Bio:

Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish hard rock band formed in 1979, whose most successful period came in the early 1980s. The band broke up in 1985 after their drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley died in a car accident a year earlier. Original members vocalist Michael Monroe and guitarist Andy McCoy reunited in 2001 and were active with the new line-up of Hanoi Rocks until 2009.In the 80s, Hanoi Rocks were the most successful Finnish band internationally and are still popular in the United States, Japan, and the UK.They were also one of the first rock bands to tour in Asia, and were the first western rock band to play in Delhi.[citation needed] According to Finnish radio and TV personality Jone Nikula (who was also Hanoi Rocks' tour manager in the 2000s), Hanoi Rocks' albums have sold between 780,000 and 1,000,000 copies around the world, but mostly in Scandinavia and Japan.Hanoi Rocks was formed in Helsinki in 1980 by Michael Monroe (Matti Fagerholm) and his friend, guitarist Andy McCoy (Antti Hulkko). McCoy did not join the band immediately since, at the time, he was the guitarist for the Finnish punk band Pelle Miljoona Oy. McCoy allowed Monroe to form the band based on an agreement that McCoy would join later. The original line-up of Hanoi Rocks consisted of Michael Monroe on vocals, former Pelle Miljoona Oy guitarist Stefan Piesnack, Monroe's old friend guitarist Nasty Suicide, bassist Nedo Soininen and drummer Peki Sirola. The band toured Finnish clubs, playing McCoy and Monroe's own songs and covers like Cheap Trick's "He's a Whore", The Police's "Born in the 50's" and MC5's "Looking at You". At one of the band's first shows was Seppo Vesterinen, who had brought big name artists like Iggy Pop and Frank Zappa to Finland. Vesterinen soon became the band's manager after talking with McCoy and Monroe. In late 1980 Andy McCoy left Pelle Miljoona Oy to join Hanoi Rocks, and was later joined by another former Pelle Miljoona Oy member, bassist Sami Yaffa. McCoy replaced Stefan Piesnack who had been arrested for drugs, and Yaffa replaced Nedo. By then Peki had left the band, and when the band relocated to Stockholm, they hired an old friend of Monroe and McCoy's, drummer Gyp Casino.

Album:

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks is the first studio album by the Finnish rock band Hanoi Rocks, released in 1981.Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks was recorded in February, 1981, between Hanoi Rocks' club shows. While the album was produced by Andy McCoy and Michael Monroe under the name "The Muddy Twins" (inspired by "The Glimmer Twins"), the album was recorded by Swedish Seppo Johansson, who worked at the studio.Even though the album is regarded by many as good, Andy McCoy commented in the December, 1981 issue of Soundi that Johansson ruined many of the songs. Also Michael Monroe says that he can't listen to his singing on the first Hanoi-album, as his voice wasn't very good yet.The album was originally going to be titled Some Like It Hot or Some Like It Cut,but Jim Pembroke suggested the name Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, which the band ultimately chose. The biggest hit of the album was "Tragedy". "Walking With My Angel" is a cover of a song from 1961 by Bobby Vee]. "Don't Never Leave Me" was re-recorded and released as "Don't You Ever Leave Me" on Hanoi Rocks' fifth album Two Steps from the Move. The album appears several times in the 2000 film High Fidelity.

Album:

British label Rock Candy have been doing a great job remastering some true gems over the last ten years, and now are releasing their first double-CD: the remaster of "Two Steps From The Move", one of the best records from HANOI ROCKS, the influential band from Finland.Back in the early '80s when Hanoi Rocks moved lock stock and barrel from Finland to London the streets were on fire with possibilities. Looking like an explosion in a paint factory and sounding like a devilish mash-up of the Rolling Stones jamming with the Sweet, it's fair to say that they made a unique impression. With an anything can happen and it probably will vibe, the band’s ferocious on stage performances were legendary, establishing them as the front runners of a movement that looked like it would instantaneously blast them to success.Signed to CBS records and teamed up with renowned producer Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Kiss) "Two Steps From The Move" was cut in the frenetic environs of New York City, polished in Toronto and completed in London. It was hailed as a masterpiece, bringing together all the hopes and promises of a band perfectly poised to assume complete control of the scene. However, during their American tour, front man Mike Monroe broke his ankle, forcing the group to postpone dates. Then, while Mike was recuperating, on Dec 8th 1984 the band’s British drummer, Razzle was, tragically, killed in a Los Angeles automobile accident with Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil in the driving seat.Anyway, "Two Steps From The Move" sold very well all over the world, and its sounds & attitude incluenced countless bands from the upcoming L.A. Glam / Hair Metal scene.Loaded with an incredible selection of songs, "Two Steps From The Move" found Hanoi Rocks focussing on as much mayhem as humanly possible with a penchant for cheeky lyrics and catchy melodies.Tracks such as ‘Don’t You Ever Leave Me’, ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams’, ‘Up Around The Bend’ and ‘Boiler (Me Boiler ‘N’ Me)’ defined their unique brand of swashbuckling bravado perfectly. This is a true 'Special Deluxe Collector's Edition', as alongside from the clean remaster of the original abum, the release features an extra disc with 11 bonus tracks, all of them never previously available on CD.

