Bio:

Toto is an American rock band formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. The band's current lineup consists of Joseph Williams (lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards, vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards), Steve Lukather (guitars, vocals), and Keith Carlock (drums). Bass player Nathan East is currently touring with Toto as a guest musician, as Mike Porcaro is too ill to tour. Toto is known for a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B and jazz.David Paich and Jeff Porcaro had played together as session musicians on several albums and decided to form a band. David Hungate, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro and Bobby Kimball were recruited before their first album release. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the late 1970s and 1980s, beginning with the band's eponymous debut released in 1978. With the release of the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Toto IV (1982), Toto became one of the best-selling music groups of their era. They are best known for the Top 5 hits "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", and "Africa". Several changes to the lineup have been made over the years. In 2008, Lukather announced his departure from the band, and the remaining band members later went their separate ways. In the summer of 2010, Toto reformed and went on a short European tour, with a new lineup, to benefit Mike Porcaro, who had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is no longer an active member of the band. The band has released a total of 17 albums, and have sold over 35 million albums to date. The group was honored with several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.

Album:

The excellent TOTO new greatest hits CD triggered some requests, such as this out of print, Japanese Cardboard Sleeve miniLP replica, remastered version of "Kingdom Of Desire", the last album recorded by master drummer Jeff Porcaro before his surprising death. After burning through three lead vocalists (culminating with Jean-Michael Byron) for "Kingdom Of Desire" it was decided that Steve Lukather would take the full lead vocal slot.First of all, I must say that for me, Toto is the greatest Rock band on Earth. Secondly, Steve Lukather is among the 3 best Rock&pop (and beyond) guitarists of all time. That being said, from me, "Kingdom Of Desire" is one of the best Toto albums ever. For sure, their most rocking, guitar-driven, almost melodic hard rock CD.This is a very 'early '90s' US recording, with sonic treatment very close to Schon's Hardline debut, even Bad English second album, etc. From the start with "Gypsy Train"... wow, that's a really guitar driven tune, with Lukater's unique mammoth tone and his killer lead vocals. Listen to the tremolo tricks and tapping technique all over the song. Lukather friendship with Eddie Van Halen was at its peak around the era, and it paid its dividends along the album. There's a balls-out rocking crunch in "Don't Chain My Heart", "How Many Times," or bowel-shaking title track "Kingdom Of Desire". "Never Enough" is a terrific bass-pumped midtempo where Lukather guitars shine again, and his vocals fit like a glove. If you want a lesson-free on how to play 'Rock rhythm guitar', just listen to "She Knows The Devil". This is an awesome heavy-funk tune plenty of punch and energy to die for. Seriously, it kills."Wings Of Time" is simply outstanding to me: it's classic '80s Toto but with that early '90s production, atmospheric, lush, crystal clear.Of course there's terrific ballads here; I absolutely love "Only You" with its clean guitars and Steve's crooning vocals, while "The Other Side" is pure Toto (seems taken from IV but with an updated sound). Then you have "2 Hearts", which is almost a power ballad. Listening to it closely it brings to my mind Black Sabbath / Tony Martin first album, and even Phenomena. Awesome song. For those missing the great Jeff Porcaro, you will be delighted by his work on the instrumental jazz-fusion monster "Jake To The Bone" plenty of terrific beats and fills. There are several versions of "Kingdom Of Desire".One with 12 songs including as bonus a live version of Hendrix's "Little Wing" from the 1990 Planet Earth tour. There's other with the song "Kick Down The Walls" and no "Little Wing", and the original Japanese pressing including both.Strangely, this Japanese Cardboard Sleeve miniLP replica does not include "Kick Down The Walls", but we have added it as 'extra bonus'.Regarding "Kick Down The Walls", there's a story behind the track. It was provided by Danny Kortchmar (co-writer of some songs on the album) and the version recorded is a pre-production demo. It never was properly finished. However, Toto decided to release it as it is anyway because it was the very, very last recording of Jeff Porcaro. That's why it sounds different from the rest of the album."Kingdom Of Desire", as happens with all Toto albums, it's a different record, a rare beast in their discography. It's a rocking, guitar-driven album, and where Steve Lukather proves a fine vocalist (and extremely underappreciated). There's classic Toto songs - especially the ballads - and others in the aforementioned 'hard rocking' approach, which I love.I know many of you never heard "Kingdom Of Desire". If you are reading this blog it's because you like anything hard rock-related. Do yourself a favor and get this album.Yeah, big Toto fan here, of all times, and "Kingdom Of Desire" is among my Top-3 favorites from them.

