Bio:

Kane Roberts (born Robert William Athas; January 16, 1962) is an American heavy metal guitarist best known for his tenure in Alice Cooper's band during the late 1980s. He has performed as a solo act.Roberts is notable for his Rambo-like appearance and physique and his usage of an electric guitar shaped like a machine gun.Roberts was the guitarist who played on Alice Cooper's Constrictor and Raise Your Fist and Yell and their respective tours. He is the man responsible for Alice's metal years in the late '80s as he co-wrote nearly every track from those albums. Just by being on stage, he was a part of the show with his huge physique and rocket shooting guitars. After "Raise Your Fist", Roberts released his first solo album, Kane Roberts, which featured Cooper's lyrics on Full Pull. He then guested on Trash, playing guitar on Bed of Nails. He then released a second solo album, Saints and Sinners, which contained the Bon Jovi-penned Does Anybody Really Fall in Love Anymore?, previously recorded by Cher as well. While he is primarily a guitar player, Roberts is also a skilled vocalist, capable of extreme high range, as is evident on his solo projects. He has contributed backing vocals on several albums, including Steve Vai's Sex & Religion, Desmond Child's Discipline, and the song Shocker by the Dudes of Wrath, which served as the title track from the 1989 film of the same name.He also played on the Bob Ezrin produced Count Three & Pray album by Berlin, and the 1986 Rod Stewart album Every Beat of My Heart. He also co-wrote Take It Off with Paul Stanley and Bob Ezrin, which appeared on Kiss' Revenge album.Roberts took a long hiatus from music after his second solo album, but returned in 1999 with a band called Phoenix Down, named for a life potion in the PlayStation video game Final Fantasy VII, one of Roberts' favorite games. Phoenix Down recorded only one album, entitled Under A Wild Sky. Fans of both say that much of the record is inspired by the game. After several years away from the music industry, working in graphic arts and as a video game programmer, Roberts began work on a new album, Touched, in 2006.On October 23, 2011, Roberts performed with Talon at Firefest VIII, marking his first live performance in over twenty years. In 2012, Roberts released Unsung Radio, a collection of previously unreleased tracks.

Album:

Saints and Sinners is the second studio album by Kane Roberts. It was produced by Desmond Child, who also has co-writing credits on all tracks."Twisted" was the first single and video released. The video had model and actress Tania Coleridge. The second single "Does Anybody Really Fall in Love Anymore?" became hit on radio and MTV peaking at #38 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It was written by Child, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Diane Warren, and was previously recorded by Cher for her 1989 album Heart of Stone. When KANE ROBERSTS, the muscle-bound guitarist best known for slinging the axe for Alice Cooper (on the legendary Constrictor and Raise Your Fist and Yell albums) released this solo effort "Saints And Sinners" back in ‘91, he created one of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock albums the genre has ever seen, and sadly, few listened.Even to this day, "Saints And Sinners" has rarely been rivaled and remains a near-flawless example of how to craft a hook-drenched ear candy. Now years later, this classic album sounds just as good as it did back then. Actually, it sounds better. Because reissue specialists YesterRock Records have gotten their mitts on it, given it a spiffy remastering, and released it back onto the market in a limited edition version (only 500 copies) that includes 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks on an extra disc."Saints & Sinners" is an over the top commercial Melodic Hard Rock album plenty of catchiness and hooks. Someone told Roberts and company that bigger is better and they decided that if bigger is better, than massive and huge were the only way to go, and go that way they did.The hooks are not merely big, they are humongous, and they are legion. The choruses are monstrous sing-along anthems that soar so high they bump their heads on Heaven’s basement and every one of them is slathered in wall-of-sound harmony vocals that provide the knockout punch, the coup de grace.Take all that and toss in the terrific guitar playing of Roberts and you have the sort of stuff melodic hard rock wet dreams are made of.The album opens with "Wild Nights" and with its call to arms chorus and amazing melodies you just know this album will not let you down. This is quickly followed by the killer "Twisted" and then by the Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Diane Warren and Desmond Child written track "Does Anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore?" which has also been recorded by Cher and demoed by Bon Jovi for possible inclusion on the 'New Jersey' album. This song still sends shivers down my spine to this day.The rest of the tracks maintain the high quality, as the masterclass in MR/AOR which is "Rebel Heart", the rowdy "You Always Want It", the kick ass "Fighter" (title says all) or the melodic bliss in the mid-tempo "It's Only Over For You".Now onto the main selling point of this reissue for me, which are the bonus tracks on the extra CD.First up is "House Burning Down" and this is a mid paced melodic rocker with great vibe. It doesn't hold a candle to the main album tracks, but the chorus has a good hook plenty of big '80-style backing vocals and Roberts absolutely rips it up on the solo.Second bonus track is the rocker with a poppy feel "Waiting For You", which while being cool has some differences in sound and a demo smell."Dirty Blonde" on the other hand happens to be the best of the bonuses, a vintage commercial rockin' tune with catchy hooks and a sing-along chorus spiced up with smooth harmonies and gang backups.Last bonus "White Trash" is a cool rocker with some eighties Alice Cooper hints and a kind of Van Halen's 'Finish What Ya Started' swagger to it and a fine chorus.Given how great "Saints & Sinners" sounded back then, the remastering doesn’t significantly improve the quality. But even a diamond benefits from a little polish once in a while, and on this new version the sound gain is better and more dynamic than the '91 CD. And now you have the previously unreleased tracks. The solid songwriting talent combined with Roberts’ stellar guitar skills and the impeccable production from Sir Arthur Payson created something magical in this album, as said, a true Melodic Hard rock gem.If you have ignored this masterpiece in the genre for all these years, then this is an absolutely essential purchase. For those who already own and love this album this is like an upgrade and therefore the one to own.

