Bio:

Fronted by lead vocalist Chris Ousey, between 1991 and 2011 British AOR / Melodic Rockers HEARTLAND released a total of eleven albums, but for the fans as well as for the critics, the best of the bunch is still their self-titled debut, originally released by A&M Records in 1991. HEARTLAND is a AOR band formed by former VIRGINIA WOLF vocalist Chris Ousey.HEARTLAND's debut was released in March of 1991 on A&M however by this time the popularity of the AOR / Melodic Rock scene was on the wane. A second album was released in 1995 through German label Long Island, which was ostensibly a collection of demo recordings.Escape Music, signed HEARTLAND up for a third album, 'III', issued in 1996. This album saw former EXPORT and IAN GILLAN guitarist Steve Morris joining Chris Ousey as the core of the band, with a fourth album, 'Bridge Of Fools', quickly emerging soon after the third.Following Steve Morris working with 'Dream Catcher' with IAN GILLAN & Chis Ousey working on side project THE DISTANCE with guitarist/song writer/producer Kenny "Kaos" Loney, the band release 1998 album 'Miracles By Design'.In 1999, the band released the album 'When Angels Call' as a thank you to their many fans old and new alike. The album was a collection of HEARTLAND classic's, new material and tracks from pre-HEARTLAND Project VIRGINIA WOLF, all delivered in an intimate acoustic style. In addition the 'Wide Open' album was re-issued during this year, as the original CD was no longer availble due to the demise of German label Long Island. The 2001 release 'As It Comes' saw a HEARTLAND line up of Ousey, Morris, bass player Tim Hewitts, keyboard player Steve Millington and drummer Steve Gibson.HEARTLAND completed the next album in late 2004 for an early 2005 release 'Move On' through Escape Music. Contributing guests included bassist Mathias Gregersen, the GRAND ILLUSION pairing of Peter Sundell and Per Svensson on backing vocals with the MERCYFUL FATE and FORCE OF EVIL credited Bjarne T. Holm on drums.HEARTLAND announced a fresh album for Escape Music in September 2007 entitled 'Mind Your Head' which is the bands tenth album.

Album:

HEARTLAND are basically relatively unknown in this country and that, although here with "Communication Down" the now eighth album of the Canadians is available. However, the two bandleaders and songwriters may be less unknown.Vocalist Chris Ousey earned his apprenticeship in the hard rock formation MONROE and later in Jason Bonham's troupe VIRGINIA WOLF, which won at least platinum with more than 250,000 albums sold in Canada and North America.Sixth of Steve Morris should / should be a term, since the man has at least recorded three albums with the IAN GILLAN BAND (this is the cross reference to the divine album "Dream Catcher" allowed).Exactly these years of experience brought both in HEARTLAND with a came out and washed with all the waters classic hard rock troupe. The eleven songs are catchy and memorable. Above all, the rocky "Imagine My Surprise", the harmonious "Follow Me" and the instrumental "Classical Blast" Of course, even such a disc should not miss the typical ballads. Are mentioned for a total of three slow pieces "The Bottom Line" Of course, Chris Ousey and Steve Morris did not record all the instruments on their own, but got as studio musician drummer Frank Baker and bassist Tim Hewitt (among others BOULEVARD) the keyboards shared Steve Morris and guest musician Dave Chapman,With "Communication Down" the demands of every hard-rock fan should be covered, which basically means nothing more than: listening, buying and being satisfied.

