Info:

Praying Mantis are an English rock band. Although a part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene, they pursued a musical direction more melodic and AOR-sounding than their contemporaries.Their formation considerably pre-dated the NWOBHM movement. They were formed in 1974 by the Troy brothers, Tino and Chris, both college students. Like several NWOBHM bands they made their first available recording at Neal Kay's Soundhouse recording studio, which was released as the Soundhouse Tapes EP in 1979.1980 saw their profile considerably raised with support slots for Iron Maiden and Ronnie Montrose's Gamma. The attention won them a recording contract with Arista Records and they released their best-known work Time Tells No Lies in 1981.Management and line-up instability undermined their success and Arista dropped them. The following year they signed for Jet Records, but two subsequent singles flopped and the band folded. They had recorded a version of the Russ Ballard penned track "I Surrender", but ran into conflict with Rainbow, who went on to release their version, and had a Top 10 worldwide hit. Instead, Praying Mantis recorded another single,"Cheated". It reached No. 69 in the UK Singles Chart in January 1981.The band maintained a strong fan base in Japan, and when the Troys temporarily reformed Praying Mantis for a NWOBHM nostalgia tour in 1990, they were encouraged by the response to resurrect the band full-time. Their live work was released as Live at Last, and a follow-up studio album Predator in Disguise was released the following year, and the band soldiered on into the new century. A compilation album, The Best of Praying Mantis, was released in 2004. Following further line-up changes, a new album, Sanctuary, was released in the spring of 2009 and has gained worldwide media acclaim. In 2013 the band announced they are to release a new single in October 2013. The single is to officially introduce new members, [John Cuijpers] (vocals) and [Hans in’t Zandt] (drums) to the bands fanbase after playing Colchester, Ipswich (with support from MGR Records band Kaine) and Cambridge Rock Festival with the brand new line up.A new album called Legacy is due for release early June 2015.

Album:

Founded by brothers Tino and Chris Troy, PRAYING MANTIS developed a reputation for delivering thinking man’s metal very much defining the genre in Great Britain during the '80s. One of the band's favorite albums, "Time Tells No Lies", has been Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records including 5 bonus tracks.Indeed, Praying Mantis had the musical chops to rival and, at times, outshine the competition by utilising twin lead guitar, ambitious arrangements and multilayered harmonies; their songs were melodic yet intricately arranged and packed a powerful punch."Time Tells No Lies", produced by Time Friese Green (Touch), engineered by Mike Shipley (Def Leppard) and housed in a stunning Rodney Matthews designed sleeve, appeared at the beginning of the '80s and attracted highbrow praise positioning them as a band to definitely watch out for.Sure, in the end they didn’t quite reach the peak of popularity attained by Maiden or Leppard, but their presence on the scene was not without significance and "Time Tells No Lies" remains a gleaming testament to their talent.'Cheated' is a hard rocker that opens the album with a bang, while 'All Day and All of the Night,' a remake of the Kinks classic, keeps the energy going. Then you have the fun 'Rich City Kids' (with some Saxon on it), the highly melodic 'Beads Of Ebony' remind you Thin Lizzy, and 'Children Of The Earth' has a classic British-made chorus. The more progressive songs 'Running for Tomorrow' and the slow, almost ballad-esque 'Lovers to the Grave' show what made this band special. This Rock Candy Records remaster of "Time Tells No Lies" (almost out of print) is the first official European release of this album on CD, with their usual 24-bit remastering from original source tapes, five bonus tracks (including the classic single titled as the band, 'Praying Mantis'), 3,500 word essay about the making of the album, band involvement and additional photos spread out over a 16 page full colour booklet. It’s great to see this much ignored tome (way ahead of their time) by Praying Mantis get to bask in the limelight once again, in my opinion, one of the precursor bands of the Melodic Hard Rock sound in UK during the entire '80s.

Album:

After the recent post here of PRAYING MANTIS' classic album Time Tells No Lies in its remastered form, one of you asked for this "Metalmorphosis", the EP released by the band to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their debut Time Tells No Lies. It was a limited edition disc featuring 5 classic Praying Mantis songs re-recorded in 2010 by the current band line-up.But exclusively for the Japanese market, "Metalmorphosis" was in fact a full length album including 6 additional tracks plus a completely different artwork. The EP release of "Metalmorphosis" included three songs from that classic Time Tells No Lies (“Children of the Earth,” “Lovers to the Grave” and “Panic in the Streets”) as well as the song “Praying Mantis” from the band’s first single, and the track “Captured City” that only appeared on the original NWOBHM compilation Metal For Muthas. This Japanese version adds the awesome "Running For Tomorrow", "Beads Of Ebony" and "Flirting With Suicide" from that mythical first album, while "Time Slipping Away", "Can't See The Angels" and " Borderline" are taken from their excellent record 'Predator In Disguise'.All these stupendous songs were re-recorded with today's modern technology by Praying Mantis in a slightly more polished & melodic form, but still retaining that vital and spirited attitude when they were a hungry young outfit. The vocals in particular stand out, as it is somewhat surprising (in a good way) to hear Mike Freeland, who delivered such a polished performance on the band’s 2009 album Sanctuary, get into the stomping hard rock of “Praying Mantis” and the otherworldly metallic “Captured City.”It’s always a risky business when long-running acts decide to revisit their classic material, but in this case "Metalmorphosis" sounds exactly like what it was intended to be – a celebration of the band’s history and a testimony to the staying power of a band that has withstood what seems like countless changes in lineups, labels and musical fads. This "Metalmorphosis" Japanese Edition is collectors piece, out of print, a must for every Melodic Hard Rock fan out there.

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl will release the tenth studio album from British rockers PRAYING MANTIS, titled "Legacy", on August 21.The early reactions to the new songs have been outstanding and there is a real buzz beginning to emerge that this could arguably be the best album that MANTIS have ever made! Bold words to be sure, but this is more than mere record label hyperbole..."Legacy" is the first recording to feature the two new members from the Netherlands, John "Jaycee" Cuijpers and Hans in't Zandt (vocals and drums respectively), who have truly provided a new dimension to the writing process and musical performances.Together with the prolific songwriting talents of Chris Troy and guitarists Tino Troy and Andy Burgess, they have been instrumental not only in the writing of the new songs, but in providing a new vision in terms of the sound engineering and production. The recording of the album was carried out in various recording studios in Belgium, Netherlands and U.K.As per the previous record, "Sanctuary", the mixing of the new album was done by Andrew Reilly in his studio in Atlanta. The first single, "Fight For Your Honour", will be accompanied by a video shot while the band performed the song for the first time at their acclaimed performance at the Frontiers Rock Festival II in Milan, Italy. One of the most influential and famous artists in the rock field, Rodney Matthews (MAGNUM, DIAMOND HEAD, ALLEN/LANDE), has been commissioned to do the artwork for the album in the same style and stunning quality that so many fans loved on the original MANTIS albums like "Time Tells No Lies" and the later album "Predator In Disguise".PRAYING MANTIS are a well-established band of melodic hard rockers. They were formed by brothers Tino and Chris Troy in 1973 and together with bands like IRON MAIDEN, DEF LEPPARD, SAXON, and others they spearheaded the NWOBHM movement. While they did not see the same dizzying heights of success as some of their contemporaries, PRAYING MANTIS nonetheless became one of the most influential bands of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The band has remained active over the years and still record and play live regularly. An EPK (Electronic Press Kit) for the album is available below.

Line-Up:

John "Jaycee" Cuijpers - Vocals
Andy Burgess - Guitars & Backing Vocals

Album:

Praying Mantis is pleased to announce their 11th studio album, "Gravity". After the positive reception afforded to the band's last studio release, "Legacy" (2015), the new record sees the band return with another inspired, take-no-prisoners set. The album also sees Mantis retain the same line-up, with John Cuijpers (vocals) and Hans in’t Zandt (drums) again contributing to the songwriting process. Alongside founder members Tino Troy, Chris Troy and Andy Burgess, they have not only helped in the writing of the songs, but also in providing a new dimension in terms of sound engineering and overall production. One of the most influential and well-known sleeve artists in the rock field, Rodney Matthews (Magnum, Diamond Head, Allen/Lande), has been commissioned to design the artwork for "Gravity" in the same style and stunning quality that so many fans loved on Mantis albums such as "Time Tells No Lies", "Predator In Disguise" and the aforementioned "Legacy".Praying Mantis is a well established band of melodic hard rockers. Album:

Only a few years from their 50th anniversary since forming in London by brothers Chris and Tino Troy, melodic hard rockers PRAYING MANTIS prove they are still a force to be reckoned with judging by this performance for the “Keep It Alive” album, due for release on Dec. 6th via Frontiers Music.Recorded at the Frontiers Rock Festival V last year on their Gravity tour, it kicks off strongly as it heads way back to 1979 for ‘Captured City’, originally released as a single. The riffs still enthrall after all these years, while ‘Panic In The Streets’ from their 1981 debut album Time Tells No Lies that influenced the NWOBHM genre is another age defying blast from the past with gritty riffs and luxurious backing vocals as all of the band have fine voices. A neat twin guitar/vocal interplay and pounding drum outro make it an early highlight.‘Highway’ has a touch of ‘Hysteria’ in the melodies and this number is a sumptuous slice of AOR at its very best. ‘Believable’, my favourite track from the 2015 The Legacy album see massive verses and choruses belted out by the band. It’s an emotional tour de force of a number that I didn’t want to end.A brace from the Gravity album sees ‘Keep It Alive’ being a full blooded foot to the floor headbanger and ‘Mantis Anthem’ is all slow, pounding grooves with stadium filling choruses and a majestic lead guitar solo midway.‘Dream On’ is a spine tingling ballad with backing vocals that flew around my headphones as lead singer John ‘Jaycee’ Cuipers soars with aplomb. ‘Fight For Your Honour’, another big song from the Legacy album has call to arms lyrics in this heavy rocker and once again the backing vocals are breathtaking. The heaviness ante is upped by ‘Predator In Disguise’ as the band lock in hungrily for some destructive dynamics and their set closes all too soon with a welcome return to the Time Tells No Lies album for ‘Children Of The Earth’. It’s a one last blast from the past of bruising riffs that add muscle as it gradually builds to a guitar laden outro. With an excellent set list covering all the Praying Mantis catalog, “Keep It Alive” clearly shows a band in full form, energetic, tight, and melodic as ever.

A compilation album, The Best of Praying Mantis, was released in 2004. Following further line-up changes, a new album, Sanctuary, was released in the spring of 2009 and has gained worldwide media acclaim. In 2013 the band announced they are to release a new single in October 2013. Album:

Praying Mantis has announced the release of 12th studio album, "Katharsis". The album sees the long-running British rock band steadily progressing from the sonic signatures of its last release, "Gravity"."Katharsis" features the same line-up that has been featured on the previous two albums, with vocalist Jaycee Cuijpers and drummer Hans in 't Zandt cementing themselves as part of the band's ongoing legacy. The two have truly provided a new dimension to the writing process and musical performances delivered by the band. Together with founding members Tino and Chris Troy and guitarist Andy Burgess, who has been with the band since 2008, they have been instrumental not only in the writing of the new songs, but in providing a new vision in terms of sound engineering and production. To hear and see the band now, fans will experience both the spirit and energy of the early 80s together with a technical style that brings the band into the modern era.Rainer Kalwitz, one of the most well-known album cover artists in rock, was commissioned to do the artwork for the album in the same style and stunning quality that so many fans loved on the original Mantis albums like "Time Tells No Lies", "Predator In Disguise" and "Legacy".Praying Mantis is now a well-established band of melodic hard rockers. Formed by the brothers Tino and Chris Troy in 1973, together with bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon and others they spearheaded the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) movement. While they did not see the same dizzying heights of success as some of the contemporaries, Praying Mantis nonetheless became one of the most influential bands of the NWOBHM. The band has remained active over the years and still records and plays live regularly, while evolving the style from the early beginnings to a more melodic hard rock style.

Bio:

Album:

Praying Mantis have announced the release of their 13th studio album, “Defiance”. The album comes to celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary and progresses from where the band has left off with their last release “Katharsis”.Once again “Defiance” sees the founding members, brothers Chris and Tino Troy at the helm of a combo of gelled musicians featuring vocalist Jaycee Cuijpers, drummer Hans in’t Zandt and guitarist Andy Burgess. The band’s line-up is more solid than ever and prepares to celebrate this important milestone with a UK and European tour where they will play the band’s classics along with their new tracks. By hearing and seeing the band now, fans will experience both the spirit and energy of the early '80s together with a technical style that brings the band into the modern era.Musically the new album offers the trademark Mantis sound, with twin guitar leads and sterling vocal work from Jaycee Cuijpers, but what really puts this record apart is the stunning quality of the songwriting which offers a credible mix of catchy songs along with superb epics. To round up the tracklisting the Mantis’ offer their own spin to the classic Rainbow hit “I Surrender” (penned by none other than Russ Ballard).Praying Mantis are now a well-established band of melodic hard rockers. Formed by brothers Tino and Chris Troy in 1973, together with bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon, and others they spearheaded the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) movement. While they did not see the same dizzying heights of success as some of their contemporaries, Praying Mantis nonetheless became one of THE most influential bands of the NWOBHM.
