Bio:

D-A-D is a Danish rock band. It was originally named "Disneyland After Dark", but got renamed to avoid a lawsuit from The Walt Disney Company. In the early 1980s in Copenhagen, Denmark, D-A-D started playing together under their original name Disneyland After Dark. Pedersen came up with the name based on the idea that when the lights are out in Disneyland, anything can happen. The first lineup of D-A-D consisted of Jesper, Stig, Peter and Stig’s girlfriend, Lene Glumer. The band's debut concert was at the youth club Sundby Algaard. In December 1982,[citation needed] Lene Glumer left the band and the three of them kept playing together and on March 3. 1984 Jespers younger brother, Jacob joined the band at a concert at Musikcaféen in Copenhagen. The band released their first album, Call of the Wild in 1986.The group made their international breakthrough in 1989 with the record No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims, which was released on the band's 5th birthday. They achieved some airplay with the single "Sleeping My Day Away".The current lineup is Jesper Binzer, Jacob Binzer, Stig Pedersen and Laust Sonne. The largest concert the band played as the opening act for the Böhse Onkelz on their farewell festival on 17 June 2005, about 120,000 people on the Euro Speedway Lausitz

Album:

Disneyland After Dark formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1982. They were originally basically a cowpunk band, a rock band but heavily influenced by American country music, or rather the soundtracks to Hollywood westerns. After a threatened lawsuit from the Disney conglomerate the band decided to switch to an acronym for a name, D-A-D. I might have suggested a name change but I suppose they were being stubborn. I have to think that the strange name might have hindered their success because they were quite close to breaking in the states at one point, but what teenager wants to buy a record put out by his/her DAD? The band's first two albums, Call of the Wild and Draws a Circle were only released in Denmark and barely resemble heavy metal at all, incorporating much more of an Ennio Morricone influence. They moved closer to hard rock/heavy metal in time for their third album and first international release, 1989's No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims. The album's opening number and almost hit single, "Sleeping My Day Away," got a lot of airplay on MTV and retains the Morricone vibe in the killer guitar tone exhibited on the song's lead breaks. The album was a big hit in Denmark and almost a hit in the U.S. but not quite. Was it the name? Who knows. MTV played the shit out of the band's "Girl Nation" video as well, to no avail. Unfortunately it took the band more than two years to release a follow-up album, entitled Riskin' It All, and it would be their last album released in the U.S. As good as No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims was I would argue that Riskin' It All is possibly even better. The album opens strong with a fast-paced AC/DCish rocker called "Bad Craziness." Awesome song!"You won't believe what I believe when I'm alone." Next up is the band's ominous ode to itself, a very cool song called "D Law," or Disneyland Law.And now we've arrived at my favorite song on the album and perhaps my favorite tune from the band's entire storied career, a groove-driven rocker mildly reminiscent of "Sleeping My Day Away" called "Day of Wrong Moves." I love the vibe and attitude of the song and the chorus is killer.Another upbeat virtual AC/DC tribute called "Rock n' Rock Radar" comes next. This is a really fun tune and continues the album's winning streak. At this point the album stalls a bit with the boring "Down That Dusty 3rd World Road" and another AC/DC rehash called "Makin' Fun of Money" but the record kicks into high gear again with a really cool song called "Grow Or Pay" that would have fit nicely on No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims. I keep bringing up AC/DC but when you get to a song like "Grow Or Pay" you realize that this band is capable of a very individual and unique sound, they can create quite the atmosphere and on a song like this the band has a style all its own.Yet another AC/DC tribute with a great bridge called "Smart Boy Can't Tell Ya" is followed by the aggressive title track, which is the heaviest song on the record. The album closes with a very effective acoustic number called "Laugh n' a 1/2." Not your typical early nineties rock ballad the song reminds me quite a bit of the kind of song Dogs D'Amour were known for, brooding and dark but brimming with emotion and purpose.Verdict: Riskin' It All by D.A.D. is a great early nineties rock record, the kind of album that you can just put on and let it play, the songs fit very well together and the record flows, you will not want to turn it off. What more can you ask for? Give it a try.D-A-D are still together and have released eight more albums since Riskin' It All, but none of those records have been released in the US and they saw the band exploring a variety of genres and styles, unfortunately never coming close, in my opinion, to achieving the greatness achieved by No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims and Riskin' It All.