Line-Up:

Album:

I have to admit that I’ve had a bit of a soft spot in my heart for HEARTLAND (no pun intended!) ever since they released their 1998 “Miracles By Design” album. “Miracles” was the complete album to me. It had great songs that flowed perfectly, top-notch playing, and solid production.Of course, “Miracles By Design” isn’t where life started for HEARTLAND. They released their debut album way back in 1991 on A & M Records. That self-titled debut was Heartland’s only major label release and even though they have continued to regularly release records, they have since decided to take the Indie label route. First they went with the German Long Island Records label for the 1995 release of “Wide Open” and then with the UK-based Escape Music for all subsequent albums. In total HEARTLAND has released nine albums to date and I’m happy to say “Move On” may be their best since the release of “Miracles” and one of their best overall. The new album opens with the track “Hard Hearted Man” and the song has a harder edge than I’ve heard from the group in a while. Singer Chris Ousey, who bears a striking resemblance in the vocal department to Eric Martin of MR. BIG fame, turns in some impressive work on the song but guitarist Steve Morris steals the show on this song with some ripping axe work. Also, the production is crisp and slightly different feeling from the bands previous work. In the past I would have classified the band as pure AOR but this album starts out more of a melodic hard rock affair, and that is fine with me when it’s done this well!As if the opening track wasn’t rocking enough “City of Lights” cranks it up a notch further. The song has some great, huge backing vocals and again some awesome guitar work from Morris.“Take Me Alive” has sort of a hard funk feel to it not that far from something you might hear from say, the STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE. The style is not usually my favorite and something I wouldn’t expect from HEARTLAND but nontheless they do it well and make it work. The next trio of songs harkens back to the vintage HEARTLAND sound. “How Was I To Know” is a true AOR power ballad and it features acoustic guitar mixed with Morris’ melodic electric solo. “Hell or High Water” has a laid back vibe mixed with a little Hammond B3 sound. “Too Sad to Cry” with its melodic AOR style reminds me of something from the “Miracles” album. The quality of the production really shines on these types of tracks also.“Getting Ready” has a latter-day DEF LEPPARD feel right from the start. In fact, if you heard the opening few seconds you’d know exactly what I mean. Meanwhile “Remember Me?” is a high energy track with an absolutely killer guitar solo. I must say Steve Morris has a great tone to his guitar sound. The instrumental “Redemption” is very nice with a mellow acoustic beginning that leads into some great electric soloing. You really get an appreciation for the diversity with which Morris plays... one moment he’s playing a rough and ready solo on tracks like the aforementioned “City of Lights” and “Remember Me?” and then you get the beautifully melodic moments like in “Redemption”.Next up is the track “Where Do We Go From Here”. The song is another cool melodic rocker in the true HEARTLAND sound. The song is keyboard dominated and not too far from classic ‘80’s JOURNEY sound-wise. “One Fine Day” is a laid-back acoustic laced track. It’s as close to pure pop as you can come with its gospel-like backing vocals and melodic guitar sounds. The album’s closing track “Rotate” brings back a little of the funky sound the band tried with “Take Me Alive.” It’s highlighted with yet even more impressive guitar work from Morris.HEARTLAND has never really made a bad album in my mind but “Move On” is one of the better offerings from the band. I can see this disc getting quite a few spins in my CD player in the coming weeks. If top-notch AOR with some hard rock thrown in (and even a couple funk-influenced tracks) is your bag you could do far worse than this release. HEARTLAND is a veteran outfit that has added some new rocking sounds to their usual AOR repertoire and have made a fresh sounding album because of it.

Line-Up:

Chris Ousey - vocals (Ex-Monroe, Ex-VIRGINIA WOLF, Snakecharmer)
Steve Morris Guitar, Keyboards
Mathias Gregerson Bass

Bjarne T.Holm - drums on "Getting Ready"

Album:

British band Heartland has been around for quite some time. The core of the band, Chris Ousey on vocals and Steve Morris on guitar, bass, and keyboards have been together since 'III' (1995), their first release on the fledgling Escape Music label. In those early days Heartland played in the basic AOR style. In later years they moved on to a harder edge yet still remained melodic. 2005's 'Move On' is proably the apex of this musical move. It was a very good album which garnered good reviews across the pond. 'Mind Your Head' follows in this same vein and offers another fine collection of melodic hard rock songs. The two unmistakeable qualities of any Heartland release are the tremendous vocals of Chris Ousey and amazing skills of multiinstrumentalist Steve Morris. Mr. Ousey excels and soars with quite the range on 'Mind Your Head.' He never appears strained or out of control. Mr. Morris is equally impressive as his guitar work is never monotonous, always clear and creative. 'Magazine,' the first cut, and 'Moutain To Climb' are superb examples of these two features. There is much to enjoy on this album so I will point out some highlights. 'For Pity's Sake' throws you back to the '80's for some terrific melodic rock stuffed with great guitar and a catchy chorus. 'Last Man To Fall' is one of those songs that starts out slow and then rushed into great rock number supported by a hard-hitting rhythm section. A personal favorite, 'A Fathom I Fell,' finds Ousey at his most soulful and Morris tugging at your heart strings with his six strings. 'Mountain To Climb' is, plain and simple, a guitar driven hard rock number. Ousey nearly growls the lyrics, although never in a dirty vocal way, and Morris rips it up with some intense fret work. 'Time To Believe' is a severly heavy number that grips you if only because of Ousey's passionate vocals. The final track, 'The Best Yet To Come,' is essentially 'in-your-face' fast paced, hard driving rock and roll, a fitting conclusion to this album.Although from beginning to end this is a strong work, I did find myself yawning on several numbers. Neither 'Frozen Hearted' or 'A Richer Vein' succeeded in impressing me. I wouldn't call them 'fillers,' because they both have some redeeming qualities. Yet, somehow I've hard this all before. And 'Run For Your Life,' though a very interesting number, seemed to lack the punch that the lyrics and arrangement required. Some critics and fans will bemoan the fact that Heartland does not wish to return to the good old days. The same may say that all was said and done on 'Move On.' As for the latter, they may be right: no new ground is being broken here. However, what is here is singular consistency and craftsmanship. Ousey and Morris know their craft and pursue it wholeheartedly with good, though sometimes imperfect, results. In a world where good melodic hard rock is hard to find, particularly here in America, Heartland continues to expel the stale air of mediocrity with their music. 'Mind Your Head' is quality stuff and I can easily recommend it.

Line-Up:

Chris Ousey - vocals (Ex-Monroe, Ex-VIRGINIA WOLF, Snakecharmer)
Steve Morris - all guitars, bass & keyboards
Fredrik Oscarsson - drums

Album:

Heartland was formed by Chris Ousey and Gary Sharpe and their selftitled debut album was released on A&M Records in 1991and was produced by James “Jimbo” Barton (Trixter) that captured many AOR fans hearts. Three years later Chris and Gary released the 2nd album Wide Open (Escape reissued that album with bonus tracks) but it never got the same attention that the debut did and mostly because it was not as good as the debut.Later on, Escape Music introduced Chris to guitarist Steve Morris and a 2nd chapter of Heartland was born. Travelling Through Time is a best of double CD limited edition remastered with one new song and six unreleased Heartland songs. This is an album filled with 26 Heartland songs and I have to say that they have managed to get many of their best songs from their nine albums they have released on Escape Music. But I miss songs from the debut album and that’s a shame and I also would have wanted some liner notes from what album each song are taken from.Well, what about the unreleased songs then. The new song Search Goes On is written by Morris and Steve Overland (FM) and this is a great song and sounds like a mixture of Heartland and Shadowman. The unreleased songs The Fall, These Are The Days, A Man I’ll Never Be, Stranger In This City, I Believe and Long Long Way From Home are nice and you can hear that they are songs in the typical Heartland sound. Best out of these songs is These Are The Days which it’s a great mid-tempo AOR-song with strong melodies. The ballad A Man I’ll Never Be is great to. A very good Best Of album that shows that Heartland has released a bunch of great songs.

