Bio:

Lionheart is a British hard rock band formed in late 1980, originally featuring singer Jess Cox (ex-Tygers of Pan Tang), guitarist Dennis Stratton (ex-Iron Maiden), guitarist Steve Mann (ex-Liar, later with MSG, Michael Schenker and Eloy), and bassist/vocalist Rocky Newton (ex-The Next Band, Wildfire), and drummer Frank Noon (ex-The Next Band, Def Leppard). The band split up in 1986 but reformed in 2016 with a line-up featuring Stratton, Mann, Newton, plus vocalist Lee Small (Shy and Phenomena) and Clive Edwards (ex-UFO and Wild Horses) on drums.Lionheart made their debut one Saturday night at the Marquee Club in London but musical differences ended with Cox leaving the band replaced by former Lautrec frontman, Reuben Archer. Former Judas Priest drummer Les Binks replaced the Wild Horses-bound Noon for the 1981 UK tour with Def Leppard with former Wild Horses drummer Clive Edwards eventually replacing Binks. Archer, too, would briefly spend time in Wild Horses before forming Stampede with his step son, guitarist Laurence Archer, Noon, and bassist Colin Bond. The song "Lionheart", recorded by Reuben Archer, Dennis Stratton, Steve Mann, Rocky Newton, and Frank Noon would belatedly surface on the Heavy Metal Heroes Vol. 2 (Heavy Metal Records) compilation in 1982. That track remains the only representative recording of the band's early sound as they would change their style significantly later on.Lionheart are due to appear at the Sweden Rock festival in June 2017.A winter UK tour with Airrace in November and December 2017 is also scheduled.

Album:

"Hot Tonight" is the only official LIONHEART album... until few weeks when the band will return after more than 30 years with a new, second CD. Meanwhile, let's enjoy their superb 1984's debut Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records.A super-group of sorts founded by ex Iron Maiden Dennis Stratton, the band slowly made a name in the NWOBHM movement, but at the time of the recording of "Hot Tonight" they embraced a Melodic Rock / AOR sound & style.Part of the legendary line-up featured on the ground-breaking Iron Maiden debut, within a year of its release guitarist Dennis Stratton found himself out in the cold.Joining forces with one-time Liar guitarist Steve Mann (later of course to join the MSG ranks), bassist Rocky Newton (McAuley Schenker Group ) and original Tygers Of Pan Tang vocalist Jess Cox – we’ll gloss over the constantly changing drum seat for now – this new band of budding hopefuls (by then already christened Lionheart) set about writing a batch of songs that would attract the interest of promoters and labels alike. It didn’t take too long to figure out that the rasping growl of Cox wasn’t suitable for the commercially slanted songs they were coming up with, and after auditioning a number of different singers (including Lautrec’s Reuben Archer) they eventually settled on session man Chad Brown. Possessed of a soulful, passion drenched melodic ard rock voice, Chad’s classic vibrato fitted the mood perfectly. Thanks to Nigel Thomas (former manager of Joe Cocker and Spooky Tooth) the band scored themselves a US deal with CBS, and in the spring of ‘84 decamped to Los Angeles to record their debut album "Hot Tonight" under the guidance of producer Kevin Beamish.A household name thanks to recent mega platinum successes with REO Speedwagon, Beamish was the perfect choice to help Lionheart mould their friendly Melodic hard rock / AOR sound, and when "Hot Tonight" duly emerged several months later they made no apologies for the distinctly American sheen it conveyed.Indeed, despite its British origin, Lionheart's debut is built on the songwriting and production standards of American melodic hard rock.Boasting a surfeit of strong hooks, multi-layered harmonies and impetuous keyboards, tracks like the hugely infectious ‘Towers Of Silver’, the audacious ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ (resplendent with its pompous keys), the fizzing ‘Wait For The Night’, brooding ‘Nightmare’ and spirited title track ‘Hot Tonight’ all showcased a band that would surely go all the way.Lionheart's "Hot Tonight" is a cult classic, for years out of print and never officially released on CD until this Rock Candy Records remaster. Most songs on this album open on staccato keyboards (and I love this) in a pure mid-80s AOR fashion, followed by a pumping rhythm section, sharp guitars, and the melodic, clean vocals plenty of harmonies. There's a colorful booklet in this Rock Candy reissue including never seen photos provided by Steve Mann himself, and a complete essay about the band / recording plus previously unknown details.

