Album:

MR. BIG's breakthrough album "Lean Into It" was repeatedly requested on this blog in its Japanese Remaster SHM-CD version, the only release of this record at the moment of its release including 3 exclusive bonus tracks. A Limited Edition now out of print. The opener kicks you right in the nuts, one of the best Mr. Big tunes ever, “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song)”. Basically spoofing the whole 'How fast can you play?' question, Big’s creativity make this speed rocker a standout.“Alive and Kickin'” is melodious hard rocker with soulful vocal and killer chorus, then “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind” is classy and cool poppy with an incredible retro melody and adventurous guitar arrangement.“Lucky This Time” is a pearl written by talented Jeff Paris, driven by Billy Sheehan's rumbling bass groove, followed by the dynamic “Voodoo Kiss”, which ended side 1 of the original album. The catchy “Never Say Never”, co-written by Canada’s own Jim Vallance is another winner, and “Just Take My Heart” is one of the greatest ballads from the melodic hard rock genre, to showcase Eric Martin's velvety vocals.“My Kinda Woman” shred, and kicks the adrenaline back in. Paul Gilbert’s “A Little Too Loose”, bluesy and fun, it is one of the high points of this record.“Road To Ruin” shows off the vocal harmonies of the guys, all good singers in their own right. and it's another creative arrangement. Then, of course, the album ends with “To Be With You” which, hard to believe, was actually a really creative song too... before it got played to death.Listening to it now after many years, “To Be With You” is the typical rock ballad, but at the time of this release it was very different from the kind of ballads that other bands were putting out, except possibly Extreme. It has a sparse, vocal-oriented arrangement, an acoustic guitar solo, and no drums to speak of.Enough... you do not need more info about "Lean Into It"... it's a classic, an almost perfect melodic hard rock album from the superb musicianship & songwriting to the top notch production. And this Japanese remaster done by Isao Kikuchi is exceptional, with even more presence on this SHM-CD. We have as well 4 bonus tracks.

Line Up:

Album:

Debut album is remastered on SHM-CD and with bonus tracks. Let's go with their tremendous debut, the self-titled "Mr. Big".It was all the rage at the time. It was what made Winger into a hit-producing machine. It was simple: take a couple of total shredmaster ultra wizards on guitar and bass, slap an obscure drummer behind them, and put a proficient yet largely unknown guy up front on mic and leather pants duty. But instead of launching through a Yngwie-like solo-fest that shows us all that you can hit every note on the fretboard four times a measure, take a big step back and write some laid-back numbers with a little feeling, and some good catchy melody. Put in a couple of good solos, have at least two or three ballads for the couples, but make it cool enough so that the Steve Vai types who are into total minor mode domination on the six-(or seven) string will still pick up a copy. Not only did this work well for Winger, but it was pretty much the formula of the Hagar-era Van Halen, too.Mr. Big followed this formula after ex-Talas bassist Billy Sheehan finished his duties with David Lee Roth. Sheehan then called the Eddie Van Halen of the bass, hooked up with Paul Gilbert, who started touring with bands when he was only 15, then went to GIT in California. His band Racer X put out a couple of albums on Shrapnel records with a very high “whoa” factor, and he appeared in about every third page of Guitar Player magazine for most of the mid-eighties. Their four-piece was rounded out by Pat Torpey on drums and a singer which achieved some success as solo artist, but mostly in Japan: vocalist Eric Martin.Produced with a pristine sound, the eleven-track self-titled debut from Mr. Big delivers a terrific mix of proficiency and playability that demonstrates that you don’t need to blast through with super-fast drum beats and constant soloing to make songs work. That said, there are some faster numbers here. The opening song “Addicted to That Rush” starts with Sheehan’s bass burbling at high speed like a nest of bumblebees before Gilbert jumps in and they duel lines a bit until the drums crash in and the song starts. The two work well in their ability to play together; there are parts where they are so synchronized, it sounds like one huge chord reaching from low registers to high, instead of two people playing their own lines. Overall, each of the songs has its own groove, and they alternate between taking things easy (“Big Love”) and slightly rockier bits (“Rock & Roll”, “Merciless”). There’s one zippier song that’s my favorite on that end, “How Can You Do What You Do”, which almost seems like it was written as the “video” song, and I could see Eric Martin on a stage with no audience, wearing his leather pants and a bandana or two, singing into a large industrial fan. Then there's sweet Martin trademark ballad “Anything for You”, and the a Sheehan-penned piece called “Had Enough”, also a slow tune but not exactly a ballad. It starts with just bass, and then adds in some very casual guitar before building up on the drums and going into the song full-steam. It’s a breakup song, very touching little song. This excellent Japanese remastering and reissue on SHM-CD includes the original bonus track "30 Days in the Hole" (a Steve Marriott cover) plus "Merciless" and "How Can You Do What You Do", two songs that never made it into the final tracklist but deserved it.More 'edgy' than the material to come in next albums, "Mr. Big" still sound fresh today, even more on this SHM-CD remaster.

