Bio:

XYZ was originally created in Lyon (France) where Patt Fontaine and Terry Ilous were born and grew up. Then they moved to Los Angeles, and began a musical career in 1986. XYZ started off as the unofficial house band of "The Whisky A Go Go" nightclub in Los Angeles. The original members were Terry Ilous (vocals), Bobby Pieper (guitars), Patt Fontaine (bass) and Joey Pafumi (drums). A tour of the US with Enuff Z'Nuff and Alice Cooper followed the success of their 1989 Enigma released debut album, and they were signed by major label Capitol for their second. The band played clubs throughout the mid 1980s and first got a record deal in 1989 with Don Dokken as their producer. Terry Ilous's vocal style on the band's first album was very similar to Dokken's. Ilous and Fontaine then recruited Mark Diglio (guitars) and Paul Monroe (drums) to replace the departing Pieper and Pafumi, to record a debut album, produced by Don Dokken. The album was released in 1989 and contained the hits "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You". Videos for both songs received reasonable airplay; however, the album itself was not an overall success, managing to reach only No. 99 on the Billboard charts. A third single from the album, "Maggy" was used in the 1990 Dolph Lundgren movie I Come in Peace. The next album, Hungry, released in 1991, had even less commercial success—not charting at all. Diglio and Monroe left the band and were replaced by Tony Burnett and Joey Shapiro, respectively. After the next tour was finished, band members went separate ways once again. They reunited in 2002 with the lineup of Ilous, Fontaine, Tony Marcus, and Shapiro, and still perform to the present day.XYZ is gaining success again in USA and Europe doing several festivals and shows. In addition to being lead vocals for XYZ, Terry Ilous is also currently doing vocals for Great White, replacing Jack Russell.Terry was recently interviewed by Argentinean rock journalist Lucas H. Gordon, where the singer talked about a recent charity event called '80's Rockers for Japan' organized by Ilous to raise money for the Red Cross from Japan, to help victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. In the event many hard rock celebrities appeared like ex-Toto Bobby Kimball, Paul Shortino, Rudy Sarzo, Michael T. Ross, John Payne, Carmine Appice, Vinny Appice, Lorraine Lewis and others.XYZ performed at Rocklahoma Festival in 2008, the M3 Rock Festival, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD, and Firefest, Rock City, Nottingham, UK in 2012.Drummer Joey Shapiro recently purchased drumstick and guitar pick grip company Gorilla Snot. While Terry Ilous is still the frontman for XYZ, he is also current lead singer for 80's band Great White as of 2010.Paul Monroe was a contestant with his Daughter on the 10/19/2016 episode of "That Awkward Game Show" on Spike TV.

Album:

Hungry is the second studio album recorded by the metal band XYZ. The album was released on September 3, 1991. A music video was created for the song "Face Down in the Gutter," but issues arose concerning airtime on MTV (shown on Headbangers Ball) due to the clothing of the women pictured."Every night is Saturday night for us, and hungary is what we are. It's one guitar, one voice, drums, bass, skin, bones, rock n'roll," says XYZ bassist Patt Fontaine, referring to the band's second LP offering. Big words indeed from a band whose previous main claims to fame have been a vocalist often compared to DON DOKKEN, who, co-incidentally, produced their self-titled 1989 debut! Anyway, let's have a listen and see if they can produce the goods this time...Hungry has been produced by George Tutko, and contains eleven original tracks penned by the band, and a cover of FREE's Fire And Water. Side one kicks off with Face Down In The Gutter, built around a very George Lynch-ish riff and inspired by the band's drummer, Paul Monroe, who ended up in a horizontal position at a party, having indulged himself just a little too much at the bar!!!This song sets the mood and feel for the remainder of the album; a big bass, guitar and drums sound with catchy riffs, and sing-a-long choruses. It's rock n' roll party time, and XYZ are here for the duration!Throughout the album guitarist Marc Diglio leads the band with an impressive display of both heavy riff work, and intense, screeching solos; and his efforts on Fire And Water and When The Night Comes Down are particularly outstanding, as they show he is capable of speed, technique, and control at the same time. The band have rearranged the FREE classic to suit their own style, but it actually works quite well, and can stand proudly as a tribute to the original. When The Night Comes Down sounds like it could be an out-take from a DOKKEN album session just going by the title alone, and, if you didn't know any better, you'd swear it was Don, George, and the boys in happier, pre-split days!In fact that's the only criticism of this album that springs to mind; there's nothing that makes it uniquely XYZ. The songs are strong; the musicianship's excellent; and the production brings out the best in the band, but it's not enough. If XYZ want to find themselves up there with the big guns they're going to have to do something just a little bit different, a little bit more XYZ. Maybe next time?

