Info:

White Lion is a Danish/American rock band that was formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish vocalist Mike Tramp and American guitarist Vito Bratta. Mainly active in the 1980s and early 1990s, releasing their debut album Fight to Survive in 1985. The band achieved success with their No. 8 hit "Wait" and No. 3 hit "When the Children Cry" from their second album, the double platinum selling Pride. The band continued their success with their third album, Big Game which achieved Gold status and their fourth album Mane Attraction which included a supporting tour. White Lion disbanded in 1992 and not long after their first compilation album, The Best of White Lion was released.Mike Tramp reformed White Lion with all new musicians in 1999 and again following a failed attempt to reform the original line up and several legal issues in 2004. The new White Lion released a live album in 2005 and a brand new studio album Return of the Pride in 2008.After moving from Denmark to Spain and then New York City, vocalist Mike Tramp (formerly of the bands Mabel,Studs and Danish Lions) met Staten Island guitarist Vito Bratta (formerly of Dreamer) in 1983. They decided to put together a new band and recruited drummer Nicki Capozzi and bassist Felix Robinson (formerly of Angel) and named the group White Lion.White Lion was signed by Elektra Records in 1984 and recorded their debut album Fight to Survive. Elektra was unhappy with the final recording, and after refusing to release the album, terminated the band's contract. Both Capozzi and Robinson soon left the band. Nicki Capozzi was replaced by former Anthrax drummer Greg D'Angelo, and Felix Robinson was replaced by bassist Dave Spitz (brother of Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz). Within a month of joining, however, Dave Spitz left to play bass with Black Sabbath and was replaced by James LoMenzo. The album Fight to Survive was eventually released by Victor Company of Japan, Ltd, (JVC Records) in Japan in 1985. Philadelphia-based Grand Slamm Records bought the album from Elektra and released it in America the following year, under licensed by Elektra/Asylum Records. A few months later, Grand Slam Records went bankrupt.Fight to Survive charted at number 151 on The Billboard 200 and featured the band's debut single and music video, "Broken Heart".In early 1986, White Lion, with a fictitious female member (portrayed by Louise Robey), had a brief part in the Tom Hanks/Shelley Long movie The Money Pit.Early in 1987, the band was signed by Atlantic Records. The recording of the album took six weeks[6] and on June 21, 1987 their album Pride was released. The first single, "Wait", was released on June 1, 1987, but did not reach the charts for nearly seven months. The Pride tour started in July 1987 as White Lion opened for Ace Frehley's 80s band Frehley's Comet. The next year and a half was filled with constant touring, opening for such bands as Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Stryper and Kiss. In January 1988 White Lion landed the opening slot for AC/DC on their Blow Up Your Video American tour. While touring with AC/DC, the Pride album and "Wait" single finally charted, due in no small part to MTV airing the "Wait" music video in regular rotation—nearly seven months after the single's release. "Wait" hit No. 8 on the singles chart, while Pride hit No. 11 on the album charts.Pride would remain on the Top 200 Billboard album charts for a full year, selling two million copies in the US alone and achieving double platinum status. In August 1988, the album's second single, "Tell Me", reached No. 58. Around the time this single was released, White Lion played at the Ritz club in New York City. The show was filmed and later aired on MTV.The Pride album's third single, a power ballad titled "When the Children Cry", made it to No. 3 on the charts with heavy MTV airplay. The success of "When the Children Cry" would eventually push sales of Pride over the two million mark. In addition, Vito Bratta was recognized for his instrumental talents by racking up Best New Guitarist awards with both Guitar World magazine and Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. All You Need Is Rock 'n' Roll was the final single released from the album. In the spring of 1989, the Pride tour finally ended, and the band released their first video albums titled "Live at the Ritz" and "One Night in Tokyo" both of which featuring full concerts on VHS.The band then immediately began work on their next album. In August 1989, White Lion released their third album, Big Game, a musically eclectic follow-up to Pride that featured the single "Little Fighter" (which peaked at No. 52), in Memory of The Rainbow Warrior, a Greenpeace boat which was destroyed by the French. A cover of Golden Earring's "Radar Love" (which peaked at No. 59) was released as the second single and "Cry for Freedom" was released as the third single. "Going Home Tonight" was released as the album's final single. The album quickly went gold, with a peak of No. 19 on the album charts.[9] The band's success continued with more constant touring. After two years of writing and recording, White Lion released Mane Attraction in the spring of 1991. More of a "back to basics" album, centering on strong hooks and melodic hard rock, the album was received well by the fans. Tramp also changed his singing style on this disc, as he was no longer comfortable singing high.Unfortunately, the album failed to reach the top 20 like the last two albums, charting at No. 61 on The Billboard 200.It received little or no airplay due to the recent Grunge explosion. The album also contained White Lion's only instrumental song, "Blue Monday", a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who had died while the band was writing for the album. The album featured the singles "Love Don't Come Easy" which peaked at number 24 on The Mainstream Rock Charts, "Lights and Thunder" and a re-recorded version of the band's debut single "Broken Heart", all of which featured music videos. "Out with the Boys" was released as a rare promo single and "Farewell to You" featured a music video montage."I have always said that Grunge didn’t kill the hard rock / glam rock movement. The rock movement killed itself. Hard Rock in the Eighties started off with the first wave of L.A bands. Then the second wave of L.A bands came along with the Classic seventies rockers who started to rebrand themselves to fit the scene. Then the third wave came and the fourth and the fifth further diluting the pool. Every two years, new cities got identified as the next big hub. So the Record Labels swarmed and so many inferior derivative bands got signed, that in the end, it all imploded. The real good acts couldn’t be heard from all the noise of the crap acts."Vito Bratta.Greg D'Angelo and James LoMenzo left the band soon after the album's release, citing "musical differences," but White Lion carried on with bassist Tommy T-Bone Caradonna and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Suicidal Tendencies, Y&T, Fiona). After briefly touring in support of Mane Attraction, Tramp and Bratta decided to fold the group, their last show being held in Boston at the Channel in September 1991. Exactly one year later in September 1992, the band's first compilation album was released, titled The Best of White Lion. A Video/DVD album featuring concert footage, behind the scenes interviews and all of the band's music videos was also released, titled Escape from Brooklyn.