Album:

As It Comes is album number 6 for Heartland and once that sort of catalogue is established, it is hard to distinguish the material amongst all the other albums before it and also hard for a band to record something new to sound original and excite fans.Fortunately Heartland do a little of both, with several songs that retain the sound we know and love and pleasing long time fans, while also throwing in a few new tricks to break the flow of the album up and hopefully reach a few new fans.As a result, As It Comes is probably the best album the guys have recorded since their softer AOR debut. The main thing I can report from this album is the songs have more life to them and remain more memorable.Having said that, the only thing the guys can do to improve now, is work on their choruses. Heartland remain a band that rely on intricate and changing melodies contained in the whole song, rather than a killer chorus that sticks in your head endlessly.Opening track Starring Down The Gun has more punch than just about any other Heartland number I can think of. It suits the guys and Ousey sounds great. The more intense drumming makes an effect and the chorus, while it comes and goes very quickly is effective.Eyes Open Wide is classic Heartland at their best. A fast tempoed, but moody AOR rocker that contains a smoldering vocal and a verse layered with several guitar and vocal melodies. This is the sort of track I could always hear more of.She Blows Me Away and Willing To Fly are both good moody rock tracks, musically in the vein of the band's first album, but with the production of their recent style.Love Resurrection is another more guitar dominated track like the opening number.Whatever Gets You Through The Night is one of those new tricks I was talking about. This is possibly the darkest track the guys have ever recorded, with plenty of atmosphere and a tough chorus where the vocal takes a back seat to the guitar and musical layers. A good track. On The Run Away, Steve Morris plays some tasty guitar and Chris Ousey does some of his best Eric Martin vocals. Another classic style Heartland track. You Make Me Smile also harks back the softer AOR style of the debut with some great smooth vocals and some great pure keyboard AOR hooks. A pretty ballad.Conquer All finishes the album with some urgency - a fast moving pop rocker with a memorable chorus and more great vocals.BOTTOM LINE: A few tracks stand out as classic AOR numbers, but put the whole album together and it adds up to possibly the best Heartland album to date. At the very least it is the band's most musically diverse, even when they don't stray from the formula of past albums too much. It still leaves a positive feeling and a regard that the band are still capable of being creative and making good AOR records after several years on the job. It's also great to see an AOR band establish a real track record. Like fellow UK rockers Ten, I expect Heartland to be round for several years to come.

Album:

Heartland album is a makeshift Greatest Hits album - recorded acoustically and features songs from the 4 Heartland albums and a couple of songs from Chris Ousey's debut band Virginia Wolf. Those two songs are from their killer debut album. This also fills in time nicely before the band record their new album in October. From what I have heard over the years - starting with Tesla's Five Man Acoustic Jam - acoustic albums are generally hit or miss.I am happy to report this album is a definite hit. Heartland have more than enough material to make up an album like this and the 2 Virginia Wolf songs only add to the quality. There are some of my favourite Heartland songs and a few new ones as a bonus and the production is nothing short of full studio album quality.Chris Ousey's voice is in fine shape and sounds like it is growing with every record he makes. Steve Morris is also in fine form. This album highlights just how good a guitarist he is with numerous displays of fantastic guitar plucking and acoustic solo's.Chris Ousey manages to squeeze real emotion out of his voice. He always sounds at his peak when reaching for that higher note. Just check out the latter moments of Carrie Ann, Wide Open and Carved In Stone. The first and utterly classic Virginia Wolf album is represented by Knife Edge and Make It Tonight - two killer tracks. I was pleasantly surprised to see the latter included - being one of Ousey's best moody ballads. The only other track from that album I would love to have seen was Take A Chance. Next time maybe? Nice also to hear Wide Open getting reworked. I always loved that track, great to see it upgraded from demo status. Never Never Land is first up of the new tunes. Another very good Heartland pop song of some length, with plenty of hooks, a good extended acoustic solo from Steve Morris and extended instrumental ending.Keeping The Faith Alive will no doubt become a favourite in years to come. This soft ballad has real class and I think would go down real well during a acoustic interlude live. One Night is another simple pop rock track with a simple, yet catchy, chorus. The title track When Angels Call is a more complex song with no major chorus, but a melody that entrenches itself in your mind.I really like I Count The Days. This typical Heartland ballad is given a strong re-working, with a tremendous vocal from Chris Ousey. Just take a listen towards the end where he really puts some emotion into it.I have written a lot here for just an acoustic album, so I will sum it up before I start repeating myself. This is essential for any Heartland or The Distance fan and could hopefully bring new fans into the fold with some great new versions of classic songs and is highly recommended for those who look for something a little different occasionally.