Album:

Hanoi Rocks' Oriental Beat receives the Redux treatment, officially mixed and resurrected from the original sessions and released on deluxe vinyl, CD and digital formats. CD and vinyl contain lyrics reviewed and approved by Michael Monroe.Dubbed the 'Re(al)-Mix', this 40th anniversary edition was mixed by Petri Majuri at E-Studios in Finland in collaboration with the band. Singer Michael Monroe calls this release 'the longest and slowest album project ever," stating that "40 years in the making, it's not just a remix, it's the REAL MIX overseen and approved by Hanoi Rocks."Recorded in London, UK in 1981 for £200 a day, Oriental Beat emerged during the heyday of the British punk and new wave movement, when the band hung out with everyone from Phil Lynott to the Damned. Hanoi Rocks original drummer Gyp Casino says of Oriental Beat, "We used to put heart, soul and a little bit of pain to make this record something different," but the sound of the album originally released in 1982 didn't fit their efforts at the time. Bassist Sami Yaffa called it "the worst sounding album of our career" and Michael Monroe said that "the album's producer had no idea what the band was about and his mix of the album was horribly wrong ".Oriental Beat's original engineer, Peter Wooliscroft, was not a rock producer, and according to Hanoi Rocks manager Richard Bishop, "he was trying to mix the album to make it sound like Spandau Ballet" before the band released it remix or re-record since the label had run out of money and the master tapes had disappeared, the band has always considered Oriental Beat's original mix a "disaster". When the tapes mysteriously showed up in Universal's vault recently, the band were finally able to mix and re-sequence the album the way it was supposed to sound.Oriental Beat is a pivotal masterpiece, born just as Hanoi Rocks was about to explode on the world stage, and written at the absolute peak of lead guitarist Andy McCoy's creativity as a songwriter. Rhythm guitarist Nasty Suicide says, "Only now, after stripping it down to the bare minimum and tweaking it to bring out what was truly laid down, has our dream come true! THIS is what it's all about," as this definitive edition of Oriental Beat now fully demonstrates the ultimate arrogance and attitude that defined the band. Monroe says, "Now, 40 years after its original release in 1982, the album sounds finally as great as it deserves, with no overdubs or samples," adding McCoy, "It's better now than ever. That's how it should sound. So enjoy... Another shot of Hanoi Rocks". Get your shot of Oriental Beat the way it was always meant to be.

Album:

FOR FANS OF: Guns N’ Roses / New York Dolls- 5CD collection tracing the career of Finnish rock icons Hanoi Rocks.Early 80s rock majesty with a sleazy edginess on three studio albums and a classic live set from 1984. Plus classic singles and rarities compilation ‘Self Destruction Blues’.Although Finland is now quite rightly recognized as a highly influential and fertile source of rock and metal artists, that wasn’t the case when singer Michael Monroe met guitarist and songwriter Andy McCoy in 1979. Hanoi Rocks formed in Helsinki, and with a line-up completed by Nasty Suicide on guitar, Sam Yaffa on bass and Gyp Casino on drums, they released their debut ‘Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks’ (CD1) in 1981.The same line-up would record follow-up, ‘Oriental Beat’ (CD2), released in 1982. Finding loyal fans in the UK music press, especially in the pages of Sounds and Kerrang!, the band developed a cult following, from California to Japan. Also released in 1982, and one of the band’s strongest sets, ‘Self Destruction Blues’ (CD3) was a compilation of singles and B-sides only previously available in the native Finland, a punk-infused glam and hard rock classic in its own right.By 1983, Hanoi Rocks had relocated to London, inspiring the song ‘Tooting Bec Wreck’, a track from their next album, ‘Back to Mystery City’ (CD4). Produced by Mott The Hoople’s Dale Griffin and Pete “Overend”” Watts, it was the first record to feature Londoner Razzle on drums. The album certainly had a more commercial sound than the punk inspired approach of previous albums, becoming a major influence on the hard rock and glam metal scene of the 1980s, and a big inspiration for Guns N’ Roses, who would re-issue these early Hanoi Rocks records on their own Uzi Suicide label later in the decade.Throughout their career, Hanoi Rocks were known as a formidable live act, as captured on 1984’s ‘All Those Wasted Years’ (CD5), which was recorded at London’s legendary Marquee Club in December 1983.Signing to CBS in 1984, the band looked set to break into the mainstream when their career was cruelly cut short when drummer Razzle was killed in a car crash.
