Bio:

Love/Hate is a Los Angeles, California based hard rock band, who achieved their greatest fame in the early 1990s.Love/Hate was formed in 1985, when Jizzy Pearl (real name Jim Wilkinson) joined Jon E. Love, Skid Rose, and Joey Gold, in an 1980s influenced electronica band called Dataclan, after their previous lead singer walked out while playing in Japan. They lived together in an LA warehouse called SoulHouse, and in the first year put out a 4 track EP and played a short and not very well received tour of Mexico. At this time the band had a very 'glam' look, wearing make up.In 1986 the band renamed themselves as Love/Hate from a song they played at the time called Love and Hate. They also changed their look and style to a more gothic image, having been influenced by the release of the album Love by The Cult. For the next couple of years they tried various styles of music and were pitched to many record companies in an attempt to get signed.1987, the band settled on the rock genre, and had some limited success, when one of their songs was used on the soundtrack for Critters 2 and an early version of "She's an Angel" featured in the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.Around this time they briefly employed bass player Tracy G, who would later play in Dio. After seeing a video of a drunken performance, lead singer Jizzy resolved to turn himself and the band around. In early 1988, Skid wrote a new collection of songs, which would later form the bulk of the album Blackout in the Red Room. They began performing regularly at the free Monday night 'No Bozo Jam' at Sunset Strip's Whisky a Go Go. This freed them from self-promotion of one off gigs and they began to collaborate as a band to improve their repertoire of songs. However, the band felt much frustration as at that time many Sunset Strip were being signed by record companies, with Glam Metal at its height, but Love/Hate were repeatedly overlooked. The band then put together a 4 track demo, and in December 1988 finally got a record deal with Columbia.Their debut album Blackout in the Red Room was recorded in 1989 and released in March 1990. It reached No. 154 on the billboard 200.After a small club tour they supported Dio on an arena tour, their biggest to date.At this time the video for the single "Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?" was receiving good rotation on MTV, chiefly on Headbanger's Ball, and they went on tour with AC/DC to a much better reception. On this tour they first played in the UK.In 1991, they finished touring and started to write material for the second album. The initial set of songs submitted to the label for the next album were all rejected and the band had to start again from scratch. They relocated to New York, again living together as they had done in their formative years. At this point they began to have creative differences with the label. The band was trying to move toward a 'crossover' sound with more radio appeal, but the label thought they were losing their edge (Jizzy would later acknowledge they were correct). The band wanted to release "Miss America" as a single, but the label vetoed this and instead decided to put out "Happy Hour".However, 6 months before the album was released, Love/Hate secured a support slot for Skid Row's 'No Fucking Frills' European Tour. The label wanted to release an EP in support of the tour and in direct opposition to the band's wishes chose "Evil Twin", a song the band had rejected for the second album. While touring Skid made numerous attacks on the Label in interviews, with Jizzy attempting to divert attention or prevent the comments being published. After playing at the London Arena, Jizzy got into a drunken fight with Skid Row singer, Sebastian Bach, which briefly led to the band being ejected from the tour. But they made up their differences before the next show. The second album Wasted in America was released later in the year 1992 and the band embarked on another European tour, this time in support of Ozzy Osbourne. On returning to America, they were told that Columbia intended to drop the band as the single for "Happy Hour" had not sold well and the follow-up single "Wasted in America" wasn't getting much airplay on the radio.Love/Hate are known for their high energy performances. At their gigs in the early 90s, the band's bass player Skid would often kick off the gig with a wild dance using a cross made out of Budweiser cans. They played the sort of venues where stage diving and crowd surfing made for a very frenetic atmosphere.Soon after being dropped, Skid sold his car to finance a third album. Let's Rumble (1993) was recorded in a few days and the band went on a 9 week US club tour. BMG picked up the album and released it in the UK, which was followed by a 3 week UK tour. However, the label didn't want to release the album in the US. The band sent the album to a number of labels, but with the rise of Grunge their style of rock was out of fashion and there was no interest.Eventually they signed with a minor label to release Let's Rumble, but it was to be delayed until January 1994. In an unfortunate turn, their manager gave a copy of the album to the KNAC radio station in LA, where the lead single "Spinning Wheel" started to get heavy airplay. But the band were unable to release it either as a single or an album and despite playing to packed audiences in LA they were unable to capitalize on this popularity. Eventually another minor label, Calibre, arranged to release the album, but coming out in 1994 it was too late and the radio popularity had passed. In 1995 the band started writing and recording material for a fourth album, I'm Not Happy, using their own studio and recording on ADAT with Joey producing. During this Jon E. Love re-joined the band, when Darren left by mutual agreement. Two side projects were also formed and started playing gigs. 'Skoe', with Skid and Joey and 'Sineaters' with Jizzy and Joey. At a Sineaters gig Jizzy was approached by Mayhem Records, who wanted to release I'm Not Happy. In December 1995 they played a two-week tour in Germany. In 1997 both side projects collapsed and Skid decided to put together a new album. Not having the time to write new material he instead put together tracks from excerpts of old B sides and other unreleased material, along with some songs from the now defunct 'Skoe'. Nearly all of the recording was done by Skid himself, with the rest of the band having very limited input. Jizzy reluctantly provided vocals. During recording the band travelled to the UK for a two-week tour.On return to the US, Jizzy started a new side project with new musicians as did Joey. Upset and frustrated, the band sold all the bands equipment and Love/Hate split up. Skid employed Marq Torien from Bulletboys to complete recording for the album Livin' Off Layla (1997), which was never released on a label. In 1998 Jizzy was approached at a Warrant gig by their manager, who wanted to put Love/Hate on a tour with Dio. Skid declined to join in, but both Joey and Jon agreed. Cordell Crockett from Ugly Kid Joe (who used to be a roadie prior to joining Ugly Kid Joe) joined to play bass in Skids absence. The tour was difficult and afterward Jizzy left the band again to sing with L.A. Guns.In 1999, Jizzy put together an album of old Sineaters tracks, that he had written and it was released as Love/Hate on the Perris label, titled Let's Eat. Later that year he left L.A. Guns as they were reforming with their classic line up. There was some talk of the band reforming yet again with former L.A. Guns members Chris Van Dahl (on bass) and Johnny Crypt (on guitar), but in 2000 Jizzy was hired as lead singer for Ratt, which would end that prospect and occupy him for the next six years. In late 2013, the Crucified EP was released digitally under the Love/Hate name. Following threatened lawsuits and disputes from other former Love/Hate members, Jizzy Pearl announced he would be discontinuing the name. The EP was subsequently changed to display Pearl's name instead. Pearl announced he will be touring U.K. under the name Love/Hate with a new band in November 2015.