Everything Glows was the seventh album released by Danish rock band D-A-D. The album was released on 13 April 2000, and was the first album with new drummer Laust Sonne. With the release of this album the band also changed the spelling of the band from D:A:D to the current D-A-D. This is traditional DAD style and there are some great rockers here, with the trademark lyrics. Picks are 1-4 and 'Evil twin' and 'Candy bar'. All great songs, with a sort of modern melodic edge. Cool catchy choruses as well. Really glad I returned to the band's later material.

Album:

Scare Yourself is the ninth album by Danish rock band D-A-D. The album was released on May 23, 2005.D-A-D stands for 'Disneyland After Dark'. D-A-D started playing music in Denmark 20-25 years ago. D-A-D had a major hit with “Sleeping My Day Away (from the “No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims 1989 album on EMI). D-A-D was more of a non-existent band album by album, afterwards. D-A-D released this present album over a year ago in Denmark; now it is also available across Europe.I could have ended the review here. What can you say bought this band? Thousand of fans know the name via the “S.M.D.A. hit, but few would care about D-A-D in our days; Scandinavian countries excluded. There, it's a tradition for D-A-D to achieve continuous recognition with each and every release, especially in Denmark (of course) and Sweden.“Lawrence Of Suburbia opens up the album, topping Denmark's singles charts I think. I try to remember what it was like listening to the “No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims album in my teens. Hard riffing, a solid rhythm section, the ruthless voice of Jesper Benzer…I see it now, too. The blend of AC/DC, (early 80s) Aerosmith, The Cult, L.A. Guns, some Punk Rock elements and here we go. Ah, the Wildhearts also, me stupid…Who's in for the Wildhearts? The production of this album is rusty; it suits fine to some retro playing with fresh mood. However, it did not make me shake. “A Good Day to Give it Up is a goodie and “Camping in Scandinavia can be a DJ fave for some night booze. The band handled the production themselves, with the helping hand of Henryk Lipp (Sator, Millencolin, Union Carbide Productions, 59 Times The Pain) and a bit of help from Michael Ilbert (Roxette, The Cardigans, The Hellacopters, Sator).Booo, can't pen anything more. Just a recollection: 1991's “Riskin' It All album features a helluva lyrical theme for a song. “I Won't Cut My Hair starts like this: “I got hair in my ears - I got hair in my nose - I got hair on my back - And between my toes - When the time comes & my hairwash is due - I'm gonna use one ton of shampoo - But don't give me those sentimental eyes - Coz I'm proud & my hair is nice. You, fuckers…

Album:

This album was the band's most popular release, largely due to the inclusion of the minor hits "Rim of Hell" and "Sleeping My Day Away". Tracks from this album were recorded live for the Osaka After Dark EP, released the following year. "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" is the 3rd full-length studio album by Danish hard rock act Disneyland After Dark (now D-A-D). The album was released through Medley Records (and through Warner Brothers in the US) in March 1989. "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" was a big breakthrough for the band and sold really well. In their native Denmark alone the album has sold around 275,000 copies. A pretty good sales statistic in a country with a population of only 5 million people. But the album did well in both Asia and Europe too. The big American breakthrough never really came though. The album´s success was helped along by the very popular single track "Sleeping My Day Away", which also opens the album, but there are several other D-A-D "classics" on "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" like "Jihad", "Rim of Hell" and "Girl Nation". All delivered with the trademark "gleam in the eye" humourous D-A-D hard rock style. Around this period of the band´s career, they were often lumbed in with the glam metal pack, but besides the sparse use of make up (which was something every other band did in the eighties), there´s little here that sounds like glam metal to me. This is through and through sweaty and melodic hard rock delivered with conviction (their cowpunk past is heard a couple of times during the playing time but that part of their sound is not dominant on this album). The tracks are vers/chorus stuctured and hook laden. The kind of tracks you can sing/scream along too and remember when the album is over. When that is said, not all tracks stand out equally much, but overall "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" is a pretty consistent high quality release.Jesper Binzer´s raw vocal delivery and little brother Jacob Binzer´s lead guitar work are among the highlights regarding the musicianship on the album. The drumming is almost too simple for it´s own good, but that´s probably an aquired taste.Featuring a strong (but at times almost too polished) sound production "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" come off as a really great hard rock album on almost every parameter. If all tracks had been of the quality of the best tracks on the album this would have been a hard rock masterpiece, but as there are a couple of more standard quality tracks featured on the album too,