Album:

With this "TOTO - XX : 1977-1997" we complete here the TOTO's 4-disc Japanese Cardboard Sleeve miniLP replica reissue campaign (sold out), fully remastered."Toto XX: 1977-1997" was released to celebrate the band's 20th Anniversary, including previously unreleased songs from all eras, outtakes, and live tracks from the band's 20-year career.Among the highlights there's the brilliant AOR tune 'Goin' Home', recorded during Bobby Kimball's brief first reunion with the band in 1989, prior to the record company's decision to replace him with new lead singer Jean-Michel Byron. The song had later been recorded by Joseph Williams (co-written by him) and released on his 1997 album '3'.Another great tune - and I scratch my head wondering why it never was released before - is the big ballad "Right Part Of Me" recorded in 1984. With lead vocals perfomed by Kimball, an exquisite co-production by master Greg Ladanyi, and strings arranged by James Newton Howard / performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, this track easily could have been a hit in the mid-Eightes.It's great see that some older, previously unheard Toto songs have been finally released, like 'Mrs. Johnson', 'Love Is a Man's World' and 'Miss Sun' (all recorded in 1977) or the excellent 'Tale of a Man' (1979).If you want material from the more 'commercial' Toto era, the bright 'Last Night' (recorded in 1987), and 'In a Word' and 'Modern Eyes' (both from 1986) will make your day for your classic AOR needs.Additionally, we have some stupendous live recordings: the rocking take of "On the Run" is to die for, while the extended performance of 'Africa' captured at the Standard Bank Arena, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1997, is simply great.Your Toto collection isn't complete without "TOTO - XX : 1977-1997", a collection of previously unreleased great tunes. A must for the fans, and a fine slice of classic AOR for all aficionados to this genre.

Album:

The excellent TOTO new 2018 album triggered some requests, such as this out of print, Japanese Cardboard Sleeve miniLP replica, remastered version of "Mindfields".After a 14 year absence, legendary vocalist Bobby Kimball was asked to re-join Toto. With "Mindfields" Toto marked his return to the fold for first time fans rejoice. With "Mindfields", Toto started its 'renaissance' in terms of composition, something that would be completed in 2006's Falling In Between album. The ingredients had started to come together for the band's creative "rebirth", making this album the band's "re-conception".Alongside the 'classic' Toto sound & style, here the band try to find their new footing after the return of Kimball. And even when some tracks are too much expansive ("High Price Of Hate" clocks almost 10 minutes), all are admirable attempts at genres the band had not previously visited. For classic Toto, check the excellent "After You've Gone", the rocking "Mysterious Ways", the very '80s "No Love", the elegant title track with Kimball's great work, the punchy rocker "Caught In The Balance" or the awesome ballad "Last Love".We find an exquisite composition in "Better World (Pts. 1, 2, & 3)", and more classic Toto circa 1986 with the joyful "Mad About You".In the style of they late '80s sound, "Melanie" is that kind of mid-tempo AOR tunes we all love. Then "Selfish" is pretty hard rocker and has a catchy bounce with terrific guitars. Then Toto experiments with "High Price of Hate" and its bluesy progressive side, and the Japanese bonus track "Spanish Steps Of Rome", while atmospheric and instrospective (a new Toto side), showcases how great this band is.At the time of its release, many didn't understood "Mindfields". With Bobby Kimball back into the band some were expecting another "Toto IV". No folks, Toto never repeat themselves, and as said, this album was the start of a 'rebirth'.There's some experimentation, a couple of long tracks, but mostly classic trademark Toto melodies. It contains all the elements that made this band great: tight playing, stinging lead guitar, soaring vocals and incredible production. Speaking about the sound, this Japanese remaster is amazing.