Album:

XYZ is the 1989 self-titled debut album released by the mid-1980s American glam metal band XYZ. There were two hits off the album; "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You". The album was a moderate success, charting at No. 99 on the Billboard 200. There were two music videos made for the songs "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You" which both aired on MTV between 1989 and 1990.All songs are written by Terry Ilous, Marc Richard Diglio, Patrick Fontaine except noted.By the time XYZ’s debut album was released, Dokken had already split due to the turbulent relationship between Don Dokken and George Lynch. Before Don wrapped things up with his first solo album “Up from the Ashes” (1990), he jumped in as the skillful producer of the French-American band, XYZ’s coming-out party. Unfortunately, the household name Don Dokken printed on the back of the album under “produced by” didn’t really help that much. XYZ’s debut album barely got into the Billboard charts, under #99.Despite the moderate success, three singles and two music videos were released. The MVs for “Inside Out” and “What Keeps Me Loving You” got a little bit of that MTV spotlight. The third single, “Maggy” didn’t get a MV, however found its way to the big screen, as a soundtrack piece for the 1990 Dolph Lundgren movie, “Come in Peace”.xyzAll in all, “XYZ” is an album that can easily blow out any other hard rock album of that era, even the multi-platinum ones. It’s such a shame when talent remains behind the shadows due to unreasonable circumstances. The four guys – Terry Ilous (vocals), Marc Richard Diglio (guitar), Paul Monroe (drums) and Patrick Fontaine (bass) crafted a steady piece of rock music that is suitable for any music-fanatic out there who is ready to have a great time! Don Dokken’s producer touch could easily be felt as we proceed from one song to another. Yes, the album does sound like a little bit like Dokken, but the sound is rougher, edgier and possesses that young and hungry spirit.Where do I even begin? “Inside Out” is a satisfying rock masterpiece which can only be enjoyed if played as loud as possible. Glorious guitar work and don’t even get me started on the vocals – Terry is simply fantastic! “What Keeps Me Loving You” is the turning point – a power ballad ready to knock your socks off with its soul-grabbing melody and tender lyrics! “Take What You Can” impresses with its mind-blowing, thunderous guitar intro, which introduces us to a world, dominated by Terry Ilous’ violent screams. “Follow the Night” is yet another praiseworthy ballad I grew an attachment to. The second half of the album is as intriguing as the first – “Come On N’ Love Me”, “Souvenirs” and “After the Rain” are all offering one memorable sonic experience! The strong power ballad presence on the album makes things so interesting for me!

Album:

XYZ second release "Hungry" remastered by Axe Killer / Bad Reputation Records including a bonus track. While this strong band fronted by vocalist Terry Ilous wasn't considered by rock critics as a top act from the late Eighties / early Nineties US Hard Rock scene, most major, platinum-seller bands and musicians of the genre mentioned XYZ as personal favorites.Aiming to rock harder than on their debut album but still maintaining a polished sound, for second record "Hungry" XYZ called guru Neil Kernon (Dokken, Judas Priest) to co-produce together with George Tutko (Lita Ford, Eric Martin). This association resulted in a more straightforward, no-frills bluesy hard rock album plenty of energy, great vocals and sizzling guitar work. This quite hard to find, now out of print (135 Euros) remastered reissue by Axe Killer / Bad Reputation Records delivers a noticeable improvement in sound and balance than the original release, including the bonus track "Two Wrongs Can Make A Right".To make it more complete, we have added the Japanese edition bonus track "Highlife". Killer rocking stuff.Note: this is not the version floating the net, it's a fresh accurate rip from original CD.The album was released on September 3, 1991. A music video was created for the song "Face Down in the Gutter," but issues arose concerning airtime on MTV (shown on Headbangers Ball) due to the clothing of the women pictured."Every night is Saturday night for us, and hungary is what we are.

