Bio:

Hardline was formed when brothers Johnny (vocals) and Joey (guitar) Gioeli, originally from the band Brunette, teamed up with Journey/Bad English guitarist Neal Schon. The original plan was for Neal to produce Hardline, but as he was having so much fun that he decided to join the band as soon as he left Bad English for the tensions arosen with John Waite. They immediately added established musicians Todd Jensen (David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper) on bass and Deen Castronovo (also coming from Bad English) on drums to the mix and the result was magnificent. They went on to record their debut album “Double Eclipse” for MCA in 1992 and then went on the tour circuit with such heavy hitters as Van Halen and Mr. Big. The first single from “Double Eclipse” was the song “Hot Cherie”.While never popular in the mainstream, various radio stations worldwide started to play it and Hardline’s fanbase started to grow. They released a video to MTV, but did not get much airplay. By that time grunge and alternative had already taken over and melodic rock was being pushed aside. Tension among band members, the record company and perhaps certain egos, got in the way of an immediate follow-up album, despite the band having written more than enough material. While Neal re-started his adventure with Journey in 1995 (again together with Deen Castronovo), Johnny stepped out of the music business eventually to return as Axel Rudi Pell’s singer in 1998 on the album “Oceans Of Time”. But years later Johnny and his brother Joey were ready to give it another go with Hardline after the call of Frontiers Records, with an all new line-up featuring famed drummer Bob Rock (Nelson, Vinnie Vincent’s Invasion), lead guitarist Josh Ramos (The Storm, Two Fires), bassist Chris Maloney and keyboard player Michael T. Ross (Accomplice) and all new material. Of course the awesome result is Hardline “II” which was produced by veteran studio man Bob Burch. The album shows a new maturity and edge for Hardline combining powerful and immediately recognizable hooks coming from the classic hard rock tradition of Whitesnake, Van Halen and – of course – Hardline with all new elements and sounds. This album marks the long awaited return of an hard rock master and creates a landmark for the years to come for the development of this music style ! The album also includes the song “This Gift” written and performed with Neal Schon as special guest on guitar.Hailed by critics and fans alike as a top return, the band returned on stage headlining the GODS Festival in Bradford in June 2002, before Johnny and Josh started to work on new songs which eventually saw the light of day on the “Leaving the End Open” album released on Frontiers in may 2009.Following the release of “Leaving The End Open”, HARDLINE’s mastermind and singer Johnny Gioeli did not realistically feel that another HARDLINE album would have seen the light of day sometime soon. It was again thanks to the insistence of Frontiers Records President Serafino Perugino that the concept came about once again “I love surprises and this was certainly one of them”, says Gioeli. “Each time I decide to close the door on Hardline, I get the itch to continue”.Fate wanted that when Perugino sent Gioeli some song demos written by Alessandro Del Vecchio (an Italian musician and producer know for his work with Edge of Forever and Eden’s Curse but also with Axe, Mitch Malloy, Bobby Kimball and several other top musicians and bands), the singer became excited once again and wanted to give it another go.

Album:

Japanese SHM-CD remastered super group HARDLINE and their debut CD "Double Eclipse".With Journey on hiatus and after two albums with Bad English, at the beginning of the '90s mastermind Neal Schon joined a new project with talented drummer Deen Castronovo founded by the then relatively unknown vocalist Johnny Gioeli (ex Brunette). The result was "Double Eclipse", one of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock albums of all time."Double Eclipse" was recorded from September 1991 to February 1992, then mixing and mastering finished in April of 1992.All songs included on the record are simply amazing, and the album as whole, from songwriting and performances to production has proved over time to be a melodic hard rock masterpiece.Let's start with this: Johnny Gioeli, alone, is worth buying the album. Gioeli's voice echoes through with insane bursts of maturity and a low pitch that tweaks on through the audio tracks, and is absolutely breathtaking. He sounds great in every track: and keeps up this superb vocal range throughout the entire LP.The guitar playing is excellent, Schon keeps the melodies and tempos gliding along through the songs. Johnny's bro Joey Gioeli is mindlessly good on a rhythm guitar and keeps the echoing audio moving. The style of songs on "Double Eclipse" is quite varied and starts off with an arena rock one such as 'Life’s a Bitch' with its gang shouted verses and the fist pumping chorus. The pure melodic and emotional side comes from songs like the excellent 'Everything' and the hit 'Hot Cherie' (a revamped version of Streetheart‘s song) a catchy as Hell tune.'Everything' is a smooth number, with a great guitar tone. The intro lick is subtle yet forceful at the same time, packed with feeling. Speaking of feeling, Johnny’s voice is tremendous here, it has such emotion to it that the song is almost overwhelming. The chorus is also pure melodic hard rock bliss and the “singability” factor is high, one of the catchiest songs in the genre, ever. There's a thunderous rocker in 'Dr. Love', a terrific instrumental from the extraordinary Neal Schon in '31-91', while we find a surprisingly eerie lyrical flow over a great drum beat in 'Takin' Me Down', creating an almost gritty atmosphere for it over the guitar lines.'In The Hands of Time' is just another highlight, starting with a heartwarming acoustic intro, following with a calming drum beat and a serenading, freely calm pitch from Gioeli's amazing voice, then kicks off with an explosive solo from Schon. Absolutely breathtaking. The emotional delivery of ‘Can’t Find My Way’ will most definitely worm its way into your brain and have you singing along, thumping along on the steering wheel and keeping this disc on repeat over and over again. From start to finish, "Double Eclipse" is stellar. Amazing musicians, outstanding songwriting and some awesome vocals make the record a perfect Melodic Hard Rock album. If you haven't heard this record yet then you came from Saturn, and if you got a copy it's time to revisit and replace it with this superb SHM-CD version. The already outstanding production with that unique 1990-90 period glossy treatment is augmented here with top notch definition. It's out of print but tracking down an expensive used copy worth every cent.