Line Up:

Bobby Kimball - lead and backing vocals
Steve Lukather - guitars, lead and backing vocals
David Paich - keyboards, lead and backing vocals
Mike Porcaro - bass, cello on "After You've Gone"
Simon Phillips - drums; percussion, loops

Album:

This 2015 Rock Candy Records campaign of TOTO's most celebrated '80s albums 'Remastered & Reloaded' ends with the celebrated "The Seventh One".With vocalist Joseph Williams firmly settled into the line up, for the first time Lukather & Co. looked outside for production guidance, recruiting two members of Little Feat (George Massenburg and Billy Payne) to oversee the recording sessions, resulting in one of the strongest albums of their long and productive career. "The Seventh One", originally issued in 1988, set a new standard for the band, with critics and fans heaping praise on its contents. Forceful and dynamic, the tracks benefited from a sharper and more defined sound, aided and abetted by a brace of stellar songs. Tracks such as ‘Pamela’ (the natural successor to ‘Rosanna’), ‘Only The Children’ and ‘Home Of The Brave’ hit the spot dead centre. And look out for ‘Stay Away’, an incredible duet featuring Linda Ronstadt, containing Steve Lukather’s heaviest ever guitar riff. While 1982's IV swept the Grammys and is thus much more well known, "The Seventh One" is at least equal in quality if not superior due to it's pristine production and a greater sense of musical adventurousness, integrating steel drums, Spanish guitar and other musical styles and elements not traditionally heard in rock&pop music.Of course, there's also the glossy AOR sounds that made Toto so great."The Seventh One" is one of those albums where each track is inherently catchy, where the hooks get under your skin and get your toes tapping, hands clapping, or fingers snapping. The vocal harmonies are tight as always, while Steve Lukather's guitar chops are even a bit more crisp than before as having Joseph Williams singing lead allowed him to concentrate more on his guitar.'Anna' is one of two songs that Lukather takes lead on, and he does an excellent job. Being such a ballad mush I found myself wishing I could date an Anna and have it end just so I could sing this one to try and patch things up. Then came the song that haunts me to this day: 'Stop Loving You', one of my all-time Toto favorites, and also one that made its way onto several mixtapes. If you people don’t get the majesty that IS the late Jeff Porcaro (RIP) on drums, then listen to 'Mushanga' and you’ll feel pretty dumb. The flamenco solo from Lukather is highly impressive, too.Things take a slow and groovy turn for 'A Thousand Years' before Lukather grabs the mic again on the terrific 'These Chains' which has some cool, understated horns. And as far as album closers go, 'Home of the Brave' may just be one of the greatest I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. 'Home of the Brave' never fails to get my blood pumping and make me feel like I can take on the world. Paich does lead vocals on the first part of each verse before Williams comes storming in and everyone just nails his parts to perfection. It’s nearly seven minutes but you wouldn’t even know it. And when Lukather takes off on that riff, that RIFF that leads the band out of the record I still get goosebumps."The Seventh One" Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records sound million bucks, with punchy bass lines, great snare presence and clean vocals / guitars.Sadly, this reissue does not include the title track, originally only featured on the Japanese version of the album and on the B-side of the 'Pamela' single. But it's OK, as this reissue campaign is based on the American original master tapes.Your AOR collection is not complete without Toto's "The Seventh One", and this remaster is a no-brainer purchase.

Album:

Rock Candy specialists have 'Remastered & Reloaded' TOTO's most celebrated '80s albums few weeks ago. Let's go now with their triple platinum-certified "TOTO IV".There comes tipping point in every artist’s career; a moment where decisions have to be made and a course of action needs to be taken. By the time Toto had reached this, their fourth album, matters were building to a head.Their previous two albums had commercially under-achieved and the label was getting itchy feet about their future prospects. So, it was with the greatest deliberation that the band embarked on the road to "Toto IV", vowing to throw everything and the kitchen sink into its creation.History shows that this album was a triumphant success, but the road to redemption was not without sacrifice, hard work and dedication. It is clear that a huge amount of creativity and talent formed the backbone of "Toto IV", songs crafted to utter perfection and all wrapped up in pin-point production. The recording took many months and the band was allowed a much larger than average recording budget. At a time when most bands were using a single 24-track recorder Toto used as many as 3 separate 24-track recorders at the same time. The 24-track recorders were linked with a computerized SMPTE timecode system that allowed for up to 69 individual tracks of sound simultaneously. The result was HUGE.Musicianship is also impeccable showcasing talent beyond belief, of an apparently altogether otherworldly nature. Achieving sales in excess of triple platinum (only in the USA) and notching up an eye-popping six Grammy awards, it also spawned three huge global hit singles, namely ‘Africa’, ‘Rosanna’ and ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’, songs that epitomise the band’s first rate AOR pedigree.‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ is one of my favorite Toto songs ever. Written and sung by Steve Lukather, this tune shot up the charts in 1983 after Toto won the Grammys including best record, album and producer of the year. Timothy B. Schmit, the sweet-voiced member of Poco and The Eagles, is featured on its soaring chorus.Perhaps eclipsed by the major hits, 'Good For You' deserves mention as one of this project’s drum-tight, lesser-known gems. It’s a terrific example of how Toto, at the height of its powers, mixed and matched so many styles with class.Co-written by Lukather and erstwhile frontman Bobby Kimball, the song finds Kimball in all of his full-throated glory — matching the lyric’s unvarnished, carnal desire. He performed, then as now, with a reckless, edgy abandon, something that probably contributed to the reedy texture of his voice sometimes these days. The arrangements and instrumentation behind him did the rest. Also 'Make Believe' is a little diamond. This David Paich-written, Bobby Kimball-sung rocker wasn’t a huge hit, but it illustrated something — with every tough Steve Lukather riff — that’s often lost in the ballad-driven public persona of Toto; they could (and can) Rock.Other favorites are the highly underrated 'It's A Feeling' and 'Lovers In The Night' all of which are a display of a band at the absolute height of its musical creativity."TOTO IV" was a triumph of incredible proportions for a group that had been written off by so many and, with bitchy cruelty, labelled as a faceless bunch of skilled session musicians. It is without doubt one of the most important AOR albums of all time.Great, crystal clear remaster by Rock Candy Records.

Album:

Rock Candy specialists have 'Remastered & Reloaded' TOTO's most celebrated '80s albums few weeks ago. One of my favorites from the band is the absolutely mid-80s sounding "Fahrenheit", which also marked the debut of Joseph Williams on lead vocals."Fahrenheit" is an album of varied musical goals and textures, yet for the major public is known for its two ballads, both of them Top 40 singles. For instance, “Can’t Stand It Any Longer” — co-written by Steve Lukather, David Paich and Joseph Williams — found a tough melodic rock groove on Fahrenheit, and it proved to be a worthy showcase for Joseph Williams’ grittier style. The title track also had a crisp, funky groove. But neither became singles. Instead, “I’ll Be Over You” streaked to No. 11 and “Without Your Love” went to No. 38.“The pop hits, if you listen to the whole album, they would take a single off of it — and it would be the ballad, or a softer song,” Steve Lukather said. “But there was always strong rock stuff on all Toto albums. If you come see us live, people will say: These guys are a lot tougher live than we would have imagined. That’s just the way we play. We’re not trying to prove anything. We’ll morph from style to style.”Elsewhere, Toto’s "Fahrenheit" is highlighted by “We Can Make It Tonight,” an upbeat rock&pop gem; the more muscular and AOR “Till the End”; the smooth “Somewhere Tonight”; and “Lea,” a diaphanous love song from Steve Porcaro. But all you’ll ever hear on the radio, for better or for worse, is “I’ll Be Over You.” And you know what? It's a true justice this song become a hit, it's one of the greatest ballads of all time.Fahrenheit‘s big hit did mark another success for the songwriting team of Steve Lukather and guru Randy Goodrum. He’s contributed to hits from a number artists including Chicago (“If She Would Have Been Faithful”), Journey’s Steve Perry (“Oh Sherrie,” “Foolish Heart”) and a host of others. Goodman has since worked on many of Lukather’s solo albums, beginning with his 1989 self-titled release."Fahrenheit" is another essential Toto album, catchy, with a distinctive sound, varied as always, even finding an exquisite album-closing collaboration between Lukather, David Paich and jazzman Miles Davis. That might have seemed like an odd-ball choice, if not for the guitarist’s history with one of jazz music’s most mercurial figures. This 2015 Rock Candy remastering is dynamic, crisp in the true middle Eighties tradition. I really dig it.