Album:

Certainly an album that was claiming a proper remastering was "Blackout In The Red Room", the classic debut from American hard rockers LOVE / HATE, 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records with 3 bonus tracks. On the surface, the music of Love / Hate's debut may seem no different than most any late-'80s L.A. pop metal, but the band's performance exudes a fury and belligerence that put them on the other sidewalk than Poison or Warrant, to name a couple.Although their appeal was primarily to a mainstream crowd, they nurtured a style that would outsmart their competition by wide margin.Fronted by wild man of rock Jizzy Pearl, whose twisted vocal is as powerful as it is different, the band courted a similar audience to the cavortings of similar ground breaking street urchins such as Skid Row, The Wildhearts, and Faith No More. While Love / Hate arrived at the tail end (1990) of the US Hard Rock scene golden years, the impact of this record is undeniable. From the opening crunching riff of title track 'Blackout In The Red Room' it’s obvious what these guys were all about: big, ballsy, kick-ass hard rock turned to 11.Jizzy Pearl’s voice was like nothing we had ever heard before, all rasp and screech, bleeding the world-weary and fucked up rockstar vibe into everything he sang, and guitarist Jon E. Love was simply a machine spitting out riff upon riff upon riff. The rhythm section of Skid Rose on bass and Joey Gold on drums pounded the shit out of their instruments and at times you couldn’t tell who hit harder.'Rock Queen' is next and for 2:21 it is all over the place, asses and elbows flying about. This brings us into the cascading rhythms of 'Tumbleweed' that rest on top of one another like the levels of a champagne fountain.'Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?' featuring Skid wrecking shop on the bass in jaw-dropping fashion is undeniably the most well known track from Love / Hate (and one of the best on the album) which received good rotation on MTV Headbanger's Ball and helped them win over the notoriously fickle AC/DC crowds on tour. The slow, deliberate, whiskey-soaked pacing of 'Fuel to Run' showcases yet another side of this band’s musical abilities. Each member was truly skilled at what he did, and when they came together it was nothing short of magic.Another favorite is of course 'One More Round', featuring damn-near virtuoso performances, most notably from Gold whose off-beats merged with tribal rhythms cradle and hold the song in place. The final part is a whirlwind of activity, over which Jizzy lets fly with some wails and moans that accent everything Gold is playing perfectly.'She’s An Angel' is one of those rare tunes that sounds just as good acoustic as it does plugged-in, where the band adds a nice cello arrangement. For 'Mary Jane' (guess what this one’s about...) Jon E. Love comes up with a hypnotic guitar line not unlike the tendrils of smoke that rise from the tops of incense candles. And for 'Straitjacket' the band employs more of a pissed-off sound which probably scared some people back then due to how saccharine a lot of the songs were at the time.If you take the kind of dirty, meaty, gritty tone that bands like LA Guns and Motley Crue were too scared to try in 1990, for then you get 'Slutsy Tipsy', the bastard demon child born of the DNA from the Sunset Strip. And 'Slave Girl' was its wicked stepsister, no question. That deliciously evil vocal harmony over a sexy guitar line is pure dirty gold, and even has a hint of The Cult in it.Closer 'Hell, Ca., Pop.4' is the perfect summation of the music and attitude of Love / Hate. These guys simply did not give a fuck and that very likely worked against them despite landing high-profile tours in ’90 and ’91. Too edgy for what had become a sugary sweet and safe musical landscape, they were over before they really began. This Rock Cancy reissue includes the B-side 'Tinseltown' plus two live tracks, both an excellent addition as showcases how hot & kick-ass Love / Hate sounded alive."Blackout In The Red Room" is a different beast from the LA Hard Rock scene, and when I say that I am also referring to their bestial sound. Kickin' & dirty but with an extremely clean production by veteran studio wizard Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister) now enhanced - especially the bass - by this Rock Candy remastering. This album retains a contemporary edge, giving Love / Hate longevity that still sounds fresh to this day. If you never heard them, better check them out soon.

