Bio:

Kiss was formed in New York in '72 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen) and Gene Simmons (Gene Klein). The line-up was rounded out by drummer Peter Criss (Crisscoula), located through a Rolling Stone ad, and lead guitarist Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), who answered an ad in the Village Voice. The band's cartoon image, kabuki makeup and 4th-of-July stageshow concept was in place from the start, and they began promoting their own hall shows in NYC. TV director Bill Aucoin saw them, became their manager, and secured a deal for them with Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records within two weeks. Three LPs were released in a year's time, but the live fourth LP, Alive! (1975) contained their first huge hit, "Rock And Roll All Nite." Until the early '80, Kiss was unstoppable, with two huge-selling Marvel Comics, a network TV movie and four simultaneously-released solo albums under their studded belts. In '80, Criss left for a solo career and since then, the drum and lead positions have been ever-changing. In '83, the band stripped away the makeup and celebrated renewed interest."You wanted the best, you got it! The hottest band in the land: KISS!" So went the rally cry at the beginning of a Kiss concert, an event of exploding pyrotechnics, vomited blood and louder-than-God hard rock. Their fan club--The Kiss Army--swelled to six-figures strong during the band's '70s heyday, and between 1974 and today they've sold in excess of 70 million albums. In '96, the original band reformed (made up?), and took their full costume-makeup-pyro 1976 show on the road--for a year-long stint--resulting in one of the most successful rock tours ever. Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Album:

Limited double 180gm vinyl LP repressing of this 2006 album, released to coincide with the band's 40th Anniversary. Remastered to high definition 192kHz/24-bit audio for maximum fidelity, this album has never sounded so amazing and now vinyl collectors will get what they've been demanding. All posters, sleeve art, stickers, etc that appeared in the original LP release have been faithfully reproduced for the Kiss Army.

Album:

Revenge is the 16th studio album by American rock band Kiss, released on May 19, 1992. It was the band's first album after the death of longtime drummer Eric Carr in November 1991. Carr was replaced by Eric Singer. It was Kiss's first album since 1979's Dynasty to reach the Top 10 in the United States. The album was a worldwide success, reaching the Top 20 in seven other countries. It was certified gold by the RIAA on July 20, 1992.The album marks a return to a more Heavier sound as opposed the Glam Metal sound on their 2 previous records. The album was dedicated to Carr, and the last track, "Carr Jam 1981," was a demo he had recorded soon after joining the group. One modification to the song was the dubbing of Bruce Kulick's guitar over Ace Frehley's, which originally appeared. The main riff of the song was used as the basis for the Frehley's Comet song "Breakout", from the 1987 album Frehley's Comet. "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II" and "Unholy" have remained regular Kiss live staples. "Domino" was performed during the Revenge Tour and Kiss My Ass Tour. "I Just Wanna" and "Take It Off" were only performed during the Revenge Tour, while "Every Time I Look at You" and "Spit" were, along with "Domino", performed during the MTV Unplugged show.Well, this remaster sounds million bucks. It's much, much rich on the low frequencies, the mid-spectrum is clearer and it possesses a great dynamic range. Also, it's being sold at a very affordable price."Revenge" is one of my favorite KISS albums. The Bob Ezrin-produced record pulled the band out of the second creative slump of their career. In addition, Simmons & Co. also hired marketing consultants to find out what fans wanted from the group. The result was probably the most mature album KISS ever did musically. Great guitar work, pounding drums, very good vocal arrangements and solid songs / choruses.Edgy, sharp and catchy, "Revenge" is the most pure Hard Rock album from KISS' career.Highly Recommended in your collection.