Album:

Rock Candy specialists have 'Remastered & Reloaded' TOTO's most celebrated '80s albums few weeks ago. Let's start with the catchy "Isolation".For this album, Lukather & Co. made the drastic decision to fire vocalist Bobby Kimball, replaced by the awesome Fergie Frederiksen (previously of pomp purists Trillion and Le Roux)."Isolation" begins with 'Carmen', an excellent opener, catchy and engaging thanks to the duet between David Paich and Frederiksen's gorgeous pipes, and it provides a good idea of what is about to come: the songs won't really slow down except for 'Lion' (which is a midtempo anyway) and for the single true ballad of the album 'How Does It Feel', making the entire work energetic and really pleasant to listen to.Considering the high number of ballads Toto provided with some of the previous albums, having just one here feels strange. If we also consider that the song manages to be unforgettable, we find what makes this album so good as all the previous ones: consistency.Every song manages to get stuck in your head. If I could use only one word to describe this album, it would be "catchy". Everything, from the vocals to the instrumentation, is catchy.Speaking about the mentioned consistency, Toto keep firing one killer track after another: 'Angel Don't Cry', 'How Does It Feel', the terrific title track, 'Change Of Heart'... all are true '80s AOR gems.Sure, catchiness plays a huge role here (thanks mainly to Fergie Frederiksen's harmonies) but the goodness of the instrumentation must not be forgotten.Steve Lukather shines through the entire album and provides driving riffs ('Change Of Heart', 'Carmen') and solos. Actually, the solos are often short, but have the right punch and are carried by the superb keyboards.A mention of honor goes in fact to the keyboardists: David Paich and Steve Porcaro not only help at giving an identity to each song, but often end up being the stars instead of Lukather ('Mr. Friendly', 'Change of Heart' or 'Endless'). Last but not least, Jeff Porcaro provides another stunning performance with the drumming, keeping it catchy yet aggressive without being overly minimal.'Isolation' is one of the most consistent albums in Toto's career. It's catchy, it's energetic, it's highly replayable, it's solid, it's awesomely well played, and it provides a lot of AOR anthems to sing to. Plus, it provides zero forgettable tracks. The Rock Candy remaster is surprisingly loud - yet not brickwalled - giving the album and even highly pumping output.

