Bio:

The history of ZENO began to take shape in the early seventies when Zeno Roth and Ule W. Ritgen formed their first band (BLACK ANGEL) in Hanover. Influenced by classic rock bands like Cream, Yes and Jimi Hendrix, both musicians played together for some years while attending university. When this band had broken up in 1977, Ule Ritgen played bass in the band of Zeno’s brother, Uli Jon Roth, appearing on three Electric Sun albums.By 1980, Zeno Roth and Ule Ritgen were again working together, heading in a new direction. Zeno recalls: ” The music became more melodic, with stronger vocal parts than anything we had done before. Instead of just two guitars, we added keyboard parts and background harmonies. It started to sound like what we were striving for.”The complete line-up of ZENO was formed when Michael Flexig joined as a lead singer. On the basis of superb demo tracks, ZENO were awarded one of the largest recording contracts for a new band in rock history. The origin of the name “Zeno” traces back to a Greek philosopher, “Zeno of Citium (Cyprus)”, who founded the philosophy calledStoicism. Zeno (Zenon)’s philosophical system included logic and theory of knowledge, physics, and ethics — the latter being central. He held that happiness lies in living in accordance with the laws of Nature and Divine Reason, which governs the universe. A deep thinker, Zeno Roth, as a successor of such a Greek philosophical mind, is gifted with writing as well as making music. After the first album Zeno had been released in 1986 he went more into the writing field, as the music business at that time was not advantageous to melodious rock. However, the door to his music was knocked open anew by the Japanese listeners who loved “Eastern Sun” from the re-released album Zeno in 1993. It fits together that the East, the country of the “Rising Sun” should be directly responsible for rekindling Zeno’s desire to continue creating his music. As a next step, Zenology was delivered in 1995, with songs that had been composed in the non-active period of the band ZENO. Although those songs were not newly composed, some of them hit many people with the everlasting touch of ZENO’s powerful melody. (Like “Together”).In 1998, the third album Listen To The Light was released. It gained a high reputation with its melodious lyricism, containing profound and yet positive messages, spiritual, social and political, concepts for the future, plus his amazing guitar playing. In April 1999, when Zero Corporation was liquidated, the deal was taken over by Toshiba EMI(EMI Music Japan). In the annual reader’s pop poll of 1998 by Burrn! magazine, Listen To The Light was voted No. 2 as an album, and Zeno Roth reached the position No. 2 (guitarist) and No. 3 (songwriter). “Meet Me At The Rainbow” reached No. 9 as a tune. In August 2000, Zeno moved to the United Kingdom and continued recordings for the new album. In October 2003, he decided to release the past three albums (Zeno, Zenology, Listen To The Light), in a fully re-mastered and enhanced edition, also with bonus tracks, called The Making Of ZENO, which include the legendary demo takes, leading up to the first deal with EMI UK. In 2004 Zeno finalized the digital remaster of the past albums, and in addition Zenology II, a new compilation of previously unreleased material, was released. In November, the first album Zeno was re-released in Europe as well.In September 2006, the new studio album Runway to the Gods is released. No. 19 of the Oricon album Chart in Japan on the very first day. Again, Zeno Roth is voted No. 2 as a guitarist in the annual Burrn! poll 2006. Here are the complete results for ZENO: “2006 The 23rd Annual Burrn! Readers’ Pop Poll” *Guitarist: #2 Zeno Roth *Album Cover: #2 Runway To The Gods *Songwriter: #3 Zeno Roth *Tune: #3 Fanfares Of Love *Pleasure: #5 ZENO released a new album *Album: #8 Runway To The Gods *Group: #27 ZENO” In 2009, Zeno moves to Japan, where he is working on numerous new projects.Roth died on 5 February 2018. According to his brother, he had been sick for several years.

Album:

This is a very special post here; musician Zeno Roth, younger brother of Scorpions founder Uli Jon Roth, passed away at age 61 few weeks ago after battling years of illness. His band, ZENO, released a bunch of wonderful albums between the Eighties / Nineties, and this is our homage here with his most celebrated LP - and for us one the best '80s albums in general - debut "Zeno" in its Japanese remastered reissue plus 5 bonus tracks.Indeed, for me, "Zeno" is one of the most impressive debuts from the '80s. It has it all: AOR melodies, Melodic Rock catchiness, and Hard Rock punch. Think Boston, Queen and Scorpions rolled into one, but Zeno had his own, unique identity and sound.Although "Zeno" was not a hit LP by any means, the album’s back story reveals that the music industry expected great things from Zeno Roth. Zeno were the subject of a bidding war among labels, and in the end Zeno wound up receiving one of the biggest contracts ever for a brand new band. But the story gets convoluted, with Zeno taking longer than expected to record and going over budget in the process. Well, it paid its dividends, believe me.The production on "Zeno" is pin-perfect. It’s obvious that meticulous attention was paid to capturing a full, rich sound on this record (more than likely the reason Zeno was over-budget).Roth’s guitar work is exceptional, and his compositions seem to mirror his own reputation as a spiritual and philosophical guy. The vocals are done by Michael Flexig, a man who sings in an impossibly high register and has the pipes to give credence to these celestial and uber-melodic pieces. The original "Zeno" album consists of ten proper songs - and one brief, incredibly good instrumental titled 'Sunset'. All tracks are excellent, different, unique, exceptional.'Emergency' is pure '80s AOR with its fantastic choruses, then exquisite cuts like 'Heart On The Wing', 'A Little More Love' (penned by bassist U. Winsomie Ritgen), the dreamy 'Don't tell the Wind' and 'Circles Of Dawn' always bring a cheerful smile to my otherwise hideously ugly mug.As bonus, we have the non-album track 'Don't count me Out' and early versions from some of the best songs of the album.Uplifting melodic hard rock is the motto in "Zeno" with emphasis on spirituality and pictorial lyrical themes which more than establishes the potential of the three basic members. For that matter you can expect super melodic guitar leads and stylish chords, Ritgen's trademark bass playing and Flexing's immense choruses; still as a sign of times, Michael sings incredibly high on the majority of the album therefore not making full use of his incredible range (which he uncovers on the follow up Zeno albums). This is a little masterpiece of an album that after all these years still visits my CD player regularly. R.I.P. Zeno Roth, and thanks for your incredible music.