Steve Mann - guitars, backing vocals, keyboards

Album:

After the recent post of LIONHEART's great album remastered and waiting for the band's official second effort in more than 30 years to be released soon, it's fitting to be featured on this blog "Unearthed; Raiders Of The Lost Archives", a terrific double CD only appeared in Japan compiling all Lionheart '80s recordings than never made it into disc.Since their foundation in 1980, Lionheart was the most famous unsigned band in Great Britain. After several sold-out shows at the legendary The Marquee without a single song released, Lionheart played at The Reading Festival and were booked to support Def Leppard on their 1981 British tour.Really impressive for a band without a recording contract. And that's because the quality of the musicians involved.Dennis Stratton (Iron Maiden, Praying Mantis), Steve Mann (MSG, The Sweet, Eloy) and Rocky Newton (Wild Fire, Def Leppard, MSG) not only were excellent musicians, but together formed one of the most respected European 'harmony vocals' trio from the first half of the '80s.The trio arranged and recorded backing vocals as session musicians for almost every Rock record that came out in UK at the early '80s, from Def Leppard to UFO, Grand Prix to Uriah Heep, and countless more.Additionally, and while playing all over Europe, Lionheart recorded tons of demos. The band experienced several line-up changes in the drum and keyboard slots, but the core of Stratton / Mann / Newton stay intact. The 1983 composed songs / demos ended on what was Lionheart's album Hot Tonight, but the previous from 1981-82, and the latter (1984-85) remained unreleased.Over the years since originally appeared, Lionheart album 'Hot Tonight' became very popular in Japan, with lots of fans hungry for more. Ironically, the band never toured in Asia. That's when Japanese record label Pony Canyon approached Stratton / Mann / Newton for a possible new album, or some previously unreleased material. All the tapes from the '80s were checked and the songs on this "Unearthed; Raiders Of The Lost Archives" carefully selected by the 3 musicians, all remastered by Steve Mann himself. What you have here are some precious gems from this incredibly talented band that shouda been huge.On the first CD we find the songs from their early era, more hard rocking and influenced by the NWOBHM.Of course there's the track that names the band, 'Lionheart', as far I know the only officially released before as part of the 'Heavy Metal Heroes Volume II' LP (HMRecords, 1982).'Don't You Know What Love Is?' not only has a similar name to Foreigner's song, but it also sounds like the American band hardest moments, while 'Give Me The Light' is a highlight with a midtempo pace in the vein of Grand Prix. Then CD 2 is a must for mid-Eighties AOR suckers and fans of 'Hot Tonight', as most of these were composed / recorded between 1984-85, plus some tracks that never made it into the album. As examples there's a catchy melodic rocker in 'Sweet Surrender', lots of synths in 'Don't Make A Fool Out Of Me' (it sounds like a lost Virginia Wolf song), an even I find a little hair metal on the fun 'Every Dog Has His Day'.This 2-CD box packaging is excellent, with a family-tree of all band members, a colorful 24-page booklet with rare photos, lyrics and liner notes from all musicians.Yeah, Lionheart's "Unearthed; Raiders Of The Lost Archives" is a must have for collectors and fans of '80s Melodic Hard Rock / AOR.