Album:

Chris Ousey’s career goes from strength to strength. His first main achievement was with Polygram recording artists "Monroe" with guitarist Gary Sharpe, but Chris never made it to the album as he was snatched in the pre-production stages by John Bonham's son, Jason, for his new band of the moment, Virginia Wolf. The band notched up 250,000 album sales between two records in the form of their self titled debut (produced by Queen's Roger Taylor) and "Push" (produced by Keith Olsen). The band also managed to tour with "The Firm" in the USA.Heartland was actually formed by Chris with his old band mate Gary Sharpe and their self titled debut on A & M Records was produced by James "Jimbo" Barton. Barton eventually teamed up with Heartland bassist Phil Brown and the pair went on to produce Trixter, Steve Perry and Queensryche. Prior to this, Heartland had toured with Mr. Big in support of their debut album.Chris and Gary later got together and put out "Wide Open" through Germany's Long Island label in 1994, which ended up as one of the company's best sellers. In late 1994 Escape Music's Khalil Turk introduced Chris to guitarist Steve Morris. Steve is a guitar virtuoso and as experienced as Chris in his own field having recorded two albums with Epic recording artist's "Export" (Living in fear of the Private Eye and Export) as well as touring with their own independent album supporting Slade. Through Export he got to work with Tony Bongiovi and Lance Quinn as well as writing with Bob Halligan Jnr. and Michael Bolton. Finally, Steve became guitarist for Ex-Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan and recorded three albums in addition to co-writing all the material, before he hooked up with Chris Ousey. The album Heartland III, which was essentially the first release on the then newly formed Escape Music label, has done extremely well since it's release in November, 1995 and a year later is still very much a popular album. This third outing was considered more commercial than the previous two albums, but nevertheless kept the rock fan's respect as well as gaining a wider audience. On February 28th, 1997 the brand new album "Bridge of Fools" was unleashed, with a return to rock roots and more of a 'band' feel. Along with Chris on lead vocals and Steve on guitars, Say keyboards player Chris Lloyd and original Heartland drummer Steve Gibson join the line-up, together with bassist Tim Duncan. At this point in time, Escape Music was working on many other projects, one of these being Vancouver based band “Pokerface” (Life’s A Gamble ESM 008). This particular outfit is fronted by Darcy Deutsch (Prism) and features guitarist/song writer/producer Kenny “Kaos” Loney. Kenny was to become very much a part of Heartland when Steve was tied up recording “Dream Catcher” with Ian Gillan. Hence, the collaboration between Chris and Kenny, culminating in the release of a melodic masterpiece called “The Distance” in November, 1997 which coincided with a tour in Germany supporting Brazen Abbot and Jeff Paris. At the time of the tour Steve had completed his work with Ian Gillan and so was able to play alongside Kenny in the set.Soon after, the production started for “Miracles by Design”, the brand new Heartland album. This fifth album was recorded in Parr Street Studio’s (Belonging to Genesis’s management) using Ken Nelson as sound engineer. As keyboards player Chris Lloyd (Say) had recently been injured in a car crash, Steve Morris had to finish the keyboards before the tapes went to Vancouver for completion. Kenny made his contribution to the album and “Distance” cohorts John Counsel and Dave Hopia added keys and bass respectively. The mixing was carried out by Loverboy/Blackstone man Paul Dean in his own Vancouver studios and mastering is by the very same man who did the job for the new Van Halen album. No expense has been spared and the end result shows, every note being crystal clear.Miracles By Design will take Heartland into a new dimension.