Album:

Today we have here in exclusive the fresh Bad Reputation Records remastered version of HARDLINE classic “Double Eclipse” including 4 bonus tracks. Here already featured some time ago the stupendous Japanese release of this essential album on SHM-CD, but this new reissue includes the juicy bonuses that worth the purchase. In terms of sound quality, this fresh remaster is a bit deeper in the bass output, fuller and well balanced. With Journey on hiatus and after two albums with Bad English, at the beginning of the ’90s guitar master Neal Schon and drummer extraordinaire Deen Castronovo joined a new project founded by the then relatively unknown vocalist Johnny Gioeli (ex Brunette).Schon & Gioeli re-arranged many song ideas Johnny and his bro Joey Gioeli started in ’80s, with the help of talented Jonathan Cain on some of them, with the likes of Eddie Money also involved. The result was “Double Eclipse”, one of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock albums of all time.“Double Eclipse” was recorded from September 1991 to February 1992, then mixing and mastering finished in April of 1992.All songs included on the record are simply amazing, and the album as whole, from songwriting and performances to production has proved over time to be a melodic hard rock masterpiece.Let’s start with this: Johnny Gioeli’s performance alone is worth buying the album. The chorus is also pure melodic hard rock bliss and the “singability” factor is high, one of the catchiest songs in the genre, ever. There’s a thunderous rocker in ‘Dr. Love’ (written by maestros Mark Baker & Mike Slamer), a terrific instrumental from the extraordinary Neal Schon in ’31-91′, while we find a surprisingly eerie lyrical flow over a great drum beat in ‘Takin’ Me Down’, creating an almost gritty atmosphere for it over the guitar lines.‘In The Hands of Time’ is just another highlight, starting with a heartwarming acoustic intro, following with a calming drum beat and a serenading, freely calm pitch from Gioeli’s amazing voice, then kicks off with an explosive solo from Schon. Absolutely breathtaking. The emotional delivery of ‘Can’t Find My Way’ will most definitely worm its way into your brain and have you singing along, thumping along on the steering wheel and keeping this disc on repeat over and over again. This Bad Reputation remastered reissue include as bonus the killer original Japanese bonus track ‘Love Leads The Way’, a mid-paced AOR ballad full of magic and also a highlight, plus perfectly recorded live versions of ‘Life’s A Bitch (Live)’, ‘In The Hands of Time (Live)’ and ‘Dr. Love (Live)’, all captured at Marin Civic Centre, San Raphael, California on August 23rd 1992 in front of a hot audience. From start to finish, “Double Eclipse” is stellar. Amazing musicians, outstanding songwriting and some awesome vocals makes this record a perfect Melodic Hard Rock album. If you haven’t heard this album yet then you came from Saturn, and if you got a copy it’s time to revisit and replace it with this superb remaster. The already outstanding production with that unique 1990-91 period glossy treatment is augmented here with top notch definition.