Album:

Lionheart was formed in late 1980 by Dennis Stratton (lead guitar/backing vocals, ex-Iron Maiden), Jess Cox (lead vocals, ex-Tygers Of Pan Tang), Steve Mann (lead guitar/backing vocals, ex-Liar), Rocky Newton (bass guitar/backing vocals, ex-Wildfire) and Frank Noon (drums, ex-Def Leppard). The band began playing gigs including regular shows at London's Marquee Club, but had problems maintaining a consistent line-up. The core personnel of Dennis, Steve and Rocky remained but various singers passed through the band including Rueben Archer, John Farlham and Bob Hawthorn. They eventually settled as a 4-piece with Dennis and Rocky sharing lead vocal duties. The drummer's stool was variously occupied by Les Binks (ex-Judas Priest), Niko McBrain (ex-Trust and subsequently Iron Maiden) and Clive Edwards (ex-Wild Horses).Between 1981 and 1984 Lionheart played regular live shows and filled the support slot for tours by both Def Leppard and Whitesnake. In between gigs they spent many hours writing and recording demos of new songs while searching for a record deal. It wasn't until 1984 that CBS Records in the USA offered them a contract, by which time they had recruited Chad Brown on lead vocals. They flew over to Los Angeles in March 1984 to record their debut album "Hot Tonight" with Kevin Beamish in the production chair and session man Bob Jenkins, who had previously worked with Leo Sayer and Kiki Dee, on drums. The album was recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and mixed at Kendun Recorders.Upon their return to the England, Lionheart recorded a high-budget video for the single "Die For Love". The late comic genius Rik Mayall played the part of the mad professor, which in later years achieved cult status on YouTube due in part to the wonderfully wooden acting of the band! Unfortunately, planned UK tours as support to Kansas and Foreigner were cancelled at the last moment. Promotion of the album suffered and Lionheart found themselves in limbo. Chad Brown left the band in 1985 to be replaced by Keith Murrell, with Toby Sadler coming in on keyboards. More demos were recorded with the new line-up but unfortunately the momentum had been lost and the band eventually broke up. Rocky went on to record backing vocals on two Def Leppard albums and joined Michael Schenker with Steve, while Dennis spent 15 years with Praying Mantis. In 2016 Dave Herron, promoter of the Rockingham Festival in Nottingham, asked Lionheart to reunite for one performance and all original members, apart from Chad Brown, did so. The reunion created quite a stir, not least within the band itself, and it was decided to carry on with the subsequent recording of a new album followed by an acclaimed appearance at Sweden Rock. The new record, "Second Nature", was created between November 2016 and May 2017 and was produced, engineered and mastered by Steve Mann in his own studio in Hannover. A mini tour of Japan with Praying Mantis was scheduled for June/July with further UK shows with Airrace in November/December. The album release on AOR Heaven throughout Europe is set for 25th August.

Album:

LIONHEART is an English supergroup of sorts, since it has always featured well seasoned musicians since its formation in 1980. The band currently features members of UFO and MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, plus the band's founder Dennis Stratton, who is most known for his guitar work on the first IRON MAIDEN album. Their third studio album “The Reality of Miracles” (arriving July 31st) might not be considered NWOBHM, but it's certainly some excellent Melodic Hard Rock that sounds right from the days the band first began.“Thine is the Kingdom” starts the album off right. There's some excellent layering of instruments with some lovely keys and synths, a solid bass line, and melodic guitars matched with a perfect pace and some gorgeous vocals. “High Plains Drifter” and the title track “The Reality of Miracles” both have this feeling of pure nostalgia to them. Something about the mixing and the vocal melody is like a old warm blanket or like getting a reassuring hug with a mug of hot chocolate after a hard day. They're just so warm and fuzzy and it's pleasant to listen to.“Five Tribes” shakes it up and gets a bit heavier with some shred in the guitar solos sprinkled throughout the song. It's definitely more of a Metal laden track for certain! “Behind the Wall” is quite a ballad. I was already locked in when the synths started the song out, then just got more theatrical and melodic as it went along. I love the layered vocals and just all around atmosphere of this one, it reminds me of the iconic ballad “Alone” by HEART at some points. “Widows” and “Outlaws of the Western World” both define AOR in sound. Catchy hooks, a melodic guitar solo with just a touch of some dueling midway through, and of course powerhouse vocals. What more could you ask for?“The First Man” is one epic song. LEE goes all out vocally in this one; absolutely stellar range and dynamic as hell. The theatrics in this song are fantastic too; I'm a sucker for some frantic keys and great guitar melodies to enhance the story being told. “Still it Rains on Planet Earth” is the closing track that truly finishes the album as well as it began. The lyrics are a bit cheesy, but the catchy melodies and bits of theatrics still make it worthwhile. The guitar work is just right as well.Overall, “The Reality of Miracles” is a super enjoyable album. The melodies are so catchy and rather beautiful and emotional at times. Every single member of this band is amazing at their craft and it's all so clean and precisely played. There is also this nostalgic feeling in every song; someone could have handed this album to me and I would have guessed it was recorded in the late 70s or early 80s alongside BOSTON and STYX. The mixing is perfect for that 'spin this on your turntable' sound. I also liked the occasional splashes of Hard Rock in some of the songs, but it was subtle and not at all jarring to the album's overall vibe. LIONHEART makes some fantastic Melodic Rock!

