Bio:

Shotgun Messiah were a glam metal band originally from Sweden; they crossed over to industrial rock music during the early 1990s. In 2012, Zinny J. Zan and Stixx reunited as Shotgun to celebrate Shotgun Messiah's legacy.Sweden Rock Magazine has named Shotgun Messiah #38 on their "The Best Rock Bands Of Sweden Ever" list. The band originally went under the name "Kingpin" while in Sweden, recording the album Welcome To Bop City; the line-up featured Zinny J. Zan (vocals), Tim Skold (going by "Tim Tim") (bass), Harry K. Cody (guitar) and Pekka "Stixx Galore" (later simply "Stixx") Ollinen (drums). This would become the original line-up of Shotgun Messiah as the band changed their name and relocated to Hollywood, California. The album they released under the "Kingpin" name was re-recorded and released as Shotgun Messiah's self-titled debut album, Shotgun Messiah. The style of this album was glam metal typical of early 1980s American bands such as Mötley Crüe and Ratt.Frontman Zinny J. Zan departed the band in 1990 leaving Tim Skold to take over vocal duties; Shotgun Messiah drafted in American bassist, Bobby Lycon, to fill Skold's former position. In 1991, the band's follow up album Second Coming was released, spawning their most famous hit "Heartbreak Blvd". Stylistically, due to Skold's less conventional singing style, this era saw the band playing sleaze glam-styled hard rock, closer to Guns N' Roses and Faster Pussycat than their previous effort.A punk rock influence is also notable during this period. The band released I Want More, an EP featuring cover versions of songs by the Ramones, The Stooges and the New York Dolls; they were also known to cover the Sex Pistols live.1993 was the final year for the band; Harry K. Cody and Tim Skold were left as the only members of Shotgun Messiah and created what would be the last Shotgun Messiah album Violent New Breed. This album is significantly different from the previous efforts as it focused heavily on industrial rock stylings, bringing in live players for the "Violent New Breed" tour. Soon after the tour, the band split permanently citing artistic differences as the reason. After Shotgun Messiah, Tim Skold's acitivies have been the most notable. Building on the industrial rock of the band's last album, Violent New Breed, he released a solo album entitled Skold; this was followed by joining bands such as KMFDM, MDFMK and The Newlydeads. From 2002 to 2008, Skold joined the band Marilyn Manson creating two albums; he also replaced Twiggy Ramirez as the tour bassist and later became the tour guitarist. His latest release is a collaboration with KMFDM entitled Skold vs. KMFDM. Tim Skold stated in an interview that a Shotgun Messiah reunion is "very, very unlikely to happen."Harry Cody went on to form the band Coma with Saigon Kick singer Matt Kramer but the project was short-lived. In 1996, he teamed up with Rhino Bucket singer Georg Dolvio to make Das Cabal but the band only made it as far as to record a 3-track demo only to split up later because, according to Dolvio in an interview, Cody didn't want to play live. Cody later put together a 6-track demo called Stark and tried submitting it to various record labels but to little results. Recently, Cody has been collaborating with Tom Waits and appearing on his most recent albums Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards and Real Gone performing guitar and banjo.Zinny J. Zan has released a solo album and two albums with his new band "Zan Clan".Zinny J. Zan and Stixx reunited in 2012 referring to themselves as Shotgun to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Welcome to Bop City, the original debut album from the bands first incarnation as Kingpin before changing their name to Shotgun Messiah. They have also assembled Rob Marcello and Chris Laney to the line-up. Shotgun Line-up Zinny J. Zan - Vocals Rob Marcello - Guitar backing vocals Chris Laney - Bass backing vocals Stixx - Drums backing vocals.

Album:

Divebomb Records has reissued & remastered for the first time two SHOTGUN MESSIAH essential albums. Let's see now their second, the Melodic Hard Rock masterpiece "Second Coming".Two years after the release of the first album, vocalist Zinny J. Zan abruptly announced that he was quitting the band and heading back to Sweden.Without missing a beat, bassist Tim Skold promptly stepped up to take over the frontman position, and Shotgun Messiah came back with a vengeance on album number two: 'Second Coming'.If the Rock Gods were fair, then "Second Coming" would've gone multi-platinum.The thirteen songs on this second Shotgun Messiah are superb, having a more US hard rock bite that completely blow away everything on the sleazier first album. But what makes this that good is the fact it mixes like few albums of the era melodic hard rock, glam, US hard rock and hair metal with a sense of melody and catchiness that amaze.Nowadays, Scandinavian melodic hard rock rule, but twenty-five years ago they were a rarity on heard in Europe. Well, Shotgun Messiah blended the US sound with the unique Swedish touch and the results were stupendous. The songwriting, the performances, the arrangements are simply great... and production ... "Second Coming" is one of the best produced / mastered albums from the genre. The shiny, glossy sound obtained by Tim Skold (now handling lead vocals), guitarist Harry Cody and Pat Regan (Kiss, David Glen Eisley, Graham Bonnet) is top notch.Tim Skold proved to be a formidable frontman in his own right, with a grittier but melodious vocal style which was tougher and less screechy/aggravating than Zinny had been at times.Harry Cody should be one of the most underrated six-string heros of the genre, as his licks & solos are good as - or better - than most of his contemporaries that enjoyed way more success than him. He should be, without a doubt, herald in the same category as Guitar Gods like George Lynch, Vivian Campbell, Nuno Bettencourt, etc.Bold statement I know, but just listen to Cody shred on this CD and you will agree."Second Coming" was aimed directly at fans of harder-edged hair metal bands like Skid Row (who were flying high with their crunchy Slave to the Grind album at the time). The ultra-catchy "Heartbreak Boulevard" got its fair share of MTV play and would become Shotgun Messiah's signature track, and the band also cut a video for the semi-acoustic "Living WIthout You", a bitter, sarcastic 'breakup song' in which Skold essentially tells the object of his affections "if you don't want to be with me... fine, then f@ck off."But there's more, this album is full of gems; the kickin' "Red Hot", the Californian Melodic Hard Rock bliss of "Nobody's Home" and "Free", the anthemic "I Want More", the atmospheric mid-tempo "Ride The Storm", or the razor "Can't Fool Me".Shotgun Messiah ST and this "Second Coming" are essential albums to understand the evolution of '80s hard rock / glam / sleaze in years to come. These records influenced tons of bands (Crashdiet would not have existed without Shotgun Messiah), and defined a particular sound in the L.A. scene. Both CD's have been out of print since its original editions, nor available anywhere for digital purchase. So hands down to Divebomb Records for these wonderful reissues. The original tapes of "Second Coming" were remastered by Jamie King at The Basement Studios, and this reissue feature expanded liner notes, including essays on Shotgun Messiah’s journey from Scandinavian rising stars to Sunset Strip heroes.I have both albums in its original editions (a treasure) and this Remastered Reissues have improved the original sound updated to modern times 2015. "Second Coming" really sounds fantastic.

Album:

Eighties hard rock fans know the name SHOTGUN MESSIAH very well. The Swedish combo delivered two awesome albums of hook-filled sleaze ’n’ roll with 1989’s delf-titled Shotgun Messiah and 1991’s Second Coming.Divebomb Records is the label that finally did it: they are presenting Deluxe Remastered reissues of both albums. The original tapes have been remastered by Jamie King at The Basement Studios, and feature expanded liner notes, including essays on Shotgun Messiah’s journey from Scandinavian rising stars to Sunset Strip heroes. If that weren’t already enough, the reissues also include newly unearthed photos, plus archival features from Kerrang! and Metal Forces magazines.Shotgun Messiah may never have become a household name, but they garnered a 'cult' audience (count me in) and copies of their long-out-of-print CDs have become hard-to-find, often-pricey collectibles on the secondary market over the years. These reissues mark the first time both Shotgun Messiah and Second Coming have been available at music retailers since the ‘90s. And of course remastered for the first time.SHOTGUN MESSIAH's self-titled debut is a blast. This is what I call a badass rockin' band. The band originally formed in Sweden in 1985 as 'Kingpin' - an outrageously over-the-top glam-to-the-max act whose neon-colored stage costumes (and unintentionally hilarious band photos) completely overshadowed the music on their debut album, Welcome to Bop City - which was released on a tiny Swedish label in 1988.The album was mostly ignored in their homeland, where clean-cut melodic rock acts like Europe were ruling the roost... so Kingpin decided to head to America and try their sleazy luck in Los Angeles - the Glam Metal capital of the world at the time. After a trans-Atlantic flight, a name change (there was already a band using the Kingpin name in L.A.) and a much-needed image makeover - more black leather and denim, way less neon - the newly christened Shotgun Messiah signed a deal with Relativity Records, a well established indie label signed to its Combat Records imprint.Welcome to Bop City was remixed, repackaged, and re-released worldwide as Shotgun Messiah's self-titled debut album in 1989."Shotgun Messiah" is sleaze glam hard rock, there’s no question of that. But amongst the screeches and tired entendres, there are glimpses of other influences.Released in 1989, it starts off with the very Motley Crue-esque “Bop City,” which has guitars so hooky as to differentiate them from all the other bands of the era.And this is the Ace of Spades of Shotgun Messiah: guitarist Harry Cody. The guy delivered a terrific set of riffs, licks and solos with a killerrrr sound that even put George Lynch into shame.“Don’ Care About Nothin’” is a similar follow-up, but “Shout It Out” is the first song where there’s something a little different going on than the usual Californian hard rock. With rapid-fire lyrics and hoodrat attitude, the song is broken,body-moving, and catchy.“Squeazin’ Teasin” comes next, and on this track is where you can really see Zinny J. Zan’s vocal range - because he does have a vocal range, and is able to move Faster Pussycat screeches to a lower Cult-growl.On “Dirt Talk,” for example, again sounds like a completely different singer from the rest of the album. Now we edge into L.A. Guns territory.“Nowhere Fast” is a personal favorite. A kick ass hair metal sleazy stomper with a razor riff, swirling lead guitar and a 'monsta', simple but tremendously effective chorus.Shotgun Messiah is, basically a best of the ‘80s Los Angeles hair metal scene as imagined by a band 6000 miles away in Scandinavia. The album ends with “I’m Your Love” and “Nervous.” While the former has a nastier edge, complete with a Marq Torien whine (that is, best of ‘80s LA hair metal), the latter is what a Runaways/Scorpions lovechild would sound like. Angry punky kid chorus chants with a soulful bridge. Probably wouldn’t be the most attractive child (that’s what we’d call 'a face made for radio'), but a good listen at any rate.In fact, that’s Shotgun Messiah in a nutshell; not so easy on the eyes, but great personalities all around!Shotgun Messiah debut wasn't a smash in the U.S., but it performed respectably enough thanks to a pair of flashy music videos for "Don't Care 'Bout Nothin'" and "Shout It Out," which got play on MTV's 'Headbanger's Ball' and helped the album achieve a peak position of #99 on the Billboard charts. However, before they could celebrate their newfound success, vocalist Zinny J. Zan abruptly announced that he was quitting the band and heading back to Sweden.Without missing a beat, bassist Tim Skold promptly stepped up to take over the frontman position, and Shotgun Messiah came back with a vengeance on album number two: the Hard Rock masterpiece 1991's 'Second Coming'."Shotgun Messiah" (and 'Second Coming' to be featured here soon) are essential albums to understand the evolution of '80s hard rock / glam / sleaze in years to come. Both albums influenced tons of bands (Crashdiet would not have existed without Shotgun Messiah), and defined a particular sound in the L.A. scene.I have both albums in its original editions (a treasure) and this Remastered Reissues have improved the original sound updated to modern times 2015.

Album:

When you check out a band you’ve seen on Sleaze Roxx you can be sure of two things; first that it’s rock and second that it’s either hard rock, sleaze rock or hair metal – anyway you call it. Now we all know that the majority of the best bands from this genre started somewhere between the mid 80’s and early 90’s, and by the mid 90’s almost all were extinct – eradicated by the ever-changing trends in music. The ones that did survive quickly discovered the ‘in’ music tastes. Several of them decided to stick to their guns, but majority went on with a radical change of sound. Superstars like Warrant, Motley Crue and Skid Row released albums that sounded totally different than their earlier releases, trying to give their music more of a grunge feel, with little success. Anyhow, one day last summer after visiting Sleaze Roxx I decided to check out a band called Shotgun Messiah. They caught my attention after I had seen glam shots of Marilyn Manson‘s Tim Skold sporting a full mane of hair and looking tanned like a Filipino. The first CD of theirs I laid my hands upon was a record called Violent New Breed. The album title sounded pretty cool so I decided to give it a spin, and after a few moments I was pretty surprised. Violent New Breed doesn’t really sound like a sleaze rock release. From the opening track “I’m A Gun” to the closing “I Come In Peace” it sounds like a cleaner and faster version of Manson. The truth is that this CD is not really a sleaze rock record at all. Being aware of the 90’s grunge invasion Shotgun Messiah decided to change their sound. But instead of choosing a grunge sound, like a lot of bands at the time did, they went for… Industrial! The band that recorded this record compromised only of Tim Scold and Harry Cody, gone were the drummer and additional bass player. More than that, there were no live drums used during the recording sessions. The drums were programmed by some guy called Ulf “Cybersank” Sandquist. Secondly, and most importantly, everything except the guitars, bass and vocals was digitally programmed. Hell, even the live instruments were beefed up using the computers. I can tell you Violent New Breed sounds totally different that any other CD from a sleaze rock band that you have ever heard. But that doesn’t mean it’s crappy at all. The songwriting is great, the guitars sharp, and Skold‘s voice is as gritty and aggressive as it gets. One thing you can say about the guy’s voice is that it is really unique, I haven’t heard anyone who sounds like him. His yells remind me of drunk, aggressive British football hooligans, eager to pick a fight anywhere and with anyone. Skold‘s voice is the epitome of power, a big ass sledgehammer straight between the eyes (or maybe ears). The best songs on this album, in my opinion, are the aggressive “I’m A Gun”, the equally fast and powerful “Monkey Needs”, and “I Come In Peace”. There isn’t ballad here, which isn’t really necessary, especially when you have a CD entitled Violent New Breed. This record shows that the man behind Shotgun Messiah at this time was Skold, as it is pretty similar to Skold‘s 1996 solo record. It is a one of a kind mixture of sleaze and industrial, with a lot of computers, shouting, sharp guitars, and is very aggressive. It is a good CD if you’re looking for a soundtrack for breaking stuff. I give Violent New Breed a solid thumb up, but hardcore sleaze rock fans may be little upset by the industrial feeling. Anyway, it’s really worth a listen.

Line Up:

Tim Skold – vocals, bass and programming
Harry Cody – guitar and programming
Ulf “Cybersank” Sandquist – programming

Produced by Cybersank and Shotgun Messiah.

Album:

After 25 years of their classic debut Swedes SHOTGUN Messiah are back, with a new album titled "Live; Down Decadencia Drive" to be released tomorrow.Original singer Zinny J. Zan and drummer Stixx Galore (now shortened to just Stixx) decided to reunite to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the debut album, and revive the glory days of Shotgun Messiah now 2016.Zan and Stixx recruited two renowned cats from the Swedish scene to fill the remaining band slots; superb guitarist Rob Marcello (Danger Danger, Mercello/Vestry, Laney's Legion) and bass player and recently top class producer Chris Laney on bass. Not wanting to resort to acting like all those other bands with few original members who still operate under an iconic band name, Zan and Stixx opted for just half the name: Shotgun."Live: Down Decadencia Drive" is an eight-track live album recorded with this new/part-reunited line-up that features every song from the band's debut 'Welcome To Bop City / Shotgun Messiah' minus the short instrumental, and, you know what, it's a helluva lotta fun.The tacked-on audience audio - a staple of classic live albums - is testament to this being a full-on overblown '80s throwback, and a true entertaining sleezin', teazin' release. This is a new version, but with the same kick-ass attitude of the debut Shotgun Messiah. Zinny's voice has the same toughness, is rough and a bit more mature than it was back then, and Rob Marcello's guitar licks are the cherry on top. What a great guitar slinger. The rhythm section is a blast, the audience participates in each song and the party doesn't stop. It even introduces original Kingpin (first Shotgun Messiah band name) vocalist J.K. Knox to join in on final track, 'Don't Care 'Bout Nothin'.With the first notes of "Squeezin Teazin", Shotgun put us directly on the mood and with 'Nowhere Fast', 'Nervous'' and 'Shout It Out' the adrenaline pounding red.Shotgun Messiah were one of the greats, with their first two releases (both remasters featured HERE) being essential albums in any melodic hard rock collection.Shotgun may well turn out to be an unlikely success story, what with the current obsession with reunions and reimaginings. With Laney and Marcello in the band any new product could really sting the senses: until then, this punchy live album will have you running wild, with wreck 'n' roll on your mind. Can't wait for a new studio album.
