands in Los Angeles. Here, however, we get more aggressive rock songs, like "Rock and Roll Animal". Of course it's a bit cliche in some respects, but it's got that heaviness that we all crave, and a less annoying chorus. There's also the fact that it begins very soft with a driving bass line and soft guitars which eventually build up to a hard-rocking gem. The intro to that song makes the listener more anticipated for the awesome song that is to come, although the song could use less synthesized drums. Other than that, it's a very effective song. Even if it was slower than usual, the title track also has something for everyone. It's a hard and pounding number which contains a pretty effective riff and a pounding rhythm from the drums to make up for the slow tempo. Match that against your "Cherry Pie"!What makes "The Final Frontier" even better than the preceding album is the fact that the more radio-friendly songs are more few. Granted, we still do get some, and they can be stupid ("Just Another Girl" and "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" are pretty dumb songs, so it gets points off from there), there's less of them here than there are on "The Right to Rock". We get more power to our album, and for a glam band, that's really saying a lot. We get more of the hard-rocking songs that we know and love, and needless to say, "The Final Frontier" is a much more extraordinary album. One of these songs is "No Pain, No Gain", which is one of those driving and fast songs with a rocking riff that really defines the word "rock". It's the sort of rock n' roll that we all expect to come from any hard rock or metal band around during the time. Not a slow and moronic song about sex that has a more basic and wimpy hook, just this stuff. It's the high energy of "No Pain, No Gain" that really defines the atmosphere of hard rock and metal. "Arm and a Leg" is another potential candidate for a fan favorite. It's a raunchy and aggressive song that contains more harmonic chords that give its riff more of an edge, thus it's power is greatly enhanced. This is actually an album so good, that even the power ballad sounds good. That's right, you've read this correctly, the power ballad sounds good. Why? 'Cos it's actually got more potential than "Every Rose has Its Thorn". It contains a more haunting and quiet atmosphere to it, making it more unique in its own special way. Instead of making the song more glossy and messy, the synthesizers actually elevate the dark and eerie nature of the ballad. That's synthesizer use done right, right there. When a ballad has this kind of morose atmosphere, it's easier to relate to 'cos of the fact that it's more believable, that way we can actually take it seriously. "Tears of Fire" is one of only a select few power ballads that have actually been done right, since it's not so pretentious and overdone. It's a more serious song that's more down to earth due to its more haunting and goose-bump-inducing mystique. Sure, a lot of the choruses of the songs are more of the sing-along type, but they're not super-insanely annoying like any Bon Jovi song ever written. They're not so horrendously goofy, and actually contain a rock n' roll-like punch to them. Sing-along choruses are another cliche of many glam bands, but when they're done right, they're not the kind that you'd be easily irritated by. The ones on "The Final Frontier" are just the opposite, for even they can be good to listen to."Just Another Girl" and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" can easily be ignored, for they're just two songs that would be counted as "awful". Other than those songs, "The Final Frontier" is actually one of the greatest albums ever to be released by any glam band the world has ever known, and that's not a hyperbole. If only other glam bands could follow Keel's example and create albums just as good, if not better. Alas, that would never be, for moneymaking would always get in the way. The jury may still be out on whether or not Keel is truly a metal band, but with hard-rocking songs like "No Pain, No Gain", it would certainly suggest that it is.

Album:

Keel is the fourth album by the American glam metal band Keel, released on June 21, 1987. This was the last album to feature guitarists Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay, as they left the band a year later (although Jay can be heard on the live portion of the band's next release, Larger Than Live.) They eventually re-joined Keel in 1998 to release Keel VI: Back in Action and again in 2009 for the band's 25th anniversary. This was the band's first album since their 1984 debut Lay Down the Law to be produced by someone other than Gene Simmons. "Calm Before the Storm" was co-written by Jimmy Bain of Dio and Rainbow fame. Ron Keel is pretty infamous for his distinctive wail, it's his defining characteristic. On their self-titled album, Keel (the band) scales back the heaviness, and Keel (the man) uses his scream more tastefully. After the piss poor production of the otherwise solid "The Right to Rock", and the average production on the otherwise great "The Final Frontier", Keel finally enlists a world class producer in Michael Wagener, known for his work with Metallica, Megadeth, Accept and Dokken. The result is an album with substantially improved sound quality, and much tighter arrangements than previous efforts. Keel proves that they are capable musicians and songwriters that had simply been in need of a good producer from the beginning. I believe that if Keel had hooked up with Wagener or a similarly successful '80s metal producer such as Tom Werman earlier, they would have been just as huge as any other band from the time period.Wagener's presence is made apparent from the first track "United Nations". The band employed fans from the street to sing backing vocals on this track, creating a huge sounding chorus as the band declares that rock has the power to unite the world, and does not discriminate based on anything. Nothing this ambitious had been attempted by the band before. Wagener wisely keeps Ron Keel under control, which allows him to use his vocal to build the song rather than immediately giving his scream away, so when he finally wails "WE ARE UNITED" at the end of the last chorus, you feel it kick you square in the chest. On the rest of the album without hundreds of backing tracks, the harmonies are still substantial. As all five members of Keel are singers, the band lends itself to melodic harmonies better than almost any band of the day. The melodies themselves are better written this time around, and the songs arranged in a way to support them no doubt thanks to Wagener's contributions.Overall the heaviness of the previous three records is scaled back somewhat on this release. On most tracks, the vocal melodies are the main focus of the song, but unlike most melodic metal albums, everything is set up to support those vocal melodies perfectly. The guitar riffs are meant to provide a backdrop to the melody, not to overrun it. Prime examples are pop metal gems "Cherry Lane" and "I Said the Wrong Thing to the Right Girl". The riffs are strong and hooky, but not a way that detracts from the focus of the song. The one problem with these tracks is that the hyper polished backing vocals are a little too sappy and emotionally involved, but that is a minor complaint. The solos are era appropriate, but never feel flashy or uninspired. They fit within the confines of the song perfectly to support the whole. A less poppy and more mysterious number that is equally as catchy pops up in the second track "Somebody's Waiting". This "should have been a hit" track boasts all the melody of the two previously mentioned tracks, with substantially less cheese and more power. This track is much darker than the sugar frosted love tale of "Cherry Lane", and boasts a verse pre-chorus structure that is incredibly effective at building momentum into the payoff (the massive chorus). There are still balls out rockers such as "King of the Rock" which sports an absolutely massive backing vocal chorus that would put even Def Leppard to shame. There's also "It's A Jungle Out There" and "If Love Is A Crime (I Wanna Be Convicted), as well as the all American party anthem "4th of July", featuring fireworks sounds, and bear cans opening. These songs up the metal factor and Keel's primal scream, while sacrificing none of the sense of song-craft. The whole CD is recorded and mixed to absolute perfection, containing a sound that is both huge, and incredibly pleasant. It practically begs you to turn it up. Also included is the obligatory power ballad, but in this instance it was co-written by an outside friend. Jimmy Bain of Rainbow and Dio fame shares a co-writing credit on "Calm Before the Storm". As a result, it has far less sap and far more substance than most power ballads around that time. It featuring a piano piece that slowly builds until you're thrust into the storm at the song's climax, a multi-layered dynamic song built by the guitar prowess of Brian Jay and Marc Ferrari, and the strong rhythm section of Kenny Chaisson and Dwain Miller. While Keel may have sacrificed some of its heavy metal credibility with this album, they jump forward substantially in the song department. Much of this success is clearly a result of their new first-rate producer, but the band deserves credit. They had been improving with each album, culminating in their best written album, even if it's not their most thrilling or enjoyable. It's a more than worhty addition to any pop metal collection.

Album:

There’s great news for KEEL fans as the long out of print records The Final Frontier (1986) and Keel (1987) are being finally remastered by Rock Candy Records. Although the CDs are not available yet – released at retail stores November 15 – both can be purchased (autographed) via Ron Keel‘s website for $20.00 US each or as part of a $30.00 US bundle if you have a membership via patron.com/RonKeel.Self-titled “Keel”, with this remastering making the album sound better than ever: the dynamics are truly awesome.Operating from Los Angeles during the early to late-80s, Keel looked as if they could well be the next in line to follow hot on the heels of neighborhood bands such as Mötley Crüe, Dokken and Quiet Riot. They had it all; a charismatic frontman in Ron Keel, two smoking-hot guitarists and solid industry support.Kiss man Gene Simmons had produced their last two albums, helping to establish them as the next big thing. When it came time to record this, their fourth album simply titled “Keel”, they had done their homework and prepared a clutch of world beating anthems, all injected with the energy and enthusiasm of men expecting big results.Recruiting super producer Michael Wagener the band wasted little time in laying down the law at a Los Angeles studio, creating a sound that combined all the exciting elements of hard rock at the time.Wagener’s crystal clean production paid handsome dividends whilst two of the songs benefited by choice co-writes from Jack Ponti (Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Joe Lynn Turner) and Dio’s Jimmy Bain.Check out the terrific the album’s first single ‘Somebody’s Waiting’ (radio-ready melodic hard rock for the masses), the great power ballad ‘Calm Before The Storm’ (it shoulda been a hit), the catchy ‘Cherry Lane’, or the cheeky ‘I Said The Wrong Thing To The Right Girl’.An ‘inside track’ but always has been a favorite of mine: ‘Don’t Say You Love Me’ is in my opinion one of the best Keel songs ever, a near perfect pumping melodic rocker with a monster chorus and a terrific guitar work.Originally released in June 1987 via the MCA label, the album received a very positive reception but inexplicably failed to commercially realise its potential. And that was a shame as the album is a fine and near perfect example of red hot hard rock from an era that embraced the style & sound that Keel perfectly embodied. This fully remastered audio by Rock Candy specialists is excellent, and the 4000-word essay / backstory and rare photos included into the 16 page color booklet is really interesting. This is the first time “Keel” is being officially reissued / remastered, available now for the first time in 30 years.A terrific album in my book, and HIGHLY Recommended