Chris Ousey (ex VIRGINIA WOLF) and company crashed on the scene with this amazing perfection of combustion Melodic Rock and AOR energy in the self titled debut from Heartland.Released in 1991 on A&M Records, HEARTLAND’s self-titled debut album is regarded as one of the finest releases in British Melodic Rock history.I love re-issues and certain labels that do it the right way and the German label Yesterrock brings forward a very hard to find collectors album from Heartland. For many long time fans of melodic rock you will no doubt hold this album as one of the best that has ever come out of the Melodic Rock circles and it has really stood the test of time. For newer fans of the band the original line up consisted of the very soulful and charismatic vocals of Chris Ousey, guitarist Gary Sharpe (ex MONROE).Is hard to believe the band now with a new line up still around and still lead by Ousey they have released 10 albums . Chris’s voice has always reminded of a young Eric Martin from Mr Big, that perfect blend of soul edge that meshes each song so well together. And to this day his vocals still sound amazing, but on this album you hear that early 90’s melodic rock bravado that you correlate with such bands as Bad English, FM, Strangeways, etc.The record is a true staple of the genre and here you’ll be please to find a ton of heavy hitters, if melody is your thing you will find a bunch of great tunes like the infectious bridge chorus of “Carrie Anne”, alongside another awesome track with the powerhouse vocals of Ousey on the high riser “Don’t Cast Your Shadow”. Another great slower ballad tune comes crawling towards you with the amazing chorus in “Fight Fire with Fire”, which displays in exemplary fashion the capabilities of these bands in their prime. What a terrific record from top to bottom, from every bass line to each inducing melody that gripes the core of the musical structure into heavenly groove. Chris Ousey is a great vocalist I don’t have enough great things to say about the man, from past to future he still demand respect in every sense of the word. The crisp guitars of Gary Sharpe are quintessential in every breath of life sparked into each of these classic melodic rock staples. The remastered production is crystal clear, I can hear those keys man and who they bring a tingle of AOR to my senses, old school too. What a great period that was for the British Melodic Rock scene in general, so many bands are now reappearing and resurrecting their career. Luckily for Heartland they are still around and still plan on trucking and Ousey has a new solo album coming out in November as well, so even more exciting news. This debut is a great collectors item that any fan of the genre should not live without. Highly Recommended.!!!!

Album:

After 14 years of silence, Heartland is back with a monster of an album, titled "Into The Future". Chris Ousey has had an excellent singing career that goes way back to the times of Monroe and Virginia Wolf and along the way we have had The Distance, Ozone and Snakecharmer, but he will always be known for the much loved Heartland. He is nicknamed 'the man with the golden tonsils' and that is a fine accolade that he has earned. His effortless vocal range has gained him a top spot in the world of classic UK hard rock.Heartland was formed in 1990 by Chris Ousey and Gary Sharpe. Steve Morris joined in 1995 when "III" was released, the first Heartland album for Escape Music. Steve has been in the band since then right up the 2007 release "Mind Your Head"."Into The Future" marks a new era for Heartland. The brand-new release and a fantastic new line-up with Chris's vocals still showing no signs of tiring! This marks this 10th studio album, a milestone indeed. Here we have an album that reflects the prowess of all the musicians involved on this album, featuring the fantastic Mike Slamer (City Boy / Streets / Seventh Key / Steelhouse Lane) and Ged Rylands (Ten / Rage Of Angels / Tyketto) along with the seasoned Barish Kepic, Wayne Banks and David Anthony."Into The Future" is typically Heartland, the style is immediately recognized, yet there is a fresh vibrant feel that gives the fans something new. The song "Foreign Land" has already had an airing and is a typical song from the album, this is what melodic rock is all about!

Line-Up:
