Bio:

The Riverdogs is a rock band, founded in Los Angeles in 1989.Following an introduction to guitarist Vivian Campbell, formerly of Sweet Savage, Dio, and Whitesnake, Campbell agreed to produce Riverdogs' first demo. Vivian was so impressed by their talent, he joined the band for their debut-album, released on Epic Records in 1990,winning a prestigious Edison Award in The Netherlands. Soon after, drummer Marc Danzeisen joined the band to complete the line-up. Though fans and critics gave the album a warm reception, lack of support from their record label eventually led the band members to go their own way, with Campbell settling into the Def Leppard lineup and Nick Brophy becoming a respected engineer and producer, working with artists Rolling Stones, Avril Levine, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Kip Moore. The band still gets together to play for fun and eventually record new songs.Nick Brophy played as a bass guitarist on Riverdogs and played as a guitarist on Absolutely Live and Bone, replacing Vivian Campbell as guitarist, and himself being replaced by Cary Beare on bass guitar.Vivian Campbell is now playing in Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy, and Riverdogs.Rob Lamothe was a guest lead vocalist on the song "The River" on former Badlands bass guitarist Greg Chaisson's solo album It's About Time. Marc Danzeisen also guested on several songs on It's About Time as a backing vocalist and percussionist.Rob Lamothe and Vivian Campbell have both had solo careers.Marc Danzeisen went on to play drums with Little Caesar in 1992 and then in 1994 he recorded and toured with Gilby Clarke from Guns and Roses Marc Danzeisen has become a leading studio drummer along with producing, and writing songs for commercials, .V. and Film.Keyboardist Kevin Gilbert played keyboards on the song "America" from Riverdogs.Allen DeSilva played drums on the song "America" from Riverdogs.Riverdogs (Rob Lamothe, Vivian Campbell, Nick Brophy & Marc Danzeisen) signed to MelodicRock Records for an album to be released in the first half of 2011. This studio features unreleased music from the "lost" 2003 sessions and possibly new songs. A week was spent in Los Angeles working up ideas, and re-mixing and adding new parts to the original songs.

Album:

Regarded by many as the best album ever recorded by talented guitarist Vivian Campbell, the self-titled debut by RIVERDOGS has been remastered by Rock Candy and released in a Special Deluxe Collector’s 2CD Edition, featuring no less than 11 bonus tracks on an extra CD.Following an introduction to guitarist Vivian Campbell - at the moment ex- DIO and Whitesnake - he agreed to produce Riverdogs' first demo. Vivian was so impressed by their talent, he joined the band for their debut-album, released on Epic Records in 1990. Soon after, drummer Marc Danzeisen joined the band to complete the line-up, but the drums on the record were done by excellent session cat Mike Baird.Riverdogs born in Los Angeles at a time when hair-metal was king, but were determined to avoid clichés, adopting a bluesy melodic rock style where restraint was central and excess frowned upon.Naturally Vivian Campbell played an influential part in fashioning the musical palate but both bassist Nick Brophy and vocalist Rob Lamothe also attracted immediate attention.Brophy is a great guitarist as well, so his bass playing is much more than just 'fills', it's complex and organic, sounding rock steady with excellent runs showcasing each song. A real 'bass guitar' work. And you have the soulful vocals of Rob Lamothe. He delivers as much grit, emotion and power into these songs as you would ever want. Put him up there with Lou Gramm, Kelly Keeling or Paul Rodgers. He was virtually unknown before the release of this album, and as good as the album is, the name Lamothe will still get you far more blank stares than smiles of recognition. Warm, commanding and instantly identifiable, Lamothe’s voice didn’t rely on meaningless bombast to get noticed.Tracks like "Baby Blue", "I Believe", "Whisper" and the awesome "Water From The Moon" are superb.Produced by Michael Frondelli (Kiss, Rolling Stones) and polished by Jeff Glixman (Gary Moore, Kansas) "Riverdogs" was greeted with universal acclaim but any hopes of hitting the big time were immediately extinguished when their label president was fired and a new regime installed showing zero excitement amongst the new team. It was a devastating blow and one that they never recovered from.Campbell joined Def Leppard, Rob Lamothe pursued a solo career, and Marc Danzeisen went on to play drums with Little Caesar and Gilby Clarke. Nick Brophy become a respected engineer and producer, working with artists like Rolling Stones, Avril Levine, Hootie and the Blowfish, etc.Anyway, Riverdogs still gets together to play for fun and eventually record new songs."Riverdogs" is one of the most overlooked records of all time, and a terrific piece of organic melodic rock. There's not a weak song on the disc and Vivian's guitar work is some of the best I've ever heard. The Rock Candy remaster is very clean with lovely warm dynamics. And we have a bonus CD featuring all the songs from the main album re-worked acoustically, recorded at different Radio Stations while promoting the album. As plus, there's the non-album track "Pennsylvania", previously unreleased.

Album:

The Riverdogs are back! Original members Rob Lamothe (vocals, guitars), Nick Brophy (bass, vocals) and Vivian Campbell (lead guitar), along with longtime drummer Marc Danzeisen, have reunited to record their fifth album, “California". Mixing the soulful vocals of Lamothe with the edgy guitarwork of Campbell and solid rhythmic lines from Brophy and Danzeisen, the album marks a definitive return to the sound of their critically acclaimed 1990 self-titled debut album. On the making of the album, lead guitarist Vivian Campbell says: "When my friends at Frontiers suggested a Riverdogs album in the spirit of the original debut record, I jumped at the chance to make it. In my opinion, 'Riverdogs' was a highlight of my career with some of my best guitar playing and definitely a record that flew under the radar. Having a clear direction of exactly what kind of record to make really helped the four of us create the music and there was an intense collective focus throughout the entire process that never wavered. I really think that we hit the target in creating a record that has all the hallmarks, the integrity and the emotional strength of the original debut. The fact that we've all remained such close friends throughout all the years only added to the joyous experience that was the making of this record."“Going in to this project, my goal was to enjoy the opportunity of making music with some of my best friends, to share this incredible experience with my family ... and to create something that Riverdogs fans will probably think is pretty bloody awesome. Big guitars! Beautiful melodies! Words about crazy, complicated, real stuff! I feel like Nick, Viv, Marc and I all brought our 'A-Games' to the writing and recording sessions. That's way more important than money and awards and fame to me”, adds vocalist and guitarist Rob Lamothe.Bassist Nick Brophy sums up the writing process for the album: “In the summer of 2016, I found myself in Los Angeles, reunited with 3 of my closest friends, about to begin a new Riverdogs album. Marc had arranged a rehearsal environment at a friend’s house which was to provide the creative atmosphere for writing new material. I stood there with bass in hand thinking 'OK, now what?' Little did I know that a few days later we would have six new Riverdogs songs and the album ‘California’ was born. The remaining six songs came, surprisingly, just as easily, a testament to the amazing talents of Vivian, Rob, Marc and the effortless way in which we work as a group. Our clear goal for this album was to remain true to the original Riverdogs sound and provide fans with a new set of songs which carry on the legacy of a truly remarkable band.”Riverdogs formed in Los Angeles at the end of the 80s, when flashy, glitzy hard rock ruled the day, but they were determined to avoid clichés and adopted an original sounding blues rock style. Vivian Campbell of Sweet Savage, Ronnie James Dio and Whitesnake / David Coverdale fame at the time (soon to join and become a longstanding member of Def Leppard and later, founding member of Last In Line as well) was initially brought on board to produce the band's first demo, but was so impressed with the band that he actually became a member and played on the debut album. Soon after the release, Marc Danzeisen joined Rob, Nick and Vivian to complete the line-up.Though fans and critics gave the album a warm reception and high regard, the unfortunate and age old story of change of personnel at their record label came about and eventually led the band members to go their own ways, with Campbell settling into the Def Leppard line-up and Nick Brophy becoming a respected engineer and producer. Riverdogs, with a reformed line-up, released two more records in 1993, "Bone" and "Absolutely Live", before going on an extended hiatus. They reconvened, with the original line-up, in 2003 to record new material and play a few reunion shows. Those new songs were recorded as demos, but only completed in the studio in 2011 when their last album, “World Gone Mad” was released. Now, six years after their last studio album, Riverdogs have crafted “California”, a record that truly recreates the magical sounds of their early days and that will surely be welcomed with open arms by fans both old and new!

Album:

Some time ago we featured here RIVERDOGS‘s self-titled album in its 2-CD remastered reissue by Rock Candy. Now one of you requested the own remaster by Bad Reputation Records specialists. Released on a double package as well, Bad Reputation’s remastering job is quite different, less ‘louder’ and more ‘vinyl LP’ focused. While both remastered reissues are very good, I prefer this one, overall more ‘natural’ to my ears.Regarded by many as the best album ever recorded by talented guitarist Vivian Campbell, the self-titled debut by Riverdogs mix like few melodic rock waves with a classic rock feel.Following an introduction to guitarist Vivian Campbell – at the moment ex- DIO and Whitesnake – he agreed to produce Riverdogs’ first demo. Vivian was so impressed by their talent, he joined the band for their debut-album, released on Epic Records in 1990.Soon after, drummer Marc Danzeisen joined the band to complete the line-up, but the drums on the record were done by excellent session cat Mike Baird.Riverdogs born in Los Angeles at a time when hair-metal was king, but were determined to avoid clichés, adopting a bluesy melodic rock style where restraint was central and excess frowned upon.Naturally Vivian Campbell played an influential part in fashioning the musical palate but both bassist Nick Brophy and vocalist Rob Lamothe also attracted immediate attention.Brophy is a great guitarist as well, so his bass playing is much more than just ‘fills’, it’s complex and organic, sounding rock steady with excellent runs showcasing each song. There’s not a weak song on the disc and Vivian’s guitar work is some of the best I’ve ever heard from his gifted fingers. As said, it’s a matter of taste, but I prefer this Bad Reputation remaster (quite expensive right now) over the Rock Candy. And we have the bonus CD ‘On Air’ as well featuring all the songs from the main album acoustically re-worked , recorded at different Radio Stations while promoting the album plus the non album track ‘Pennsylvania’ (previously unreleased), and adding the studio version of ‘Baby Blue’ starting the CD, as happened on the 1990-91 original edition.