Album:

Collector's edition remastered & reloaded.Fully remastered 24 Bit audio.Regarded by many as WHITE LION's best album, their debut "Fight To Survive" has been remastered with all the usual Rock Candy trimmings. The story of White Lion is a fascinating tale of triumph over adversity. Sure, you might apply that characterisation to the story of legions of rock bands, but the birth of their debut album was a roller coaster ride of emotional highs and extreme lows, played out with a backdrop of uncertainty always in ominous view. That they eventually triumphed with this album and also the platinum selling success of future releases on Atlantic Records only goes to show that talent will eventually win the day.Formed in New York by Danish born singer Mike Tramp and talented guitarist Vito Bratta, the band made waves on the local club scene, attracting local management who had connections to German producer Peter Hauke who offered to record the band at his studio in Frankfurt. With an album in the can the band were quickly signed to a sizeable deal with Elektra Records who subsequently and inexplicably decided to drop the band at the eleventh hour and the record was shelved.Fortunately JVC / Victor in Japan licensed the album and set in motion a series of events that led to them signing with Atlantic Records."Fight To Survive" was eventually issued in the US on the independent Philadelphia-based Grand Slamm Records and provoked huge accolades amongst the rock cognoscenti who quite rightly hailed tracks such as "Broken Heart", "Cherokee", "The Road To Valhalla" and the title track as stunning hard rock nuggets showcasing one of the most accomplished bands of the era."Fight To Survive" is pure hard rock, with soaring vocals and a killer guitar work. For sure, White Lion was a different beast in the overcrowded US scene of the era, and one of the best and more distinctive.Bright remaster by Rock Candy with a warm low end and hiss cleaning.