Album:

On the occasion of his performance at the Firefest Festival, ex- Alice Cooper guitarist KANE ROBERTS in conjunction with the Firefest Records put out a special 2-CD set entitled "Unsung Radio - 2CD Set".The package includes most the material from Kane Roberts' 3rd solo release under the moniker 'Phoenix Down', along with a full CD of 11 unreleased songs that scan his pre-Alice Cooper recordings to some recorded few years ago (several Jim Peterik co-writes) and additional audio commentary.Phoenix Down's 'Under A Wild Sky' was originally published independently and become quite hard to find. It's a strong, classy Melodic Hard Rock album where Roberts explores some more modern sounds than on his previous efforts, still faithful to the traditional stylings of the genre. Now has been remastered and sounds much better. The 2nd CD features new songs and very early tracks recorded during the '80s, some delivered with a really rough sound never heard from him, some with a true AOR sound.Interspersed between, it's really interesting to hear Roberts' commentaries about these previously unreleased tracks about what was happening during the recording sessions.Released during Kane Roberts show at Firefest, "Unsung Radio 2CD Firefest version" was a strictly Limited Edition of 500 copies only, of course, sold out now. There's another version of the album released via Roberts' own label. This is for sure a much sought after Melodic Hard Rock collector's item – and is a damn good double album as well!

Album:

We have already featured here KANE ROBERTS last album "Unsung Radio" in its FireFest double-CD limited edition pack, but Roberts released the album as well via his own label Unsung Records.
This version is quite different, including 3 new tracks and a jewel case housing detailed artwork. These songs are all material recorded by Kane Roberts during the '80s after and before playing in the Alice Cooper Band, some '90s tapes and some new material.A little cat named Jim 'Jimbo' Peterik - Survivor & Pride Of Lions main man - was completely involved into these recordings co-writing, playing, producing and mixing.Other renowned melodic hard rock man engineering & mixing is no other than talented Michael Wagener. The exclusive tracks on this "Unsung Radio - Unsung Records version" are 'House Burning Down', 'Dirty Blonde' and 'White Trash', all mid-80s recorded tunes and among my favorites.Despite part of the material here are pre-production songs, the sound quality is very good with that classy '80s melodic hard rock feel. You can't go wrong with the session musicians accompanying Robert such as Kip Winger, Mike Slammer (Seventh Key), Bill Syniar (Survivor, Mecca) and many more, with Peterik adding his magic in keyboards, arrangements and overall production.Unfortunately "Unsung Radio - Unsung Records version" was a quite limited edition CD as well, now out of print and a collector's item.