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl has announced a March 20 release date for TOTO XIV in Europe, with The UK and Oceania on 3/23, and North America on March 24. The album will hit retail globally, with specific dates for territories in Asia, South America and others to follow. Configurations include CD, with a deluxe edition available featuring a "making of" documentary on DVD, expanded booklet that includes an in depth story and interview about the new album alongside exclusive pictures in ecol-book packaging. Additionally Toto XIV will be available as a 2LP vinyl set, and a Super Deluxe limited edition which includes the Deluxe CD/DVD edition, 2LP vinyl, an exclusive poster, t-shirt (large size only), and lithograph. The album will be available via all digital retailers. The new album is a realized vision three plus decades in the making exhibiting world-class musicianship, masterful arrangements, topical lyrical commentary, and melodies that the collective genius of Lukather, Paich, Porcaro, Williams and their assembled band-mates bring to life. TOTO XIV is the band’s first album of new material since 2006’s Falling In Between. However, the band personally considers the new album to be the true follow-up to TOTO IV, which made the band global superstars.Keyboardist Steve Porcaro reveals, "This is opposite of going through the motions. We are treating this like it is Toto V, our follow-up to TOTO IV. We just want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Be true to ourselves and make the best music we can. Entertain people which is what we were put on this Earth for." Keyboardist David Paich reflects, "I think of TOTO as a unit and a band that carries a responsibility when it goes out there in to the public consciousness. There is so much negativity and darkness that I think you have to be as Quincy Jones puts it, 'beams of light that blast through the darkness'."As they began the process of a return the studio, all of the principle long-term members brought their A-game to the table. Guitarist Steve "Luke" Lukather offers, "When you put us in a room, and everybody brings in their pieces, the next thing you know it all fits together. Everybody's performances are top notch. We are really bringing our best out, forcing ourselves to make personal best choices, what's best for the music. I'm really excited to hear what people think." Singer Joseph Williams adds, "We are talking about a band where everybody is a writer, and everybody is a lead singer, and everybody is a player. All involved brought this trio to the table where it could just live on its own."Founding bassist David Hungate returns to the fold, about whom Luke simply offers, "No one plays like David Hungate." Drums were performed by Keith Carlock who's commitments to Steely Dan prohibit him from participating in the 2015 World Tour. Shannon Forest will be behind the kit, who was a part of the band's 2014 North American run. Luke offers, "Shannon is a world class drummer and we are honored to have him back with us."The sessions were co-produced by CJ Vanston, who Paich looks upon as, "everything a producer is supposed to be and more - a musicians producer." Vanston states, "There have never been better musicians on the planet, especially in a band together. This is an amazing record and I am completely thrilled to be a part of it. This is a dream job for me." Porcaro offers an additional thought stating, "I think the band is hit upon a very healthy creative tension for this project. I'm very excited about it." For Williams he reflects, "Just imagine being able to stand on stage in front of enormous crowd of people, and you are playing great music with the best musicians in the world, and you look around, and they are some of your best friends in the world. It's the best feeling any person could have." For Porcaro he shares, "It is kind of hard to find words of what it means to have a smile on your face to go to work every day and we have the fans to thank for that - so thank you."The band will hit the ground running with an extensive European headline arena tour with appearances at key festivals. The itinerary begins in Glasgow on May 21, and takes Toto through the UK, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Italy, and Belgium. Ticket sales came out of the box with strength, with some appearances selling out within days of on-sale. A North American tour will follow in the summer of 2015. The band is also in the planning stages for their return to Asia later this year. The last couple of years have been active, with a seven show sold-out tour of Asia that took them through Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo, Sendai and Sapporo in April, 2014. Also that month, the 35th Anniversary Tour - Live In Poland title was released, debuting at #1 in territories across the globe. Last August and September, the band hit the road travelling across North America as co-headliners with Michael McDonald, which when it was all said and done was their most comprehensive tour on the continent in years.Historically, few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members’ imprint can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with 225 Grammy nominations. TOTO sold 35 million albums, and today continue to be a worldwide arena draw staging standing room only events across the globe. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles, and 35 plus years in to a career enjoy a multi-generational fan base. It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world's population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO.

Album:

TOTO's debut album was one of the surprise events in the music business at the end of the seventies. It was rammed to the rafters with methodically crafted tracks, and produced two bonafide hit singles; ‘I’ll Supply The Love’ and ‘Hold The Line’. It was these two songs that reshaped the sound of melodic rock, giving rise to the style that forever onwards became known as AOR. Certified double platinum, the future for Toto looked assured or so they thought. When they returned with their second album "Hydra", their fans and critics were confronted with a work that although immediately recognisable, was considerably more advanced and complex.Instead of serving up another dish of stylistic melodic rock, they reached deep inside and committed to elaborate compositions and intricate arrangements. In many respects the approach could be traced directly back to the band’s progressive rock leanings; something that their musical ability and dexterity had always hinted at. Given the success of their first self titled debut album it would be difficult to surpass it, but Toto did just that with "Hydra".The band went for an edgier sound instead of the stylistic pop rock sound that was their first album. It is a record that combines all the positive aspects of a band that not only wrote great songs but also presented them in a format that wasn’t clichéd or pedestrian. The title track, for instance, is a seven minute plus anthem that has become a career cornerstone showcasing one of best Steve Lukather's playing ever and some exceptional keyboard work by both Steve Porcaro and David Paich, whilst shorter, sharper tracks such as "White Sister" (featuring infernal solos by Lukather) and "All Us Boys" reinforced the rocking AOR backbone in spectacular form. The musicianship and production are first rate and this is an album that you can listen to, forget and go back and it still sounds fresh. "Hydra" was their most consistent, elaborated album from song to song but probably the least appreciated.Actually "Hydra" is arguably Toto’s finest hour as musicians; Lukather is on fire and his guitar playing is mind blowing. Jeff Porcaro drumming is phenomenal. David Paich and Steve Porcaro are wizards on the keyboards. David Hungate lays down a wicked bass, and Bobby Kimball sounds stronger, visceral at places."Hydra" rocks harder than most other Toto CD's, adding progressive elements to their melodic recipe and proving that these incredible musicians are able to play anything, and always in a victorious form. The Rock Candy job wisely respect the original frequencies resulting in a remaster that sounds with the original organic vinyl LP output but with a more potent gain and definition.