Bio:

Mr. Big is an American rock group, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1988. The band is a quartet composed of Eric Martin (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass guitar), and Pat Torpey (drums); The band is noted especially for their musicianship, and scored a number of hits.Their songs were often marked by strong vocals and vocal harmonies. Their hits include "To Be with You" (a number one single in 15 countries in 1991) and "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind".Mr. Big have remained active and popular for over two decades, despite internal conflicts and changing music trends. They broke up in 2002, but after requests from fans, they reunited in 2009; their first tour was in Japan, in June 2009.The band released What If..., their first album in 10 years, in January 2011.The band takes its name from the song by Free, which was eventually covered by the band on their 1993 album, Bump Ahead.

Album:

Remastered on SHM-CD and with bonus tracks, now out of print. "Bump Ahead", Mr. Big's third effort, is, in my book, their masterpiece. After the success of the previous album and its world-wide hit To Be With You, it would be easy for Mr. Big to follow a formula. They did it half part, but also giving room for their incredible musicianship and expansice songwriting.Where album number 2 Lean Into It perfected the sound the band started on their first album, "Bump Ahead" adds to it, musically, more progression. The sounds are beefier and fatter, with Billy Sheehan's bass playing taking more of a dominant role - a welcomed thing when we are talking about the greatest rock bassist on the scene. "Bump Ahead" blends like few Melodic Hard Rock albums heavy kick-ass hard rockers with commercial, glossy AOR numbers plenty of melody. It has a lot of awesome, catchy songs, and it also has some of the most super technical, coordinated parts in rock and metal music history. The best example of great musicality, catchy lyrics through clean vocals and an unreachable level of technique and coordination without losing style or sound, is the album opener, "Colorado Bulldog". Catchy, with a prominent bass line and a monster guitar work, this song kick some serious ass. Nearly as impressive is the next, the uptempo, melodic scorcher "Price You Gotta Pay". However are the velvety AOR cuts like "Promise Her The Moon" (one of the greatest ballads ever), the perfect melody of "Nothing But Love", the pearl "Ain't Seen Love Like That" and the cover "Wild World" that'll, after repeated plays, have you humming. Then there's the songs where Mr. Big explore new territories on this album mixing the best of both worlds; the attitude-laced "What's It Gonna Be", the 'progressive' "Mr. Gone" (fantastic melody) or the groovy 'Temperamental'.Oh and there's the hidden diamond on this CD, the cover of Free's "Mr Big", the song which gives the band's name. I love this track, the way it is arranged and performed, that bass groove and guitar riff shuffle... killer. It's nice when a band isn't afraid to move forward. It's nice, too, when that forward motion leaves the fans pleased. And this is what "Bump Ahead" resumes.I said in the previous Lean Into It review 'it's a classic, an almost perfect melodic hard rock album... ", well, "Bump Ahead" completes the circle, it is a perfect melodic hard rock album. This Japanese remaster is pure gold delivering a full bright sound, plus three bonus tracks. Btw, did I mentioned that Mr. Big albums have some of the best cover artworks ever?

Album:

Many asked to complete the MR. BIG four first albums Japanese campaign from some years ago, Remastered on SHM-CD and with bonus tracks, now out of print. "Hey Man" was Mr. Big's fourth album, considered by some the 'black sheep' in their discography, but it's a really good record in its own right.Released in 1996, perhaps the title of one song included here, "Where Do I Fit In?" paint Mr. Big's place in the US American rock at the moment. With the grunge dominating the charts, Mr. Big were in a situation to impose their brand of melodic hard rock melodies into an audience flooded with plain, uninspired sad songs. For "Hey Man", Mr. Big turned darker, with songs based in rocking chord progressions than their original technical stuff, but still with the melody as center role filled with excellent vocals and lyrics. There's more acoustics into the mix, and not exactly in a ballad mode. It's a more 'classic rock' record if you want. Bluesy, rootsy guitars, rockers but also alot of slow tunes. This benefited Eric Martin vocals presence, which are the star on "Hey Man".Songs like the soulful 'If That's What It Takes', the melodic gem 'Goin' Where The Wind Blows' or the atmospheric 'The Chain' are mixed with dynamic rockers like 'Jane Doe', the almost funky 'Where Do I Fit In?', the dark 'Out Of The Underground', the classic rocker 'Mama D.' and of course, the ultra-catchy 'Take Cover'."Hey Man' obviously reflects a band in transition, which ended with guitarist Paul Gilbert out, replaced by Richie Kotzen. Still is a great, solid record which brought new listeners to the Mr. Big camp, those eager for more mature, earthy compositions, playing and sound. This Japanese remaster by Isao Kikuchi seems to have rescued some layers of guitar harmonics, turning the listening experience even more enjoyable, plus 4 bonus tracks (check 'I Love You Japan', a must for Paul Gilbert fans).