Album:

KISS "Hot In The Shade" released in Japan on high quality SHM-CD should be the most requested album on this blog ever. That's because "Hot In The Shade" is perhaps the worst - technically speaking - sounding album of their entire career, and fans are looking for an improvement.1988 was probably the worst year in KISS’ history. Their popularity was pretty much over - Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses where the stars in the US hard rock at the moment - at least in what concerned stadium-packing tours. The band’s long-standing management team was fired, and Stanley’s psychiatrist (!) was promoted to the position of financial consultant. A tour opening for Iron Maiden was accepted to keep the band in the spotlight, but the band was not able to deliver new songs for a new album. An interim package was released in the form of Greatest Hits compilation Smashes, Trashes and Hits; when a band release a GH album, this is a sign of lack of inspiration.Next year, their label pushed for a new record, seeing other bands in the genre reaching stardom. Yes, it was 1989, one of the greatest years for the melodic hard rock scene in the US.So Kiss came up new material, which indeed were pre-production demos... really polished and compared with many other band's records, even better, but not a 'major' production. These resulted in "Hot In The Shade", the largest amount of material of any Kiss studio record with 15 tracks and an almost 1 hour running time.Despite its pretty low quality production for Kiss' standards, "Hot In The Shade" features really good songs. Perhaps if trimmed to 10-11 tracks might work better... songs like 'Hide Your Heart', 'Silver Spoon', or 'Somewhere Between (Heaven And Hell)' are pretty good rockers. The album is famous for its popular ballad 'Forever' which was co-written with Michael Bolton and served as the band's first Top 10 single in over a decade."Hot In The Shade" also marked drummer Eric Carr's last full participation before his death in 1991, and it includes his only lead vocal on the quite good 'Little Caesar'.So "Hot In The Shade", unlike the rest of Kiss' discography, never was 'officially' remastered. I think the band / label never wanted to mess with an album poorly produced and turn things even worse.A 'mastered for iTunes' version appeared last year (but it really sucks) alongside a supposed remaster exclusive for the vinyl reissue. Although I never heard it, reports of fans / buyers are not the best.Regarding this Japanese release on SHM-CD, Universal Japan announced a proper own remaster of "Hot In The Shade" as part of a four-CD Kiss reissue series three years ago.Again, fans assure this SHM-CD is not remastered - booklet says nothing about it - but to my ears this "Hot In The Shade" sounds much, much better than the original. Something has been done...I don't know if Universal Japan did a remastering here, but you won't find a better sounding "Hot In The Shade" out there. The bass is prominent, the vocals clearer and the overall punch increased.

Line Up:

Paul Stanley vocals, rhythm guitar
Gene Simmons vocals, bass guitar
Eric Carr drums, vocals
Bruce Kulick lead guitar, vocals

Tommy Thayer acoustic and electric guitar on "Betrayed" and "The Street Giveth And The Street Taketh Away"
Phil Ashley keyboards on "Hide Your Heart" and "Forever"
Pat Regan bass on "Cadillac Dreams"
Charlotte Crossley backing vocals
Valerie Pinkston backing vocals
Kim Edwards-Brown backing vocals
Kevin Valentine drums on "You Love Me To Hate You"

Album:

Sonic Boom is the 19th studio album and the first in 11 years from the rock band Kiss, released on October 6, 2009.The album was recorded at Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA and produced by Paul Stanley and co-produced by Greg Collins. The album was the first studio album to be released under the current line-up consisting of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer. Stanley stated, "the purpose of this album isn't to let people know that we're still around – it's to let people know we can still knock out anybody who's out there!".A fan-routed North American tour promoted the album along with international shows throughout 2010, which included the band headlining the Rock am Ring festival in Germany. The cover artwork was created by artist Michael Doret who had worked with Kiss previously to create the cover of their 1976 album Rock and Roll Over.Wal-Mart is the exclusive distributor of the album in the US and Canada, selling it as a three disc package including the album, Kiss Klassics (a completely re-recorded greatest hits album that until now had been exclusively released in Japan as Jigoku-Retsuden), and a six-song live DVD recorded April 5, 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of the South American leg of the Kiss Alive/35 World Tour. The album was sold as a digipak including a 20-page booklet. Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Album:

Hotter Than Hell is the second studio album by American rock band Kiss, released on October 22, 1974 by Casablanca Records. It was certified gold on June 23, 1977, having shipped 500,000 copies. The album was re-released in 1997 in a remastered version. It peaked on the Billboard 200 charts at No. 100, without the benefit of a hit single. Many of the album's songs are live staples for the band, including "Got to Choose", "Parasite", "Hotter Than Hell", "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll" and "Watchin' You".The production team of Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise, who had produced the group's first album, was chosen for the follow-up. Since the pair had relocated to Los Angeles, Kiss moved there to work with them. The band, all hailing from New York, immediately developed a dislike for their new surroundings. Paul Stanley's guitar was stolen on his first day in Los Angeles. The working title for the album was The Harder They Come.Although the album featured three songs penned by lead guitarist Ace Frehley, he did not sing lead vocals on any of them; his lack of confidence in his singing abilities at the time led to lead vocal duties for "Parasite" and "Strange Ways" going to Gene Simmons and Peter Criss, respectively. Frehley's guitar solo on "Strange Ways" has been referred to as one of his best. The album is well known for its striking cover. The front featured Japanese manga-influenced artwork, and the back cover showed individual band shots taken by Norman Seeff at a wild party, and a composite of all four band members' makeup designs. The Japanese character on the bottom of the album cover (力) is chikara, which means "power". It would later be used on various forms of Kiss material during the 1970s and 1980s, most prominently on Eric Carr's drum kit. The Japanese characters on the top-right corner of the album cover (地獄 の さけび) are jigoku no sakebi, which means "hell's shout" or "the shout of hell". The Japanese characters used for Frehley's name are mispronounced. The characters are エイス フューリ (eisu fyuuri), which would translate to "Ace Fury".

Album:

Dressed to Kill is the third studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on March 19, 1975. It was produced by Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart, as the label's financial situation at the time did not permit the hiring of a professional producer.Dressed to Kill was re-released in 1997 in a remastered version.Possibly due to the short length of the album, original vinyl versions had long pauses between each track to create the illusion that the sides were longer than they were. Each side ran just 15 minutes, and some of the song times were listed incorrectly on the vinyl versions. For example, "Two Timer" was listed at 2:59 and "Ladies in Waiting" was listed at 2:47.While the album cover depicts Kiss in business suits, the only member of the band who actually owned one was Peter Criss. The suits worn on the cover by the rest of the band were owned by manager Bill Aucoin. The original vinyl release of the album also had the Kiss logo embossed around the picture. The photograph of the band on the album cover was taken on the southwest corner of 23rd Street and 8th Avenue looking north in New York City.Dressed to Kill peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the US and was certified gold by the RIAA on February 28, 1977."C'mon and Love Me" and "Rock and Roll All Nite" were released as singles but failed to rise up the charts. A live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite" from Alive!, issued as a single later that year, reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.Hi-Fi for Pleasure said of the album: Hopefully the coming and going trendiness of Kiss won't leave them high and dry. We're so desperately short of showman crutch [sic] rock that albums like these feel like fresh air and just as rare. But the signs are there that they've been pronounced a bit too proficient to be really heavy."Rock and Roll All Nite" is one of Kiss' most well-known songs – and has remained a staple in the band's concerts since 1975 – along with "Rock Bottom", "C'mon and Love Me" and "She".

Line Up:

Paul Stanley - vocals, rhythm guitar (intro guitar solo on "C'mon and Love Me")
Ace Frehley - lead guitar (all guitars and bass on "Getaway", backing vocals on "Getaway" and "Rock Bottom")
Gene Simmons - vocals, bass guitar, (rhythm guitar on "Ladies in Waiting")
Peter Criss - drums, percussion, vocals

Production:

Neil Bogart - producer
Dave Wittman - engineer
George Lopez - assistant engineer
George Marino - CD mastering
Joseph Palamacco - remastering
Bob Gruen - photography

Tracklist:

01. Room Service
02. Two Timer

Album:

Rock and Roll Over is the fifth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released in 1976. It was recorded at the Star Theatre, and in order to get the proper drum sound, Peter Criss recorded the drum tracks in a bathroom, communicating via video-link with the rest of the band. Criss' vocals are featured on the tracks "Baby Driver" and "Hard Luck Woman". Paul Stanley, who originally wanted the latter song to be sung by Rod Stewart, gave it to Criss, after Gene Simmons insisted Criss sing the song instead.Although "Hard Luck Woman" did not equal the success of "Beth", it did become another top 20 single for Kiss. "Calling Dr. Love" became a concert staple, being played on just about every tour since the album's release. The cover artwork was created by artist Michael Doret, who worked with Kiss again on their 2009 album Sonic Boom.Rock and Roll Over was released by Casablanca Records on November 11, 1976.Included inside the album sleeve were a sticker of the album cover and a glossy photo press release pamphlet.Rock and Roll Over peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200.

Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Album:

Alive II is the second live album (and eighth overall) by American hard rock band Kiss, released on October 14, 1977 by Casablanca Records. The band had released three albums (Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, and Love Gun) since the previous live outing, the seminal 1975 release Alive!, and the band drew upon the variety of new tracks, with Eddie Kramer producing. The origins of Alive II go back to early 1977 when the band's manager Bill Aucoin suggested that Kramer record a live album during the evening show at Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan on April 2, 1977. The plan was to release a live album to give Kiss some much deserved time off before recording the album that would become Love Gun later that autumn. Kramer finished work on the album, but Casablanca and Kiss deemed it unusable, and the band forged ahead with their Love Gun sessions. Most of the live tracks on Alive II were recorded during the band's August 26–28 shows at the Forum while on their Love Gun Tour. The 3 p.m. soundchecks at the August 26 and 27 shows were recorded, and later used on the album (i.e. "I Stole Your Love") with crowd noise being dubbed in later. "Beth" and "I Want You" were lifted from the aborted Japanese live album and used on the finished Alive II. As the band did not want to duplicate songs included on Alive!, the songs chosen for the three live sides of the album were all drawn from Kiss' three preceding studio albums: Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun.On the original double album, the songs on side 4 (tracks 6-10 on the second CD) are studio tracks recorded September 13–16, 1977.Although Ace Frehley was originally credited for lead guitar on the studio tracks, the remastered version released in 1997 confirmed what had been speculated by Kiss fans for years: Bob Kulick actually played lead guitar on three tracks ("All American Man", "Rockin' in the U.S.A." and "Larger Than Life"), not Frehley. Frehley's sole involvement for the studio songs was "Rocket Ride" (originally written for a solo album), on which he sang lead vocals and played both guitar and bass guitar. Paul Stanley played all guitars on "Any Way You Want It", which was originally recorded by the Dave Clark Five in 1964.Several early copies of the album's cover featured a rare misprint of three additional songs ("Take Me", "Hooligan" and "Do You Love Me?") with a slightly altered song order. None of these additional songs appeared on the LP. On the misprint, "Take Me" is after "Detroit Rock City", with "King of the Night Time World" appearing after "Ladies Room" on Side 1. Side two features "Hooligan" after "Shock Me", which is placed after "Hard Luck Woman". On Side 3, "Do You Love Me?" appears after "God of Thunder", with "Beth" sandwiched between "I Want You" and "Shout It Out Loud". "Hooligan" and "Take Me" were performed on the 1977 Love Gun tour, and "Do You Love Me?" was performed on the Japanese tour that same year, making their consideration for inclusion with the second live album possible.Alive II was originally reissued as a double-CD set in what has now become known as a "fatboy" 2CD case. When the Kiss back catalog was remastered, it was housed in a slimline 2CD case and, in keeping with the rest of the reissue program, had the artwork restored. This included the set of tattoos. The booklet "The Evolution of Kiss"' and the picture inner sleeves were incorporated as part of the CD booklet. Alive II was re-released in 2006 as part of Kiss Alive! 1975-2000. It included "Rock and Roll All Nite" (single edit version) as a bonus track. The short running time of Alive II allowed for a single CD edition in the latest release.