Album:

Here’s the requested Remastered & Reloaded Rock Candy Records version of TOTO‘s third album “Turn Back“. You could say that “Turn Back” is the ‘lost’ Toto album. Whilst their debut record achieved double platinum sales figures producing two global hit singles, and it’s follow up ‘Hydra’ was eventually acknowledged as a neo progressive rock triumph, “Turn Back” flew beneath the radar and barely caused a blip on the charts before disappearing from sight. The fact that their follow up album ‘Toto IV’ has won an unprecedented seven Grammys and contained three top 10 hit singles only seems to emphasise the point. But although it is the least well known early era Toto album, to die-hard fans of the band it is regarded as one of their creative highpoints. Since its release more than thirty years ago, “Turn Back” has become somewhat a fan favorite, perhaps due its lack of success and big hits make the album arguably more enjoyable to listen to than any other Toto album.Apart from that, and being unbiased, “Turn Back” includes some awesome, terrific songs.“Turn Back” found Toto taking a far more aggressive approach, dialling down the keyboards and upping the guitar quota by a considerable margin. This was, for all intents and purposes, an arena rock album designed to stave off their detractors and emphasise that they could hold their own against meatier acts such as Foreigner and Boston.Much of this was due to the enlistment of renowned British co-producer Geoff Workman who provided a more raw, heavy, glossy but thick sound. The three opening tracks, “Gift With A Golden Gun”, “English Eyes” and “Live For Today” usher in the album with solid dose of hook-filled hard rock with Steve Lukather’s biting guitar work and the late Jeff Porcaro’s solid forceful drumming. The melodic hard rock element is also apparent in fast-paced shuffle of “Goodbye Elenore” which features a strong resemblance to bands like Queen or Journey. There is also a small progressive-rock touch heard in the album’s title track with its strong doses of keyboards and guitar textures.Balancing out the album are three ballads: the calm “A Million Miles Away” which explodes during the chorus with Bobby Kimball’s emotional soaring vocals, “I Think I Could Stand You Forever” has a harder edge to it and once again comes across with musical references to Queen and Journey.“If It’s the Last Night” is a Steve Lukather sung acoustic ballad with a slight REO Speedwagon vibe to it. This is also the album’s powerful closing track.I am a big Toto fan, and all their albums are quite different amongst them. “Turn Back” is their rockier, the less commercial and the more ‘raw’, and I love it.To my ears, there’s always has been a problem with the production of “Turn Back”. I mean, I really like Geoff Workman’s production, but all the copies I have listened (LP, cassette, CD) suffer from some kind of ‘attenuate brightness’ and tape hiss.Well, Rock Candy has fixed that sensation. This is one of the best remasters done by the British company, and definitely the best sounding Toto’s “Turn Back” edition ever.

Line Up:

Bobby Kimball: lead and backing vocals
Steve Lukather: guitars, lead and backing vocals
David Paich: keyboards, backing vocals
Steve Porcaro: keyboards, electronics, backing vocals
David Hungate: bass, acoustic guitar on 6
Jeff Porcaro: drums, percussion

Tracklist:

01. Gift With A Golden Gun 4:00
02. English Eyes 6:04
03. Live For Today 4:00
04. A Million Miles Away 4:33
05. Goodbye Elenore 4:52
06. I Think I Could Stand You Forever 5:19
07. Turn Back 3:56
08. If It's The Last Night 4:31

Album:

Rock Candy Records did a truly excellent ‘Remastered & ReloadeD‘ reissue campaign of the catalogue from one of the pillar AOR acts of all time; TOTO.This is the band’s indispensable debut “Toto” – including the immortal song “Hold The Line” – plus a bonus track.Toto’s debut signalled a significant tipping point in the development of Rock. Similar sounding acts such as Foreigner and Journey sowed the seeds of Melodic Rock AOR but none at that point had truly crafted the definitive role model.Toto took basic elements and turned them into pure gold by crafting a sound that was precise, cultivated and pretty much flawless, blending memorable songs with state of the art production and melodies that would propel their songs onto the airwaves from Los Angeles to London and all points in between.Formed by the cream of the L.A. session circuit, the band’s credential were further enhanced by keyboard player and composer David Paich, a man who had carved a successful songwriting reputation with artists such as Boz Scaggs. Joining him was guitar prodigy Steve Lukather, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball, bassist David Hungate, and two brothers in keyboardist Steve and drummer Jeff Porcaro; all men with their eyes on the prize and talent to burn. The album produced two massive worldwide hit singles: “Hold The Line” and “I’ll Supply The Love”, securing them a top ten album in the Billboard Charts, double Platinum certification and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.Elsewhere the tracks range from the soulful pop of “Georgy Porgy” with some smooth jazzy Westcoast feel, to the raging, almost malevolent hard rock of “Girl Goodbye”.I really like this Rock Candy fresh remaster, because in many ways respect the original warm sound of the original vinyl LP. The difference it’s in the clarity obtained cleaning the hiss, and some gain increase. And you have the groovy ‘Extended Remix’ of “Georgy Porgy” (also known as ‘Long Version’) as bonus track.

Line Up:

Bobby Kimball: lead and backing vocals
Steve Lukather: guitars, lead and backing vocals
David Paich: keyboards, lead and backing vocals
Steve Porcaro: keyboards, lead vocals
David Hungate: bass
Jeff Porcaro: drums, percussion

Additional musicians:

Lenny Castro: percussion
Jim Horn: saxophone, wind instruments
Chuck Findley: horns
Roger Linn: synthesizers
Marty Paich, Sid Sharp: string arrangements
Cheryl Lynn: backing vocals on “Georgy Porgy”

Album:

Falling in Between is the twelfth studio album (though counted as the 13th album overall — see Toto XIV) by American rock band, Toto. The album was released in February 2006 on the Italian label Frontiers Records, the band supporting the album with a world tour. It was the band's first studio release since Through the Looking Glass in 2002, the last one with lead vocalist Bobby Kimball and the only one with keyboardist/vocalist Greg Phillinganes. Phillinganes originally began playing with Toto as a touring replacement for David Paich, who had retired from the road. Another Porcaro brother, Steve, continues to work in the studio with the band, though he also retired from touring following the Fahrenheit album in 1987. Similarly, Lenny Castro has never been a member of the group, but has consistently contributed to their recordings since their first album in 1978. This is also the band's last studio album to feature bassist Mike Porcaro and drummer Simon Phillips; Porcaro retired from touring in the following year due to an ALS and died in 2015 (though he would posthumously appear on the 2018 album Old Is New on select tracks). Phillips left the band in 2014 to focus on his solo career.Other guest artists appearing on the album include then-former lead vocalist Joseph Williams, saxophonist Tom Scott, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, Chicago trombonist James Pankow and former Chicago bassist and vocalist Jason Scheff. All tracks are written by David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Simon Phillips and Mike Porcaro except where noted.

Some of these feature the great, late Jeff Porcaro on drums.Into the vault Toto had the basic tracks taped back in the day, but the melodies, form and choruses weren’t finished. Hence the album’s title: “Old Is New”.

Album:

To most young people today, Toto are known almost exclusively for their hits from 1982, Africa and Rosanna. However, the band's journey to this arguable peak began far before this, originally emerging in 1977-78. This performance from Koseinenkin Kaikan, Shinjuku, Tokyo, March 12th 1980 therefore presents a highly rare opportunity to experience the band's evolution and growth: a growth which would soon result in the band boasting six Grammy wins, and a further four nominations. Soon after the release of their second album, Hydra, and on their first ever-international tour, Toto reveal a more matured, skillful, and funky side to their already expert reputation. Timeline proudly presents the entire original NHK radio broadcast of Toto live in Japan in 1980. Re-mastered original broadcast with background liners and rare archival photos.

Line Up:

Bobby Kimball - vocals
Steve Lukather - guitar, vocals

David Hungate - acoustic guitar, bass
Roger Linn - synthesizer
Jeff Porcaro - percussion, drums