Album:

Rock Candy Records has just 'Remastered & Reloaded' LOVE/HATE second album "Wasted In America", one of the most interesting and welcomed reissues they have done in recent time.Wasted In America" is a unique album - and criminally underrated - from the LA scene, one you need it in your collection.Based in Hollywood LOVE/HATE had won a coveted long-term deal with Columbia Records and issued a well-received debut album. It was a record that positioned them as a harder, more street-cred option to the majority of other bands playing around the Hollywood scene – somewhere between Guns N’ Roses and Skid Row but with a twist. And with Jizzy Pearl they had one of the best frontmen in town, one with the look and attitude to carry them far.For their 2nd album "Wasted In America" they get new producer, John Jansen, who had worked with a stellar list of hard rock acts including Britny Fox, Bang Tango, Warrant and Faster Pussycat. It looked like a marriage made in heaven and to a degree it was."Wasted In America" is an electric and exciting record, produced with bluster and bravado, lending the band a monstrously dirty edge, helping to elevate their songs to another level. The guitars cut through like chainsaws and Jizzy never sounded more in command.Looking back, it seems like if they hadn't been so closely associated with the Sunset Strip scene, LOVE/HATE might have been one of those eccentric metal bands that end up being embraced as much, if not more, by non-metal fans.LOVE/HATE doesn't really sound like any of the big names of the day, by not doing the predictable, expected thing for a glam / hair metal band at the time, although they would seem to have many of the same ingredients."Wasted In America" is wildly inventive, and unique in sound. This album is sleazy hard rock, but twisted, with original arrangements.Songs such as the melodic ‘Miss America’, ‘Evil Twin’, ‘Happy Hour’ and the title track itself are among the highlights, but all are strong numbers like the acoustic-strummed plea for mutual tolerance 'Don't F@ck With Me' or the sleazoid delights of 'Spit', 'Cream', 'Tranquilizer' and 'Time's Up'.This highly caffeinated L.A. four-piece came around too late to be anywhere near as big as they should have been, and "Wasted In America" is their finest, top creative moment.Clever songwriting, outstanding musicianship and first class production, there are no fillers in "Wasted In America" and I really can't think some other band sounding similar to these guys back in the day.And now, after all these years, the album still sounds fresh and captivating.I have the Bad Reputation Records remaster of LOVE/HATE "Wasted In America" appeared several years ago, a good one done in the 'old-school' fashion. This Rock Candy 2018 remaster is much more punchy, groovy in its output."Wasted In America" put their mark on the early '90s US hard rock scene, one of the most original releases from the genre and the era, and one that you need in your collection.