Album:

Album "II" is the second album by American hard rock band, Hardline. It was released in 2002, ten years after the band's debut album Double Eclipse. It is also the last album to feature Joey Gioeli. The album was originally going to be named Hyperspace, but vocalist Johnny Gioeli decided to change the name simply to II because "it's a natural prosecution of what we started with our debut album Double Eclipse."[citation needed] The tracks "Face the Night," "Do or Die," "Your Eyes," and "This Gift" were originally recorded for Double Eclipse, as Johnny Gioeli revealed in a 2002 interview, "So people are getting a real Hardline record."It features former The Storm guitarist Josh Ramos. In a 2002 interview with Andy Read, Johnny Gioeli revealed four songs that were to be included on II: "Plastic Jesus," "Sweet Surrender," "Why Me," which may have been an early demo of "Y," and "Only a Night," the only track among the four confirmed to have appeared on the final product. Gioeli also revealed that he had written two full-length albums, one of which was unused and replaced with what became II. "We actually started writing an album that would've truly been a follow-up to the first Hardline record," Gioeli explained, "It would have been a bit shocking because it was a little outside the box. People don't know that because the second album never came out. Anyway, people at Frontiers heard it and got a little bit nervous and said, 'Keep it like the first record.'"In an interview with members of Jun Senoue's official fansite at Summer of Sonic 2012, Gioeli elaborated on the differences between Double Eclipse and what would have been an immediate follow up: "So the question is, how different was it going to be? Well, what happened was, we had a meeting with the record company (MCA Records) when we were preparing for that, and then, you know the whole Pearl Jam alternative shit was happening, and the record company said 'Hey look, we know that you guys are talented enough that you can fit in this space as well. So we want to have a bit of an alternative flare.' So, was it completely different? No, but it definitely had a little alternative feel to it. Yeah, it definitely did. I’m trying to recall... basically the difference was, what was happening is a lot of the singers were not using much vibrato." He then demonstrated the difference. "So what we were doing was..." He proceeded to sing part of “I Will Survive” (unreleased) without vibrato. "There it is, that was one of the songs."

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the return of HARDLINE with the brand new album “Human Nature”, set for release on October 14.Following the rebirth of the band that happened with the release of “Danger Zone” in 2012, Hardline have regrouped around fabulous singer Johnny Gioeli with the excellent production and keyboard skills of Alessandro Del Vecchio (Rated X, Resurrection Kings, Revolution Saints), the shredding talents of guitarist Josh Ramos (The Storm), and the powerful rhythm section made up of bassist Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen) and drummer Francesco Jovino (Primal Fear, Jorn). All these musicians have an impressive pedigree, but what makes Hardline special is how well their unique and different talents blend together. The goal for their new album was to have a heavier and updated version of the original Hardline sound. Think debut album, 1992's “Double Eclipse” updated for the 21st Century, with a grittier and more straight ahead sound. Anthemic, hard rocking songs are what you can expect from this record and hook after hook, riff after riff, you’ll find yourself wowed by this absolute monster of an album! When Gioeli and Del Vechhio got together to begin writing songs for the album, “[T]he plan was to create an album that emulates the feeling of "Double Eclipse" combined with the dynamics of modern day rock. Very heavy and in your face, but still with hitting melodies,” says Johnny. “I have a tremendous amount of Axel Rudi Pell fans that know me for the way I deliver a metal song too. So yes, it’s definitely the heaviest we have done since the debut. I see this album as the perfect mix of styles.”“As a producer I pushed everyone to squeeze these songs and put as much attitude as we could on tape,” adds Alessandro Del Vecchio. “We wanted more of an in-your-face attitude than our softer albums. I think we understood we had something special in our hands when we finished “Take You Home”. Even if it's the ballad of the album I guess it's the focal point of the musical bond that Johnny and myself share with the whole band.”“The guys put their heart and soul into their performances,” concludes Johnny “You can hear the essence of every drum strike and the sweat hitting the drums shortly after. Do it again, Cesco! HARDER, HARDER! Josh, Anna and Ale wouldn’t stop until their fingers said “enough”…and then……we did it again and again. That’s rock and roll man. Songs like “Where Will We Go From Here,” “Human Nature” and “Take you Home,” to me they are the essence of what I LOVE to sing and HOW I love to sing!”

Album:

While we haven't heard from HARDLINE since 2016, one member of the band has had a busy lately. Founder and vocalist Johnny Gioeli dropped two albums last year, Set The World On Fire with former bandmate Deen Castronovo, and his own solo album, One Voice. Now Hardline returns with their sixth and latest album, "Life", featuring two new members, guitarist Mario Percudani and drummer Marco Di Slavia. In one sense, 'Life' is merely a continuation of the hard edged sound of previous 2016's Human Nature. Alternatively, I would say this album is even heavier than its predecessor, enough so to call the Hardline sound, melodic hard rock. The riffs are sharper, the leads more blistering, the rhythm section more bold and thundering, and Gioeli, perhaps, even a bit more raging in his vocal presence.Sure, there are some milder moments to a song, like the softer electric breakdown within 'Hold On Tight'. Mostly, there's kick ass edgy rockers like 'Place To Call Home', 'Take A Chance', or 'Chameleon'.Even the ballads can be rocking tough like the heavier version of Queen's 'Who Wants To Live Forever' and 'Page Of Your Life', despite their lingering piano lines.Conversely, Hardline can bring the mellow, so to speak, in the AOR ballads 'This Love' and especially 'My Friend', which turns upon acoustic guitar and vocal harmony."Life" is a very strong, kicking new album from Hardline, one of their best after their unbeatable debut.A variety of songs from hard hitting rockers to some beautiful ballads and back to action again, plus the skills of each member guarantees that "Life" will please both old and new fans.