Album:

While working on a new record and now being signed by Metalville Records, Brit melodic rock stalwarts LIONHEART are properly releasing world-wide their comeback album “Second Nature“, remastered and with additional bonus tracks.Easily one of the best melodic rock albums from 2017 and one of the best from the decade, LIONHEART nailed the true atmosphere from the genre here.Joining original members guitarists Dennis Stratton & Steve Mann (ex-MSG, Sweet) and bassist Rocky Newton (ex-MSG), there are drummer Clive Edwards (ex-Wild Horses, UFO) and vocalist Lee Small (Phenomena, Shy). Small is an inspired choice as his singing style suits the melodic hard rock on this album perfectly. And what an album! Chock full of catchy melodious tunes with some real monster songs like ‘Give Me The Light’ and ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’. Both have harmony vocals around the choruses that bring to mind the mighty Sweet.’30 Years’ fair gallops along like a young thoroughbred, with the guitars firing on all six on this one.To cool things down a little we have the superb power ballad ‘Every Boy In Town’. The keys add to the big production feel to this one, highlighting again what a great match for the music Lee Small is with his melodic singing.A surprise is the cover of Chris de Burgh’s ‘Don’t Pay The Ferryman’ and what a corker of a cover it is! They rock this one up. ‘Heartbeat Radio’ is another fine slice of hard rock and features again fast ‘n’ furious guitar solos from Dennis Stratton and Steve Mann.LionHeart is a Melodic Hard Rock machine, perfectly oiled and while awesomely melodic they have the bite missing in most acts from the genre nowadays. “Second Nature” rocks bigtime, not a duff tune to be heard, as it is high quality classic Melodic Hard Rock from start to finish. This remaster serve the songs with more punch, especially the rhythm section and vocals

Album:

Back in 1980, when the NWOBHM movement was just kicking off, ex-Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton joined guitarist/keyboardist Steve Mann, bass player Rocky Newton, ex-Tygers of Pan Tang singer Jess Cox and ex-Def Leppard drummer Frank Noon to form Lionheart. Fast forward to 2024, and the core of Lionheart remains the same, with Lee Small (The Sweet, ex-Shy) stepping in on lead vocals, and drummer Clive Edwards (ex-Pat Travers, Uli Jon Roth & Wild Horses) returning to complete the lineup. Since their rebirth in 2016, Lionheart has thrilled Melodic Metal fans with their big melodies, slick guitar work, and top notch production values. The third album since the band reunited, The Grace of a Dragonfly touches on the loss and heartbreak of World War 2, and the heavy toll it took on ordinary people around the globe. The lyrics not only reflect on the pain and grief inflicted by war on ordinary, innocent people in every conflict zone, but also their strength, resilience, and determination. The band very much wanted to make this an anti-war album, while at the same time remembering those who fought for our freedom. The Grace of a Dragonfly shows how Lionheart continues to improve with every album, and on this record the production is stellar. Steve Mann (McAuley Schenker Group, MSG) has out done himself on producing this album with mixes that are spot on, near angelic vocal harmonies, and an overall superb mix. In short, Lionheart – The Grace of a Dragonfly is the pinnacle for the band, and has the big melodies, sweet duel guitars of Stratton and Mann, and the impeccable foundation of Newton and Edwards. Overall, this album is more than worth a spin, and Melodic Metal fans need to add it to their list.