There’s great news for KEEL fans as the long out of print records The Final Frontier (1986) and Keel (1987) are being finally remastered by Rock Candy Records. Although the CDs are not available yet – released at retail stores November 15 – they can be purchased via Ron Keel‘s website for $20.00 US each or as part of a $30.00 US bundle if you have a membership via patron.com/RonKeel.Today we have here in exclusive at 0dayrox “The Final Frontier”, with this remastering making the album sound better than ever. It’s truly fantastic.Keel was formed by former Steeler vocalist Ron Keel including him on vocals, former Icon / Schoolboys member David Michael Phillips on guitar, Marc Ferrari on guitars, Bobby Marks on drums and Kenny Chaisson on bass guitar.Within months, Phillips left to join King Kobra and was replaced by ex-Sexist guitarist Bryan Jay. This was the line-up for their 1984 debut album Lay Down The Law. After the album’s release, Marks left and was replaced by Steven Riley, who subsequently left early in the recording of the band’s second album to join W.A.S.P., and was in turn replaced by Dwain Miller, forming a line-up which would remain stable for almost four years.Keel’s debut album caught the eye of KISS‘ Gene Simmons, resulting in his production of their second album, The Right To Rock, released on March 26, 1985. The LP and the band’s shows were a sensation, and Keel was ready to explode. And this exactly happened with this, their next and also Simmons-produced third album “The Final Frontier” released on April 30, 1986. At the end of the year, Keel won the Best Band of the Year award in the 2nd annual Metal Edge magazine reader’s poll, beating such noted bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.Keel was not exactly part of the rising hair metal movement, however they took the catchiness from it and added a metal aggressive approach, always with melody as main focus.Just check “Rock and Roll Animal” or “No Pain, No Gain”, which is one of those driving and fast songs with a rocking riff that really defines the word “rock”. It’s the sort of rock n’ roll that we all expect to come from any hard rock or metal band around during the time. It’s the high energy of “No Pain, No Gain” that really defines the atmosphere of 80s hard rock and metal.“Arm and a Leg” is another potential candidate for a fan favorite. It’s a raunchy and aggressive song that contains more harmonic chords that give its riff more of an edge, thus it’s power is greatly enhanced. All that is complemented by more radio friendly yet still rocking numbers such as “Just Another Girl”, “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow”, the kinckin’ title track “The Final Frontier”, and their cover song of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night” is powerful and fantastic, delivering us some of the finest hard rock in the late ’80s. It’s haunting and and dark vibe gives us something more than a wimpy love song that the lyrics would suggest. This is actually an album so good, that even the power ballad sounds good nad not cheesy at all. Why? ‘Cos it’s actually got more potential than “Every Rose has Its Thorn”. It contains a more haunting and quiet atmosphere to it, making it more unique in its own special way. Instead of making the song more glossy and messy, the synthesizers actually elevate the dark and eerie nature of the ballad. That’s synthesizer use done right, right there.“The Final Frontier” is actually one of the greatest albums ever to be released by any glam-era Rock band the world has ever known, and that’s not a hyperbole. Keel got the hooks, the catchy choruses, and if you want, some cheesy melodies too – but a unique bite and raunchy attack. This third album is regarded as their finest moment, and it never sounded that good as on this Rock Candy remaster.