Album:

The live set performed by HARDLNE at the 2019 edition of the annual Frontiers Rock Festival was, hyperbole aside, one of a kind. The band not only played a superb show, but it also saw none other than original drummer Deen Castronovo jump behind the kit to play on selected tracks from the band’s 1992 debut album ‘Double Eclipse’. This landmark set was captured on audio and video and is being released soon on CD+DVD as ‘Life Live’.Hardline have been touring in mainland Europe regularly in recent years and are a well oiled live machine, but the show they put on at the Live Club in Trezzo Sull’Adda (near Milan) in late April 2019 has been hailed as one of their best in recent memory. With a solid rhythm section featuring powerhouse drummer Marco Di Salvia and Anna Portalupi, the multi-talented Alessandro Del Vecchio on keyboards and background vocals, stellar new guitarist Mario Percudani, and the inimitable Johnny Gioeli on vocals, Hardline rocked out hits from their debut album and also played a selection of songs from their three most recent releases. This band rocks, and ‘Life Live’ it’s a clear proof.

Album:

Hardline has announced the release of a new studio album, "Heart, Mind And Soul", on July 9, 2021 via Frontiers Music Srl."This album is a true reflection of who we are and what we care about. I’m always amazed, despite what some critics may say, that we have the strength and power to push through the way we believe and want to. That will never change with this band. It’s a very, very special band chemistry we have here", says vocalist Johnny Gioeli.Of the first single from the album, Gioeli says: "Fuel To The Fire was inspired by that one person who just knows how to push your buttons. You know who you are ... the last word ... always right. We have all had that person in our life at some point. This song takes a lyric twist as I add MY fuel to the fire. Enjoy ... and use it as therapy the next time someone gets under your skin who doesn't deserve to be there."Ever since the release of the widely heralded “Danger Zone” album in 2012, Hardline has been offering a straight-ahead, gritty, riff-based melodic hard rock sound which is a continuing evolution from what was on offer in the band's early days. What you get here on the new studio album is a group of musicians who have perfectly gelled as a unit and is determined to display a sound that is immediate and powerful. Adding an own personality and imprint to the music, the band has created a perfect balance between these anthemic, hard rocking songs. You can expect hook after hook and riff after riff as you take a ride with Hardline via "Heart, Mind And Soul".Singer Johnny Gioeli, as usual, is in supreme form, providing a soaring vocal performance to stir up the listener. Complementing that, Mario Percudani’s guitar is on fire and the super tight rhythm section of Anna Portalupi and Marco Di Salvia is locked in. Alessandro Del Vecchio's immeasurable contribution on keyboards, background vocals and production serves to tie the whole package together. He is, rightfully and deservedly, one of the 'go to' guys in the melodic hard rock scene and this record shows, once again, why."Heart, Mind And Soul is an album you can’t turn off, in my biased opinion. After writing, recording, mixing, mastering, planning, deciding ... you would think we got sick of it. Not even close. This is one of my most favourite Hardline albums to date without question", says Gioeli.Hardline evolved from being an up-and-coming Sunset Strip sensation featuring the brothers Johnny (vocals) and Joey (guitar) Gioeli to a supergroup of sorts, featuring former Bad English members Neal Schon and Deen Castronovo, before finally settling in and becoming a band showcasing the incredible talents of fabulous singer Johnny Gioeli with the production and songwriting skills of Alessandro Del Vecchio (Revolution Saints, Jorn, etc.), the shredding talents of guitarist Mario Percudani and the powerful rhythm section made up of bassist Anna Portalupi and drummer Marco Di Salvia. What truly makes Hardline special is how well their unique and different talents blend together to form a spectacular whole."Heart, Mind And Soul” is simply an album you can’t miss if you love melodic hard rock, but what else would you expect from a new Hardline album? They are, after all, masters of the genre. The band plans to hit the road once touring resumes post-pandemic, so take the time to learn all of these future classics to sing along with Johnny soon enough!

Anna Portalupi – bass