Album:

Rock Candy Records just 'Remastered & Reloaded' the first two major label WHITE LION albums in a Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, both featuring bonus tracks.White Lion's "Pride" still ranks amongst the best the '80s US hard rock scene ever produced.White Lion's rise to stardom was not without its fair share of difficulties. It started off well with Mike Tramp relocating from his native Denmark to the East Coast of America and teaming up with virtuoso guitarist Vito Bratta.Securing a coveted record deal with Elektra Records the band looked set for bigger and better things, but it all came crashing down when the label inexplicably decided not to release their debut album.Fortunately a record deal and a new loyal fan base in Japan and Europe carried the torch helping them to get back in the ring and fight another day. It was a struggle well worth contesting and one that ultimately paid handsome dividends when Atlantic Records eventually signed the band.Electing to work with seasoned producer Michael Wagener (Dokken, Mötley Crüe) and recording in Los Angeles, "Pride" hit the racks to great critical and commercial acclaim. Stuffed to the brim with numerous red-hot slices of melodic yet heavy rock, the album fast became one the era’s cornerstone releases, packing punches and knocking down barriers.Originally issued in June 1987, the record was propelled by the catchy single ‘Wait’, a track that caught fire at both radio and MTV, helping to establish the band as front line contenders. However, it was the power ballad ‘When The Children Cry’ that really accelerated sales, to two million and counting. Truly, one of the most heart-warming outcomes in the music business. This Rock Candy Records remastering of "Pride" is really good, greatly balanced avoiding brickwall sound. You have as bonus 5 tracks: the much sought after Extended Remix of 'Wait', plus 4 cuts recorded live during the presentation of the album, showing how hot While Lion was on stage at the peak of their career (just check Vito Bratta's killer licks!).

Album:

Rock Candy Records just 'Remastered & Reloaded' the first two major label WHITE LION albums in a Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, both featuring bonus tracks.White Lion's "Big Game" continued with the band's talents in delivering quality melodic, US hard rock tunes. The problem with any commercially successful album is that at some point its follow up will be compared and judged not only economically, but also creatively. This was exactly the position White Lion were to face with the release of their third album "Big Game".It was a really fine follow-up to their double platinum selling ‘Pride’ album, but it was recorded in a state of high anxiety. The band had spent almost a year touring the world and was immediately ushered back into the studio by their label and managers who were eager to capitalise on the success, so there was pressure to write and record in double quick time.Working once again with trusted producer Michael Wagener, and recorded in Los Angeles, the band jumped head-first into material, written by vocalist Mike Tramp and guitarist Vito Bratta and arranged over an intense three day session. That they came up with a number of quality songs is testimony to their talent and tenacity.More hard rockin' in the early Van Halen style (who at that time was more concentrated in keyboards) tracks such as the lyrically poignant ‘Little Fighter’ (in memory of The Rainbow Warrior, a Greenpeace boat which was intentionally sabotaged and sunk by the French Secret Service) and ‘Cry For Freedom’ lead the charge, but it’s their creative cover of Golden Earring’s ‘Radar Love’ that more than steals the show and became a successful single for White Lion.Rock Candy's treatment on "Big Game" is not among their finest remastering jobs in my humble opinion. Everything sounds fine, yet I would preferred a more 'punchy' output.Anyway, it blows out of the water the pretty flat original CD edition, and we have 3 bonus tracks; two hot live recordings, and the little gem "When The Children Cry (Live in Reharsal)". It does not sound like a live track, but more like studio recording (and I like this way), featuring the famous song in an 'electric' version, with drums, bass and electric (great) guitar.

Bio:

Album:

Mane Attraction was the fourth studio album by the hard rock band White Lion. It was released in 1991 (see 1991 in music) by Atlantic Records, and reached No. 61 on The Billboard 200 and No. 31 in the UK.After two years of writing and recording, White Lion released Mane Attraction in the spring of 1991. More of a "back to basics" album, centering on strong hooks and melodic hard rock, the album was received well by the fans. Unfortunately, the album failed to reach the top 20 like the last two albums. It received little or no airplay due to the recent Grunge explosion. The album also contained White Lion's only instrumental song, "Blue Monday", a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who had died while the band was writing for the album. The album's ballad tracks "You're All I Need" and "Till Death Do Us Part" gained a huge amount of airplay in the Philippines.A music video montage was released for the song "Farewell to You" which featured on the band's Video album "Escape from Brooklyn" in 1992.Greg D'Angelo and James Lomenzo left the band soon after the album's release, citing "musical differences", but White Lion carried on with bassist Tommy "T-Bone" Caradonna and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Suicidal Tendencies, Y&T).After briefly touring in support of Mane Attraction, Tramp and Bratta decided to call it a day, their last show being held in Boston at the Channel Club in September 1991.