Album:

The name Roth guarantees musical quality. In one case (Uli Jon) as in the other case (Zeno). The long-awaited third prank by guitar sorcerer and songwriter Zeno offers the well-known trademarks and impresses like its excellent predecessors with sophisticated arrangements and killer hooks at its finest. And although you can hear all the songs that they are the result of many years of work and have been worked out to the last detail, the Chose sounds anything but artificial or cramped. In terms of production technology, too, people have made nails with their heads, which is why "Listen To The Light" rushes powerfully bold and powerful out of the boxes. A real mood cannon that strikes hit after hit without exception. Songs like the crunchy opener 'Goddess Of Sunrise', the groovy 'Love In Your Eyes', the driving 'Meet Me At The Rainbow' or the epic staged ballad 'I Would Die For You' reminiscent of the best meat loaf material with the best of what the genre has produced recently. And that's just the first third of this excellent disc, which leaves nothing to be desired in every respect and has zero gap fillers at the start. Thumbs up for what is probably the best AOR record from the Teutonic perspective since the last fair warning opus. Go for it today!

Album:

Zeno Roth is known to be the brother of ex-SCORPIONS guitarist Uli John Roth. In the mid-eighties, ZENO played with acts like QUEEN, BLACK SABBATH, KEEL and KROKUS. In the meantime, the band has reunited after unpleasant experiences with major companies and taken themselves under the wing of the small but fine label A2Z, a sub-label of MILESTONE MUSIC (among others CROWN OF THORNS,TAMPLIN, STONE FURY).Melodic hard rock booms out of my speakers, fantastically produced and interestingly arranged songs like 'Together' take the nostalgic rock fan back to the eighties, when music still consisted of melodies.Fantastic, the solos (often two-part) let you melt away, the polyphonic vocals are unparalleled...I could go on raving, but fans of AOR and melodic hard rock probably already own this album anyway. A must buy!

According to his brother, he had been sick for several years.

Album:

Zenology II is a new compilation of previously unpublished and unreleased Zeno songs. All of these tracks were recorded between 1983 and 1989 in studios in or around Hannover, Germany.Unlike Zenology I, these songs were recorded in a "live" context with a full band line-up, including a drummer. Initially, these songs were recorded as "demo's" for various record companies. However, they have been further enhanced by Zeno Roth's recent re-mastering, plus his addition of new guitars, keyboards and choir.Collection of great melodic rock songs with the awesome guitar playing by Zeno.I personaly think Michael Flexig is a good vocalist , but I can understand that some people dislike him ( just like Graham Bonnet and Rob Moratti you love him or hate him ).The production isn't top class either , but good enough.A very good album , although Zeno has recorded better ( classic ) stuff in the past.Zeno Roth - the younger brother of Uli Jon Roth - was born in 1956 and formed his first band, Black Angel, in 1974. While playing and recording with several other German bands (Karthago a.o.), he wrote a lot of songs between 1979 and 1983, that would later be used for Zeno, the band that he formed with Ule Ritgen in 1984. As soon as the first demo was released, a lot of record companies lined up to sign the band. Deals with Warner Publishing UK and EMI UK quickly followed and Zeno started recording his first album in 1985, using many recording studios and a lot of famous guest musicians, such as Don Airey, Chuck Bürgi, Stuart Elliot, Carl Marsh and Chris Thompson. Since its original release, "Zeno" has been rereleased quite a few times. When it was rereleased in Japan in 1993, it created quite a stir and sold over 25,000 copies! It led to a deal with Zero Corporation in 1994 and two albums would follow: "Zenology" in 1995 and "Listen To The Light" in 1998.What we have here with "Zenology II" is not a new Zeno album, but a compilation of previously unreleased Zeno songs, that have been recorded in studios in or around Hannover, between 1983 and 1989. The quality of the songs is quite good (which doesn't come as a surprise to me), but the sound differs from track to track and is - at times - considerably bombastic (no surprise either). Anyway, it's best to consider this album as a useful leg up to the next studio album, which may be expected soon (I hope).