Album:

Former Alice Cooper guitarist KANE ROBERTS will release his new solo album, "The New Normal", on January 25, 2019 via Frontiers Music, tomorrow getting this advanced edition in Japan with a bonus track.Of the iconic images of ‘80s rock ’n roll, one that has certainly stood the test of time is Alice Cooper’s then “Rambo-looking” guitar player shooting fire from his M-80 shaped guitar. That guitar player is none other than Kane Roberts, an accomplished musician and singer who, after leaving Cooper’s band, went on to record a total of four solo albums, including the excellent 'Saints And Sinners'.Kane’s name and musical abilities first came to prominence on Alice Cooper’s “Constrictor” and “Raise Your Fist And Yell” albums. As a solo recording artist, he landed some Top 40 hits and his varied musical background includes recording, writing and touring with artists such as Rod Stewart, Desmond Child, KISS, Diane Warren, Alice in Chains, Guns N’ Roses, and more. He’s also written or recorded music for films like Light Sleeper, Penelope Spheeris’ Decline of Western Civilization, Friday the 13th IV: Jason Lives, John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, and more.In 1991, his second solo album for Geffen Records, “Saints and Sinners”, was released and included the Top 40 Billboard hit “Does Anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore?”, originally written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. And of course, includes other superb songs like “Twisted”, which will forever be one of my favourite melodic hard rock songs."The New Normal" is Robert's first album in seven years, and anyone looking for “Saints And Sinners II” can look elsewhere, because this new CD is not the old world at all.Instead, it’s a very modern sounding rock record. Even further, actually, it's one that is more than happy to break the rules.Starting with an arena rocker that the likes of Halestorm would be more than proud of, “King Of The World” with its hookline: “this is my coronation, thank you for the degradation”, is typical in that it hasn’t got the structure you might imagine, the lyrics are more raw than you remember and the whole thing belongs in 2019 – and it’s the best thing here too.It does need saying, though, that Roberts has always been a brilliant guitar player and that hasn’t left him, but while the solos soar, the likes of “Wonderful” have a dark heart.Roberts was first seen as Alice Cooper’s guitarist on Raise Your Fist And Yell, and Alice appears as guest on “Beginning Of The End” to prove that he is basically a God amongst men, but this also features Alissa White-Gluz and Babymetal drummer Aoyama Hideki and has a totally different dynamic as result than your typical 80s stuff.“Who We Are” is a ballad, but one that has more interesting things going on than many, while the gorgeous guitar and electro drum pulse of “Forever Out Of Place” is married with a chorus that basically takes Shinedown’s playbook as its own.“Leave This World Behind” is built around a fine keyboard riff and a real throb, before opening out into a real proper metal thing, while Lzzy Hale co-writing “The Lions Share” might well give a clue to what that one sounds like – and in some other world 10,000 mobile phone bulbs light the sky where this is played. Many of these – in truth – sound like the handbrake needs to be released. “Leave Me In The Dark” is a good example, given that it does the quiet verse, loud chorus thing that many here do, while Kane also managed to reunite his former Alice Cooper bandmates Kip Winger, Paul Taylor and Ken Mary on “Above and Beyond” and credit to them for a polished, modern shining piece of work. The album closer, “Wrong” lurks and sort creeps in the shadows with melodious mid-paced modern feel, and – like the opener – it has a raw side too. “You’re such worthless scum” spits Roberts at one point, and the rest could do with such vitriol. The Japanese bonus track is a remix of that song, "Wrong (Remix)", which sounds pretty different, more uptempo as well.“The New Normal” is a record that needs some listens to fully appreciate, artistically, you imagine, it gave everyone here a thrill. Probably more so than blokes like me writing on about an album that belongs to the last millennium. While it isn't the feel-good, melodic hard rock of early Kane Roberts, truth is "The New Normal” results very interesting and compelling, modern, dark, and updated to times.

Line-Up:

Kane Roberts – vocals, lead and rhythm guitar (Ex-Alice Cooper)
Guitars – Kane Roberts, Evan Magness, Nita Strauss
Bass - Kip Winger, Ed “Special Ed” Modigliani, Johnny 5, Betty Has Eyes