Album:

When in the early 80s Steeler, fronted by Ron Keel, broke up after Swedish guitar phenom Yngwie Malmsteen left to join Alcatrazz, frontman Ron Keel began assembling KEEL, a hand-picked line-up of great playing musicians that included guitarists Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay, drummer Bobby Marks and bassist Kenny Chaisson. The band’s first album “Lay Down The Law” appeared via Shrapnel Records until Keel got signed by a major label.“Lay Down The Law” never had a legitimate CD release and has been previously only been issued on cassette and vinyl, until Shrapnel put out this Digipak version few years ago with the album remastered from the original master tapes.Holly cow, this record still sounds awesome today, dated with that huge reverb, but that’s the magic of it.The album kicks off with cheap lightning sound effects followed by a cymbal count in and a badass riff. That’s when I first heard Ron Keel scream. Sure he’d sung on Steeler, but his voice had grown 1000x more effective in the short year in between that album and this one. Such an unholy wail could not come from the lungs of an ordinary, could it? That scream triggers something primal within you and makes you feel like the most powerful man on the world. The song has a nice chorus and some good soloing. The next two tracks continue the intensity. Taking a hint from Judas Priest, Keel strengthens the riffs and ups the wailing on his band’s debut album, and it works tremendously. The delivers the obligatory ballad in “Princess of Illusion” driven by a pleasant melody, but soon the album pick up the peace with the metallic “Born Ready” and the anthemic “Metal Generation”.“‘Til Hell Freezes Over” is a fine midtempo rocker not exactly ballad, and the Roling Stones cover of “Let’s Spend The Night Together” is cool, fun.“You’re The Victim (I’m The Crime)” – originally titled “Tonight Your Mine- kicks all kinds of ass, heavy and gore akin W.A.S.P sonic at the time.Keel’s debut “Lay Down The Law” is a perfect showcase of early ’80s US Metal and how the genre was in terms of sound before develop in years to come.

Album:

I f**king love John Keel. From when I first heard his vocals years ago on the self-titled Steeler (US) debut (featuring a young Malmsteen on guitar) I admired his throaty yet soaring style, and a couple years after, heard about Keel, his eponymous act. Incidentally, this was the first Keel album I heard, before getting my hands on the classics ‘Right to Rock’ and ‘Lay Down the Law’. I had no idea initially that the album was released as late as 1998! This is how true the album remains to the formula and sound of classic heavy metal/hard rock, which is relieving, for die hard fans of the genre, like myself.Anyhow, this is a strong, yet modern album, with Keel writing some excellent numbers in the classic vein, while supplementing this with touches of more modern sounding rock. The most memorable track for me, is ‘United Nations’, a pro-rock anthem, shouting out lyrics about people across the world being proud to rock! (In the tradition of countless, countless bands and songs before; perhaps the most obvious being Twisted Sister’s ‘I Wanna Rock’). Anyway, this song is pure greatness. Continuing the albums utter flaunting of Keel’s excellent high-pitched vocal work, it does so with epic lyrics and an incredibly punchy catching chorus. “We are United Nations – under the flag of rock n roll!!!!” – Excellent. However it doesn’t stop there; everything in this track is where it should be. A perfect arrangement that is deserving of a place on any Keel ‘Best Of’.Party anthem territory is covered in ‘Friday Every Night’, a track discussing the rock n roll lifestyle of playing heavy metal from town to town, and partying the hell out of every day. Inside are excellent lyrics about conquering every town, carrying on an 80’s tradition to perfection. This track is also pretty damn radio friendly, and pondering this, I’m wondering why Keel hasn’t had too much mainstream success. Ferrari and Brian Jay really earn their keep in these two anthems, placing excellent riff after excellent riff, truly executing the style well. The title track is strong also, giving us some Keel screams and continuing the perfect guitar with squealy intros and Dokken-esque verse riffs. Great lyrics in this one about uniting ‘with the boys’ to rock! “Now I’m making up for lost time – coz I’m back where I belong!!!!” I love the way Keel explicitly refers to himself in the lyrics, as most songs are clearly not so direct in this manner. And the fact that he’s so damn positive! Another party anthem!Pretty much every song on this album is a heavy hitting thriller, but one more worthy of directly discussing is ‘Reason to Rock’ a track written by Ron Keel, interestingly, and also sung it. This different style of song (while staying true enough to the classical formula) with the clear difference in vocals is an excellent touch, and its inclusion in the album is a winning touch. Love the choruses, lyrics and back ups in this one.In summation, fans of keel go and get this one! Those who own the classic 80’s albums and love ‘em, but have not yet decided to be bold enough to venture into their 90’s territory should take the plunge! I can’t stress strongly enough what a good album this is, and is well worthy of falling under the Keel banner, and having the title “Back in Action” – believe me - they are. This one is full of punchy, hard hitting party anthems and great guitar work. A must have.