Album:

XYZ is back after a twelve year hiatus. Having enjoyed the band's self titled debut album and the follow up, Hungry, I was eager to hear Letter To God. I've given this album several listens before arriving at a final opinion since it is quite different from their older material. I feel that this album will split fans into two groups: those who feel that the band has strayed too far from their trademark sound and those who enjoy the new Zeppelin-esque sound. The best way to sum this album up in a nutshell would be to call it a cross between Don Dokken solo material and Led Zeppelin. As fans of the band know, the band's debut album was produced by Don Dokken, and therefore has a very heavy Dokken influence. Vocalist Terry Ilous even sounded very much like Don Dokken on that album. Fast forward to 2003… The band's sound is slower, and nowhere near the LA metal of the previous two releases. As I said, the Led Zeppelin influence cannot be denied. In fact, Touch The Sky sounds like a direct Zeppelin knock off. There are numerous acoustic passages throughout the album which aide greatly to the whole retro-Zeppelin rock atmosphere. Terry Ilous even sounds a lot more like Robert Plant and less like Don Dokken on this album. Jeff Northrup's guitar work blazes throughout this album with quality solos and heavy riffs. However, I do wish the band could have cranked it up more throughout the album rather than plod along in the slow to mid tempo range the entire duration. Just when you get the feeling that a big, energetic crescendo is lurking ahead, the tempo does not change. Suffice it to say that Northrup would have shined even more with only a few more up tempo opportunities.Musically speaking, XYZ puts on a very tight performance for this album. The production is exceptionally crisp, with each component of the sound in perfect balance. As I said, Ilous and Northup shine, but the rhythm section is also very bold. Without a doubt, these guys know how to play their instruments. Although I am pleased with the individual performances of the band members, something is missing. The songs themselves just are not interesting or exciting enough to keep me coming back for more. The melodies are not very strong, and only a couple of chorus lines from the entire album can be remembered when the album is done playing. Hence, the album as a whole is not very memorable, especially when factoring in the lethargic pace of the album. For some reason, the band decided to include two re-recorded hits from their past. Inside Out has been given the 70's retro treatment, and What Keeps Me Loving You has been given a more stripped back, emotional delivery. Neither one of the two tracks surpasses or even equals the original version. When it's all said and done, I feel that die hard XYZ fans and fans of Led Zeppelin style hard rock will enjoy this album the most. All others, especially causal fans of the bands first two album will want to take a more cautious approach to this album. Despite the impressive individual performances on this album, I just don't find enough stand out moments to prevent this CD from becoming buried in my CD cabinet one month from now.

Album:

This is the second set of demos to surface from XYZ this year, and the better of the two. Forbidden Demos 1985/1991 contains five of the songs from the original line-up (all 12 songs from these recordings can be found on Rainy Days) and unreleased or slightly different recordings. Many of the popular tunes from the self-titled debut are here like “Inside Out”, “Follow The Night”, “After The Rain” and “Souvenirs”, and most of them stay pretty true to the songs we all know. “Inside Out” however has a noticeably different chorus on this demo (it’s a good thing they changed for the debut) and the Bobby Pieper version of “Souvenirs” is rougher around the edges then the slick power ballad that came later. The best part of this album is some of the previously unreleased tracks, tracks so good that it boggles the mind why they wouldn’t have been recorded for either XYZ or Hungry. “High Life”, which ended up being a Japanese Hungry bonus track, is an aggressive rocker with a powerful chorus and the live “You Got Me Wrong” is one of XYZ‘s heavier numbers with its galloping guitar riff. “Made For Love” is a catchy number but is overrun with corny 80’s keyboards, I’d like to see this tune updated.Actually several of the demos from the original band have an abundance of keyboards/piano which makes for some emotional sounding music, like that on “Rainy Days” and “Never Too Late”. Overall this is a great collection that takes you through XYZ‘s formative years, and who knew they had so many cool songs in the vaults.