Cherry Red / Hear No Evil Records just released “All You Need Is Rock N’ Roll : The Complete Albums 1985-1991” a 5xCD Box set including all the first WHITE LION albums.Sure, perhaps you already have other releases; the Rock Candy, Japan edition, etc, however this Box Set is an excellent value for money; a 5-disc box set perfectly remastered by the very busy Andy Pierce. And all for the price of 1 and a half CD.Discs 1-4 cover the first 4 albums, the superb debut ‘Fight To Survive’ (1985) and the 3 that followed on the Atlantic label, ‘Pride’ (1987), ‘Big Game’ (1989) and the vastly under rated ‘Mane Attraction’ (1991), all with bonus material.Disc 5 is the Live recording from The Ritz, New York 1988, a really good performance topped up with a few rehearsals as bonus tracks.

Album:

Limited digitally remastered and expanded edition digipak reissue of the album that should have been White Lion's 1985 major label debut, Fight To Survive! Features tracks that would soon become White Lion fan favorites such as "Cherokee," "El Salvador," and "Road To Valhalla". Includes seven bonus live tracks! For sure, White Lion was a different beast in the overcrowded US scene of the era, and one of the best and more distinctive.Album recorded at Hotline Studios, Frankfurt, West Germany - Feb. 1984

Bio:

Album:

In their origins established in New York City where they recorded the first demos, WHITE LION later achieved multi-platinum success with a solid combination of skilled songwriting, extraordinary musicianship and, of course, bombastic, thoroughly entertaining live concert performances.“When The Children Cry; Demos & Rarities ’83-’89” compiles the very early White Lion takes, studio demo versions of “Wait,” “When The Children Cry” and “Lady Of The Valley” which were later re-recorded for the band’s monster major label debut, Pride, among others songs. For many, these rawer, unpolished recordings are better than the uber-produced, showcasing White Lion’s real punch. As example, the version of “Tell Me” kills, especially the guitar work, and we largely prefer this one than the finally released.According to the press release, these tracks have been remastered. Remastering demos? Well, overall audio quality is very good, enough to appreciate these great songs in its primal stage.

Album:

Deadline / CleoRecs in conjunction to WHITE LION frontman Mike Tramp has released Anthology ’83 – ’89, a selection of very early recordings by the band compiled by Tramp himself and remastered to get the best quality audio possible – and the overall results are very good.Among the highlights there’s original versions of “Wait,” “When The Children Cry” and “Lady Of The Valley” which were later re-recorded for the band’s monster major label debut ‘Pride’. We find as well rare, high quality studio demos of tracks from ‘Mane Attraction’ and ‘Big Game’, including songs that didn’t make the final cut of those albums. What we have here is a comprehensive set of demos, alternate versions and unreleased tracks put together by Mike Tramp. That might put a few people off, but trust me, this is an essential purchase for the White Lion fan.First, the sound quality of these songs is very good, and second hearing these early versions and comparing them to the definitive is more than just interesting. The songs differ enough to stand on their own and in many cases are much heavier than the ones that ended up being released.Although these tracks are original versions or demo versions, you can tell the power of the each songs. The voice of Tramp sounds much wild than you hear later. Vito’s guitar sounds like he is, on his edge.Yes the sound is a bit rough, but there’s some kind of energy on each performance here that you can never get out of other albums. Very powerful, showcasing a band hungry for more. There are other things that I like about this release; you can hear a different version of songs such as “Hungry”, “Tell Me”, “The Road To Valhalla”, etc, and some are heavier, even better than the final, major label studio cuts.Fans must hear this one, also if you like ’80s US hard rock with energy.