Album:

Get Over It is the fifth studio album by the hard rock band Mr. Big. It is their first studio album to feature guitarist Richie Kotzen.Mr. Big broke up in 1996, and reformed in 1999 without Paul Gilbert. It wasn’t personal; he just wasn’t available. He was working with a revamped Racer X, and his solo albums were popular in Japan. In a stroke of genius, Mr. Big tapped a contemporary of Gilbert from his Shrapnel records days — Richie Kotzen. Kotzen, like Mr. Big, was popular, could shred, and could write commercial music. Kotzen has a distinct soul/blues vibe that he introduced to Mr. Big along with his own vocals. The resultant Mr. Big album, Get Over It, was an amalgam of the two artists. Different, but still a good fit. Leadoff track “Electrified” is almost like a new band, based on the quality of the old. Kotzen, like Gilbert, can shred – check out “Hiding Place”. He just does it with more blues. He also sings co-lead vocals on “Static”, the only Kotzen solo writing credit. With him and Eric Martin in the same band, you get two of the most soulful hard rockers on Earth in one place at one time! The song that, in past days, would have been the “bit hit” is a track called “Superfantastic”. This campfire rock track recalls the good old days, but the bluesy stuff is more interesting. Kotzen pours on the slide for “A Rose Alone”, which sounds like an old Shaw/Blades tune. “Try to Do Without It” is a delightful confection of soul and bluesy guitar.Get Over It lacks in one way. Mr. Big albums are usually peppered with many unforgettable standout tracks throughout. Get Over It only has a handful of those, stacked near the beginning. It’s an enjoyable listen throughout, with no dull or skipable moments, but it’s missing those high points. The songs you remember for days after. Instead, Get Over It plays like cool bluesy (and sometimes funky) background CD.

Line Up:

Eric Martin – vocals
Richie Kotzen – guitar, lead vocals on "Static"
Billy Sheehan – bass guitar
Pat Torpey – drums

Mixing – Pat Regan
Engineer – Pat Regan

Album:

Actual Size is the sixth album by the American rock band Mr. Big, originally released in August 2001. It was their second and final studio album to feature guitarist Richie Kotzen. Actual Size would be Mr. Big's final studio album for 10 years, until What If... in 2011. The song "Shine" would later be used as the closing theme to the anime adaptation of Hellsing. Actual Size released in 2001 was the sixth Mr Big album and the second to feature Richie Kotzen on guitar. Produced by Richie Zito, the mix is really clear and the album sounds really robust. Their previous album Get Over It was a very soulful and acoustic affair so it was great to hear them get a little more grunt back into their music this time around whilst still venturing along the soul infused pop path. Highlights include the rocking opening track "Lost In America" which unleashes some Kotzen shred in the solo, the vocal harmonies and catchy chorus of "Shine", the grooving riffs and awesome solo of "Suffocation", the melodic ballad "I Don't Want To Be Happy", and the excellent soulful ballad "Nothing Like It In The World" which closes the album out in style . The Japanese reissue includes the bonus track "Deep Dark Secret" which is a nice addition to a good album. Despite the fact that this was to be Mr Big's last album with Kotzen and their last for nearly a decade, Actual Size was a good album that still holds up well after all these years but, for these ears, doesn't really rise to the level of the Paul Gilbert fronted lineup - 3.5 stars.

Eric Martin vocals
Billy Sheehan bass
Pat Torpey drums

10. Cheap Little Thrill
11. How Did I Give Myself Away
12. Nothing Like It in the World
13. Deep Dark Secret (Japan Bonus Track)

Album:

We have already seen a number of hard rock legends like Krokus, Deep Purple etc. in the last few months releasing brand new material, and its already time for another such release. On the 7th of July, the supergroup Mr. Big will be releasing their ninth album titled ‘Defying Gravity’ on Fronters Music SRL. This album features the four original members – Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitars), Billy Sheehan (bass) and Pat Torpey (drums). They even brought back producer Kevin Elson, who has worked on albums like ‘Bump Ahead’ and ‘Lean Into It’, on board for this album. Also, Matt Starr has managed the drum duties on many songs on this album due to Torpey’s recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.Coming to the sound, this record comprises the trademark Mr. Big sound that is a combination of technical mastery, speed and melody. Guitarist Paul Gilbert has mentioned in various interviews that it took the band just six days to finish recording the album and they played live in the studio! The first track is a power packed one titled “Open Your Eyes” and sets the energy levels high, with its catchy riff and a face melting guitar solo towards the middle. Up next is the title track and begins with a very melodious guitar work and Eric Martin’s voice still sounding fresh as ever. The alternating riffs and interludes sound very pleasing to the ears. “Everybody Needs A Little Trouble” has groovy riffs with the bass and drums doing wonders along with the vocals which are handled very well. This one also has a classic Gilbert style shredded solo. The fourth track,”Damn I’m In Love Again”, takes on a very different feel with the acoustic and harmony laden country style. Melodic soft rock lovers will surely dig this one. The band returns to the heavier sound in the next song and the guitars go all progressive on this one, with Billy totally keeping up with the bass like a wizard. The next three songs reminded me of the 80s pop/rock ballads dealing with the themes of love, parting etc. and really charged up the old school ballad enthusiast in me. “Nothing Bad (Bout Feeling Good)” has quite a nice melody with a good chorus. The next track tells the story of an ordinary man dealing with the various aspects of love in the modern world. The technical prowess of the band, particularly of Gilbert, takes a high note here as well with the muted guitar playing. “She’s All Coming Back To Me Now” talks about being unable to fall out of love at all. Eric Martin’s voice adds a brilliant flavor to all of these three tracks.“1992” has been already released for streaming across various platforms and takes on a nostalgic feel and is about the bands peak years when they released the international number one hit “To Be With You” in 1992. The song has been received very well. The album ends with two more tracks “Nothing At All” and “Be Kind” which once again proves the collective excellence of the band members with “Be Kind” being a very melodic and groovy ballad that is bound to get stuck in the heads of the listeners. It is absolutely unbelievable that these guys still have their flair and can produce a record so good in a span of 6 days. And as shown on the album cover, this album is indeed a mammoth falling into the current music scenario of the world. The album will most likely be well received upon release and as I have said before, ballad lovers will surely dig this one.

Bio:

Album:

Following the release of their 2017 album, “Defying Gravity”, MR. BIG set out on a trek that took them all over the world to promote the new release in a live setting. Anyone who has ever had the distinct pleasure of seeing the band live knows that the virtuoso musicianship and incredible vocals are on full display in this setting. By this time, drummer Pat Torpey’s battle with Parkinson’s Disease had been made public, but Pat toured with the band regardless and sat behind the drum kit for select songs, while also providing background vocals, tambourine, etc. on other tracks when Matt Starr was taking his turn on the kit. Captured at a stop in Milan, IT, “LIVE FROM MILAN” has a tracklisting that will surely satisfy long-time and newer fans of the band, and of course contains bass and guitar solos from the always entertaining and awe inspiring Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert, respectively.Sadly, this would be one of Pat Torpey’s last performances with the band as he passed away from complications due to Parkinson’s in early 2018.The set captures a special moment in time for the band and also serves as a “greatest hits” of sorts as they hit on all their classic songs from the early albums as well as revered material from newer releases.MR. BIG, formed in 1988, have produced numerous hit songs that ranged across a wide array of rock genres – be it ballads, heavy metal, or blues rock. Their hits include, but are not limited to, “Alive and Kicking,” "Just Take My Heart" and the chart-topping ballad, "To Be With You" (Billboard Hot 100 #1 single in 15 countries for multiple weeks in 1991).

Album:

First released in 1991, Lean into It, is the second studio album by the American rock supergroup, consisting of Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey, Mr. Big. This is the band's breakthrough album - Lean into It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 charts, while the single 'To Be with You' became the band's first and only song to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up single, 'Just Take My Heart', was a Top-20 hit, peaking at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.The million-selling album also contains the popular tracks 'Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy','Alive and Kickin' and 'Green Tinted Sixties Man'. Lean Into It shows that Mr. Big could also strip away all the flash and 7-minute solos and simply create well-written songs with rhythm, groove and good melodies, making the band one of the iconic new wave of progressive 'musician's bands' who could play mind-blowing complicated riffs on their instruments at lightning speeds. This is one of the ever-green albums of 80's style hair band rock that transcends the years and 2021 is the 30th anniversary of the release. evoXS is remastering the album using hi-resolution digital transfers from the original analogue master tapes and will be manufactured as a MQA-CD, hybrid SACD, 180g Vinyl LP and Hi-Res digital. MQA is an award-winning technology that delivers the sound of the studio. MQA-CD plays on all CD players. When a conventional CD player is connected to an MQA-enabled device, the CD will reveal the original master quality. The MQA-CD version includes 2 discs - disc 1 contains the remastered tracks from the original album and disc 2 contains unreleased and hard to find bonus tracks, along with minus bass and minus guitar tracks, especially made for musicians to jam with.
